11:00am Mass

FROM FR. JOE…

Lent is already upon us! As usual here at St. André’s, you will find a few different booklets of daily devotions for the Lenten season near the doors of our churches this Sunday—including selections for children and for families. Among them, you will also find the latest book to be written by bestselling Catholic au-thor Matthew Kelly: Rediscover Jesus: An Invitation. The book is broken into 40 chapters, making it perfect for Lent. (Note: To count the 40 days of Lent, start on Ash Wednesday, but skip over all the Sundays since every Sunday is a “little Easter.") I plan to make this book part of my own Lenten commitment this year. We purchased 100 copies, and they’re available first come, first serve. Also as has been customary here, each Friday during Lent we will have the Stations of the Cross at 11:30am at Notre Dame Church (immediately preceding the 12:05pm Mass). Special for this Ju-bilee Year of Mercy, we will be using some newly published booklets, Praying the Stations of Mercy with Pope Francis, which are composed of reflections by the Holy Father. If your schedule allows, please consider coming to take part in this weekly time of prayer. Visit Fr. Joe's blog: http://fromemptyhands.blogspot.com/

LETTER FROM OUR BISHOP

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

Our 2016 Lenten journey of faith cannot be isolated from cur-rent world events. Dire poverty, mass migration, persecution and unrelenting violence cause such terror in the lives of millions of individuals. Fueled by greed, anger and self-righteous intolerance, hardened hearts are breaking untold fragile lives. Closer to home, joblessness and drug abuse lead to a sense of hopelessness and discouragement.

Pope Francis urges us not to remain indifferent or to treat as routine such affronts to human life and dignity. Hurting people, near and far, need our care and attention. Can Lent this Jubilee Year of Mercy be different for you and me? As I probe the depth of God’s mercy and compassion for me, will I muster the Spirit’s gift of courage to reach out and accompany the hurting with the same loving concern I receive from God?

The Lenten Season provides the setting where we can avail ourselves of opportunities to grow closer to our merciful Lord. Daily Mass, faith formation classes, Eucharistic adoration, the Stations of the Cross, fasting, and celebration of the Sacrament of Penance are graced means to encounter Jesus, to experience His merciful love, and to deepen our love for Him.

As the Holy Father teaches, “what the Church tradition calls the spiritual and corporal works of mercy…remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit: by feeding, visiting, comforting and instructing them. On such things,” Pope Francis writes, “will we be judged.”

While, perhaps, most of us are not able to offer personally these works of mercy to those suffering terrible afflictions across the globe, we can, we must be attentive to the hurting in our neighborhoods. Many of our parish families have a long history of social outreach to the hurting. Organizations such as Catholic Charities, the Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, to name just a few, along with local Church and community groups are engaged in the cor-poral and spiritual works of mercy. This Lent can be the occasion where I consider my own participation in such works in my own neighborhood.

I pray that through the graces and spiritual strength we receive from our participation at Eucharist and other Lenten devotional practices, God’s mercy can clear our vision to see the hurting in our midst and transform our hearts to respond with tenderness and compassion to their needs. Let us pray for one another.

Faithfully yours in Christ, Most Reverend Terry R. LaValley Bishop of Ogdensburg

THE ROLE OF MUSIC IN THE LITURGY

Music at Mass “Singing by the gathered assembly and ministers is im-portant at all celebrations. Not every part that can be sung should necessarily be sung at every celebration; rather ‘preference should be given to those [parts] that are of greater importance’.” (cf. General Instruction of

the Roman Missal, no. 40). (cf. Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship, no. 115). [This is the first of a nine part series on the different levels of importance in singing the parts of the Mass].

Is God Calling YOU? “They left everything and followed Jesus.” If you are seeking greater simplicity of life and a closer following of the Lord in prayer and action, consider that He may be calling you to the priesthood, diaconate or consecrated life. If you think you may be called to serve Jesus as a priest, deacon or in the consecrated life, consider the power of His grace at work in you, call Fr. Joe, Fr. Scott or Fr. Bryan at 483-1300 or 483-4074, or visit the Voca-tion website at www.myvocation.net.
