Head Coach Skip SteffeyThe 2009-10 season marked the sixth year for Skip Steffey as head coach of the women’s golf team. He was named the GLVC Coach of the Year in 2008-09.

In 2009-10 he helped a starting fi ve featuring four freshmen to a sixth place fi nish at the GLVC Championship.

During the 2008-09 season two Flyers fi nished in the top 10 at the GLVC Championship. Amy Sachs earned All-GLVC honors while Jamie Siedlaczek missed all-conference accolades by just one stroke, tying for eighth.

Sachs was then selected to compete as an individual in the Super Regional. Siedlaczek, who won Lewis’ fi rst women’s golfer of the month award in Octo-

ber of 2008, took home a special Lewis honor at the end of the school year. She was earned Lewis’ Female Senior Stu-dent-Athlete Award. The annual honor goes to the student-athlete with the best overall grade-point average.

“I hope to continue to create a team atmosphere that is both competitive and family-like,” said Steffey, a member of the National Golf Coaches Association. “I believe Lewis can draw outstanding student athletes and compete for conference and national titles in a short period of time.

“Our goal is to fi eld a highly competitive team of outstanding students who enjoy the competition that Division II golf can present, while still focusing on academics.”

In 1971, Steffey earned a bachelor’s degree in physical edu-cation (English minor) and K-12 teaching accreditation at Texas

Christian University. He was a member of the golf team, dor-mitory council president in 1970 and a graduate assistant golf instructor in 1971.

A resident of Mokena, Steffey and his wife, Karen, who is a 1997 Lewis graduate and played two seasons for the Flyer women’s golf team and was a two-time Academic All-GLVC selection. She is a reading specialist at Liberty Junior High School in Burbank.

The Steffeys are parents of a son, Tres, and a daughter Kim. Tres is a 2004 sport management graduate of Lewis where he played four years on the Flyers’ men’s golf team and twice earned All-American Scholar recognition from the Golf Coach-es Association of America. He is a practicing attorney working in real estate tax reduction. Kim is a 2006 graduate of West-ern Illinois University where she was a Summa Cum Laude graduate in exercise science and kinesiology. She is a co-own-er and instructor/coach at Gym Kinetics Gymnastics located in Mokena, Ill.

2011 Season Preview It was a busy fall season for the Lewis University women’s golf team as the Flyers competed in six events and placed in the top-ten in all six competitions. Seventh year head coach Skip Steffey knows that this team is young but believes the work over the winter will pay off this spring. “While we had three top-fi ve and six top-ten fi nishes as a team, we are not satisfi ed,” Steffey said. “In each of those tournaments we should have placed three to fi ve spots higher with a more consistent performance from our three, four and fi ve players-just one shot per player per round would have moved us up at least two spots in each event. “We are a young team, with four of our fi ve top players being sophomores and juniors, so the level of consistency has not been where we need to be at in a very strong East Region,” Steffey said. “Hopefully the strong conditioning and in-door work we have done in the winter will result in more consistent performances by the sophomores and possibly one of the seniors will step-up and help take us to the NCAA Regionals.” The 2010 Flyers fi nished in sixth place in the 2010 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament and Steffey knows this year’s team can improve on that fi nish but will need to pass some of the GLVC powers to move up. “We expect to move up in the GLVC standings this year and improve on our sixth place fi nish last year,” Steffey added. “Again it will fall on everyone to maximize their potential at the right time for us to break into the top four in our confer-ence, where four teams are ranked in the top 35 in the country. “We must beat Southern Indiana and Northern Kentucky in order to move up into the top four.“

The Flyers will look to senior captain Courtney Kellogg as a team leader this spring. Kellogg was fourth on the team in scoring with an 89.6. “Courtney Kellogg is our team leader and is doing a fi ne job of leading the team,” Steffey said. “She is working hard to make her last semester of col-lege golf a memorable one and is hoping to put some consistent scores on the board this spring to help the team to a high fi nish in conference and a spot in the NCAA Regionals.”Senior Courtney Everett will also be look to for leadership as well as making in impact in the top fi ve for the Flyers. Everett competed in six of 10 events in the fall and averaged an even 90. “Courtney Everett would like to make the spring semester her best so far and help push the team up the board in conference and possibly even into the NCAA Tournament.”Junior Leila Marquet led the Flyers with an 80.9 scoring average in the fall including winning the Lady Triton Invitational in October. Marquet also fi n-ished with four top ten fi nishes. “Leila’s win at UMSL showed the team that we have the horses to compete and hopefully the team will be up to the challenge. “She is close to playing at the level we expected when she came to us from Webber International and has an outstanding chance to help lead us to the NCAA Tournament and qualify on her own if she continues the play she dis-

played in October.” Leading the sophomore class is Nicole Tucker who was second on the team in scoring in the fall with an 81.3 with two top fi ve fi nishes and three top ten fi nishes. “Nicole has just scratched the surface of talent that she has in golf and I expect her to play at a higher level this spring than she has the previous three semesters,” Steffey continued. “She is capable of leading this team in every way, including taking us to the NCAA Regionals. “Leila and Nicole are clearly the ‘on-course’ leaders and will drive to help the other players reach their potential as well.” Rounding out the sophomore class for Lewis are Liz Zimmer, Carly Shapiro and Vanessa Phillips. The three averaged 88.9, 92.7 and 94.3, respectively. “These three sophomores and the two seniors hold the key to our success this spring and we need two or three of these fi ve to step up and play at a consistent level to shoot team scores that will make us competitive within the conference and region.” Steffey said. The new addition to the Flyers is transfer Danielle Coffman from Carthage College. Coffman will redshirt the spring season in preparation for the years to come. “While Danielle is sitting out the semester, she fi gures to be a key member of our team in 2011-12,” Steffey said. “She has played some outstanding rounds before coming to Lewis and we look forward to her performance next year.”

Lewis is one of many schools sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers with 328 years of teaching experience in the Lasallian tradition.

MISSIONLewis University, guided by its Catholic and Lasallianheritage, provides to a diverse student population programs for a liberal and professional education grounded in the interaction of knowledge and fi delity in the search for truth. Lewis promotes the develop-ment of the complete person through the pursuit of wisdom and justice. Fundamental to its Mission is a spirit of association which fosters community in all teaching, learning and service.

HISTORY Founded in 1932 under the direction of the Chicago Archdiocese and Bishop Bernard J. Sheil, Lewis began as the Holy Name Technical School, a school for boys and was established on 170 acres of farmland donated by Mi-chael and Frances Fitzpatrick of Lockport. Aviation technol-ogy became the special emphasis of instruction and the origin of today’s highly regarded Department of Aviation and Transportation Studies. During World War II, hundreds of Navy fl ight instructors were trained at Lewis. In 1952, the school

was renamed the Lewis College of Science and Tech-nology and granted its fi rst baccalaureate degrees. In 1960, the De La Salle Christian Brothers - members of a 328-year-old religious order devoted exclusively to teaching and named after Saint John Baptist de La Salle, their founder and Patron Saint of Educators – assumed direction of the institution. Today, with grow-ing enrollment, outstanding programs, experienced faculty and motivated students, Lewis University is recognized as one of the fi nest, mid-sized, compre-hensive Catholic universities in the country.

When Dan Schumacher was hired as Lewis University’s Director of Athletics in June of 2006, the Chicago native knew the heights that the Flyers Athlet-ics program could reach as a department. With great vision comes great expectations, and Schumacher and the Flyers have most certainly delivered. Since his arrival, Lewis has won fi ve regular-season Great Lakes Valley Conference championships and nine GLVC Tournament championships, while making appearances in 12 NCAA Tournaments, including the men’s soccer team’s run to the ‘Final Four’ in 2009. While the Flyers have made improvements on the fi eld, the fi elds have also been improved during Schumacher’s tenure, as there has been over $500,000 worth of facility upgrades on the Romeoville campus. Schumacher helped speed up the facility upgrade timeline by forming the Varsity Club, an organized,

non-profi t fundraising arm of the Lewis University Athletic Department that supports small-scale capital improvements. Neil Carey Arena, home of both basketball and volleyball teams, has seen the most upgrades as it now features a new fl oor, scoreboards, a video board, island baskets and retractable bleachers which has increased the seating to over 1,000. Both the men’s and women’s swimming teams have directly benefi tted from Schumacher’s efforts, as the Lewis Swimming Pool now has a state-of-the-art scoring system which has allowed the program to increase its home schedule. The locker rooms in Neil Carey Arena have been remodeled and are now equipped with fl at screen tele-visions. Lewis now has the ability to video stream all of their home basketball games and volleyball matches from the Arena on www.LewisFlyers.com. Schumacher has also helped make the John F. Ken-nedy Sports Center become more ‘Flyer Friendly’, as the hallways proudly display Lewis Athletics Artwork and each offi ce has furniture that has the Lewis Flyers Athletics logo emblazoned on it. The Athletic Training room has been remodeled and now holds custom tables, cabinets, fl ooring and an ice machine. Outside the JFK Sports Center, the Lewis softball team now has new dugouts, a new press box and a custom windscreen for the outfi eld fence, while the outfi eld fence of Brennan Field, home of the Flyer baseball team, now has a custom windscreen as well. On the docket for both fi elds are brand new Daktron-ics scoreboards, which are slated to be fi nished by the 2011 season. What Schumacher is most proud of, however, is the performance of his student-athletes in the classroom. In the past three years, the graduation rate for Lewis student-athletes has risen from 60% to as high as 86%, while the Flyers’ Academic Success Rate (ASR) has peaked at a remarkable 98%, Schumacher has brought along seven new head

coaches, including women’s volleyball coach Lorelee Smith and men’s basketball coach Scott Trost. Smith has won two Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season championships, along with two GLVC Tourna-ment championships while losing just 17 matches in three seasons. In his second season as the head coach, Trost led the Flyers to 20 wins for just the 14th time in school history, as well as an appearance in the GLVC Tournament fi nals and a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst time since 2004. A 1986 Carl Sandburg High School graduate, Schum-acher was responsible for the fi nancial administration of Winona State athletics. Among his duties were marketing and promotions, development, external relations, corporate relations, facilities oversight, budgeting and NCAA compliance. Schumacher was the primary catalyst of a two-year campaign that generated $3 million, through private donations and newly developed athletics department revenue channels, for major improvements to Winona State’s soccer, football, baseball, softball and bas-ketball facilities. He also spearheaded a project that transformed a $42,000 annual corporate sponsorship program into an annual corporate/external relations program that generates $500,000 in scholarships for Winona State athletics and the WSU Foundation. Schumacher spent seven years with Conseco Finance Corporation prior to joining the Winona State staff, serving as Senior Credit Manager from 1995-98 and as Vice President from 1998-2002. He was a Branch Manager for TCF Bank and Mortgage Corpora-tion in Minneapolis from 1990-95. Schumacher earned a bachelor’s degree in public relations (business administration minor) in 1989 and a master’s degree in educational/school administra-tion in 2005, both at Winona State. As a member of the WSU football team, he garnered All-America honors and served two seasons as a team captain. Schumacher and wife Kristin are the parents of daughter Kasey (15) and sons Jack (12) and Declan (8).
