Atlassian is a private, global software company that builds tools for software development and collaboration.

From the Beginning

Legendary ServiceOur tools help both small and large teams with agile project management and documentation, code sharing and continu-ous integration, and even light saber development.*

Our name, Atlassian, was inspired by Atlas, the ancient Greek titan who held up the sky, providing the world’s first incredible service. We strive to provide that same level of

“Legendary Service” to each and every one of our customers.

*Just checking to see if you’re paying attention.

Ready, Set, Go!Atlassian’s co-founders, Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar, met at university and decided to start a company together at the ripe old age of 22.

Dissatisfied with the state of enterprise software—expensive, difficult to configure, requiring huge investments in consult-ing to implement and years to deploy—Mike and Scott set out to create a different kind of company.

Atlassian was founded in 2002 when we shipped our first product, JIRA, an issue and task management tool. Nearly overnight the company was profitable and self-sustainable. It was only in 2010 that we took our first round of funding from Accel Partners to help us accelerate growth and M&A. By 2011 the company had more than 17,000 customers and 400 employees worldwide.

Affordable SoftwarePrior to Atlassian, companies and teams were forced to pick between expensive and painful-to-configure enterprise software, or free, unsupported open source software. We challenged the idea that you had to pay a lot of money to get great software. Starting at just $10, our tools fit any budget. They’re a fraction of the price of enterprise software, yet come with the support and service that customers want.

TransparencyBeing open and transparent is a cornerstone of Atlassian’s identity. We’ve deployed a public version of JIRA, our issue tracker, to track all product issues and feature requests made by customers. All of our customers can vote openly for features they want to have developed in future versions. Additionally, we give our source code to every commercial license holder.

No SalesWe’ve eschewed the traditional “feet on the street” sales model in favor of word-of-mouth marketing. We have no sales people. Instead, we make our tools easy to try and easy to buy with a credit card. By focusing on engineering instead of sales, the company has been able to build world-class software that sells itself.

Giving BackWe love the open source community and use many open source components in our own development. Many of our developers participate in open source projects on their own time or company time. Atlassian has a long history of supporting open source and software development communities. Since its inception, the company has provided free licenses to thousands of open source projects and non-profit organizations.

We pride ourselves on being a different kind of company, one that has turned enterprise software sales on its head. Here are some of the reasons our customers have chosen to work with our tools:

“ Before Bamboo, we’d have no

idea which commit broke the

build, we’d have to look into

Subversion, look at the commits,

run some diffs—it was just too

much effort. Bamboo cut that

time from an hour or two a week

and made it into 30 seconds. ”Michelle HarperInterspire

“ I had no idea Confluence

could do all this . . . it

has blown me away—

you can do anything you

want. You can extend

it and create whatever

“ We are absolutely thrilled with both JIRA and Confluence. They are both stable and flexible and our developers love using them.”

Robert H. Christensen Lockheed Martin

“ We very firmly feel that

switching to JIRA was a

critical enabler in allowing us

to dramatically improve our

development workflow and

decrease the amount of time

needed to deliver new projects.

Simply put, it’s become

indispensable for us. ” Clark Richie One Economy Corporation

“ Can’t say enough good things about @atlassian support!”

@jayson_r

“ To me, the mark of success for software is when you don’t have to read the manual, and you guys have done a great job with JIRA. ”

FedEx DayWhat can you do in 24 hours? That was the question we asked our employees, and from that question we started Atlassian “FedEx Days,” a 24-hour period of time for our developers to tap into their creative side, scratch an itch, and build something new. While FedEx Days have produced plugins and features that have shipped in our products, their purpose is to help motivate and inspire people to think big.

Dan Pink, former speech writer for Al Gore, covered Atlassian FedEx Days in his book on motivation, Drive.

Open Company, No BullshitWe embrace transparency. All information, both internal and external, is public by default.

Don’t #@!% the CustomerWe want our customers to respect us in the morning. That’s why whenever we make decisions we ask ourselves how it will affect our customers first.

Build with Heart & BalanceEvery day we try to build products that are useful and that people lust after, and that account for our colleagues, customers, and stakeholders.

Be the Change You SeekWe think Gandhi had it pretty right when he said

“We need to be the change we wish to see in the world.” At Atlassian we encourage everyone to create positive change.

Play, as a TeamIt’s important to have fun with your workmates while contributing to the Atlassian team.

These are the values that guide our business, our product development, and our brand. They’re what we look for in every employee. As the company continues to evolve, one thing that remains a constant is our five values.
