Welcome to St. André’s Parish! No matter who you are, where you’ve come from, or what brings you here, we’re so glad to have you with us. St. André Bessette (1845-1937) spent much of his life serving as the door-keeper of his religious community; like him, we strive to open doors for our neighbors to experience the loving mercy of God. May Jesus fill your heart with his grace and peace!

LETTER FROM OUR BISHOP

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: When Bishop Bryan J. McEntegart, the fifth bishop of our diocese, launched the North Country Catholic in 1946, he understood the important role that newspapers played in the lives of Americans at that time. Every-one listened to their radios and pored over newspapers to learn about what was happening in the world. It would be another decade before families brought televisions into their homes and no one could have predicted the changes in communication that we have seen here in the 21st century. We now have instant access to news through the internet on websites, Facebook and Twitter. So, we wonder, is there still a place for a diocesan newspaper? Absolutely. The North Country Catholic continues to be the most efficient and effective way for me to communicate with Catholics in the Diocese of Ogdensburg. During these challenging times, it is more important than ever that families welcome into their homes a Catholic perspective on the news of the day. For the New Evangelization, we must reach out to Catholics who are less than fully active in our faith, who don’t worship with us on a regular basis. We must go to them. The North Country Catholic delivered into homes does this, maintaining some con-nection with them to the Church, perhaps encouraging them to a deeper practice of their faith. Since the publication of its first issue, the North Country Cath-olic has remained a critical source of communication for our local Church which covers such an expansive area. During the coming year, a primary focus of the NCC will be an examination of how we are meeting our diocesan priorities as we continue to realize our Diocesan Pastoral Vision: “Find Your Home in Christ: Re-new Faith, Nurture Hope, Discover Love.” This weekend, the annual North Country Catholic subscription campaign begins in all our parishes. I ask that every Catholic family subscribe to the paper. Those who read the North Country Catholic enjoy timely and relevant articles on prayer, scripture, Church and religious news that are featured every week. If you are a current subscriber to our diocesan newspaper, please renew your subscription in this week’s campaign. Why not consider obtaining a subscription as a gift for a family member? I invite those who don’t currently subscribe to consider how im-portant it is today to be an informed Catholic Christian and allow our diocesan newspaper to be a vehicle to help you and your fam-ilies grow in faith. I hope that you accept my invitation to welcome the North Country Catholic into your home. With much gratitude for your prayerful support, I am

Faithfully yours in Christ, Most Reverend Terry R. LaValley Bishop of Ogdensburg

March 23, at 4:00 pm at the parish center at Notre Dame Church. The guest presenter will be Father Al Hauser speaking on two topics: “Why We Sing at

Mass” and “How to Pray as We Sing.” Everyone is welcome. The presentation will be followed by a pot-luck dinner (please bring a

A SPECIAL INVITATION

On Palm Sunday, April 9, 2017 at 4:00 pm, St. André Bessette Parish will present its second “Meditation in Word and Song

on the Seven Last Words of Christ.” These familiar “last words” are the last sayings Jesus uttered from the cross on

Good Friday including “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” Brief Scripture readings are accompanied by meditations in word and song. Come. Begin Holy Week with

Palm Sunday and these profound words of Jesus.

Sacrament of Baptism Parents who wish to have a child baptized should contact Rev. Joseph Giroux to make arrangements for the date and for a program of preparation. Parents are highly encour-aged to make arrangements at least three months before the child is born, as the Catholic Church encourages Baptism for infants as soon as possible after birth. Adults and older children (seven years or older) interested in Baptism or en-tering into full communion with the Catholic Church should inquire about the program of preparation (R.C.I.A.: the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Sacrament of Matrimony A Catholic wishing to be married in one of our churches should contact one of the priests at least six months prior to the desired date in order to begin making arrangements. A program of preparation is required. The parish should be contacted before any other plans are made—for example, the wedding reception. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick For those preparing for surgery, nursing home residents, or the homebound, contact one of the parish priests to make arrangements to be anointed. For those in the hospital (especially in the event of an emergency), ask the hospital staff to contact the priest on call.
