Welcome to St. André’s Parish! No matter who you are, where you’ve come from, or what brings you here, we’re so glad to have you with us. St. André Bessette (1845-1937) spent much of his life serving as the door-keeper of his religious community; like him, we strive to open doors for our neighbors to experi-ence the loving mercy of God. May Jesus fill your heart with his grace and peace!

From Fr. Joe… In case you haven’t already heard, there are a couple of bridges out here in the parish—and they haven’t been washed out by all the recent rain. The Lane Street Bridge (between West Street and Lower Park Street) in the village, and the bridge just above the dam in Chasm Falls (both of them over the Salmon River) are currently closed for repairs, effecting some folks who are headed to Mass at St. John Bosco and St. Helen’s, respectively. Before you’re trying to rush in on a Sunday morning and suddenly find yourself faced with a bright orange sign that reads, “Bridge Closed,” be sure to look at a map and plan an alternate route to Mass. Speaking of building bridges…despite some hefty down-pours, our recent parish picnic (Friday, July 7) was a great suc-cess. The rain may have had folks taking shelter under tents and in the garage, but it didn’t seem to dampen any spirits—nor pre-vent the young and young at heart from playing a few games in the yard or roasting some marshmallows around the bonfire. It was a delightful way to spend a summer’s evening and enjoy the company of fellow parishioners. Thanks to all who came and brought so many delicious dishes to share. Part of the picnic festivities was July’s Hearts on Fire holy hour—every First Friday from 7:00-8:00pm. We’d hoped the picnic would lead a few new folks to check our this beautiful evening of prayer and praise…and it did. We had toddlers, teen-agers, and some well-seasoned parishioners—and few of our neighbors from other parishes, too—who spent the hour together before the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. (A resident of The Alice Center who came out to join us—well past her bedtime—said, “I’m sure Jesus’ Heart was very pleased by the way we sang his praises.” Touching, isn’t it?) Since Hearts on Fire started back in December, every time a new person decides to check it out, I hear, “That was wonderful, Father! I wish I’d decided to come before tonight.” If you haven’t yet, why not give it a try? Mark your calendars for August 5 and September 1. Visit Fr. Joe's blog: http://fromemptyhands.blogspot.com/

Solidarity in Faith

Praying for our Brothers and Sisters in Syria Let us pray that the faith of Christians—especially those in our twinned diocese in Syr-ia—may not be scorched, choked, or withered, but may it produce rich fruit.

FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Readings: Is 55:10-11/Rom 8:18-23/Mt 13:1-23 or 13:1-9

In Jesus’ parable of the

sower and the seed, we realize that Jesus gives us

what we need freely and liberally. We have so

many opportunities to hear his word, but do we listen? It is so easy to get

distracted by noise of our world and to let the word

of the Gospel go in one ear and out the other.

Like a farmer tills the soil to receive the seed, do we prepare ourselves to hear

Christ’s word? Can we carve out some quiet time to read the Gospel and pray with that Word? At Mass, can we listen atten-

tively and perhaps remember one word or phrase from the read-ings? The Word of God is powerful and effective, but for it to

affect us, we must engage it, grapple with it, discuss it and share it. Do not let the Word of God be sown in vain.

Sacrament of Baptism Parents who wish to have a child baptized should contact Rev. Joseph Giroux to make arrangements for the date and for a program of preparation. Parents are highly encour-aged to make arrangements at least three months before the child is born, as the Catholic Church encourages Baptism for infants as soon as possible after birth. Adults and older children (seven years or older) interested in Baptism or en-tering into full communion with the Catholic Church should inquire about the program of preparation (R.C.I.A.: the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Sacrament of Matrimony A Catholic wishing to be married in one of our churches should contact one of the priests at least six months prior to the desired date in order to begin making arrangements. A program of preparation is required. The parish should be contacted before any other plans are made—for example, the wedding reception. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick For those preparing for surgery, nursing home residents, or the homebound, contact one of the parish priests to make arrangements to be anointed. For those in the hospital (especially in the event of an emergency), ask the hospital staff to contact the priest on call.
