According to some discoveries, Feng Shui can beplaced among the most ancient practices of notonly China but the entire world as well. Sincethose times, it has been carried from one genera-tion to another as well as it has been acquiringnew knowledge while deepening the alreadyexisting one. Feng Shui is a system approach tointerior design which is often characterized by aminimalist appearance, because of its emphasison de-cluttering. Its principles are compatiblewith virtually any style of architecture or interiordesign. The practice of Feng Shui emphasizes theneed for people to live in harmony with theirenvironment. To apply Feng Shui you need a
complete understanding of the Chinese conceptsof Ch'i (energy), Yin and Yang, and the FiveElements.Yīn "shady place, north slope, south bank (river);cloudy, overcast"; is the dark element: it ispassive, dark, feminine, downward-seeking, andcorresponds to the night.Yáng "sunny place, south slope, north bank(river), sunshine"; is the bright element: it isactive, light, masculine, upward-seeking andcorresponds to the daytime.Yin is often symbolized by water and air, whileyang is symbolized by fire and earth.The elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, andWater are the foundation for Feng Shui balanceand play a very important role in creating theperfect environment.WOODThe first element is wood because it is the begin-ning of new life; it is the creator of the five-element cycle.Although wood furniture is a wood
element and contains positive energy, it is lifelessand contains none or very little Ch'i. You need touse live wood in the form of a bushy plant simi-lar to a "money plant" as it holds & retains somuch live Ch'i. Plants also filter the air webreathe; it is better to use a natural form when itcomes to the wood element. Remember to feedand water the plant, because if it dies it will holdSha Ch'i, even on any dead leaves, so keep it ingood condition. Although colour is not as effec-tive, the wood element can be replaced by thecolour green. You can, of course, use both plant &colour together. - Wood represents the directionsof East and South East.
FIREFire Element is the most "Yang" of the elements.Because fire is so Yang, this is the one instancewhere colour does work well. A tea-light or tablelamp with a red shade make excellent fire reme-dies. Please be very careful when using taperedcandles or oil lamps: use tealights or votives forsafety. - Fire represents the South.EARTHEarth element is often confused with soil, whichis only part of the element. Earth needs to becombined with rock, clay, and stone etc. i.e. aterracotta pot filled with soil is a perfect earthelement, or a clay statue. Earth colours are warmtones of yellow & beige but not as effective as thereal element itself. - Earth represents the NorthEast or the South West.METALMetal can be found in many forms. Silver, Gold,Copper, and Bronze are just a few of the MetalElement. You can also be creative when using this
element; you could use a brass vase or wallplaque. When choosing an element try to look atthe shape, don't use sharp points or unattractiveobjects just because they have the element youneed. Feng Shui is about creating harmony andbalance and it should look attractive in theenvironment you put it in. The colours you shoulduse are white, gold, and silver. - Metal representsthe West and North West.WATERWater is the key element; we would not existwithout it, our planet as our body is made up ofmainly water. It is a very powerful element to use,it should always be clear and free flowing, never
let it go stagnant, as this will create manyproblems. A fountain or aquarium is ideal or asimple fishpond in the garden. Water has alwaysbeen associated with power. It has been used forthousands of years by Kings and Emperors in theform of protection as in a moat around a castle, ora powerful attraction for abundance. If you look atmost Cities today, they are either positioned nearthe water or have large lakes or rivers close by.Thousands of years ago, cities which were builtnear waterways were always more populous andprosperous as well as being inviting to travelersand tradesmen. Today, most ocean-side and lake-side homes are sought after. - The colours blue orblack can replace water.You should be careful when using the elements incertain areas. According to the experts in FengShui strategy, if used correctly the elements canhave a positive impact on wealth, health,relationships etc. For more information on FengShui, consult your local library for books on thesubject, or call an interior decorator to harmonize& energize your home.
