Learning

In this publication of Learning@Tenby we share with the Community the Learning as well as the activities that has taken place in and out school as experienced by our Tenby students. We start with the U16 Sport Festival which took place just last weekend and was hosted by our school.

Tenby Ipoh U16 Sports Festival On the weekend of 1-3 March 2019, Tenby International School, Ipoh hosted the first ever

U16 Sports Festival. Tenby was able to field 2 strong teams into the competition and were

facing tough opposition from 2 teams from Taylors International School, Kuala Lumpur as

well as one team from Tenby Setia Eco Park. Prior to this festival, our students took part in

rigorous training sessions and selection processes and proved themselves to be true

contenders in the sporting arena.

Day 1 -Friday:

Early morning on Friday all Tenby students gathered in the MPH and early anticipated the

arrival of their guests. All schools and participants were addressed and welcomed to school

by Head of National School, Mr Wong King Tung. We were all then treated to an outstanding

performance from the cheerleading team.

Teams then made their way to their respective playing areas. Friday

morning saw all girls taking part in football and the boys taking part

in basketball. The competition was fierce and played in good spirits.

Tenby girls finished 3rd and 4th in the football and the boys finished

3rd and 4th in the basketball to end off a very busy and warm morning.

Teams then got together to share a lunch and exchange discussion

about the morning activities.

Once lunch was done all participants then made their way to the swimming complex to take

part in the afternoon swimming gala. Again, competition was tough, but our swimmers

showed grit and performed to the best of their abilities.

Tenby teams again placed 3rd and 4th for the afternoon.

Day 2 -Saturday:

Another early start to the day as all teams gathered in the MHP and then made their way to

their sports areas. Boys would be taking part in football and girls would take on basketball. Some incredible performances and results in the respective competitions and all players and coaches were pleased with the performances.

In boys football the Tenby teams placed 3rd and 4th and

in the girls’ basketball the girls also placed 3rd and 4th.

Teams then gathered for lunch and relationships amongst all participants continued to grow and develop. After lunch all girls gathered in the MPH for the netball

competition and boys gathered on the basketball courts for volleyball.

Boys having only just learned to play volleyball performed well and improved as the competition progressed, however only managed to finish 4th and 5th. The girls on the

other hand were experienced in netball and were ready for the challenge. Suffering a narrow defeat to Taylor’s the girls we left with a 2nd place finish, which was an

outstanding result for a team that does not get as much game time as their opposition.

On Saturday evening all teams then went out for an evening of recreational bowling

and continued to develop their relationship and really got to interact with all other

teams. The evening was just what all participants and coaches needed after 2 very

tiring days of intense competition.

Sunday:

The final day of competition with only badminton left to play.

Here both boys teams entered 2 teams, both girls teams

entered 2 teams and both teams entered a mixed doubles

team. Our Tenby teams performed exceptionally well and

never gave up throughout the competition. Notable

achievements include the following. Tenby team A mixed

Page 3: Learning@TenbyTenby No. 4.pdf · Learning@Tenby 8th March 2019 Richard Davidson Learning In this publication of Learning@Tenby we share with the Community the Learning as well as

doubles finished 2nd overall and Tenby Team A Boys were

undefeated and took home the gold medals and trophy. Overall

Tenby finished 3rd.

This was a truly successful competition and fun was had by all.

Relationships were developed and will continue to grow as these

kinds of events continue to improve. A final word from me to all

Tenby Players: “You all should hold your heads up high and be

proud of your achievements. You have done yourself, your school

and me very proud and I wish you all the success in the world in

future events.”

Factors and multiples are used in daily life which involve numbers that are multiplied or

numbers that are obtained from arrangement of rows or groups. Students initially struggle in

problems solving and interpretation questions. The example below is involving Factors.

Students learned about Factorisation & Multiplication in their previous lesson.

Then, they attempted some challenging questions according to their level.

Strategy 1 : Understanding the problem Strategy 2 : Devising a plan

Page 7: Learning@TenbyTenby No. 4.pdf · Learning@Tenby 8th March 2019 Richard Davidson Learning In this publication of Learning@Tenby we share with the Community the Learning as well as

I found the problem-solving question to be challenging. I would need help from my friends or

teachers to solve this kind of questions. Although it is hard, I could answer the question and I

am looking forward to getting more challenging questions. [Zi Xin F1T]

I needed to think deeply and analyse the questions carefully to master this chapter. I did

mistakes at first and had no confidence in using multiplication to get the answer. After several

attempts, I succeeded. Maths isn’t that difficult after all. [Jing Han F1T]

For me, the question given is very challenging. I struggled at the beginning and we discussed

among our group members. At last, we solved it as a whole group. [Jing Hao F1T]

We strongly believe that the foundation of students’ success lies in a deep-rooted

understanding of the concepts and a well-constructed activity.

Our students experience the effectiveness of group discussion by sharing their ideas while

solving Mathematics questions and they get better when the challenge gets tougher.

In an effective group discussion, students eliminate their fear, develop self-belief and enjoy

Mathematics through well-planned strategies which promote good struggle in their learning.

At the end of the lesson, students were able to become effective communicators, creative

thinkers and independent learners as stated in the learning objective.

Students try to answer ONE problem solving question on Factorisation. After

some struggle, students were able to answer the question by discussing among

their teammates. Finally, students countercheck their answers with the teacher.

Strategy 3 : Implementing the strategy Strategy 4 : Doing reflection

YEAR 10 ART & DESIGN

The Visual Elements of line, shape, tone, pattern, texture and form are the building blocks of

composition in art. ... Shapes can be filled with tone with a smooth transition of heavy and

light control. A shape may be rendered with a rough surface to create a texture.

Monochromatic colour schemes are derived from a single base hue and extended using its

shades, tones and tints. Tints are achieved by adding white and shades and tones are

achieved by adding a darker colour, grey or black. ... This is not monochromatic in the strictly

scientific meaning of the word.

“One of the topics that caught my eye was

composition, it makes me think of various

perspective on objects. Monochrome art was a big

challenge for me as it is difficult to get the right

tones, where to place the darker/lightest shade. I

believe that practicing can help me improve the

skill, methods and techniques.” (Winnie)

“I’ve learnt many new techniques about black & white media but

monochrome media has truly captured my interest. It is quite challenging

as I have not done this media before and it is

interesting how a painting can develop using 1

hue (Colour).” (Phoebe)

“I have learned various method of how to

create tones by using charcoal and brushes.

I can also use multiple hatches, lines for

texture in my drawing. Monochrome is an

interesting and quite challenging topic which

I need to practice frequently by exploring different hues.”

(Veronica)

“Beside the topic, I learnt that even shoes have their own characters and shading, toning and

texture are all elements that bring the shoe alive in art on a paper. I need to explore more with

other elements and methods as they all come together to complete a good piece of Art work.”

(Merissa)

“I have learnt about black & white media, smooth transition,

tones, shade, texture, composition and lastly monochrome art.

I found it challenging, it is good to learn different kinds of

media, techniques and to explore various painting styles too. I

still have room for improvement and will practice more.”

(Justin)

“I have learned how to do toning, shading, and methods of creating

levels of tones by controlling water and monochrome painting style. I

found it to be challenging but also an

interesting topic at the same time.”

(Rakshita)

IPC –Time Detectives

We began our Term 2 by putting on our archaeologists and detectives hats to find out about

the past. We set up a ‘Time Detectives’ museum in our classroom too. Throughout this topic,

we learnt about where people lived, what people did and what happened to them. We set up

a mini museum in our classroom for our entry point and we went to Taiping Museum for our

exit point field trip.

Year 2

Learning Journey…

We are pretending to be the ‘Little Archaeologist’. We used simple tools

such as small spades, trowels and forks to dig for artefacts and fossils.

Page 14: Learning@TenbyTenby No. 4.pdf · Learning@Tenby 8th March 2019 Richard Davidson Learning In this publication of Learning@Tenby we share with the Community the Learning as well as

It’s puzzle time! These are pictures of

artefacts and fossils. Some puzzles are

really challenging and it took us some time

to put the pieces together.

Year 2T’s and 2E’s fun-filled

trip to Taiping Museum! Look

at the elephant fossil behind

us!!!

We walked around the museum and were amazed by what we saw! We never

knew all these things had existed before. It felt good to find out what and how

the lives of our ancestors had been like. We also realised that lives in the past

weren’t as easy as it is now. Technology has certainly made things so much

easier for us in the present!

Literacy

It was really interesting to learn the effects of using different punctuation in a story. We also

used musical instruments such as triangles and castanets to express the tone of the sentence

in a story. We learnt to write and sequence stories. It was great to be the author and illustrator

of our own story.

First, we planned our story. Then, we

drew pictures on the story frame.

Lastly, we sequenced them in order

from beginning to the end of the story.

We are putting the

story ‘Jack and the

Beanstalk’ in

sequence.

Zhi Chen is the

illustrator! He is

drawing the pictures

for the story ‘Jack and

the Beanstalk’.

Gia is the author of the story ‘Jack and

the Beanstalk’. We all worked together

as a team to contribute ideas.

Science - Materials

In Science, we learnt about different materials. We also conducted some experiments to

investigate the properties of materials. Our favourite experiment was the paper bag

investigation. Our big question was ‘Which type of material makes the strongest bag?’ We

were provided with bags made of different types of materials and water bottles. We made a

hypothesis before carrying out our investigation. We found out that the cardboard paper bag

is the strongest and the tissue paper bag is the weakest.

OH MY

GOODNESS!! WE

HOPE OUR

PREDICTIONS

WERE CORRECT!!

IPC Science

In Science, we looked for information using the iPads. We wanted to find out about different

animals and how they use their taste buds. Some animals have taste buds on their tongue

and some even have their taste buds on their feet. We learnt that having an abundance of

taste buds increases an animal's ability to detect even trace amounts of food.

We found so many

interesting facts

about animals and

compare how they

taste food!!!

IGCSE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY COURSEWORK PROJECT

The coursework project is the heart of the IGCSE Design and Technology examination because

it stands 50% of the overall grade. However, unlike every other exam, this exam consists of fun

while learning.

After a lot of designing and planning, all D&T students will be able to make their own chosen

product. The diary of making will be documented showing pictures and descriptions of their

progress. I have decided to make toy box to store toys neatly and easily.

After preparing all the materials I need, I marked out and cut out

the pieces of pine wood I need according to my cutting list I made

earlier using the reciprocating saw, band

saw and the tenon saw. I learnt how to

use the power tools correctly while using

it. Then, I sand the pine wood using a belt

and disc sander, palm sander and sand

paper to make sure the sides of the pine

wood are smooth and straight. This is

important because this can prevent children from hurting or

scratching themselves from the sharp corners and splinters.

I have used a brush to spread wood glue to

make butt joints. G-clamps are also used

to clamp the butt joint together until the

joint is secure. An engineer square is also

used to make sure that the joint is 90

degrees straight.

A hand drill is used to drill in the wood screws and washers

(to increase aesthetics). Firstly, a hole is drilled using a

suitable drill bit and the hand drill to fit the wood screw.

Then, the hand drill with a screw bit is used to screw in the

wood screw. A countersink is made to ensure that the head of

the wood screw is inside the pine wood to increase

aesthetics.

Page 21: Learning@TenbyTenby No. 4.pdf · Learning@Tenby 8th March 2019 Richard Davidson Learning In this publication of Learning@Tenby we share with the Community the Learning as well as

I used a soft brush to paint the cover of the toy box and to varnish the body of the toy box.

Laser cutting is used for my corners of my toy box to increase

aesthetics. I have picked a pattern to be laser cut and edited to

fit the size of the pine wood. I printed the pattern on a piece of

plywood so that I know where the laser cut pattern will be

printed at. Then, I placed the pine wood on top of the position

of the laser cut pattern.

I measured the positions of the wheels and hinges

using a pencil, steel rule and an engineer square. A

screwdriver and wood

screws are then used to

attach the polypropylene

wheels and hinges to the

toy box.

Final Design

I learnt many techniques when making this product and a lot of questions were asked in order

to improve my toy box. There were many mistakes made when making this product, but I

managed to correct it and continue. I feel grateful that the product is successfully finished.
