Carpal tunnel syndromeThe wrist constitutes small bones called carpals and there is a tunnel through which tendons and nerves pass and these control movement and sensation in the hand. The main nerve can become compressed within this tunnel and causes symptoms.

These symptoms include pins and needles, numbness and/or pain in the index and middle fingers, or palm and may progress to muscle weakness if the nerve continues to be irritated. Symptoms are often worse at night.

About 1 in 1,000 people develop this syndrome each year. Most cases occur in people between 40 -50 years old, but it can occur at any age. Women are affected 2-3 times more often than men. It is also common during pregnancy.

There are a variety of causes for this condition and it is important tto seek professional assistance as treatments can relieve symptoms. At the Somerset Health Practice our approach is to combine healthcare techniques from a range of disciplines including acupuncture, herbal medicine, osteopathy, exercise and lifestyle advice, which will vary with individual patient needs. We specialise in the care of musculo-skeletal problems for women, men and children of any age, pain relief, physical rehabilitation and the restoration of function.

Thousands of homes in the South West are benefiting from the clean green energy of solar power, and now the same technology is being used to improve the health of rural communities in one of Africa’s poorest nations.

A team of volunteers from the South West’s leading renewable energy specialists has just returned from 2 weeks spent installing solar-powered fridges for storing vaccines at remote health posts in a rural area of Ethiopia.

Recognising the desperate need for properly refrigerated vaccines in the heat, the company raised money through donations and fund-raising activities for its charity partner For-Ethiopia, which works to relieve poverty and sickness in the East African country.

Staff from Solarsense travelled to a rural area west of the capital Addis Ababa at the end of March. They installed solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roofs of three health posts to generate electricity, fitted the vaccine fridges and trained key local people in how to operate and maintain the fridges.

The team of three also revisited another health post, Beso, where Solarsense staff installed solar PV

and a vaccine fridge last year. Each of these posts serves at least 2,000 people, as well as supplying properly refrigerated vaccines to other nearby health posts.

The electric fridges safely store vaccines used to immunise children against potentially fatal diseases such as tuberculosis, polio, tetanus and diphtheria.

When the temperature of these vaccines reaches 8 degrees C, the potency is destroyed and they have to be discarded. Before the solar-powered fridge was installed at Beso, one in three vaccines had to be discarded but now the wastage rate is down to zero.

Stephen Barrett of Solarsense said: “We have installed solar energy systems on thousands of homes and business premises across the South West, and are glad to be able to use our expertise in helping communities in other parts of the world.”

The Solarsense charity team offer workshops and presentations for school or other community groups on solar power and its impacts in the developing world.

the tin bridge - Muriel V. MudieHow many drivers and bus passengers look at the sign leading to one of Glastonbury's roundabouts, and wonder about its name: Tin Bridge Roundabout?

Quite a number, by now, as the railway line it crossed was closed in the 1960s. Though lengths of the railway embankment are still visible alongside the present Wells road, and a replica level crossing gate identifies where trains entered Glastonbury and Street station.

A little farther along, towards Wells, the line from Burnham to Evercreech, and onwards via Templecombe to London, met with a tiny branch to Wells via Polsham. Six passengers a time on the latter train was about average by the 1960s. Near that point a steeply humped bridge spanned the railway, carrying the road across. The terrain being dead flat, part of the Levels, the only alternative to a level crossing was a road bridge.

Its approach was unusually steep to make enough height to clear a steam engine and carriages. Children on buses gleefully anticipated the upward climb and downward plunge with loud “Ooh”s and other noises.

Tin Bridge was essential but not exactly pretty. Once seems to recall that its walls on either side were simply made of corrugated iron or similar metals. The public in general took these metal sheets to be relations of the tin can. Hence the nickname that became an official name on modern traffic signs.

Macular Degeneration By Adrian Springett of Eyetech’s Street branch

100 High St, Street. BA16 0EW

Suppliers of NUTROFEye protection in a tablet

In the western world, Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of registered blindness in the over 50 age group. The retina is a light sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye which receives the image perceived by our brain. The macula is a small area at the centre of the retina with densely packed light receptors. This allows high resolution of detail. The macula is our fixation point and the eye rotates to point the macula at whatever we want to see.

AMD is a consequence of us all living longer and is the leading cause of registered blindness in the over 50 age group The degenerative changes that occur in the central retinal area cause a reduction in clarity of vision which affects daily tasks such as reading, driving, recognising faces and working with fine detail. The degree of visual impairment can be quite varied but does not lead to total blindness. The peripheral retina and vision remains unaffected. One of the main risk factors for developing AMD is smoking. Studies show you may be 6x more likely to develop AMD if you smoke!

Broadly speaking, there are two types of macular degeneration or AMD which are classified as 'wet' or 'dry'..

Dry AMD is the most common form of the condition. It develops very slowly causing gradual loss of central vision.. There is no medical treatment for this type

although there are various nutritional supplements on the market which have been shown to protect the macula area against the degenerative changes. NUTROF is a new multi vitamin which has shown promising results in studies. Some consultants are actively recommending this product since it contains all the essential vitamins and omega 3 oils. It also has the most effective concentrations of the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin. Nutrof is also beneficial in stopping dry AMD from changing into the more aggressive wet AMD.

Wet AMD results in a build-up of fluid under the retina. This causes bleeding and scarring which leads to more rapid sight loss. Initially an individual may notice distortion of their central vision. Early diagnosis of this is very important since in some cases this type of AMD responds to drug treatment with injections. If ignored the vision rapidly worsens and the treatment is less or totally ineffective. The wet form accounts for only a few percent of all people affected with AMD.

Optical aids such as magnifiers or reading spectacles with extra magnification can be helpful with reading and other small detailed tasks. The intense brightness of “Daylight lamps” in combination with these optical aids can be of great benefit. These lamps emit a wavelength of light that most stimulates the retinal cells.

new Session & venue

It has been an Incredible Edible start of the year for Somerset Community Food. This spring the group launched the Incredible Edible Somerset website, a new interactive online forum for community food growing in Somerset.

The site makes it easer for people to connect with each other and learn about what is happening locally with a comprehensive events calendar and blogs posted by people across Somerset. People can sign up and list skills they are offering and seeking and individuals can organise into groups and more.

Complimenting the development of the site, Somerset Community Food have also been organising information evenings for people looking for land. Going district by district these events have been a growing success. Over 150 people have been in attendance so far in Mendip, Sedgemoor and South Somerset.

This summer even more Incredible Edible activities will be taking place. On Saturday 14th July will be the Incredible Edible Somerset Summer Conference, a whole day of workshops, talks and skill sharing. Mary Clear from Incredible Edible Todmorden in Yorkshire will be one of the main speakers, sharing her

community’s story of how they transformed their town into vegetable heaven.

The Incredible Somerset Open Gardens Scheme will also be taking place on the 11th & 12th August as part of National Allotments Week. There will be workshops, activities and edible spaces everywhere open to the public to inspire all of us to get growing. Find out more at: http://incredible-edible-somerset.ning.com

Going on holiday? Amend or make a Will before you goBy David and Jill Sinclair of Acorn Solicitors

If you're about to go on holiday, it might be a good time to amend a Will or make one for the first time before you go.

Your Will is one of the most important documents you will ever sign, so don't delay.

It is also a good idea to constantly review and amend your Will through all the stages of life, for instance when you have another child or grandchild.

A large number of people put off making a Will or never make one, which can prove a very costly and time-consuming mistake for the people left behind.

The common perception is that Solicitors are expensive but at Acorn we do the majority of Wills on fixed fees.

We also offer free storage of your Will and free Will Reviews.

Acorn Solicitors is a small family firm of Solicitors based in Street and Taunton and specialise in Wills Probate and Property Law.

As we are on the High Street, we are easy to pop in to chat to our friendly legal experts. You can also find us on Facebook and Twitter.

We also offer a range of other legal services. For more information visit our website www.acornsolicitors.com or call 01458 441507.

*David Sinclair is a National Director of Solicitors for the Elderly. In the last three years, he and his mother Jill have given more than £10,000 to charities through writing Wills for free in November through Will Aid - one of the highest totals in the South West.

The society is very keen to welcome new members; membership is £7 per year. Interested in joining the society and the walk? Call on 01458 443055 or apply using the forms on the web site. Information about what the society does can be found at www.streetsociety.org.

Looking for ideas for the summer holidays?

Strode College in Street has 60 free places available on the government funded `National Citizenship Service` which runs for four weeks during the summer holidays. The scheme offers some great opportunities to local young people to make new friends, learn new skills, and make a difference to the local community.

If you would like more information about the scheme please call the college direct.

Somerset Youth Theatre had an amazing show at The STalls, Tilham

Farm Baltonsborough. The children performed Ernie and his Incredible Illucinations by Alan Ayckbourn. There was a full audience and the children pulled off a wonderful performance. With ages of 5 to 14, the older ones held the show and the younger ones provided some really fun moments!

Somerset Youth Theatre is

holding two after school clubs - Tuesdays at St Dunstan's School 3.15 to 4.4.5 and Thursdays at Butleigh School - 3.15 to 4.30. The clubs are open to all who would like to attend. The cost is £6 St Dunstans and £5 Butleigh, but the Group does give concessions, so get in touch.

They are putting on two performances at the end of this term, Bug Bonanza at Butleigh and a play for Teenagers at St Dunstan's. Contact Emmaline Maxwell at: [email protected].

We are very pleased to have been “Highly Commended” for our design work on the alterations to Glastonbury Town Hall.We wish to share our success with our Customers and offer a discount of 25% to the next 4 planning designs to be ordered!

We offer a complete design service from extensions and house conversions to specailist disabled access for public buldings and commercial premises..

Now that winter is over, our thoughts move to our gardens and fence panels may need replacing or you may wish to replace the posts as well.

To replace a broken panel, cut through the nails which hold it to the post. If you try to use force to get it out, you may cause damage to the post or adjoining panels. When fitting the new panel, drill holes through the side rails and screw the new panel to the post. Do not just nail it in place, you risk splitting the rail and you make it harder to remove the panel in the future.

If you need to replace a post as well, you will need to dig down and try to remove the concrete base which holds it in place. This will often be very hard concrete and you may have to hire a power tool to break it up! The new post should go down some 18" into the ground. Place the post in position and screw the adjoining panels to it - this will insure that the post is vertical and matches up with the panels. Place a wooden strut each side at right angles to the fencing to hold the post firm and vertical in that direction; you can then pour the concrete mix (which should contain some coarse aggregate which makes it stronger) into the hole leaving about 4" of space above for the soil to be replaced. You can buy bags of ready mixed concrete for this job. After a day, you can remove the struts, trim the top of the post to match the others and screw a cap on the top if required.

If you need to replace all of the fencing then you can save yourself a lot of time and effort by moving the posts. Most runs of fencing have a part panel at one end to fill up a space. By putting this infil panel at the other end of the run, you can position the new posts inbetween the old concrete bases and leave them in place.Simply cut of the old posts as low as you can and dig new holes in clean soil. Proceed as before by putting in a post and screwing it to the adjoining post and and side struts. Work your way along the run and then put the concrete in afterwards.

If you are fitting new fencing then you should put a gravel board along the ground to suport the panel off the soil. This is a length of treated timber cut to the same length as the panel to fit between each post. You can attach it using a screw angled down through the top edge into the post. A gravel board can be 5" or 6" wide and it should be let into the ground about 1" to 2". It is designed to stop the soil or gravel pushing against the panel and damaging it. On a sloping garden you should try to obtain an even drop between each panel or perhaps some panels level and then a uniform drop, it looks much nicer than a random set of different heights. Finish of by trimming the post tops about 2" above the heighest adjoining panel, treat the top with preservative and screw a post cap on top.

Crispin Centre MuralThe Street Society, with sponsorship by Realm, have provided The Crispin Centre mural with new interpretation boards. This is to celebrate the refurbishment of the mural by Philippa Threlfall of The Black Dog Pottery in Wells.

It was Philippa and her late husband,Kennedy Collings, who were originally commissioned by C & J Clark to work on this mural for the Crispin Centre in the late 1970s. Philippa made the necessary repairs recently and she said that working on the mural had caused a lot of interest...people who remembered the mural going up and people who were identifying the buildings to each other. "I told them it will be easier in future, now that there is a key provided!"

At the launch, attended by representatives of Street Parish Council, Realm and Street Society committee members, Nina Swift Chairman of the society, thanked Philippa for her work on the mural both past and present and she said that she hoped the mural would go on for at least another 30 years, enhancing the entrance to The Crispin Centre

Somerset Rural Youth Project helps youngsters in the county access employment and training opportunities by providing individual support and advice on a range of issues. It provides activities to combat anti-social behaviour and encourage the participation in the development of communities.

Current projects running by the charity include the popular Moped Loan Scheme, which offers youngsters the chance to have their own transport for a nominal fee – helping them to get to college, or to work. The Stronger Communities Project works with adults and young people to improve relationships in the community and

to reduce anti-social behaviour. Its Participation Project gives

young people the confidence, skills and opportunities to influence and change the services that matter to them, and the charity’s Health and Wellbeing Team are committed to making sure that isolated children and young people in Somerset can access a wide range of health services more often limited to urban areas.

The charity’s REAL Team (Rural Employment and Learning) offers targeted support for young people who are unemployed or not in training. A Green Activities Programme offers young people the opportunity to get involved

in practical, accredited and environmental activities throughout the county, working with a variety of environmental organisations including Natural England, Somerset Wildlife Trust and the National Trust.

The charity is always looking for volunteers and businesses that can help support young people. If you have opportunities for work experience placements or apprenticeships we would love to hear from you.

Contact the charity on 01278 722100, visit its Facebook page or website at www.sryp.org.uk, and interested businesses can email Matt on [email protected].

The Ashcott Beer Festival returns on June 29th,

30th, July 1st for its 14th year,

the 3rd in its new location at Ashcott Playing Fields. Once again we will be raising money for Ashcott Primary School, Cheeky Chimps preschool and after school group, and Ashcott playing fields. The festival has now donated over £50000 in the past 13 years to these causes.

The organisers try to improve the festival year on year, and this year will see the opening of a brand new cider bar in the stripy marquee, offering a great selection of Somerset’s finest export for you to taste. Of course a beer festival needs great ale and we will again be sourcing a range of beers from a variety

of sources, large and small, throughout the country

The event kicks off on Friday June the 29th at 7pm, when there will be having a tasting for the champion ale, and live music to dance the night away to.

On Saturday there will be an afternoon of fun for all the family. The marquee will be transformed into an underwater scene with various themed activities for children. A bouncy castle has been booked for the afternoon along with other attractions. We also will be running a barbeque, and of course continuing to offer a great selection of drink, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. The evening will see 2 great local bands play live.

On Sunday the festival opens at 12 for a relaxed afternoon of drinking the remaining beer and cider.

Camping on site is available free, although you will need to pre-book this via the web site www.ashcottbeerfest.org. This will be constantly updated between now and the event, so keep checking for news on bands, beer and all that is bully.

If you are interested in helping, whether it be by sponsorship of a barrel or by working at the festival, we are best contacted through the website www.ashcottbeerfest.org Sponsorship forms are ready to be downloaded from the site, and contact can be made with the committee should you have any inquiries by email at [email protected]

The organisers hope to see old friends and new faces at the end of June for what promises to be a great event.

musings from my Garden - By Martin Mudie

I have always been a great believer in putting off till tomorrow (or even the next day) that which I should do today. So, though I could have sewn my annual seeds in March I have only just made it by May.

If you haven’t tried annuals , they really are wonderful value. A fraction of the cost of bedding plants and , like them, will flower all summer. There is even a bonus as, if you let them set seed, you will have free plants for next year. There are two ways of growing them• In the ground. Take a border and remove any stones, weeds et, then

using a rake make the top of the soil into a fine tilth. If you are sewing a lot of seeds use sand to mark out the boundaries between them. Then sew the seeds either thinly over the area or in straight lines. If you use straight lines then you will have to transplant them when they come up.

• In hanging baskets. I found this method as I had a dead tree in the garden which has a lot of branches onto which I could hang my old hanging baskets. The sewing is the same. If you are feeling flush you can by special compost for seed sewing.

• Now a confession. I am not very good at seeds – I either over or underwater them, but then you can’t be brilliant at everything!Just keep and eye and only water them when the soil seems dry

and if you can use one of those cheap hand held sprayers. For selection any of the big garden centres will oblige –Monkton Elm

near Taunton, Sanders garden world in Burnham or Cadbury near Congresbury. If you sow the seeds now they will flower this year but, unlike me, don’t delay. Happy Gardening

Street Parish Council Members’ Surgeries Two councillors will be available to meet residents to discuss local issues in the John Webster Room, Street Parish Rooms, 6 Leigh Road, Street from 11 am to 12 noon on Saturday 2nd June, 2012.

Everyone living in Walton, Ashcott, Glastonbury or Street should take the opportunity to check out their local recycling site – it could be an eye-opener.

The days of the “tip” are long gone, as Street Recycling Centre is part of a highly-efficient network available seven days a week to take household waste for recycling or disposal, including bulky and hazardous items.

Street Recycling Centre costs nothing to enter, and it is free to deposit domestic rubbish and around 30 materials for recycling.

That includes everything taken in kerbside collections (except food waste), as well as metal, wood, textiles, electrical items, garden waste and much more.

Only four materials not defined as household waste – hardcore, soil, tyres and gas bottles – attract charges, starting at £2.90.

Street Recycling Centre is among sites taking additional materials, from plasterboard and beverage cartons for recycling to books, CDs, videos and DVDs for charity reuse.

The latest new material taken at Street and all other sites is cooking oil, which is now powering the National Grid, with each litre from chip fryers generating enough electricity to make 240 cups of tea.

Diverting as much as possible from costly landfill or clogging up drains, the oil is processed by eco-firm Living Fuels to generate clean, green electricity.

Street is one of seven recycling sites to take asbestos for disposal, so it has seen new guidance – full details, SWP website – to improve the safety of staff and public.

As well as handling it with gloves and mask, and not breaking up large sheets, residents with household asbestos are asked to phone in advance – Street’s number is 01458 840076 – and bring it double wrapped in heavy duty plastic and sealed, such as rubble bags closed with gaffer or duct tape.

To maximise recycling and limit congestion, visitors are advised to pre-sort their materials, and for safety, they are urged to take care with

heavy loads, sharp items or spillages.

The Street site at the end of Farm Lane, not far off the A39 Westway – BA16 9PB for satnavs – is open 40 hours and five days a week: Saturday 8am-4pm, Sunday 8am-1pm, Monday 8am-7pm, and Tuesday-Wednesday 8am-4pm.

When the Street site is closed on Thursday and Friday, alternatives are open 8am-4pm at Dulcote near Wells, Highbridge, Bridgwater, Somerton or elsewhere in the county.

Aside from the weekly schedule, recycling sites are only closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, so the Street site will be open during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Bank Holidays on 4-5 June.

However, the Jubilee will affect kerbside collections. All collections will be made as usual on Bank Holiday Monday 4 June, but collections on Tuesday 5 June and the rest of the week will be one day later, including Friday’s taking place on Saturday 9 June

Street and Glastonbury U3AThe Summer talk on Monday 25th June from 2-4pm "Taking more control of our health" still

has spaces. The talk and discussion will look at ways to maximise how we

can benefit best from our National Health Service, and how we can minimise the effect on our lives if we have any long-term (chronic) condition. This session can also be of value to those of you who are living with someone who needs help to cope.

It is planned to be a lighthearted but worthwhile session and will be held at The Friends Meeting House in Street.

Street Neighbourhood Watch AssociationAs the longer days and better weather arrives residents need to be mindful of keeping their homes safe from opportunist thieves. Remember to close doors and windows when going out or at night.

Also be on the watch for distraction burglaries where you are kept occupied by someone unknown to you at one door whilst an accomplice might go to the back of your home.

With better weather more time may be spent working in the garden so again remember to put tools and equipment away when you have finished and ensure that your garden shed is secure.

The Association attends a number of community events during the year and as part of our stand we run a tombola for which we are always looking for prizes. If you have any suitable items, such as unwanted gifts, please contact either David Atkins on 01458 443055 or Maureen Davis on 01458 442071 to arrange collection or delivery.

For information on Neighbourhood Watch or Community Speedwatch please contact either David Atkins on 01458 443055 or Brian Bastable on 01458 443940.
