I n this issue of techs & specs we are taking a look at a few of the many lines of haymaking products that are available in the Western Canadian marketplace. With the return to profitability

of the beef cattle sector and sustained profits in the sheep industry, it seemed like a good oppor-tunity to examine some of the equipment that is available for 2012. Whether expanding a herd or maintaining one, there were several years in the past decade where forage machinery replace-ment was restricted due to low operating margins. Lower north American breeding numbers and expanding world demand for animal protein appears to be powering the improved price cycle that is currently underway.

For livestock producers a brighter economic horizon is sending many to their farm equipment dealers in search of new and late model haying equipment and larger, dual-purpose windrower swathers.

We hope our summaries and specifications tables in this fall edition of techs & specs will be useful tools when seeking some new iron for the spring or comparing choices during 2012.

While we endeavour to be comprehensive and accurate in our coverage, due to the complexities of publishing technical specifications, space constraints and the wide variety choices available to the north American farmer, we are confident there will be some omissions in our tables. We encourage readers to contact their local dealers and machinery manufacturers when making purchasing decisions.

By Brian Cross, Western Producer staff

High grain prices could cause problems this year for beef producers trying to keep winter feeding costs in check.

Ken Ziegler, a beef and forage specialist with Alberta Agriculture, said cattle producers anticipating high grain prices should be looking for alternatives to feed grain.

“In years when grain was cheap, it was logical to make up for nutrient shortfalls with a bit of extra grain,” Ziegler said.

“Today, because of the rising cost of grain, the quest to control the cost per pound of gain is more challenging.”

He said feeding high quality hay or silage can eliminate the need for supplemental grain.

Hay or silage that contains total digestible nutrients (TDN) of 65 percent will provide backgrounded calves with enough energy to record an average daily gain (ADG) of 1.75 pounds.

Using implants or feed with even higher TDN values could improve gain rates to as much as two lb. per day.

Ziegler said producers hoping to harvest high quality forage should cut their feed at the optimal stage of plant growth and minimize quality losses during storage.

Forage quality is high but yields are low early in a feed crop’s growth cycle, while yields increase but forage quality decreases as the plant matures. That’s because the amount of fibrous stems increases relative to leafy material, where most nutrients are found.

Jenifer Heyden, a regional livestock specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture, said stage of maturity is the most important factor affecting hay quality.

“As plants age, protein and energy decrease and fibre increases,” she said.

“In 2010, we saw a lot of over-mature hay or hay that was severely impacted by weathering. Most feed analysis came back as low protein,

Quality hay could step in for grainlow energy and high fibre.”

Ziegler said cutting grasses at the early bloom stage and forage crops at the bud to early flower stage will ensure a high quality harvest.

Producers should consider cutting their forage crops a week to two weeks earlier than normal this year, he added.

Ziegler said curing and moisture content also warrant close consideration.

Losses during cutting and harvest are caused primarily by respiration and leaf shatter.

Producers should cut feed early in the day to reduce respiration-related losses and lay material in wide swaths to increase solar drying.

Ideally, producers will make round bales when the moisture content is close to 18 percent. Square bales have a lower moisture tolerance and should not exceed 15 percent, although bale density should also be considered.

Andre Bonneau, a forage management specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture, said producers might be able to bale hay at slightly elevated moisture levels depending on the size and density of the bale and its ability to release heat.

Baled hay’s moisture content can be increased if chemical or biological forage preservatives are used, but the cost may be prohibitive and the efficacy of some products are hit and miss.

To hasten dry down of cut crops, wide swaths can be raked with little or no forage loss when moisture content is 40 to 50 percent.

Leaf loss or leaf shatter is a critical consideration.Leafy material generally dries down three to five times faster than

stems and becomes brittle at moisture levels below 30 percent. The risk of nutrient losses and weather damage can be greatly

reduced if swathed forages are harvested at moisture levels of 40 to 55 percent.

Harvesting as chopped silage is a proven strategy for maximizing quality.

Another is haylage or bale tubing. While traditional hay is normally baled at less than 20 percent

moisture, haylage can be baled at up to 50 percent moisture. The bales are wrapped in a polyethylene tubing at harvest and are

resistant to spoilage and weather damage as long as the wrapping is not punctured.

Drawbacks include additional machinery costs and the weight of the bales during handling and transport.

Ziegler estimated that 10 percent of the hay made in Alberta is wrapped as haylage.

Producers who dry down feed and harvest as hay bales should ensure bales are stored properly.

Dried bales should be moved off the field immediately and placed under cover, either in a hay shed or under a tarp.

CAsE iHCase IH haying systems share their forage

platform with well-known haymaker New Holland.

The wide range of horsepower choices and attachments make the Case IH brand a popu-lar choice with producers looking for a hay unit that doubles as a home for the draper header during grain harvest.

The HDX sickle headers have a floating auger that resists plugging in heavy crops.

MAssEy FERGusoN HEsstoN / CHALLENGER

AGCO now has two brands of haymaking equipment, Massey and Challenger. Both are based on the well-known Hesston platform. From 85 horsepower to 220, with two distinct frame systems, the company provides Susi, Cummins and Cat engine power depending on the brand, size and model year of the machines. Drivelines, chassis and hay headers are common to both lines, with the choice for producers being based on dealers and brand names. The WR series offers higher field and transport speeds and more power than the SP lineup.

John Deere’s 8 series round balers offer bale size control from the cab via the Baletrack controller. The balers offer toughened pickup teeth and an extra wide feeder for hay-ing in tough conditions. Double twin arms speed up wrap-ping time. The Cover Edge bale wrap system can wrap a bale in as little at six seconds.

KRoNEThe only company covered

in Techs & Specs that uses a slat and chain system versus the typical belt design in their round balers. The aggressive slat design on two continuously rotating chains starts and grows bales even in dry conditions, such as early season wheat straw and pasture hay or when bales get heavy. It also has no starter roller, opting for a spiral-ing roller with scrapers to get the material into play. The slat chain is hydraulically tensioned.

CHALLENGERAGCO offers its Challenger branded round balers to producers looking

for the reliability and heritage of the Hesston machines with the option of dealing with their existing Challenger dealer. The RB line has dual twine tubes for fast tying once the hay has been formed in the vertical, variable bale chamber. The automatic 463A and 563A models use a self-contained hydraulic system. The belt tension system keeps belts tight during bale ejection, preventing belt crossing. Four hydraulic cylinders provide belt tension control for dense bale forming, critical in large bale making.

CAsE iHThe two large square balers from CNH under the Case IH brand are

the LB333 and the LB433. The 333 has four knotters, while the 433 uses six. Knotter fans are

controlled from the cab along with bale density and the constant moni-toring of twine movement to prevent mis-ties. The system also tracks flakes per bale and the central greasing system’s operation and the number of bales. An optional bale length kit allows bale length to be set from the tractor.

The new balers have wider opening bale chambers, improving ejection. Two ejection levers handle bale ejec-tion, one kicks out the rear-most bale at the end of the field, while the other pushes the most recently finished out of the bale chamber at the end of the field or season.

All the details, all the time.

CHALLENGERAGCO’s big square baler heritage dates back

more than 30 years. The Hesston brand is well known in haymaking circles and the LB B balers are a product of that lineage. Faster plunger speeds in the new models boost production. Auto-lubed knotter blowers are a standard feature on the machines, keep-ing the double knotters clear of debris. The machines are ISO compatible, so tractors of any make with ISOBUS monitors can make use of that technology.

MAssEy FERGusoN HEsstoNHesston began making big square bales more than 30 years ago. The

three platforms are a 3x3, 4x3 and 4x4 foot configurations. The new 21 series moves the pickup from spring loaded floatation to

an adjustable torsion bar system. Hydraulic pickup lift is standard. The pre-compression bale chamber builds bale flakes independent

of windrow size or machine travel speed, providing consistently built bales with uniform density.

Models 2190 and 2170 have six knotters, while the 2150 has four. Onboard hydraulics run and lubricate the knotter fan system.

The 2170, 2190 offer optional flat bale chute kits, while all offer a bale weight and length kit.

Direct Seeding Into SodGreg Selzler owns a mixed farming operation

near Mayerthorpe, Alta. He used Technotill in 2010 to direct seed cereals and rye into hay land, pasture, cereal and canola stubble elds.

Selzler’s operation includes a cow-calf herd, commercial hay sales and cereal crops. His land is classi ed as grey wooded soil but includes areas of peat, sandy loam, heavy clay, gumbo and rocks. Normal rainfall is 14-16 inches but the spring of 2010 was dry, and rainfall during the growing season was below average.

When Selzler considers seeding equipment, he has a number of priorities.

“I want rapid, even germination in the spring so the crop is evenly ripened for harvest. Being able to direct seed into hay land and pasture is essential for my operation to ef ciently manage our crop rotation, reduce seeding costs and manpower requirements, and maximize returns for our cattle operation. And, I want a smooth eld nish.

“In the longer term, I want to improve the soil quality on my farm. Reducing tillage is one strategy to accomplish that goal.”

In April 2010, Selzler installed the Technotill Seeding System on his heavy duty Flexicoil 800 air seeder. He chose the knock-on opener with Bourgault Tillage Tools 3/4 inch knife to direct seed into sod.

While seeding his own land and doing custom seeding for neighbours, he tried a number of applications with his new equipment:

Direct seeding hay land sprayed in fall 2009; Direct seeding hay and pasture sprayed in

spring 2010;

Late summer direct seeding hay land sprayed after harvesting a second cut;

Seeding newly broken land; Pasture rejuvenation; Late summer seeding to extend grazing

options for cattle; and Seeding into cereal and canola stubble. “Despite extremely dry conditions this spring,

germination across all the seeded acreage was even and rapid. It took fewer hours to seed the crop. I don’t miss all those extra operations we used to do to get sod elds ready to seed.

“Spraying hay land in the fall is certainly a better practice because there is more time for plants to decompose before seeding. However, crop direct seeded into newly sprayed sod emerged well.

“Generally, there was minimal disturbance and the sod is rotting down already. Fescue didn’t rip into large lumps. Some elds were rolled, with no apparent effect on emergence. It seems like the roller runs on the edges of the furrow and doesn’t compress extra soil over the seed row.

“Rejuvenating pasture and late summer/fall seeding to extend the grazing season for our cattle is a real advantage for our operation.

“Technotill was a cost effective retro t for my seeding equipment. It’s a simple system that did the job for me in all kinds of conditions. I’m happy with my choice.”

KRoNEKrone builds a variety of large square balers. A 3x3 foot baler to the

unique 1270 Multibale, which builds nine small 47x27.5 inch bales and then packages them into on large bale up to 106 inches long. The 1290 model is the company’s 3x4 baler.

The new pickup system on the Big Pack balers eliminates the cam from the design, reducing moving parts and maintenance. A rolling crop guide pushes the forage onto the tines, reducing lumps in the feeding.

A pair of force sensors monitor the pressure applied by the bale plunger and compares this to the desired bale density. The system adjusts the pressure on the bale chamber doors accordingly.
