TENBY SCHOOLS PENANG E- NEWSLETTER
Issue # 34 12th May 2017
Message from Campus Principal
Mr. Iain Sallis
Dear Parents With iGCSE’s and A levels in full flow, spare a thought for our students who are working hard to ensure they perform to their peak over this stressful period. Exams even took place through the Wesak holiday. I actually enjoyed exam periods especially when you could say you had tried your very best however with hard work should come celebration. Yr. 13 leavers and Yr. 11 students will be attending a number of events in June and July including E&O tea party and graduation dinners at the Rasa Hotel. Good luck to all Yr. 10, 11, 12 and 13 sitting exams. We are also celebrating our largest numbers of Sixth Form applications for 2017, almost reaching 30! Although some of our students will be moving onto other things many of our young people have chosen to stay with us. Applications for scholarships for both Yr. 10 and Yr. 12 are being accepted with the deadline being 22
nd May 2017. Please see website for more
details under admissions tab. Sadly Year 13 students will leave us this year and with UCAS offers from Warwick, Birmingham, Reading, Kings College London, University of San Diego USA and Monash University, Australia we will once again have a truly international representation across top Universities globally. Principals Talk – Going for CIS Accreditation and 3 Year plan On Saturday 17
th June I will be giving a talk to parents
on the topic of School Accreditation - The 3 Year Plan. This is an open event and all parents who have this line of interest are welcome to attend. This will take place between 9am and 10am on the Library. 2017/2018 Calendar The dates for next year’s calendar are on our website and will be on the parent engage calendar for your perusal. The dates are published until July 2018. Please take note.
Open Day Our next Open Day for prospective parents will be on Saturday 17
th June so please help us spread the word
to new parents and friends. Our numbers have been continually rising since September and this event helps us to market our wonderful school. Trusted Brand Readers Digest Award We're very proud to inform that Tenby Schools have repeated last year's success in being recognised under the Gold standard classification in the Readers Digest Awards for Malaysia's most trusted brands. These are selected through a survey carried out by market research company, Catalyst Research to find those products or services that are most respected as 'brands' by the public. Perhaps the two most important criteria for people to trust a brand are honesty and authenticity. We thank all - parents, students and staff who contribute to building this reputation. Together, we can grow stronger yet – Mr Mark Parkinson - Tenby CEO

Class Presentation Tahun 2 - Diorama
Tahun 2 students presented their projects about
Habitats for animals. Many of them chose the water
habitat and created dioramas to explain their
understanding of a water habitat.
They showed their dioramas and explained what they
have made during the presentation.
The students showed that they not only understand the
meaning of the word “habitats” but were creative in
constructing the dioramas to show their understanding.
Sweets Day Unfortunately I had to take the blind off in order to connect with the Sweets. Thank you to Mdm Thum and her team for arranging such a fantastic event to celebrate Tamil New Year.
Learning Live Tour School Tours still take place every Thursday from 8am to 9am. Please email Ms Stephanie for a place on [email protected] or phone 04 892 7777.

Science Workshop for Tahun 6
Some students attended a Science Workshop
organised on 1st May 2017 at Sekolah Rendah Seri
Mutiara, Penang.
The aim of the wokshop was to instill in our young
students the love for Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics subjects (STEM).
They were taught many strategies on how to learn
science through hands-on activities. These strategies
will make the learning of science interactive and
stimulate their interest in the subject. Photographs
show our students in action during the workshop.
Thank You, Miss Teoh for making this happen.

Puppet Show by students of Tahun 6
Congratulations to all Tahun 6 students for the
impressive and entertaining puppet show they
presented during the assembly. The presentation was
done with puppets which were animated by the
students acting as puppeteers. The hand puppets were
well constructed, colourful and attractive. The show
was accompanied with music that reflected the theme
of the show.
This is the language arts component of the KSSR
English curriculum. It involves higher order thinking
skills and creativity of the students.

PT3 - History 2017 Project Paper
The History paper for PT3 is fully project based. The
time frame is from 2nd to 26th May
The title for this year's assignment is:
"Peristiwa Bersejarah Di Tempat Tinggal Anda". (An
event that has a historical impact in the area which you
live.”)
Candidates are required to write a report of not less
than 300 words. They are also required to do a
presentation of their project papers. .
The Ministry of Education also provides guidelines for
the assignment in terms of format and content.
Many STSS students choose to write on the historic
impact of the SUKMA Games, Malaysia, in 2000. To
get a feel of the venue, the students, accompanied by
their History teacher, Mr. Hakimi, made a visit to the
Batu Kawan Sports Stadium where many events were
held.
They also interviewed coaches and athletes who were
involved in the games
Another group of students are working on an
assignment on the 1988 tragedy at the Sultan Abdul
Halim Ferry Terminal in Butterworth.
The sudden collapse of the ferry terminal resulted in 32
deaths and at least 1674 people were injured.
Students managed to interview personnel from the
Penang Port Authority apart from
doing research on the tragedy.

Friday Assembly Presentation: 5 May 2017
The Form 2 students presented some simple and
interesting mathematics tricks and tips.
Here, give it a try and have some fun with mathematics!
1) Subtracting any number from 1000
Subtract every number except the last
from 9 and subtract the final number
from 10.
2) Ninety-nine
Write down any two different numbers
from 1 to 9. Then reverse the two
numbers. You should have two-digit
numbers.
Subtract the smaller number from
larger one.
Mandarin Class – Form 1
The Form 1 students had an engaging time during the
Mandarin class conducted by Ms. Teh Xing Yee.
Students learnt about parts of the body, correct
pronunciation and writing of the different parts of the
body.
Reverse the digits of the result from
the previous step and add that number
to the one you subtracted.
The result will always be 99!
3) Multiplying any number by 11
Take any two-digit number and leave a
space between the digits.
Next, `add these two numbers
together and now you can fit in the
answer into the space between the 2
original digits. The combined numbers
would be your answer!
BINGO – Parts of the Body
1) Find the correct labels from the papers.
2) Match the labels on the body parts.
3) Get three rows of five in a row (horizontal,
vertical or diagonal).
4) First three students who get all correct
answers will get a prize.

Dear Parents,
Any visitors to TIPS over the past few weeks would be
impressed by the many and varied exciting
opportunities for learning that your children have been
given. Educational visits to Escape for Year 6 followed
by a BBQ and sleepover at school, Dancing at Sweets
Day for our Early Years and KS1 children, Children
dressed as Famous characters from Myths & Legends
in Year 5, Swimming lessons, preparation for Sports
Day are just a few. All the children from Nursery to
Year 2 had another unique experience today- they
went to the Theatre to see the production of STUCK.
This will help them in their daily Literacy work as well
as help them as they prepare for our up-coming school
production of The Rocky Monster Show in June.
We are delighted to be having 3 Australian Teachers
join us next week for a placement of two weeks. This is
part of our link with Charles Darwin University which is
now in its 3rd
year. This is a great opportunity for both
the teachers and the students. We are sure that they
will enjoy their time with the TIPS community.

Ms Marian

Year 6- Sleepover
Year 6 had a fantastic evening following their adventurous day at Escape. They played games organised by Gem, from our 6
th Form as a starter. After enjoying a delicious BBQ they enjoyed an evening of singing and games before
they had to erect their tents. The children showed excellent teamwork skills and thoroughly enjoyed their time at school overnight. An early morning start with breakfast and a swim in our pool was a great way to end this event for all our Year 6 children. A big thank you to Ms Etta, and the TIPS staff who supported during the evening.

TEBNY INTERNATIONAL
SECONDARY
By Elizabeth
Tenby International Secondary School:
As our Year 13 students settle quickly and maturely into their exams I wonder if realisation has set in yet. In a short amount of time they will be the next group of young adults spreading their wings as they set off into the world to begin the next stage of their life, and that school is just ‘the end of the beginning’.
What will our Tenby 2017 graduates be doing in 5 years’ time, or even 10 years’ time?
The most recent research indicates that young adults
now entering the big wide world of work will change
career path at least 3 to 5 times in their life. As a
teacher now, it is difficult to contemplate that most jobs
that our students will go in to do not even exist yet!
Congratulations to Leon!
We are so proud to announce that Leon has received a
conditional offer from one of the prestigious Russell
Group Universities. He will be heading towards the UK
to read Genetics at Kings College London.
Big thanks to Parents and Guardians
As our students are confidently working through their
examinations, I would like to personally thank our
parents and guardians for your on-going support of
your son or daughter during what can be a stressful
time. Your role is extremely significant as you help to
guide and build their confidence. So thank you for
feeding, encouraging, loving, motivating and being
there for these amazing young people. You are their
true heroes!
By Paula
How do we prepare them for that? The answer is that we prepare them to be resilient, hardworking, ambitious but respectful learners who can, and will, adapt to future demands.
To all our Year 13 Tenby Graduates, the teachers and staff are exceptionally proud of you. You have been fantastic role models for all our students and we wish you good luck in the remainder of your exams. We look forward to celebrating at your graduation and on results day in August. You have certainly made a mark here at Tenby and have raised the bar high. You will all be missed, but it is now nearly time for you to begin the next chapter of your very bright futures.
Miss Liz

Year 7I led a fantastic
assembly about the
damage humans are
causing the world with
ideas about what we
can do to help reduce
our negative footprint.
The assembly was done
as poem which they
wrote themselves and it
was a very powerful
message which fits with
our core values of
respect and international
mindedness.
It’s been a busy week for Tudor and Antonia Martin as last
weekend they competed in a Public Speaking competition
at INTI College. They were competing against students
that were 16-19 and performed superbly. Antonia won a
consolation prize while Tudor came 2nd
runner up. Both
students performed excellently.

Year 10-Bahasa Malaysia (Recycling
Project)
By: Ms Meighala K
In this topic, students learned about the
importance of recycling. Students were separated
into 6 different groups, to plan and make objects
out of recyclable materials. For example;
newspaper, magazines, unwanted clothes,
plastics bottles etc. It is very important for us to
look after our environment for our benefit and for
next generation. It also will improve the changes
such as global warming.
