continually rising since September and this event helps us to market our wonderful school. Learning Live Tour School Tours still take place every Thursday from 8am to 9am. Tenby Schools, Penang celebrated Sweets Day in conjunction with the Tamil New Year this morning, 28 April. The whole-school event was led by Sri Tenby Secondary School. Students and staff were all gathered under the canopies, waiting for the event to begin. The campus Principal, Mr. Iain Sallis and all Heads of schools graced the event. There was the traditional ‘Lighting of the Lamps’ ceremony (“kuttu vilaku villa”). The Principal and Heads of Schools lighted the wicks of the oil lamps to symbolise triumph of good over evil and the creation of positive energy

Next, was the pot- breaking event, known as “uri adithal” in tamil (“uri” means pot; “adithal” means hit) The colourful clay pot, filled with sweets and candies was suspended from a metal frame. To usher in good luck for the New Year, the pot must be hit with a stick until it breaks, releasing all the sweets that symbolise good luck, health and wealth. The catch is, the person who attempts to break the pot must do so- blindfolded!

Our Principal very sportingly allowed himself to be blindfolded. Then he ‘took aim’. and managed to break the pot!

Security We are currently in the process of printing tags. Unfortunately some of our parents have still not replied to requests to provide pictures. Tags will only be for parents to use when in school. Car stickers will still be used to gain entry however not sufficient if you choose to enter the building. We will be publishing more information in the near future. Iain Sallis (Campus Principal)

Talented students and teachers from the primary and secondary schools entertained everyone with energising dance and song presentations

Everyone had a great time, gauging from the loud applause and cheers. However, what is most important is the participation of all 4 schools in the event and the support given by students and staff !

Thank you and we look forward to Sweets Day in 2018.

Message for Head Of School

Welcome back to school after the short break. I hope you found the short break helpful in recharging yourself for the term ahead.

We have finished the Tahun 6 Test 1 last term and will be giving out the results in the next few days. This term will see the other standards having their Mid-Year Examination, a summative examination in the month of June 2017. For the Tahun 6 students they will have their UPSR Trial Examination also in the month of June 2017. In addition to that under the KSSR curriculum all students will have assessments 2 and 3 in this term. Students should pay more attention on learning new knowledge and skills. Pay attention in class while the teacher is teaching

Assembly

Our school assembly is a time where students and teacher gather together for a common purpose be it to communicate information, motivate students, for student presentations or acknowledging students’ or class achievements. It is always interesting and engaging for the students as well as teachers. Last week during the school assembly Harinee resented a story entitled “The Boastful Sparrow”

Although this term is going to be a short term it will to be a busy term in terms of academic matters.

The beginning of the term would be a good time to reflect on what has been achieved and what we are working towards. With that in mind we can then plan on how to move towards our target. Things that we are performing well should be continued and things that are not going well should be reflected on and improved.

Now would be a good time to remind our students about a few rules:

1. Playing during recess or lunch break. As physical activities are good for the body and mind, play in the field but wear a school cap

Best class for the month of March 2017, Tahun 5.

Around the classrooms

The KSSR curriculum aims to develop each individual to attain his/her maximum potential in a holistic manner. In addition it aims to equip our students with 21st century skills. It hopes to achieve this through the transformation of the curriculum. One aspect of this transformation is to use a wide variety of pedagogy in the classroom.

Students in Tahun 5 role played the official presentation of computers to a villager by a member parliament. Through this activity they learnt how to plan and implement the event.

Counselling and Motivational talks

The counseling and motivational talks are held bimonthly, for one hour per session.

All students from STSS attend these sessions conducted by Ms. Lim Hooi Teen, the counselor for Sri Tenby Schools.

The students benefit a great deal from the sessions as they learn to understand themselves better and develop positive attitudes. Activities are aimed at discovery of the self and from there students move towards developing self -esteem.

Students are also guided through activities to cope with stress, anxiety and other negative emotions.

There are always solutions to challenges and through counseling and team support, all students come to the realization that help is at hand. They need to just reach out.

A big thank you to Ms. Lim for her patience and help.

Anger management, time management and emotional management.

Increasing self-awareness and developing positive attitudes.

Promoting teamwork and peaceful study environment.

Friday Assembly presentation: Healthy Eating

The theme for Friday 21st April assembly was ‘Healthy eating’. The presentation by the fifth formers highlighted the importance of eating right for a healthy lifestyle.

Karshvin and Ken Loong talked about the six steps to healthy eating from controlling calorie intake, drinking enough water, eating fruits and vegetables, avoiding sugary foods, keeping portions moderate to consuming a variety of foods.

Gaautham and Winona proceeded to explain the types of foods that should be included in a balanced diet

They got the students engaged with colourful and informative slides to illustrate their ideas.

The presenters also took questions from the audience.

I have been busy auditioning the children for this year’s annual TIPS performance The Rocky Monster Show, we shall be performing it on Thursday 22nd June at Penang Pac. please keep this date free so that you will be able to come and see all the children perform..

A fantastic variety of characters were seen in Year 5 this week as they launched their new IPC theme- Myths and legends by dressing up as characters from these tales. They will now go on to learn all about the stories and their origins as well as writing their own and performing them as plays.

Flood Warning!

As our wonderful Year 13’s are about to leave the comfort and safety Tenby Sixth Form, I am sure that tears will be shed when remembering what has been. But in saying goodbye there is so much ‘good’ in the memories and friendships that root our students to the Tenby Family. This is also the beginning of a new and exciting chapter for each one of them and we wish them every success as they journey forward seeking new challenges and adventures.

We are also delighted to announce that we have reached our target for Tenby Sixth Form. Twenty-five conditional offers have been made and we look forward to everyone joining us on the induction day in June to start the A Level programme. A letter went home today regarding Horizons Week in July. Further details are available on the Parent Portal. Do remember to check your Parent Portal and also the fortnightly newsletter for updates on school activities and special events.

MISS CAROLYN

This newsletter has allowed me to showcase the skills of the KS3 Marketing Team. The team consists of a group of Y7 and Y8 students who have taken on the challenge of making visual reports of the fantastic things that are happening in Key stage 3.I have been extremely proud of the students presenting in assemblies and observing their growing confidence. I continually see students taking on new challenges and involving themselves in the many opportunities that are on offer to them. The final term is always an exciting one so I look forward to being inspired by our young leaders.

Jorja joined Tenby in Year 4 and she is currently in Year 7. In school she particularly enjoys drama and netball. Outside of school she enjoys playing the piano. She loves Japanese food. Her advice to any student in Tenby is ‘Don’t hide in the Shadows’

On Saturday April 22nd, 4 students represented Tenby in Penang State 2017 Chinese Poetry Competition at Penang Chinese Town Hall. There were a total 24 schools competing in this event and it was very competitive! However, our students enjoyed the stage, performed their BEST and made new friends.

Please follow this link to watch their fantastic performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3M0XJhatyw

Loh Kho Jing (Y10):

“Honestly it was a nerve-racking day, from the moment we set foot in the hall until the very end. Yet, it was pleasantly overwhelming. It was amazing to see many contestants. We had less than a month of preparation but I had full confidence that we were going to do well. It was a great experience and an honour to compete with my team mates.”

Wang Yi Jia (Y10):

“It was a competitive poetry competition. There were many schools striving to become this year’s champions and tall schools performed well and at a high level. I found it challenging in term of using the original standard pronunciation, expressions and presentation. In the future, I will continue to improve to be slower, steadier and more confident during the poetry recitation. It was a rewarding experience.”

Claranita (Y10):

“I have gained more knowledge after joining the competition. Being able to compete together with my outstanding group mates is a pleasure. Having about 3 weeks to memorize the poem and synchronise among the group was actually quite tough but WE MADE IT!”

“This week was the most stressful week for the first few months of 2017 as I have had the poem competition and checkpoint exam. Before the competition, we had been training very hard (I needed to practice every morning and lunch). I will never forget the intense training especially the final day practice which was from 9am till 11.40am. Thanks Ms. Yeoh, Mr. Choo and also Mr. Alex for teaching us. ”
