Getting in the game!
As some of you all may know by
now, I am a huge soccer fan, and
an even bigger fan of the grandest
soccer tournament in the world:
The World Cup. I grew up playing
competitive soccer, so watching
soccer is an easy thing for me, and
speaking the language of soccer
comes natural to me. I realize though that soccer is not
predominately a natural sport for many Americans since
it is not on TV regularly and it is not as popular as
basketball, baseball, or football. But nonetheless, I love
soccer and I love the World Cup.
In an effort to introduce more of my friends to the joy of
the World Cup I started a tournament bracket challenge
group (similarly to the March Madness brackets we see
in college basketball). Several of my friends joined in,
but most did not. Many of my friends said, “I don’t know
anything about soccer, and so I’m going to pass this
time.” I respectfully accepted their declines, but in my
heart I had hoped they would have at least tried- after all
they all know about sports (points, wins, losses,
tournaments, etc.).
In the 10th chapter of Matthew’s gospel, Jesus summons
his 12 disciples- common folk more acquainted with fish
and taxes and business than with evangelism and
healing and casting out demons. But nonetheless they
took up Jesus’ charge.
In this chapter Jesus prepares his disciples for what they
will face out in the mission field: persecution, rejection,
criminal trials and so on. But they would also heal the
sick, teach forgiveness, feed the hungry, and proclaim
good news. These experiences may not have been
natural everyday events in the lives of these disciples,
but they were willing to get in the game and go for it.
Jesus had taught them and shown them what the good
news was all about and now they were equipped to do it
for themselves.
As I mentioned last month, we are working on putting
together a ministry of welcome and hospitality here at
Christ Church. This ministry will be particularly geared
toward welcoming first time visitors. One step in taking
the good news of Jesus Christ out of our doors is to
meet Jesus when he comes to our doors in the face of
our visitors.
Evangelism can sometimes be a language that many of
us feel we don’t know very well or that doesn’t come
natural for us. But what does come natural to us is
knowing about our own homes and our own customs
and cultures. In a ministry of welcome and hospitality
we are in essence sharing our church home, customs,
and culture. This we can speak to, this is a language
that we all know. It begins first in knowing ourselves,
and being willing to share that with others. And it
doesn’t end there, but only begins. Once we share
ourselves, we learn also to let others share themselves
with us. The picture I hope you are getting here is that it
is about building relationships: a very natural process
that we do in nearly every facet of our lives.
This month on Sunday July 27th
I invite those of you
interested in sharing in this new ministry of welcome and
hospitality to join me in a forum in Moore Hall from 9:00-
9:45 am. In this forum we will discuss in detail will take
shape and how you can get involved. I hope you will
consider joining us and getting in the game!

Needed CEC Photographers
We would like to spruce up The Window with a few more
pictures of all the things going on at
Christ Church. If you find yourself in a
CEC group and no one is taking pictures, pull
out that cell phone and take a few yourself. Send them
to [email protected]. I may not be able to use all of
them, but will have a much more representative idea of
all that is available to be a part of at CEC. And a big
thank you goes to those of you who have already
done so this month.
The Bible says… The kingdom of God is like:
Hidden treasure, leaven, a householder
who brings out of his treasure what is new and
what is old, a mustard seed.
MAYBE, the kingdom of our Lord is ALSO like:
providing for the youngest of God's creations
when you provide for yourself.
Many people are doing so every time they use a Kroger
Cares Gift Card bought in the name of the church.
You, too, may help if you so choose. You may sign up in
the office or on the sign up board in the gathering area.
Thank you to those who have purchased cards. You are
helping to send kids to our beautiful All Saints camp.
(Please remember to reload them)
Behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.
Luke 17:21
Thank You Good People! Many thanks to all who have saved and donated
aluminum cans to the CEC All Saints Camp Scholarship
Fund. Your continuing good stewardship is helping
support God's creations! For others who would like to
help there is a large can in the CEC kitchen for your
contributions.

Spotlight on Outreach
Relay for Life
Look who participated on the Christ Church 2014-Relay for Life Christ church
Team. It looks like they had a great time while working for a worthy cause. Many thanks go to Karen Crabtree
who did an amazing job with our booth.
Help Ministry Thanks to the many CEC parishioners who continue to support the "HELP MINISTRY", we have been able to help an average of 12 families per month this year with their utility bills. Many of these people were down to their last day before having their electricity cut off because they could not pay the entire bill. The Help Ministry team continues to be very diligent in spending "your" money. We follow the following guidelines carefully: we help an applicant only once per year; we help only Warren County residents; we require a government issued ID (driver’s license) and a social security number which matches the name on the utility bill. We count on your continued support of this important Outreach Ministry
The Sack Lunch Ministry
Due to a shortfall in donations, the Sack Lunch Ministry is currently suspended. A meeting to discuss other
options for this program is scheduled for Sunday, August 24 at 9 a.m. in the conference room. Please
contact Mary Travelsted at 270-781-5282 for information.

Bible Study for all ages
Fr. Ben will facilitate a summer
Bible study for anyone interested in
attending. This class is open to all
ages, and will pay special attention
to exploring God’s word in a family
style atmosphere. You may bring your own Bible or
borrow one from the church. The class will meet
Sundays 9:00-9:45 am in the Conference Room.
Lay persons face the difficult and often subtle task of
interpreting the richness of the church’s faith in a
complex and confusing world. They need a theological
education which supports their faith and also teaches
them to express that faith in day-to-day events.
The EfM program does not evaluate or recommend
individuals for ordination. Many people think that one
must be ordained in order to be “a minister”. The fact is
that all baptized Christians are called to be active
participants in the church’s total ministry. This TOTAL
MINISTRY is nothing less than the exercise of the
church’s vocation to continue the ministry of Jesus. He
reconciled the world to God. We are called to incarnate
that reconciliation in our own time and in our own place
through worship, service to others, and by proclamation
of God’s Word to all people.
The seminar group is the nucleus of EfM. A group
consists of 6-12 participants and a trained mentor who
meet weekly over the course of a nine-month

academic year. The meetings are usually from 2 ½ to 3
hours in length. Through study, prayer and reflection,
EfM groups move toward a new understanding of the
fullness of God’s kingdom. Participants are given
weekly assignments to study with the help of resource
guides. Through discussion and guided reflection, the
seminars furnish an opportunity to deepen
understanding of the reading materials. The seminar is
supported by a life of prayer and regular worship.
EfM will resume at Christ Church in late August. If you
