From Fr. Joe…

Thanks to all the many volunteers who answered the call last Sunday when we asked for more volunteers for this Sunday’s Holy Harvest Festival! You’re the best!

Speaking of volunteers…we are now seeking volunteers for the It’s Our Church, It’s Our Future Capital Campaign. We’re looking for help with mailings, receptions, and phone calls. Just complete the card found in your pew or the form found in your bulletin to let us know you’re willing and able. Please note that those making phone calls will not be asking for pledges (we all feel the very same way about telemarketers); calls will be made because hearing directly from a fellow parishioner adds the per-sonal touch to our campaign. Many hands (and ears and voices) make light work!

At long last, we rejoice to welcome back Fr. Scott Belina! He’ll be returning to St. André’s on Wednesday, September 19. You’ll see him at Mass (he’ll be preaching at all of them next Sunday) and around town a bit, but I’m sure he’ll be spending a fair share of the next week packing in preparation for his move to Massena on Wednesday, September 26. We will have a farewell reception for Fr. Scott following the 11:00am Mass next Sunday in the chapel at Notre Dame. I hope many of you will come to say ―hello‖ and ―good-bye,‖ and to thank Fr. Scott for his priestly ministry among us these past three years.

And that means this is the final weekend we’ll be getting help from the good priests of St. Peter’s Parish in Massena. We thank Fr. Mark, Fr. Tojo, and Fr. Michael for taking turns in making the trek each week since the beginning of June to offer Mass, hear confessions, and preach the Gospel. We’re so very grateful!

LETTER FROM OUR BISHOP

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

The Church celebrates Catechetical Sunday on September 16, 2018 when some of our parishioners will be commissioned as catechists. We are so fortunate and truly blessed to have such generous women and men who sacrifice their time to help our parents in their critical responsibility of training their children in the Catholic faith. In the past, our catechists were clergy or religious who had exten-sive training and formation in the Catholic faith. Given the drastic decrease in their number, dedicated lay people now lead our parish’s catechetical efforts. Their Catholic education and faith formation have become more urgent. The catechist works to un-derstand and be comfortable in articulating the Catholic faith in the many areas that comprise the fullness of Church teaching. First and foremost, the catechist, him or herself, must be a disci-ple of Jesus Christ. This year’s theme, ―Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ,‖ reminds us that catechesis is not the mere sharing of information, but an inherent aspect of discipleship. I must know Whom it is that I am called to follow and with whom I am on this journey. If we desire that those whom we lead would de-velop a personal encounter with Jesus, we best have one our-selves. When we don’t, our words reveal a hollow, fraudulent witness. The catechist seeks to understand the changing parish landscape and is an active force in the ongoing vitality of the faith life of the local parish as local pastoral planning evolves. They have an acute sensitivity to and respect for the parishioners whose parish-es have closed or have been merged or reconfigured into new parish communities. No one must feel left behind or lost in the cracks. Our catechists develop the skills that enhances collabora-tion and flexibility in community-building endeavors in our par-ish catechetical programs. More and more, our parents, our families need our help. Increas-ingly, they are unable to pass on the faith inasmuch as their own personal knowledge of it may be weak. Strengthening Faith For-mation in Family Life, our catechetical efforts energetically sup-port our parent’s role as the first catechists of their children. That can only be accomplished with a real sensitivity to the complexi-ties of today’s family. Flexibility is an essential characteristic in any endeavor to meet the varying needs of today’s families. What we’ve always done, what everyone else is doing will not suffice. As Pope Francis wrote in The Joy of Love, ―We need to find the right language, arguments and forms of witness that can help us reach the hearts of young people, appealing to their capacity for generosity, commitment, love and even heroism…‖ (#40) Inspired and energized by the Gospel and empowered by the Ho-ly Spirit, we invite our families to discover, celebrate and deepen their relationship with Christ in the midst of the local family of faith. Catechesis is critical to the evangelizing mission of the Church and to the health and vitality of a parish and its people. We congratulate and support all those in our parishes who help to strengthen faith formation in family life.

Faithfully yours in Christ, Most Reverend Terry R. LaValley Bishop of Ogdensburg

To report abuse: If you have a complaint of suspected misconduct involving Catholic clergy, religious, em-ployees, or volunteers, contact Terrianne Yanulavich, diocesan Victims Assistance Coordinator (518-483-3261 or [email protected]) or Fr. Christopher Carrara, Vicar for Pastoral Personnel (315-393-2920 ext. 1340). Making a report to the Dio-cese of Ogdensburg in no way means that you should not make a report to police or child protective agencies.

A Prayer for Healing

Hear the humble prayer of your people, God our Father, as we implore your mercy. Bring healing to all who have suffered physical, emotional, or sexual abuse at the hands of your ministers and restore them to fullness of life. Forgive your Church for the im-mense evil that has been committed and the great harm that has been done. Grant the grace of true repent-ance to all who have broken sacred trust, destroyed precious in-nocence, and failed to protect your beloved children entrusted to their pastoral care. Reconcile us to one another and never allow us be parted from you. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

“The Lord heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3)

dedication and sacrifices made by the women and men in Law Enforcement/Corrections and to pray for their safety, as well as for their families and communities. What Happened to the Sign of Peace?

The exchange of a friendly handshake or a hug shortly before Holy Communion is a mo-ment of peace and joy—two precious things of which every victim of sexual abuse has been robbed. Throughout this month of Sep-tember, we will omit the sign of peace to stand in solidarity with all who have been hurt by the crimes and cover-up of members

of the Catholic clergy, and as a vivid reminder of the urgent need for us to be real instruments of Christ’s peace in our broken Church and troubled world.

For those who are unfamiliar with our churches, did you know…

…that there are a number of handicapped parking spaces and a fully accessible en-trance at the east end of Notre Dame Church? …that there is a restroom with a changing

table at Notre Dame, found through the doorway near the statue of St. André? …that a restroom in the rectory—accessed by the front door—is available for use whenever St. Helen’s Church is open? If you cannot find what you need, please do not be afraid to ask. We want everyone to feel right at home here in St. André’s Parish!
