SIX months ago, July 1st, 2015, saw a new term, a change in leadership with new aspirations and

renewed commitment as the year’s theme calls for Rotarians to Be a Gift to the World. 76 Presidents took office charged with the pledge to lead and provide the direction for their respective clubs. Guided by the goals they set in Club Central, Club Presidents aim to increase and strengthen their membership while carrying out significant projects supporting the community they serve. Having completed 73 Club Visits, it is amazing to see the enthusiasm and the passion of our Rotarians.

The Club Assemblies, the project visits, meeting with the Interactors and Rotaractors and above all the fellowship – memories to treasure. Every Club Visit has a story which could fill wonderful chapters in a Governor’s diary, and it certainly did in mine. A story only to be appreciated by the warmth and kind hospitality of the Rotarians.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2016

ENJOY EVERY MOMENT BEING A ROTARIAN.

Every Club has its own culture and tradition, unique to its own. Be it a small club or a large club, every club has its strength as well as its weakness. The Club Visits allowed for an open discussion identifying the clubs’ challenges and focusing on strengthening them. While these challenges from membership to weekly meeting attendance, project participation to fellowship, and TRF giving are not new, it takes collective effort of every member of the Club to overcome the chal-lenges to improve the effectiveness of the Club. Some changes may be inevitable for the club to continue to remain strong and vibrant. We still have a majority of our Clubs with membership of below 20. It is only when a Club is strong can we carry out our 5 Avenues of Service – Club, Vocational, Community, International and Youth Services more effectively and with greater impact.

One could not have asked for more to end the first half of the Ro-tary year, but to be graced by a visit from RI President himself. President Ravi’s visit on December 5, 2015, made history. Within a one-day packed program, he availed himself to our District spending time with our Youth, our Past-District Governors, our future Club Presidents, recognising in-person our Major Donors at a luncheon and a full evening of fellowship as he mingled with fellow Rotarians, culminating to his inspirational keynote ad-dress. With his articulate and motivating message, he set a tone for us to focus the next half of the year to take action on all the ideas and achieving the goals and plans that we set for ourselves. Our focus shall not be on the number of clubs but the number of Rotarians, Rotarians who are compassion, committed, accounta-ble, good stewards and belief in doing good. Rotarians who belief in sharing their gift of being a Rotarian with others, inviting busi-ness, professional and community leaders to join us.

Without Clubs there is no District, without a District there is no Governor Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be your Governor

In the coming months of January and February 2016, several Mid-Term Reviews on a Group basis will be held with Club Presidents and Assistant Governors together with District Officers and Governor. The for-mat differs from previous years as it will focus on compliance with the Registry of Society and Income Tax taking importance, as well as the Rotary Club Central, the future of club administration and manage-ment by RI. Guiding clubs in achieving the Presidential Citation through the goals set by Club Presidents will also be a priority. Club Presidents are required to attend with their respective Groups. There will also be several Inter-Country Meetings and International Projects in Thailand, Bangladesh and India following our International District projects in Sri Lanka and Cambodia. Our District Rotary Day theme “Children’s Voices For Peace” will be held on March 5th, 2016 in Alor Setar. The event to highlight Rotary’s effort in promoting peace and world understanding, and Polio eradi-cation, will provide Clubs opportunities to partner with corporates and be part of a carnival for 1000 un-derprivileged and special children. This bumper issue of the Governor’s Newsletter highlights the happenings in our District and the fantastic projects our Clubs carried out over the period September to December 2015. How successful we are as a Club very much depend on every member of the Club. It is only when Clubs are successful, can a District be successful. It begins with us. I wish you the very best as we usher in the New Year and may 2016 be a year of renewed friendship, great fun and fellowship, enjoying every moment of being a Rotarian. A Rotarian who is a Gift to the World.

“Family is where life begins and love never ends."

Rotary and Family….PP Dr YL Yee, RC Bukit Kiara Sunrise By involving our family members in Rotary, we make all of our en-deavors more enjoyable and meaningful. Once Rotarians realize that they do not have to decide between Rotary and family, they will be much more likely to become productive and happy people.

Rotary service is more successful when we share it with our family. It should be something that brings the family closer together. The more that families are involved, the more Rotary will thrive. Here, a cozy photo with my spouse Mun Yee and Rotarian Willa Wong with her mum Chow Ng, at the recent Rotary Club of Bukit Kiara Sunrise Star Wars charity movie event ... happy faces at a successful project..

Following are excerpts of President Ravi’s messages, full text at www.rotary.org

AUGUST 2015 “Today, Lego's quality standards are legendary, and its products are the most popular toys in the world: Lego pieces outnumber humans 86 to 1. We all recognize that this success stems directly from Lego's business practices – its insistence on quality, efficiency, and innovation. I compare this with our efforts in governance and accountability in Rotary, and realize that sometimes we fall short of the standards expected. The leaders at the Rotary International, zone, district, and club levels have to maintain the highest stand-ards in governance. The RI president and directors must serve the membership in a meaningful manner; zone leaders must deliver on the investment Rotary makes in them; district leaders must provide dynamic leadership in the district and focus on transparency in accounting and timely reporting of financials; and club leaders must adhere to proper reporting functions and get their clubs onto Rotary Club Central. Just as Christiansen refused to consider sending a lesser product to any of his clients, so should we refuse to consider giving a lesser effort to any of our work. We must always demand the best of ourselves – in our professional lives, and especially in our Rotary work. For in Rotary, what is our product? It is not wooden ducks or plastic bricks. It is education, water, health, and peace. It is hope, and it is life itself. For this work, only our best is good enough. I ask you all to re-member this – and to do your very best to Be a Gift to the World”.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT K R RAVINDRAN

SEPTEMBER 2015 “For the last 20 years, we have relentlessly beaten the drum of membership in Rotary. We set goals and launch campaigns, all focused on bringing in more and more members. And yet, our overall numbers remain the same. It is time to sharpen our tools. Instead of focusing on the question, "How can we bring more members into Rotary?" we should be asking ourselves, "How can we add more value to Rotary membership, so that more will join and fewer will leave?" One way we are doing that is with the new Rotary Global Rewards program, which launched in July. This innovative program allows Rotarians to connect with, and receive discounts and concessions from, busi-nesses and service providers around the world. Individual Rotarians may submit their own business to be included alongside those with which Rotary has already negotiated relationships; the most appropriate of-fers will be added to the listings. We have also created the option of allowing businesses to return a per-centage of their profit on each transaction to our Rotary Foundation, and several companies have already been locked into this part of the scheme. Each month we will update the list with additional offers that we may receive. I urge all of you to try it out by signing up on My Rotary at Rotary.org now. The more Ro-tarians participate, the stronger, and more beneficial, the program will be.”

OCTOBER 2015 “Last month, after confirming a full year without a single case of wild po-liovirus, Nigeria was removed from the list of the world's polio-endemic countries. It was the last polio-endemic country in Africa. Today, only two countries – Afghanistan and Pakistan – harbor the world's fi-nal reservoir of endemic poliovirus. As this issue of The Rotarian goes to press, global cases of polio in 2015 number only a few dozen. The scale of this achievement can hardly be overstated. Polio has existed for millennia; it has plagued hu-manity since our earliest civilizations. Today, because of Rotary's work and that of our partners, the end is in sight. We are counting down not in years, but in months And yet, our success is as fragile as it is monumental. We are moving forward, slowly, steadily, inexorably – thanks to colossal efforts that never cease. We continue to vaccinate hundreds of millions of children in vast synchronized campaigns; we constantly monitor environments to prevent new outbreaks. The sheer scale of the effort – the coordination, the cost, and the commitment – boggles the mind. Some ask why such high levels of immunization and surveillance are still needed to combat a disease that is almost gone. The answer is simple: It is the only way forward. If we did anything less – if we allowed the virus any quarter – years of work would be undone. We know too well how easily polio could spread again. We know how quickly our decades of progress could be lost. And this is why the months ahead are so tremendously important. We need your voice – to raise awareness, to raise funds, and to keep the mo-mentum going. We need your strength to help fight this war until we have won.”

NOVEMBER 2015 “Sri Lanka today is peaceful and thriving, visited by some two million tour-ists every year. Our war now is only a memory, and we as a nation look forward to a promising future. Yet so many other nations cannot say the same. Today, more of the world's countries are involved in conflict than not; a record 59.5 million people worldwide live displaced by wars and violence. In Rotary we believe, in spite of all that, in the possibility of peace – not out of idealism, but out of experi-ence. We have seen that even the most intractable conflicts can be resolved when people have more to lose by fighting than by working together. We have seen what can happen when we approach peace-building in ways that are truly radical, such as the work of our Rotary Peace Fellows. Through our Rotary Foundation, peace fellows become experts in preventing and resolving conflict. Our goal is that they will find new ways not only to end wars but to stop them before they begin. Among the hundreds of peace fellows who have graduated from the program, two from Sri Lanka, one from each side of the conflict, studied together. In the first weeks of the course, both argued passionately for the rightness of their side. Yet week by week, they grew to understand each other's perspective; today, they are good friends. When I met them and heard their story, they gave me hope. If 25 years of pain and bitterness could be overcome by Rotary, then what, indeed, is beyond us? We cannot fight violence with violence. But when we fight it with education, with understanding, and with peace, we can truly Be a Gift to the World.”

DECEMBER 2015 “By sending joy out into the world, we do not sacrifice it for ourselves – we only multiply it. As we enter this season of giving, let us mul-tiply the gifts we have been given by shar-ing them with others. Through acts of car-ing, kindness, and generosity, in our clubs and through our Foundation, we become and remain a gift to the world.”

3 secrets of Rotaract posted by Rotary International on December 31, 2015 By Fernanda Luz Moraes, president of the Rotaract Club of Cachoeirinha, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

When I began participating in Rotaract in 2012, I viewed it as a way to spend my weekends doing something good in my community. But then I realized it is so much more than that. I have met many other members of Rotaract who have a hard time explaining the passion that comes over them for doing volunteer work. The best way I can put it is this: We think globally, then act locally. I want to change the world, and in order to make it happen, I know I need to develop myleadership skills and abilities. I need to connect to people from all over, from every culture and many different occupations, to gain new ideas and fresh perspectives. I also need to act in a way that inspires leadership in others. We take action and encourage other people to act to make things happen. I have been cultivating love, enthusiasm, and happiness most of my life. Why shouldn’t I make these things part of my Rotaract experience as well? We have a lot of work to do and many people to develop. We also have much we can learn from them and alongside them. To me, those are the three secrets of Rotaract: love, enthusiasm, and happiness. Love, because love guides the world. Enthusiasm, because enthusiasm transforms problems into solutions and positive attitudes into tangi-ble results. Happiness, because happiness blinds us to sadness and discouragement, and motivates us to keep making the world better. Over the years, I have learned that Rotaract embodies all of these things. This is the way we can change our lives and change the world.

2015 Rotaract Conference was held in October at the Dusun Eco Resort in Bentong, Pahang

Rotaract Subang organised a FRUIT PARTY with the Myanmar Refugee School on 7 November from 10.30am to 1pm at Puchong.. Why a Fruit Party? Because most of the children in the school have not tasted fruits like kiwis, pamelos, ram-butans, strawberries, persimmons, blue-berries, peaches in their life so we decid-ed to bring all of these and let them try it all!!

DISTRICT INTERACT CONFERENCE Another feather for District 3300, the publicity on our Interact Conference in the media – The efforts of Organ-ising Chairman, Capt Gunasekaran and host club Rotary Club of Klang gave our Interactors the opportunity to experience life in the Navy. Congratulations too, to President Adrian Minjoot and the club’s Youth Service Chair, Rtn Anthony Das for an excellent and successful 2015 Interact Conference. While we do experience challenges with our Interact Clubs not being recognised in some schools, these con-tinued efforts to showcase the youth activities Rotary is involved, hope to change the mindset and perception of schools and some government agencies to support and facilitate our Youth Services programs. We need to take cognizant of these challenges and must remain committed to promote positive development in our youth through Interact and Rotaract. This responsibility lies on Rotarians. It is only through smart-partnerships with both government and corporate bodies can we further enhance Rotary’s presence in Malaysia and to add value to the good work many of our Rotary clubs are doing. Thank you to all the clubs who sponsored their Interactors to the District Interact Conference. The presences of over 450 Interactors at TLDM over the 4 days and the talents some of the Interactors displayed was to the amazement of the Vice Admiral himself. We are certainly proud of our Interactors, they are a Gift to us.

Be a Gift to the World From the viewpoint of an Interactor

Chuan Sze Huei, President of Interact Club of MGS 2015/16 Be a gift to the world. How can I be a gift to the world? I’m just a stu-

dent, nothing more than a tiny piece of puzzle that fits in this world.

What can I do? If someone had asked me that question, I’m sure many

of us won’t be able to answer immediately. But, after some thought,

we can be a gift to the world. No matter how small a part we play and

no matter how insignificant we may be, each and every Interactor

owns a certain ability that no other normal members of other clubs

do.

We have the power to be a light to the community and the world. Interactors are so special. We spread love,

kindness and I believe that every project we do restores a little more humanity that is lost today. We bring

back hope for our current generation to do good things, little by little. We might even inspire others to fol-

low our footsteps. And, every little act of goodness counts. For us, this is truly what our club is meant to do,

hence the motto, “Service Above Self”.

Through our many activities and projects, we aim to shine this light to the world and be a gift to our school,

our community, our country and our world. It only takes one person to start this chain and it can really

make a difference no matter big or small.

FACES OF OUR YOUTH

With fond memories of Rotarians who are longer with us and honouring the legacies they left behind for us to continue their good work in Rotary…. May their souls rest in peace.

PP Thillai Amirthalingam Departed December 6, 2016 Rotary Club of Ipoh South

Dear Pres Mogana Rajan My sincere condolences to the family of a dear friend. It is indeed a sad loss. At such a young age, so much more to achieve, so much more to contrib-ute to society and family. His unceasing smile has impressed many of us and will certainly be etched in

our minds for a lifetime. A Rotaractor from RAC Klang went on to join Rotary at KRIS. He never forgot Klang. We were invited for his induction as a mem-ber and installation as President. The day one leaves this abode to a land of no return, it is a solo journey. I trust some day we will meet our dear friend in another time and another world. Till then with a heavy heart, filled with sorrow, we bid him farewell. Laksh RC Klang

Dear DC Inner Wheel District 330 Ambika Ravi Menon & DG Rotary Club District 3300 Siti Subaidah Adil, Presidents and members of the clubs of the above dis-tricts. On behalf of my family, I would sincerely like to thank all of you for:-

1. The lovely wreaths sent. 2. Very generous donations for Joblink and SPCA Penang.

3. The kind words written about Gurdev. 4. Condolences and support rendered during our bereavement.

I am at loss of words to express our gratitude to all of you. Gurdev never left home without Rotary pin on his collar. Many years ago, during a trip to Chicago, the then Rotary International President gave Gurdev a colourful Rotary tie. He had it on during the cremation.

Gurdev had a very blessed passing away in Amritsar. He passed away while praying with PDG Dato’ Dr Santokh Singh. Gurdev made our 3 grandchildren PHF holders. Thank you PDG Leslie Salehuddin for vividly remembering pinning the PHF badge on Ravneet. Gurdev has left a legacy for all who cared for him to follow. We think there is enough Time to Live, But we Never know which Moment is the Last So SHARE, CARE, LOVE and CELEBRATE Every moment of LIFE. Daljit, Kuljit, Gurmeet, Amreet & grandkids

Dear President Danny, It was with a heavy heart that we learned of the demise of PP Lim Kee Moon, whom we have know for many years.

I fondly remember him making a pun of his name and asking me to call him "Timun". He was a jovi-al and dedicated Rotarian and will be missed by RC Sitiawan and also by D3300.

May God give his family strength to bear this heavy loss. Regards PP Dr. Krishna and PP Pushpa Krishna RC Melawati
