TENBY SCHOOLS PENANG E- NEWSLETTER Issue #42 24 th November 2017 Message from Campus Principal Mr. Iain Sallis Dear Parents We are delighted to announce yet another improvement in UPSR results in our National Primary. The GPA of 1.72 is even better than the 2.03 GPA from the year 2016. I would guess looking at the previous year’s results this will be the best result in the state. Thank you so much to staff and students for working incredibly hard to achieve this. It is a sign of both high quality teaching, high quality students and of course high quality parents! Having four schools on one site at times can be challenging however the strengths far out way the weaknesses. Two calendar years allows us to formally celebrate at different times and really focus on student achievement of a particular school. This December period is centre stage for the National Schools before their year ends on Wednesdays 29 th November. The Form 5 students have been studying hard for SPM exams and this culminates in the Awards Day on the 29 th November. We wish our Form 5’s all the best in their next stages. They are truly fabulous and I personally will miss them. I believe our National schools offer something that no other campus offers on the island. It is an extremely good option for those parents that want high quality education and elements of Internationalism which other local and Chinese schools simply cannot offer. New PE We have restructured the PE department for 2018 and we are pleased to announce Ms Josephine Ooi as Head of PE for the campus and Mr Tan, Deputy Head of PE for the campus. International and National PE departments have merged to create a team of 5. TENBY SCHOOLS PENANG E- NEWSLETTER

Issue #42 24th November 2017

Message from Campus Principal

Mr. Iain Sallis

Dear Parents

We are delighted to announce yet another improvement in UPSR results in our National Primary.

This December period is centre stage for the National Schools before their year ends on Wednesdays 29th November. The Form 5 students have been studying hard for SPM exams and this culminates in the Awards Day on the 29th November.

New PE

We have restructured the PE department for 2018 and we are pleased to announce Ms Josephine Ooi as Head of PE for the campus and Mr Tan, Deputy Head of PE for the campus. International and National PE departments have merged to create a team of 5. We believe this will close the gap between the International and National students’ participation levels and give the PE team more capacity to provide high quality educational and a better breadth of sports. We will be meeting with TSPA members to discuss 2018 plans in January 2018.

New CCA’s 2018

There are some significant changes to CCA’s. We have added approximately 20 new CCA’s (many free) based on student feedback. There will be a clearer

definition of sports clubs and teams within the CCA programme. The new PE department will offer sports in seasons from 2018 with off season, pre-season and competitive season on offer. These will be linked to Penang International Schools League and MSSPP seasons. Other CCA developments include 3 new SQL STEM projects including robot building, application building and SQL for beginners.

Halloween

Halloween or Tenby Fright Night was a success as usual. This now historic event never ceases to amaze. Around 500 students attended the event many more including parents. We raised funds for a number of activities and charities including Save the Children Fund and RuYi’s children home. Thank you to Ms Sophie and the events team (student council) for supporting and organising. A great team effort.

TSPA AGM

40 parents attended the TSPA AGM this Thursday. Many areas were discussed including accounts and the new constitution along with the appointment of new officials. We actually had 10 parents nominated for 3 EXCOM positions so the support was fantastic. The TSPA have managed to give 98% of all profits back to the school. Thank you to Siew Yean, Emi and Cindy for leading the way! School Opening and Closing times and Students on site

All schools will finish at 1pm on the day of their specific closure.

Please be aware that all students should be off site after their final CCA or activity. We have a growing number of students on site after hours. The last CCA finishes at 5:20pm and we expect all parents to ensure students are then collected. Teachers and staff are off site after this time and for health and safety reason student’s need to be offsite too.

Campus Principal Tours

The old Learning Live tours are now called Campus Principal Tours and take place every week on Thursdays from 8:10am to 9:10am. This is for existing and new parents and involves a tour by the Campus Principal and an opportunity to see the school at work, attend lessons and discuss learning. Annual Scouts Camp 2017

The 2017 Scouts camp was a great success. 44 scouts from the primary and secondary attended. The two days one night camp saw the scouts involved in many activities like pitching their tents, hiking, aquatic Zumba, night owl activities, tying knots and cooking. All these activities encourage them to be self reliant, increase courage, increase competitiveness and work cooperatively. During the camp there were hilarious moments and memorable moments. Most important of all is the camaraderie that was established during the camp.

All the participants enjoyed themselves tremendously and there was a tinge of sadness when they broke camp.

Transition Day

Following the completion of the recent PT3 examinations, a Post PT3 Programme was organized for the Form 3’s. One of the activities was Transition Day where students get to experience school life in the upper form along with the Form 4 seniors. They could, either attend classes in the Science Stream or the Arts Stream for the day. This would help them decide on the subjects they wish to study in Form 4. As for me, I chose to go for the lessons in Science stream. We had lots of fun learning the subjects like Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Additional Mathematics and Accounts, which were quite different from subjects in Form three. By the end of the day, students were left with a clearer view of the stream they would like to join next year.

As the school year draws to a close, I take this opportunity to thank all parents, for your support and commitment to both the school and your child. It has been a very busy and successful year, with lots of activities and events having taken place, apart from classroom learning.

I would also like to thank the students and teachers for your hard work. To the Form five students who will be leaving STSS, I wish you all the very best as you embark on your education journey after SPM. I am sure you will make huge contributions to whatever you choose to do.

I look forward to seeing parents, students and teachers in 2018 and to greater success for STSS.

Have a happy and restful holiday.

Anti-bullying Awareness during joint assembly

The Sri Tenby Secondary School students led a presentation on anti-bullying during the joint secondary school assembly. They highlighted the main types of bullying – physical, verbal, social and cyber and some of the reasons bullying occurs. These include peer pressure, family issues and envy. Actual cases of bullying that were fatal were also cited. The students also created awareness that victims or bystanders can all play a role in preventing bullying. People can make a stand, speak up and act on cases of bullying and not let indifference or fear paralyse them into not doing the right thing. Students and teachers from STSS and TISS wrapped up the presentation with inspirational quotes, highlighting the message that everyone has a voice – no matter your race, age or gender to make a stand against bullying. – By Nadea Ramlee

Cameron Highlands Trip It was the morning of the 8th of November, when everyone was excited ready to go on the trip to the Cameron Highlands for 3 days and 2 nights! It was an educational trip for all students. We visited lots of interesting places with very enlightening commentaries. The Orchid and Rose Garden, was a sight to behold. Paradise on earth! We visited other places such as MARDI Agro Technology, Bharat Tea Plantation, Strawberry Farm, Butterfly Farm and Cactus Point. On the last day of the trip, we went to the Kea Farm and Lavender Garden. The weather was refreshing and we got to experience temperature as low as 16 degrees in the night. It was not just all fun. Students from each class were tasked to submit a video that included interesting things we had done in Cameron Highlands. As one of the participants, I feel grateful for being given the opportunity to travel alongside my teachers and friends, strengthening our bond in the process. I will never trade all the fun we had and the times we shared for anything else in the world! We all look forward to more trips in 2018.

Dear Parents,

We have had a fantastic few weeks at TIPS. KS1 and Early Years have been rehearsing their play. I have had the opportunity to hear some of the songs and they sound amazing. The effort the children have put into learning their lines, the songs and the dances has been incredible. We are all looking forward to seeing ‘You Can’t Catch the Gingerbread Man’ next week.

Parent and Child Reading Session

We would like to invite all TIPS parents to our library on Thursday 30th November to read with your child. We are constantly promoting the love of reading and would like to give you the opportunity to see our library, look at the books and share a story with your child.

• Reading to children encourages them to become readers.

• Books will help your children’s imaginations soar.

• Listening to stories will help develop your child’s attention span.

• Children who read regularly have a greater vocabulary.

DISCO – Thursday 7th December Everyone is getting ready to dance at our end of Term 1 DISCO. Mr Donovan is preparing the music and TSPA will be providing the refreshments. We will end this term with a great party on Thursday 7th December, 5.30pm -7pm. Tickets for pupils are on sale now.

Early Years at TIPS

Our Early Years department promotes the importance of active and child-initiated learning and the boundless benefits it brings. Through following our EYFS Early Learning goals, we see it as our responsibility to provide an environment that promotes and provides opportunities for child led learning and play. Play is essential for children’s development, building their confidence as they learn to explore, to think about problems, and relate to others. Through playing and exploring, children begin to investigate and experience new things as well as gain the confidence to 'have a go.' Play also encourages great communication and provides key opportunities for speaking and listening, another crucial element in EYFS. Active learning inspires children to concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and to enjoy achievements. Class teachers plan and prepare areas that support child led learning such as role plays and small world set ups that are linked to both the child's interests and their day to day experiences (such as shopping in a supermarket or visiting a doctor).

In our Tenby EYFS, we encourage pupils to be creative and to think critically. We recognise that children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop their own strategies for doing things. We discourage the use of templates, worksheets and colouring sheets and instead set up creative ways for pupils to share their own views and ideas .Instead of pushing for children to produce 'perfect' work led by teachers, we encourage pupils to create their own drawings and pieces of writing, as well as cut and stick their own work. This is a crucial way of encouraging students to use their imaginations and for teachers to truly see that child's unique views and thoughts. It also demonstrates that we value their efforts and celebrate their differences. We always take the time to ask a child, "What's his/her drawing? and 'Why he/she has chosen to draw this?'.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As in all schools the lead up to the Christmas Holiday at the end of Term 1 always seems even busier than normal!

This week Year 11 were transformed into Sixth Formers as they attended their Taster Day as part of the Information and Guidance [IAG] transition to help with decisions to be made about their next step beyond IGCSE examinations. Tenby Sixth Form has plenty to offer in terms of outstanding results and an excellent Pastoral Structure and IAG. A fantastic day was had and a big thanks to our committed teachers for delivering additional lessons for our students to experience. I am sure it will help in the tough decision-making process!

Year 11 Students in Tenby Sixth Form mode in Psychology and History A Level lessons

This week I attended the Student Leadership Council meeting on Wednesday afternoon and to say I was very impressed with how our young people are conducting themselves would be an understatement! We are building the values and skills of responsibility,

effective communication, confidence and so much more through the opportunity to get involved in this fabulous whole school council. The students are shining through with their public speaking and delivery of new creative initiatives they are introducing to continue on our journey to excellence.

Thank you to those parents who attended our first Parents Evening of the academic year, just a reminder that Year 7, 9 and 11 Parents can make bookings on the Engage Parent Portal for Wednesday 29 November – we will see you then.

Finally, I mentioned last time about our students who are receiving Outstanding Cambridge Awards for their IGCSE or AS/A Level results. They attend the ceremony in Kuala Lumpur on Monday and we wish them a fantastic time on behalf of Tenby Schools, Penang community and reiterate how proud we are of them for their success.

With so much going on even in the past week please read on to find out what has been happening in each year group in more depth from our Key Stage Coordinators, and as always do visit our Tenby Penang Facebook page for daily updates of what goes on!

Thank you for your continued support.

KS3 News – By: Mr Rob

Thank you to Mr Adrian and members of 8T for presenting this week’s assembly on the theme of World Peace. They shared their research on important topics such as Racism, Gender Equality, Slavery, War and Violence. A special mention to Isa, Jennifer and Sasha for their ‘outstanding’ contributions.

The Ukuleles have arrived! Recently, Tenby decided to invest in 15 brand new ukuleles. These bright new additions to the music department have already seen plenty of use. Watch out for the ukulele CCA next term!

Thank you to all the KS3 students who served a role in organising stalls for the Halloween Party on Friday 17th November. The whole event was a tremendous success, and as usual provided the ideal opportunity for students, parents and staff to get together.

Year 11’s - Sixth Form taster day 23rd November

On Thursday 23rd the year 11’s had a great day experiencing what it would be like to be part of the sixth form, they found out about the course requirements and had a taster of A’ level lesson content. This is part of series of activities aimed at equipping or Year 11’s with the information and knowledge they need to make informed choices about their future.

Photographs below from taster sessions in Mandarin, Physics, Psychology and Chemistry.

Year 11 Mock Exams Mock exams will start on Wednesday 3 January. Students should be having some relaxation time over the Christmas break but it is also very important that they are doing some revision in preparation for mocks. The mock results are important as these will be used to predict grades and identify areas of support. The predicted grades will also be used in decisions on whether to offer a place or not in the 6th Form. Mock Exam timetables will be shared with students before the end of next week, and will go onto the parent portal.

Boys Volleyball Friendly Match with Chung Ling High School On the 21st October, a team of 9 members led by Mr Rob represented Tenby Schools Penang’s first ever Boys’ Volleyball Team to play against Chung Ling High School, organized by Ms Aini. Despite being the Tigers’ first match against a highly experienced team, they stood up tall and fought with their best efforts. Three games were played from 4:20 till 5:30, they were all well fought matches between both schools but Tenby has fallen to a 3-0 defeat. Regardless of the bitter result, Tenby’s Volleyball Team has shown potential and resilience to come back stronger after every match lost. Tenby had a 6 point deficit on the first game (19-25) but they did not give up, they came back stronger than before and closing the gap between both schools to a 5 point deficit on the second game (20-25) and a 2 point deficit on the last (23-25). Great job tigers! We will come back stronger than ever for any future matches. – By Khoo Teng Wei

Swimming competition at Uplands (21 October- Tuesday)

Tenby U15 Girl’s Football Match vs. Pelita On the 2nd of November the Tenby football girls headed onto the field with much anticipation and enthusiasm for the first football match of the season. There was an air of tentativeness due to our limited training sessions and very little history of playing as a team. We all still headed onto the pitch calmly with a slick warm up carried out. The opposition had arrived whilst we were huddled in the midst of discussing team tactics and different plays. A final pep talk and a shake of the Pelita’s girl’s hands later, we were off. Goals were scored within the first few minutes of the whistle having been blown. Our team had already grown in competitiveness but so had the opposition. A few solo runs notched the score up. Their defence became fiercer, however so did we, as a team, as one. We worked together, passing the ball frequently in confident style of play. As time went on, so did the number of goals we scored. Our defenders managed to always steal the ball off of the other team, getting to attack and finally in the goal. The final score was 12-1 to us, Gurudevi and I having scored. A fantastic game with such a victorious result! Congratulations team. On behalf of the team I’d like to say thank you very much to Mr. Shafiq for arranging the game, enabling us to demonstrate our skills. We are looking forward to many more matches to come! The players were: Valerie, Carmen, Miho, Gurudevi, Jillian, Ee Lin, Joelle and myself. - By Antonia C. P. Martin

U14 A NETBALL MATCH 15th November 2017

Last Wednesday, Tenby Tigers came back stronger than ever after a number of tournaments and matches played previously. It was a friendly match against POWIIS U14 A team. By 4:15pm the match had begun and we started off with confidence. Within the first quarter, our shooters Jia Hui (GA) and Ella (GS) managed to score 11 goals. It was rather impressive since our opponent only managed to score a total number of 1 goal. When POWIIS got the ball to their attackers, our defenders (Yun Whey, as GK, and myself as GD) blocked and did a great job at marking their opponents and getting most of the rebounds. Tenby Tigers managed to balance their defensive and attacking skills whilst playing and their passes to each other have improved a lot over these past few weeks. We played with determination and focus to gain possession of the ball, which lead our second quarter to a final score of 16-1. Gurudevi (WA), Antonia (C) and Jean (WD) worked together to progress the ball up to the court into the ‘D’ using a number of different passes. Our passing and movement around the court was impressive and every team member played their part. Final score was 22-3. Well done Tigers! - By Carmen Lim (U14 A Vice Captain)

U14 ’B’ NETBALL MATCH 15th November 2017 @ Tenby Sports Hall Basketball Tournament (Saturday- 11 November) Football (Thursday - 2nd November)

Tigers showed Massive Determination Emerging as Runners Up. The U15 Basketball Tournament was one the seasons highlight for this term. Tenby was host for this event, hitting a record of the most numbers of teams for this time. Tenby emerged as Runners Up after going against the mighty Dalat. Tenby tigers portrayed determination and grit as they played their hearts out to secure second place.

Well done Tenby !

Last Wednesday, there was a friendly match against POWIIS U14 B team. The match started around 4:45pm and on the first quarter we managed to score 3 goals while POWIIS scored 2. The score was close and there was nervousness in the air how the second quarter would go. However, on the second quarter our team scored 6 goals and our opponent 5. Our GK and GD tried their best marking POWIIS´ GA and GS but they still managed to score 3 goals. We all wanted to succeed and win, since the score was close and we tried our absolute best to reach that goal. The final quarter finally came and POWIIS didn´t manage to score anymore goals and our GS and GA did a great job of scoring 3 more goals. So, the final score was 9-5! Great job Tigers!
