Stewardship Reflection: August 18th, 2019
Today’s readings show us that it is not enough to be Christ’s disciples in name
only. To be a real disciple, we must live for Christ every day and in every as-
pect of life. This kind of life takes strength and discipline.
Intentionally and consistently offering the Lord the best of our Time, Talent,
and Treasure through a stewardship way of life is a form of spiritual discipline.
These spiritual disciplines teach us to become ever more aware of God’s con-
stant provision for us and they keep us on the narrow path towards the King-
dom of Heaven. The more we embrace this way of
life, the more we can be “trained” by the Lord in the
ways of true discipleship. Though difficult, these
disciplines become a source of spiritual strength.
Our Lord Himself speaks of the difficult path to the
Kingdom of Heaven in today’s Gospel passage
from Luke. He is asked, “Lord, will only a few be
saved?” Jesus responds, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I
tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough.” Showing up for
Mass on Sunday while living as if Christ is an afterthought the rest of the week
does not make us disciples. What’s more, this approach to our faith is an un-
just and unloving response to our good God who has given us all that we have
and are.
Jesus does not want us to merely go through the motions of faith. He wants
much more from us and for us. He wants to know us deeply and for us to get to
know Him so that we become His holy disciples. This is not a burden; it is a
privilege. But it does take discipline, the discipline of a stewardship way of life.
Enter through the Narrow Gate!
A Bulletin Reflection by
Deacon James Ogbonna
There are three ideals that we should take away from our readings today;
God’s salvation is extended to all nations, God’s kingdom of heaven is
open to all, and although the gate to heaven is open to all, it is narrow and
many will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough to make it through
the gate. Remaining steadfast in our faith and obedient to the will of God
will see us through.
In our first reading today (Isaiah 66:18-21), we learn that the Lord comes
to gather all nations unto Himself, from every land and every language.
He expects His people to witness and proclaim His glory among the na-
tions. This is a direct “calling” for all people; without distinction of lan-
guage, race, social status, or political affiliation. We are called to place
ourselves in His loving care and profess the law of the LORD as perfect,
reviving the soul. Our Divine Mercy Parish is proof of Isaiah’s prophecy.
God has called our many brothers and sisters from many nations around
the world to our parish community. Are we sharing His “sign” with others,
the proclamation that His son, Jesus can be trusted, as “Jesus, I Trust In
You.?
That is good news! Our Responsorial Psalm 11:1,2 also instructs us to
proclaim His steadfast kindness and fidelity which endures forever. We
are to go out and share the news of God’s love. He will restore our lost
glory in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ and redemptive love.
We are to take our Christian faith seriously, as St Paul shares with us in
our second reading, Hebrews 12:5-7,11-13. We are reminded that we will
experience trials and challenges and that our faith life will require obedi-
ence and discipline so that we may effectively and continuously return to
God. When we face life’s difficulties, we must endure as Christ did for us
through his suffering and death on the cross (Phil 2, 4), so that we may
follow his path and be with him in heaven.
In our Gospel reading today (Luke 13: 22-30), Christ reminds us that eve-
rything of value has a price. Admission to heaven’s big banquet hall re-
quires “striving to enter through the narrow gate.” There is no free pass for
entrance. Faith, sacrifice and obedience to the will of God are required.
(Heb.12:5-7,11-13).
On his way to Jerusalem, Jesus is asked by a listener in the crowd, "Lord,
will only a few people be saved?" He tells them that it is not important to
know how many will be saved, but to know how to achieve salvation. He
tells them to strive to enter through the narrow gate. That narrow gate is
Jesus. The wide gate is broad and is the way of the world. This road with
its many vices, sins and easy life leads us away from Jesus to destruction.
In this encounter Christ clearly tells us that getting to heaven requires
more than blindly following the law. He teaches that it is not enough to say
we belong to the 'Chosen People' or have false confidence in him. He
points out that the Jewish nation was the first invited; but may fail to get
what the last invited nation, the Gentiles, might receive. Going to Mass,
fasting participating in Church functions are good, but not in and of itself.
It is not enough to “talk the walk.” Entering the kingdom of heaven re-
quires more than claiming that you follow the Law; it requires consistently
living your faith. We must actively love our neighbor, be good stewards
for the disenfranchised and follow the example of Jesus. Coming into
Heaven requires coming through the narrow gate; living our faith, remain-
ing steadfast in prayer, being good Samaritans and promote peace as
well as justice for all the nations.
My brothers and sisters this is the only way we can be guaranteed a place
in the feast in the Kingdom of God. Therefore, we must strive to enter the
narrow gate of his Kingdom as that is Christ’s desire for us. +

Prayers of the Faithful, Sunday, August 25th, 2019
Remembering the Sick in Prayer
We have responded to God’s invitation to come to his Kingdom. We there-
fore pray with confidence.
That the Church, through the clear proclamation of the Gospel and through
works of mercy, may always comfort those who are enduring trials of every
kind.
For the priests serving in this Diocese, that they will strive to enter through
the narrow gate.
For all those called to the priesthood or consecrated life in this Diocese, that
they will endure their trials as discipline.
That as Christian Stewards we will live for Christ every day and in every
aspect of life.
That government leaders around the world may make their decisions in light
of the truth and justice that characterize God’s Kingdom.
That those who find their pregnancy a trial too difficult to bear may experi-
ence new strength from God and from the assistance of all of us. .
That the sick may experience the peace and joy that comes from trusting
God and his Providence in their lives.
That all who have died may be received into the everlasting banquet of
God.

First Reading: Isaiah 66:18-21
Nations of every language shall come
to see my glory.
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 117:1-2
Praise the Lord, all you nations.
Second Reading: Hebrews 12:5-7,11-13
Whom the Lord loves, he disciplines.
Gospel Reading: Luke 13:22-30
People will come from north and south, east and west, and take their
place in the Kingdom of God.
Background on the Gospel Reading: Today's Gospel reading is the
third of three parables in chapter 13 that deal with the theme of the unex-
pected reversals brought by the Kingdom of God. The other two parables
are about the tiny mustard seed that grows into a large tree and the small
amount of yeast that makes a large batch of dough rise. All three are
about the few and the many and the Kingdom of God.
As this parable opens, Luke reminds us that Jesus is making his way to
Jerusalem. This journey, this exodus as Luke refers to it, makes up the
entire middle of the Gospel. He is teaching as he goes. A question from
the crowd gives Jesus the chance to make a prophetic statement. Luke
uses this question device a number of times in his Gospel. A few weeks
ago, the question “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” led to the para-
ble of the Good Samaritan. The question about will only a few be saved
uses typical Christian language about salvation but also expresses the
Jewish concern about whether everyone who calls himself a Jew is actu-
ally faithful to the covenant. This was a concern of the Pharisees.
Jesus answers that they must strive in the time remaining to enter through
the narrow door because many will be trying to get in but won't be strong
enough. He then moves to a parable about another door. (The translation
says “gate” then “door,” but the same Greek word is used.) Once all those
entering the master's house are in and he locks the door, there will be no
way for others to get in. Those left outside may knock, but the master will
say he doesn't know them. Unlike the Gospel reading from a few weeks
ago where Jesus was teaching about prayer, and we were told to knock
and the door would be opened, in this parable, the master will not open
and say he does not know us. People from the north, south, east, and
west will take our place inside. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the proph-
ets will take our place in the Kingdom of God. Those who do not make it
through the narrow door will be cast out to where there is wailing and
grinding of teeth.
The image of the door is replaced in the final verses of the parable with
the image of the heavenly banquet. Two passages from the Book of Isai-
ah influence the conclusion. Isaiah 43:5-6 speaks of God bringing Israel's
descendants back from the east and from the west, the north and the
south. And Isaiah 25:6 speaks of the Lord providing a feast of rich foods
and choice wines for all peoples on his holy mountain. The answer to the
question if only a few will be saved is no. In the end, many will be saved,
but many who thought they would be saved will not be saved. The parable
is a prophetic warning to repentance in order to enter the kingdom. +
