From Fr. Joe…. Those who visit Notre Dame Church this weekend will notice something a little different: the statue of Mary. The usual statue of Our Lady of Fatima (brought directly back from Portugal many years ago) will be used for the Consecration of the Diocese of Ogdensburg to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in St. Mary’s Ca-thedral this Sunday afternoon. It’s an honor for our parish to be asked to contribute to the ceremony in this way. I’ll take every precaution to make sure she gets there and back safely! In the meantime, we’ve borrowed a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes from Holy Family School (one which previously belonged to the local court of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas). I want to give you a little update on the pastoral planning pro-cess here at St. André’s. As you know, we sent our completed plan to Bishop LaValley at the end of June. After an initial re-view by the diocesan Living Stones Planning Committee (which advises the Bishop on such matters), we were asked in mid-August to seek another round of parishioner input and reiterate the reasons behind many of the most notable aspects of the plan. We did that in a series of bulletin articles on the subject and, as always, welcomed your comments. All of those were brought to the table at the most recent meeting of the Pastoral Council on September 18. After much discussion and careful consideration, the Council felt that all the reasons behind the plan remained just as valid as before, and unanimously affirmed it un-changed to be resubmitted to the Bishop. In order to help him in his deliberations, Bishop LaValley then asked me to meet with him in person and discuss the plan. At his invitation, I also brought Fr. Scott and five of our parishioners with me to Ogdens-burg on October 12, where the Bishop generously gave us two hours of his time. Bishop spent most of that time listening, and concerns were shared with much passion and real honesty. We all came away feeling that it went rather well. The Living Stones Planning Committee is next scheduled to meet sometime in No-vember, at which time they will again review our plan. We did not come away from the meeting with any more concrete details than that. As always, I’ll keep you posted when I hear more… Visit Fr. Joe's blog: http://fromemptyhands.blogspot.com/

Solidarity in Faith

Praying for our Brothers and Sisters in Syria Let us pray that the inscription of God may be seen and cherished in the lives of all—especially for our friends being persecuted in Latakia (La-TA-heeya), Syria.

Welcome to St. André’s Parish! No matter who you are, where you’ve come from, or what brings you here, we’re so glad to have you with us. St. André Bessette (1845-1937) spent much of his life serving as the door-keeper of his religious community; like him, we strive to open doors for our neighbors to experi-ence the loving mercy of God. May Jesus fill your heart with his grace and peace!

THE VOCATION OF A PARISH “Many people today are disoriented and lost in search of genuine fellowship. Often their lives are either too superficial or shattered by brokenness. Their work often is dehumaniz-ing. They long for an experience of genuine encounter with others, for true fellow-ship. Well, is this not precisely the vocation of a parish? Are we not called to be a warm, brotherly family together? Are we not people united together in the household of

God through our common life? Your parish is not mainly a structure, a geographical area or a building. The parish is first and foremost a community of the faithful. This is the task of a parish today: to be a community, to rediscover its identity as a community. You are not a Christian all by yourself. To be a Christian means to believe and to live one’s faith together with others. For fellowship to grow, the priest’s role is not enough, even though he plays an essential role. The commitment of all parishioners is needed. Each of their contributions is vital.”

This November—Go Nazarite!

In recent years, various groups have promoted “No-Shave November” as a fun way to raise money or awareness about different issues. Fr. Joe and Fr. Scott (for reasons written all over their faces) were pleased last year to see a Catholic group of men taking this up as the Nazarite Challenge—and were excited when a number of men from St. André’s accepted the chal-lenge and grew out their whiskers. (Nazarites—like Samson and St. John the Baptist—were men conse-

crated to God by several vows…including not to shave or cut their hair.) Those who take the challenge are asked to (1) sign up, (2) not shave, (3) pray daily, (4) give up something, and (5) commit to shar-ing the Gospel. You can read more about it (and sign up) at http://nazaritechallenge.com/. If any men from the parish sign up, please let one of the priests know so we can band together and support one another (and take a really fun group photo at the end of the month).

SEVEN REVOLUTIONS

This November, we’re offering a 4-part series based on the book, Seven Revolu-tions: How Christianity Changed the World and Can Change It Again (270 pages). This will not be a “class,” but a book discussion based on weekly readings—asking ques-tions and sharing insights. The book exam-ines the practices of the early Church—a body of Christians living in the Roman Em-pire—and shows how the lessons learned from them can apply to Christians living in

the United States today. It’s both a great introduction to Chris-tian history and a guide for navigating modern times as a Catho-lic. The series will take place on four Tuesdays, begin-ning November 7, at 6:30pm in the chapel at Notre Dame. The book costs $20 (we only have 25 available, so sign up soon) or it can be download ($15 on Amazon).
