Stewardship: Blessed to Serve

Dear friends in Christ, it is our joy to serve as your Stewardship Committee. During this transition year we are celebrating that we are “Blessed to Serve.”

In baptism we become children of God and we are called to be a community growing together in Christ to love and serve all people.

Our 2019 Fall Stewardship Emphasis “Blessed to Serve” gives us an opportunity to reflect on God’s free gift of grace. It also gives us the opportunity to experience the blessing that comes to us as we share our gifts and care for others with grateful hearts, grateful hands, and grateful habits.

We give thanks for the vitality of God’s ministry here at Saint Andrew’s Lutheran Church through the years and we are confident that the good work that God has begun among us will continue in this important transition year.

Look for a stewardship mailing which will be sent out next week and join us for the Adult Forum on November 3, 10 and 17 as we open the scripture to study, discuss, and celebrate the many ways in which we are Blessed to Serve with Grateful Hearts, Hands, and Habits.

Our hope is that each of us will take this time to prayerfully consider how we have been BLESSED TO SERVE and how we would like to use the gifts and abilities that we have received to love God and our neighbor.

Welcome and Worship with Children

There are a variety of resources to welcome children in worship.

These include prayer/offering cards for kids (in the pew racks), “Younger Disciples Tips” in the bulletin on how to engage children in worship, a spot set aside just for kids on the east side of the Sanctuary, and a worship summary form for kids (available in the Narthex). Children may borrow Spark Bibles (in the Narthex) during worship to follow along with the lessons and parts of worship.

Children’s Choir

Calling all students in kindergarten through

middle school! You are invited to join us for Children’s Choir as we prepare to sing as part of worship and the Children’s Christmas Program on Sunday, December 22, at one 9:30 am worship service. This is a great opportunity for you to be a very important part of our worship service that day.

Plan to join us; we need your voice! Rehearsals will be on Sundays, November 24, December 1, December 8, and December 15, from 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm, in 215/Music Room.

Contact Children’s Choir Director Erin Simpson for more information or to let her know of your interest.

Sanctuary Updates

The Worship and Liturgical Arts Committee (WLA) has been and continues to be deeply engaged and committed to updating and refreshing the Sanctuary space.

Over the past 2 years, we’ve partnered with the Building and Property Committee on the installation of a new sound system, new paint and sconces, and the soon to be online HVAC system. Each of these improvements have enhanced the space visually, auditory-wise and with temperature comfort for the congregation and visitors. This has been joyful work and we are excited to continue this journey.

WLA is collaborating with interior design professional Judy Gowdy, who is a member of our committee, to find new furnishings for the Sanctuary which will further enhance the space. As you have probably noticed, the old large pulpit, which got moved in and out of the Sanctuary routinely, was removed for several months as an experiment for us to think about a different type of pulpit that would work better with how we use the space. WLA has a comprehensive plan for finding a style that is modern, appealing and will work flexibly with the space for many of the furnishings, as well as to gradually replace these pieces beginning with the pulpit.

If you would like to learn more, please find me. I would be more than happy to share information about our work.

Communion Bread

Can you help with an easy and important ministry of service by baking communion bread, done together

with your family or individually? For more information and to find the recipe for Luther Bread, go to the Saint Andrew’s website: www.SALC.church/communion-bread. Contact coordinator Jill Nichols-Hicks for more information.

Altar Guild

Are you an individual, couple or family seeking a way to serve at Saint Andrew’s? Behind the scenes,

Altar Guild members prepare the elements and set the altar for communion every Sunday. We also decorate the Sanctuary Christmas tree and the Easter cross. Best of all, we meet only 3 times a year and one of those is a luncheon.

Just as we welcome guests in our homes, here we share our gift of hospitality with members and visitors coming to be fed at the table of our Lord. Find out more by shadowing current Altar Guild members for a Sunday service.

If you have questions about serving on Altar Guild, or to arrange a date to shadow, please contact Altar Guild chair Linda Powell.

Pastoral Transition

Call Committee

Using the Ministry Site Profile (MSP), the Call Committee works with the ELCA Northwest Washington Synod to identify candidates to be our next Pastor, conducts interviews, and recommends a candidate to the congregation for

approval.Process update:• September - October: In early September, Call Committee received a list of 5 candidates from the Bishop. Since

then, the Call Committee completed 2 rounds of interviews and is preparing for a third round with a smaller number of candidates. The process will continue until the Call Committee discerns one candidate for recommendation to the Congregation.

• During August: The Bishop used the Ministry Site Profile to prayerfully identify candidates with the abilities and qualities the congregation desires.

• July: The Call Committee submitted the completed MSP to the Bishop of the NW Synod, who authorized its publication on the ELCA website. Pastoral candidates who submit their personal profiles to the Synod and formally indicate interest in the position are able to access the full MSP. The summary of the posting may be seen by anyone at www.elca.org/Call-Process/Current-Openings.

• May – July: After election by the congregation, Call Committee worked on remaining sections of the MSP (initial sections were prepared by the Transition Team) including gathering written responses and sharing conversations with many congregation members to identify desired pastoral qualities and abilities.

Thanks to congregation members who have engaged with Call Committee in this process. Please continue to share your ideas and questions with the committee members or with Pastor Red Burchfield. Please continue to pray for Call Committee members (Marc Bateman, Bill Brueggemann [chair], Dianne Chong, Mary Davis, Stephanie Page-Lester, and Linda Powell), Bishop Shelley Bryan Wee, and candidates that each will be prayerful and led by the Holy Spirit in this process.

“To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” 1 Corinthians 12:7

We are in the process of a pastoral transition. This is a two-step process that began with the formation of a Transition Team (TT) and is continuing with the work of a Call Committee.

Youth Registration Forms

All families need to complete a Youth Registration Form each year. This form gives us the information to help keep children safe while participating in Saint Andrew’s activities. It includes medical information and permissions,

and is used for all activities at Saint Andrew’s for 2019-2020. Complete one form per family. Background check authorizations: For the safety of all, background checks are required for all adults who work with

children. The registration form has space for two adults in the household to authorize Saint Andrew’s to perform a background check. This authorization is optional, but will save time and effort for any adult who may want to volunteer with youth this year.

The registration form can be found in the Narthex near the church office and in classrooms. Return completed forms to the church office.

The form is also ONLINE as an interactive PDF form; it can be found at SALC.church/youth-registration. • Open the form and SAVE it to your computer.• Open the saved form, complete the information, and SAVE it again.

ο Please note: If you have a saved registration form with “revised August 2014” (or more recent date) at the bottom, you can submit that form. Open it and update the school year and “Today’s Date”, make any other necessary changes, and save. If you submit a previous year’s form and wish to volunteer for youth activities, you will need to complete a separate background check authorization form. Contact the church office to get the form.

• Either email the form to [email protected] or print and return the form to Saint Andrew’s.

The Reformation was a movement in the 16th century that was a cultural, intellectual, economic, political, and religious upheaval that changed Europe, established what has become known as the protestant church movement,

and has had a lasting impact on both church and society. We will take a big picture overview of reformation history and ask what the implications of this movement are for our life today.

November 17 Stewardship Servant Fair: Blessed to ServePresenter: Stewardship Committee and Fellowship Group

This forum will celebrate how we are “Blessed to Serve.” We will celebrate making our stewardship

commitments for 2020 with great small bites, a coffee bar, and conversation around the many opportunities in which we can share God’s love and serve God and neighbor through the congregation and within the larger community so that we are a community growing together in Christ to love and serve all people.

November 24 Who are our Neighbors: A Biblical ConversationPresenter: Pastor Red Burchfield

When we look around our neighborhood today we realize that some things have changed. Who are

the people that live on your street and where are they from? How many languages are spoken in our local schools and what does that tell us about our neighbors?

Biblically speaking; who are our neighbors? In this interactive Bible study we will review what the Bible says to us about having and being neighbors. How does the Bible talk about having and being neighbors? What does neighbor love look like?

November 3 CFH Congregational ForumFacilitator: Congregation Council Vice President Carolynn Ferris

As we gather to celebrate the Sunday of All Saints remembering those whose lives pointed to God and

who shaped us in faith we will also engage in an organized discussion of our Congregation Council’s decision to accept the Congregations for the Homeless (CFH) request to host the CFH Men’s Rotating Overnight Shelter for the Month of March 2020 (see page 16). This is an important opportunity for us to discuss how we can effectively and successfully host these men to the glory of God as we live out our mission to be a community growing together in Christ to love and serve all people.

November 10 Blessed to Serve: An Interactive Bible StudyFacilitators: Pastor Red Burchfield

In First John 4:19 we read; “We love because God first loved us.” In this forum we will review the Bible’s

gift of God’s love and the biblical call to care for our neighbor. What does loving God and neighbor look like today? What are the gifts and resources that we have been given and how do we want to use them to the glory of God so that we are a community growing together in Christ to love and serve all people?

. . . . on The Dining Tableby Lowell Arneson

It is interesting that one of the most effective tools for creating connections between people is an inanimate object: a table. We long for connections with others, and the tables at which we eat and drink together serve as facilitators of

those connections. A table is often a story in itself. Do you remember the table where you sat each morning to eat your cereal before

heading off to school? How about you and your spouse’s first table where you ate, and sat and talked . . .and talked? My wife and I purchased a new dining room set about 40 years ago, which included a beautiful inlaid burl table. That table has seen serious use over the years, and I sit here at that table as I write these lines. This is a table with dozens of stories to tell and memories to recall. I am sure you have similar tables in your life.

Memories of times spent around the dining table with family and friends are usually rich and meaningful. Grandpa, who always sat at the head of the table, is gone now, but looking at where he always sat still brings back mental pictures of him that provide much enjoyment. In a sense, the memories are stored in the table.

Gatherings for Christmas, Easter, birthdays and anniversaries are special, and the featured event is usually the meal . . . at the table. We are now in the Thanksgiving season. I have thought and said many times that I am always moved by the idea that a whole nation would dedicate one whole day to the primary purpose of giving thanks. Think about that!

The centerpiece of the Thanksgiving celebration is, of course, the meal and conversation around the table. We gather, with grateful hearts for each other, and for our many other blessings. We remember the Pilgrims’ first Thanksgiving, followed by many other Thanksgiving Days. Then in the depth of the Civil War, President Lincoln called for, and established, “Thanksgiving Day” as a national holiday for no other purpose than giving thanks to God. And, so it has been every November since.

There are perhaps two words that sum up what the Christian life is all about: Forgiveness and Thanksgiving! To forgive and to be forgiven is one of life’s greatest gifts. Both leave us with unending reason to be thankful. And, so we are!

When we think of religious art, we quickly recall Jesus at “The Last Supper.” The painting shows Jesus with His disciples at this large table. Wouldn’t it have been something to sit at that table? But wait! We are invited to join that table as we receive the bread and wine at holy communion. That is more to be thankful for.

Enjoy the Macy’s Parade, the football games, and thoughts of Black Friday shopping, but leave lots of room in your day for being thankful and enjoying your time at the table!

Reflections. . . .

Fellowship

Guest Speaker at W.E.B.S. (Women’s Evening Book Study)

Wednesdays, through November 13 7:00 pm, 322/Conference Room Facilitator: Cheryl Jurrus

Our theme for this year (Fall, Winter, Spring) is “The Common Good” and we will focus on what makes

us care about others and what is good for society as a whole instead of focusing only on our own profit and well-being. Our book selection for the Fall session is Michelle Obama’s memoir Becoming.

Join W.E.B.S. on Wednesday evening, November 13, to hear Pastor Mary-Alyce Burleigh share with us

some ideas and ongoing activities related to the common good on the Eastside and especially Kirkland. Pastor Mary-Alyce is an Associate Pastor at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church in Kirkland and active with an interfaith group including Muslims, Jews, and Latter Day Saints. She is also involved with a plan to build tiny homes for affordable housing in Kirkland. We will start to gather at 6:45 pm and begin promptly at 7:00 pm. We plan to end at 8:30 pm, but you are welcome to stay longer to visit and discuss.

Pastor Mary-Alyce did her pastoral internship here at Saint Andrew’s a few years ago and she is looking forward to seeing us again.

Our selection for Winter is The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World by Melinda Gates. Winter sessions begin in January 2020.

All women are welcome to join us for discussion, devotions, prayer, sharing, and lots of laughter. Contact Cheryl Jurrus for information.

Dinners for Eight

Food, fun and conversation! Get to know the Saint Andrew’s Lutheran Church community better. The

first two Dinners for Eight were fun and yummy and we’re all ready for a second helping.

Join people over a casual dinner for food and fellowship. Open to families, couples, singles....everyone!

And to dispel some folks’ worries, you don’t have to host to participate! These can be no-host gatherings at a restaurant or you can use the Fellowship Hall as your home base. (Use of the Fellowship Hall needs to be arranged in advance. Contact Mary Mills or Sherry Grindeland.)

Whoever is the host for the month will decide the location and possibly assign a potluck dish to bring. You come ready for fun and conversation. The next round of dinners will be held Sunday evening, October 27.

Sign up on the Narthex bulletin board or contact Fellowship Coordinator Sherry Grindeland.

Welcome New Members!

We will be receiving new members to Saint Andrew’s during worship on Reformation Sunday,

Trendings and other Email from Saint Andrew’s

Since we moved our web domain name to SALC.church, many people have not been receiving Trendings, the

VOICE, or other group emails from Saint Andrew’s. Because the .church is a new kind of domain, many email providers tend to classify it automatically as spam. You need to “teach” your email that group mailings from SALC.church are not spam.

• Open your email on your provider’s website, not your phone or desktop. For instance: mail.google.com for Gmail, www.comcast.net for Comcast, mail.yahoo.com for Yahoo. Look for a Spam or Junk folder. Mark messages from Saint Andrew’s as “Not Spam” or “Not Junk”. This Spam/Junk folder traps messages before they ever get to your phone/desktop. Over time, your provider will learn that emails from Saint Andrew’s are not spam.

• Open your email on your phone or desktop. Look for a Spam or Junk folder. Mark messages from Saint Andrew’s as “Not Spam” or “Not Junk”. There might also be a choice to “Always Trust messages from SALC.church”. Over time, your phone/desktop email program will learn that emails from Saint Andrew’s are not spam

• Trendings and other emails sent from Saint Andrew’s are always posted on our website when they are sent. Visit the homepage, www.SALC.church, and scroll down to “New Media” for the most recent postings. Trendings will be there on Wednesday (late) afternoons. You can also visit the “Media” webpage: www.SALC.church/media.

Health and WholenessPhysical TherapyBy Stella Nieman, R.N., Faith Community Nurse

“I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you.” 3 John:2 (NIV)

October is designated as Physical Therapy Awareness Month. I have personally received physical therapy several times. Each time I have benefited with strength and healing so I had painfree movement. I continue with some of

the exercises and stretching I learned years ago. I have also had hand therapy two different times. The first was for arthritis in my hands and the second time was for recovery after breaking a bone in my hand. My quality of life was improved each time. The following information is shared by Faith Community Nursing/Health Ministries Northwest, with text from ChoosePT by American Physical Therapist Association:Benefits of Physical Therapy

Physical therapists (PTs) are movement experts who optimize quality of life through prescribed exercise, hands-on care, and patient education.

PTs, and the licensed physical therapist assistants (PTAs) they may team with, provide care across the lifespan to anyone of any ability. Here are some of the benefits of physical therapy:Maximize Your Movement

PTs can identify, diagnose, and treat movement problems. Pain-free movement is crucial to your quality of life, your ability to earn a living, and your independence.Personalized Care That Meets Your Needs

PTs design treatment plans for each person’s individual needs, challenges, and goals. PTs and PTAs help people improve mobility, manage pain and other chronic conditions, recover from injury, and prevent future injury and chronic disease.Care Where You Need It

PTs and PTAs provide care almost anywhere, including hospitals, private practices, outpatient clinics, homes, schools, sports and fitness facilities, work settings, and nursing homes.Participate In Your Recovery

PTs and PTAs empower people to be active participants in their own care. As needed, they also work collaboratively with other health professionals to ensure patients receive the best care.Avoid Opioids

In some situations, dosed appropriately, prescription opioids are an appropriate part of medical treatment. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is urging health care providers to reduce the use of opioids in favor of safe alternatives like physical therapy for most long-term pain. Opioid risks include depression, overdose, and addiction, plus withdrawal symptoms when stopping use.Avoid Surgery

Before you undergo expensive or invasive surgery, try physical therapy. For some conditions, including meniscal tears and knee osteoarthritis, rotator cuff tears, spinal stenosis, and degenerative disk disease, treatment by a PT has been found to be as effective as surgery.Find a Physical Therapist

Although direct access laws vary by state and insurance plans differ, you may not need a physician’s referral to make an appointment with a physical therapist for an evaluation. Check with your health insurance provider to see if you need a physician referral before starting therapy.

Flu Shots

Thank you to the Seattle Visiting Nurse Association for coming to Saint Andrew’s on October 13 to

Health and WholenessCongregational Care Team

Would you like to:

• Be part of a team reaching out to those who are shut-in and homebound?

• Receive solid biblical and practical training as part of a visitation ministry team?

• Be trained to serve as a Lay Eucharistic Minister and share Holy Communion with those who cannot come to church?

In the spirit of hospitality and care and to make sure that we are reaching out to all those who are not able to come to worship on a regular basis, the Health and Wholeness Ministry Committee is organizing a new ministry: the Congregational Care Team.

Training can be provided for those who were unable to attend the training sessions. To indicate your interest to serve on this Team, complete a form found in the Narthex and return it to the box provided, or sign up online at www.salc.church/congregational-care-team.

Faith Community Nurse = Parish Nurse

The “Parish Nurse” role reclaims the historic roots of health and healing found in many religious traditions. These nurses live out the early work of monks, nuns, deacons and deaconesses, church nurses, traditional healers and the

nursing profession itself. The Reverend Granger Westberg conceptualized the contemporary practice of parish nursing as a result of his work with Wholistic Health Centers in the 1970’s. Many parish nursing organizations were formed. Our Saint Andrew’s Parish Nurses became part of Northwest Parish Nurse Ministries (NPNM).

In early 2015, NPNM became Faith Community Nursing | Health Ministries Northwest (FCN | HMN) to reflect that “parish” nursing is a role in all faith traditions. You will note that our “Parish Nurses” are now called “Faith Community Nurses.” The name is new, but the ministry is the same: to combine both nursing and spiritual commitment in a healing ministry within a faith community.

Items for Personal Care Kits

Health and Wholeness Ministry assembles and ships Personal Care Kits to Lutheran World Relief (LWR)

twice a year. LWR distributes the Kits around the world to people in situations where basic items of personal hygiene are needed. Donations are welcome at all times. Items donated by Sunday, October 27 (Reformation Sunday) will be included in the Fall shipment in early November. Items needed are:

• toothbrushes (adult size, in original packaging; can be multi-packs)

• bath towels (20”x40” to 52”x37”, light weight, DARK color)

• bath soap (4 or 5 ounce bars)• nail clippers (metal, large or small size, attached file

optional)• combs (large, sturdy (no picks)Most needed items are towels, soap, and toothbrushes.

Please place items in the basket in the Narthex labeled Health and Wholeness.

At the October Council Meeting....

At the beginning of each Council meeting, Pastor Red Burchfield leads a time of faith sharing and prayer.Pastor Red Burchfield shared updates about ministry goals and priorities. In addition to his ministry here, he is

working with the Synod to revise the Congregation Handbook for Pastoral Transitions. Finance: As of the end of September 2019, year-to-date expenses had exceeded income by approximately $53,000. This

is approximately $20,000 worse than what was budgeted for this time of year. The Committee is concerned. Budget planning for 2020 has begun.

Discipleship Ministries: A job description for the position of Director of Discipleship Ministries (Children, Youth, and Family) was presented to the Council. It will be discussed in November.

Initiatives: All initiatives -- Vision, Engagement, and Building -- are working to inform and collaborate with committees, groups, and the congregation to progress toward their 2019 goals.

Personnel Policies: Proposed changes to the Non-Rostered Staff Personnel policies were discussed and approved by the Council.

Congregations for the Homeless (CFH) Request: The Council voted to approve the CFH request to become a host congregation for its rotating shelter program for the month of March 2020.

Nominating Committee: The Nominating Committee has begun its work to seek eight candidates to run for election to four Council positions.

Call Process: The Call Committee has been interviewing candidates.Packets containing reports from all committees are available to review in the church office anytime during office hours.

Minutes from Council meetings are in the office and online at www.SALC.church/congregation-council-page.

Synod is Seeking a New Treasurer

The Northwest Washington Synod is very grateful for the dedication and expertise of current Synod

Treasurer, Dale Zehms. Dale’s term concludes May 2020, and he has asked that we seek out a replacement sooner so that they can begin working alongside Dale, ensuring a smooth transition. The Synod is seeking qualified nominees for the position.

This volunteer position is accountable for the management of monies and all financial accounts of this synod, including being responsible for the oversight of the proper recording of all financial transactions, oversight of all investments of synod assets, and ensuring synod requirements are supported in accordance with Synod policy and procedure. As an officer of this synod, the treasurer is a member of the synod’s Executive Committee.

The Treasurer must be a lay or rostered voting member of a congregation of this synod. They need knowledge of internal control practices and generally accepted accounting principles and financial reporting requirements. A CPA is desirable. Familiarity with budget development and budget variance monitoring is important.

The treasurer is appointed by the Synod Council for a term of 4 years. The deadline to make a nomination is November 15, 2019. More information and a nomination form can be found at www.lutheransnw.org. Send completed nominations to Synod Vice Presidente Kay Edgerton, [email protected].

On November 20, Spirited Generosity features four sessions:

• Historical and theological review of the offering in Judeo/Christian culture

• The Offering as Worship: theological and biblical aspects of the offering as an act of worship, discipleship, and mission

• Best Practices for the Offering: making the offering a meaningful moment when faith communities gather Mission

On November 21, the plenary presenters will respond to questions from the audiences.

Congregations for the HomelessSaint Andrew’s Will Host CFH Shelter in March 2020

Congregations for the Homeless requested that Saint Andrew’s consider hosting their Rotating Shelter Program for the month of March 2020.

After eight weeks of thoughtful discussion, prayerful discernment, and due diligence, the Congregation Council, at their October 14, 2019 meeting, voted to accept the CFH request. In support of the Council’s decision, the Council agrees to prayerfully support the Saint Andrew’s volunteer core team. Council members Carolynn Ferris and Dan Johnson will serve as key contacts and advisers to the Saint Andrew’s liaison and core team volunteers.

On Sunday, November 3, at the Adult Forum at 9:45 am, Carolynn Ferris will present more information and lead a conversation about this decision and ministry. (see page 7.)

A Core Team is in place to oversee and coordinate hosting the program, and more volunteers are always welcome. There are forms in the Narthex and online at salc.church/congregations-for-the-homeless with more information and a place to indicate your commitment. Return the commitment form to the box in the Narthex. Meals in October - Thank You!

Thank you to all who provided meals in October for the men in the CFH Rotating Shelter program. The

men appreciate the hospitality of sharing a hot meal and fellowship with the volunteers.

During October and November, we will be collecting food to go in Emergency Bags for the HopeLink food bank. We will be packing these bags as part of the Advent Fair on Sunday, December 1. When someone comes to the

HopeLink food bank in need of food and for some reason is not able to “shop” at the food bank on that day, they don’t go away empty handed. They get an Emergency Bag.

Hopelink has two kinds of emergency bags that they have available: a “Cook” bag and a “No Cook” bag. We will be packing “Cook” bags. There are nine items that go in each “Cook” Emergency Bag, which we will be collecting during October and November:

• Canned Beans (~15 ounce black, pinto or kidney)• Canned Vegetables (~15 ounce green beans, corn, peas or carrots)• Rice (1 or 2 pound bag of rice – white or brown)• Granola Bars (individually wrapped)• Peanut Butter (~16 ounce plastic jar – no-stir)• Instant Oatmeal packages (plain or flavored)• Canned Soup• Pasta Sauce (~24 ounce can of pasta sauce)• Pasta (16 ounce package of dry pasta)Donations can be placed in the Corner of Blessing in the Narthex. Check the chart (updated weekly) in the Corner of

Blessing, on the Saint Andrew’s website at www.SALC.church/hopelink, the bulletin, and Trendings to see what items are needed most to be able to pack the most bags.

Monetary donations are also welcome, returned to the church or placed in the offering plate. Note “Hopelink” on your donation.

Love Tree / Bridge Disability Ministries

As part of the Christmas “Love Tree” program, here at church, we have been able to provide Christmas gifts

to 21 disabled Bridge Ministry clients. A list of suggestions is provided for each of the 21 people. This year we have a need for 3 or 4 new gift givers to take one of the names and provide the gifts. You will need to wrap the gifts, list what you purchased, include any gift receipts that may be needed, and return it all to the church in a plastic bag that is provided. If you would like to be a participant in this special ministry, please contact Joanne Baker or speak with her at church.

Love Tree

Once again we at Saint Andrew’s have an opportunity to brighten the lives of those

less fortunate. Look for the Love Tree in the Narthex beginning Sunday, November 17. Tags will be on the tree for Imagine Housing children and veterans, and Sophia Way women. Take a tag or two, purchase the gift and return it unwrapped no later than Sunday, December 8.

Questions? Contact Joanne Baker or Carolyn Haralson.

Imagine Housing

Mark your calendars! The 2020 Imagine Gala and Auction will be

Saturday, April 18, 2020, at Meyedenbauer Center.Imagine Housing’s Imagine Gala and Auction brings

together more than 450 community members each spring for an evening of dining, fun company, and competitive giving in support of affordable housing. The event includes both a silent and live auction, raising over $500,000 to support our mission: to develop affordable housing, build welcoming communities, and foster vibrant futures.

You hold the key to help us achieve our Imagine 1000 goal to provide affordable homes for 2,400 individuals on the Eastside by offering 1,000 affordable apartments by 2022. Please plan to join us!

Outreach and Servant MinistriesMission Team: The Navajo Nation

Jean Wahlstrom and Marvin Kananen have twice volunteered at the Navajo Evangelical Lutheran

Mission (www.NELM.org) at Rock Point, Arizona, a project of the ELCA. The Mission School at Rock Point has asked if a team from Saint Andrew’s would come and work for the week of March 14-22, 2020.

We are being invited to help with various projects: some construction, tutoring, feeding, and basically establishing relationship with the elementary children and Navajo community. There will be something for everyone to do. We’ll push your abilities without taxing them. It is a time of fellowship, service, and adventure. All ages are welcome.

Questions? Contact Jean Wahlstrom, or Fellowship Coordinator Sherry Grindeland, [email protected] or 425-746-2529.

Boxtops for Education

We have been collecting Box Top$ for Education to support Navajo Lutheran Mission School in Rock

Point, Arizona (www.nelm.org/school). This is an easy way to help the school secure needed school supplies and equipment. For now, there are several ways to contribute. You can:

• Download the Box Top$ app onto your smartphone or tablet. After initial set-up, use the app and device camera to scan your grocery receipts. Receipts must be scanned within 14 days of purchase.

• Cut out and bring the little Box Top$ coupons found on various food containers to the envelope attached to the bulletin board in the Narthex, labeled BOX TOPS.

• Bring your grocery receipts - within 14 days of purchase - and leave them in the envelope marked BOX TOPS. A member of the Outreach and Servant Ministries Committee will scan the receipts with the digital app.

For questions about Box Top$, contact Dick Szabo.

World Relief

Bihar is a global mission which is engaging us in significant,

multi-year outreach in Northeastern India as part of a sponsored mission through Lutheran World Relief (LWR).

Partnership Bihar is making an incredible impact in the lives of the people living in the 76 villages with whom we’re partnering!

• The goals of this project are agricultural improvements, year-round food security for the family, empowering women in the community, and increasing incomes for families.

• Our involvement is with congregations throughout the United States, including three in Washington (The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Olympia; Trinity Lutheran Church, Freeland; and Saint Andrew’s).

• Saint Andrew’s has a Project Bihar/LWR working group that has defined three major components in our mission: communication, engagement and giving. For more information, contact Marlyn Thorpe.

Remember in prayer this continuing outreach ministry. Contributions

can be made to Saint Andrew’s with “Bihar-LWR” in the memo line.
