Welcome to St. André’s Parish! No matter who you are, where you’ve come from, or what brings you here, we’re so glad to have you with us. St. André Bessette (1845-1937) spent much of his life serving as the door-keeper of his religious community; like him, we strive to open doors for our neighbors to experi-ence the loving mercy of God. May Jesus fill your heart with his grace and peace!

From Fr. Joe… Wednesday, July 26, is the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary and grandparents of Je-sus. First a French fort, and now a shrine, dedicated to ―good St. Anne‖ has stood about an hour-and-a-half from here on the north-ern Vermont shore of Lake Champlain since all the way back in 1666. I plan on going on a brief pilgrimage to St. Anne’s Shrine in Isle La Motte, VT, that afternoon/evening—and you‘re all wel-come to join me. This will NOT be a organized parish pilgrim-age, but a very informal kind of thing. There is a 7:00pm Mass at the shrine (in the lakeside pavilion-style chapel), followed by a candlelight procession. My plan is to leave the Notre Dame park-ing lot at 4:00pm sharp, arrive and eat a picnic supper (everybody brings their own) at 5:30pm, and be back in Malone at 10:00/10:30pm. It‘s a quick trip, and a late return, but visiting this shrine—especially on the feast—was a regular feature of my family‘s summer when I was growing up, which very much nur-tured my faith and my vocation. So consider bringing the kids! Any and all of you are most welcome to follow me. No RSVP is necessary…I just ask that you be ready to go on time. Visit Fr. Joe's blog: http://fromemptyhands.blogspot.com/

Solidarity in Faith

Praying for our Brothers and Sisters in Syria Let us pray, for those whose lives have been sown in a field of weeds. May they persevere until the final harvest. In a special way for those enduring persecution for their faith in Latakia (La-TA-heeya), Syria.

LETTER FROM OUR BISHOP Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: ―It‘s Time! Say ‗Yes‘ to God‘s Plan for Married Love.‖ The theme for this year‘s National NFP Awareness Week (July 23–29) challenges us to embrace God‘s beautiful plan for marriage. It‘s time that we reacquaint ourselves with God‘s design for marriage that has been revealed to us in the Scriptures and Church teaching. It‘s time that we, as parish families, married couples and as indi-viduals, recommit ourselves to teaching our youth the beauty of the sacrament of Holy Matrimony. It‘s time to look critically at what society is telling us about love, marriage, and sex in light of God‘s law of love. Yes, we know it‘s time. In fact, that is one of the reasons why we have chosen Strengthening Faith Formation in Family Life as an important diocesan priority, particularly through family catechesis. It‘s time! We need to reclaim our rich faith heritage concerning the Sac-rament of Marriage and God‘s loving plan for husband, wife and children. It‘s time to support and embrace the precious gift of the family. Whenever we try to bring God into the public square, we are often scolded for ―imposing‖ our beliefs, our individual mo-rality on others. More and more, expressing concern for the com-mon good and any discussion of right and wrong bring a negative response. It‘s Time! Say ‗Yes‘ to God‘s Plan for Married Love. In their pastoral letter, Marriage: Love and Life in the Divine Plan, the U.S. Bishops write that ―God‘s plan for marriage is a firm foundation, a truthful guide, a trustworthy light for the way.‖ So, we continue to preach the truth about marriage and responsi-ble parenthood. It remains a trustworthy light for our world, dark-ened by sin and self-gratification, by fostering faithful and gener-ous life-giving spousal love. This week, the Church engages in a national educational cam-paign on the gift of Natural Family Planning. NFP is about giving oneself freely, totally, faithfully, and fruitfully to another person in marriage. To many, such a commitment seems nearly impossi-ble today. To make oneself totally vulnerable, to sacrifice for the love of another is the heroism of the marital vocation. Such a self-less witness for life is a tangible sign of hope. Please visit our NFP office at our diocesan website: www.rcdony.org to learn more about this important element of the Church‘s teaching on marriage. We are truly blessed to have Suzanne and Angelo Pietropaoli serve as our diocesan directors of Natural Family Planning. Please contact them at the NFP office at 518-483-0459 or via email at [email protected] for more information or assistance in this important ministry that makes for stronger marriages and healthy, happier families.

Faithfully yours in Christ, Most Reverend Terry R. LaValley Bishop of Ogdensburg

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Wis 12:13, 16-19/Rom 8:26-27/Mt 13:24-43 or 13:24-30 The tiny mustard seed grows into a big bush (which produces more mustard seeds). A little yeast makes the entire dough rise. A little holiness can have a profound effect on the world. So often we focus on the evil in the world, on the sin and suffering around us. It is easy to let scandal and sin dis-courage us. Yet, if we know where to look, the Kingdom of God is all around us and growing. It is growing in the person nervous-ly standing in line to go to Confession. It is growing in the teen-ager who befriends the new kid in the neighborhood. It is present whenever we decide to live our faith out loud and share Christ‘s love by performing corporal or spiritual works of mercy. We may never know the fruit that our little acts of faith and love pro-duce, yet it is the Kingdom of God growing all around us.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

―Nature is filled with words of love, but now can we listen to them amid constant noise, interminable, and nerve-wracking dis-

tractions or the cult of appearances‖ (Francis 146). We live in a technologically advanced society where there are many distrac-tions that take place in our everyday lives. Our smart phones,

social media, materialism, all distract us from our connection with nature and God. A few simple ways to go back to our roots

would be to turn off all the distractions, go for a walk or bike ride, meditate or pray. Instead of planning a large vacation, try a stay-

cation where you can reduce your carbon footprint and seek out local attractions in your area or stay at home ―unplugged‖ from technology.

Is God Calling YOU?

―The Spirit too helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought.‖ Do you approach the Lord in prayer with the confident strength given by the Holy Spirit asking that He make known your unique vocation? If God may be inviting you to consider the priesthood, diaconate or consecrated life, call Father Doug Lucia at: 315-375-6571, or e-mail: [email protected].

Thank you!

It was awesome to see so many folks come to the gathering! Thank you for taking the time to come and celebrate with Sr. Barbara Schivoni and Sr. Mary Elizabeth Looby. Thanks to the Gillette‘s and the Beddoe‘s for arranging for the party and Fr. Joe for welcoming us to stay at St. Helen‘s residence! It was wonderful to connect with so many at the gathering and at several other places like church, restaurants, supermarket and the new nursing home! It‘s lovely to be remembered so fondly!

SECOND COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND

The second collection next Sunday, will be taken up for the Missionary Projects of the Diocense of Ogdensburg. This special collec- tion will support our Solidarity of Faith ef- forts in the Diocese of Latakia in Syria as well as continued financial support of our former Mission in Mollendo, Peru while supporting The U.S. Bishop‘s annual appeal for Latin America and to help any other missionary projects throughout the world that the Diocese might deem appropriate as part of its evangelization effort.

Sacrament of Baptism Parents who wish to have a child baptized should contact Rev. Joseph Giroux to make arrangements for the date and for a program of preparation. Parents are highly encour-aged to make arrangements at least three months before the child is born, as the Catholic Church encourages Baptism for infants as soon as possible after birth. Adults and older children (seven years or older) interested in Baptism or en-tering into full communion with the Catholic Church should inquire about the program of preparation (R.C.I.A.: the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Sacrament of Matrimony A Catholic wishing to be married in one of our churches should contact one of the priests at least six months prior to the desired date in order to begin making arrangements. A program of preparation is required. The parish should be contacted before any other plans are made—for example, the wedding reception. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick For those preparing for surgery, nursing home residents, or the homebound, contact one of the parish priests to make arrangements to be anointed. For those in the hospital (especially in the event of an emergency), ask the hospital staff to contact the priest on call.
