  • PRESIDENTS NOTES Here we are in October already, and so many people have been unwell with colds and viruses - we wish them a speedy recovery as some of these hang around for weeks! Don’t know about your club but our numbers have been down, hopefully as the weather warms the members will return. Time is very close for the country forum at Safety Bay; please make every effort to attend as Christine and her committee have worked very hard to make the day a success. Next year Federation will be 50 years old and we will be having a BIG celebration and the committee will be working on a Special Day for all. The newsletter has been late and not yet on the website but please understand that things come up in our lives that we have no control over and Jo (our editor) has had two bereavements close together and our thoughts are with her. At this time of the year the office is open Mon-Wed-Fridays only so please ring first to make sure someone is there to greet you as our committee members have been sick too.

We have 2 new clubs opening. Vanessa Dos Santos in KARRATHA and Fleur Bell in KATANNING.

We will support and help these ladies all we can and wish them every success. It is never easy to start a new club –it is a great challenge. Vanessa was a member at Forrestfield and lost 36 kgs. so she can share her journey with her club! If you are sending emails to the office make sure that you add the name your club please so we know who you are. We would like to extend a belated welcome to a new committee member with apologies-Rhonda Donaldson from Cannington club has joined us and I am sure this young lady will be an asset. Till next time. Aileen

  • BUSSELTON WASPS I'm stuck for news this month. Only been one notable event and that was the return of Wendy from her holiday. Good to have her back too, more laughs. Can't believe the next lot of holidays are here so quickly.

Mums will have to have bottomless purses for the Royal Show and side show alley. Oh the memories of heat, flies, noise and tired children. The spilling of overfilled popcorn beakers, squashed sandwiches, headaches & sticky fairy floss and all the accompanying delights. Now it's up to my 6 offspring to provide such delights for their families.

We have started the WWF Spring competition, so far so good. Don't know at this stage if we will continue on through the school holidays. It will be up to the meeting tonight. Country Forum time coming up too, tonight will fix our numbers and then a cheque can be sent off to WWF. Found these couple of puns recently. "She was only a whisky maker, but he loved her still" and "No matter how far you push the envelope, it'll still be stationary" This one will tickle your fancy..... "Someone sent me an email about using vodka for cleaning around the house. It worked.....the more vodka I drank; the cleaner the house looked" Keep trying to win the scales over to your side. It does get hard sometimes. If you feel you aren't winning give a thought to all the peoples around the world suffering natural disasters and their consequences. We are so lucky to be able to choose whether or when we eat. Keep focused, eat what you need, not what you want! That's about all for now, Kind regards, Valerie (Hon sec)

  • MAYLANDS WEIGHT WATCHERS Congratulations to two (2) of our members who have recently graduated. They are Lyn Matthews with a 23.7kg loss and Collette Freeman with a 10kg loss. Lyn was also our Slimmer of the Year & she came second in the Federation Slimmer of the Year. Great effort by both ladies.

The graduation lunch was enjoyed by all. Our AGM was held in June with Cynthia Baxter becoming our President, Margaret Saunders, Secretary & Sue Ennis, Treasurer. Life memberships were awarded to Coral Long & Irene Snow, with thanks to the committee for that honour. Unfortunately, we have had to move from our premises due to the difficulty with street parking. The club has been at the Old Peninsular Hotel in Maylands for thirty two (32) years. Many members will remember that the Federation had their office in that building. We have only moved a little way up the road with no stress with parking.

One of our former members, Val Reeves recently passed away after a long illness. Condolences to her daughters Lyn & Sheryl, who are also members .

We also have several members with serious ill health, so our support & best wishes go out to them. Thank you & Best regards Sue Ennis

  • BELMONT WEIGHT WATCHERS It’s been very pleasing to see the club chart each week as there are many more blue (loss) weeks than the dreaded red weight gain. Quite a few members continue to do well with 4-week loss awards going to Cath, Linda C, Sue, Linda A and Ros T-B. All our grads are maintaining as well. Great work everyone!

We celebrated the birthdays of Mary, Wendy, Coral and Anne C. Congratulations and best wishes to Julie on her engagement.

At some point in your weight loss journey you’ve probably seen recipes for the “Heart Foundation” soup diet. Basically this is a tomato-based vegetable soup supposed to promote weight loss. I’d seen the recipe and thought it didn’t sound very nice but we had a recent taste test it was surprisingly good. Basic Fat Burning Soup 2 large cans crushed tomatoes 2 litres beef stock 2 packets dry Continental Vegetable Soup mix 1 bunch of celery 1 bunch spring onions or 2 large onions 1 bunch celery 2 cans green beans 1 kilo carrots 2 green or red capsicums Cut veggies in small to medium pieces. Add salt and pepper and stir well. Boil rapidly for 10 minutes then simmer until vegetables are tender. Add water if necessary. The soup can be eaten any time you’re hungry. The soup was very tasty but I found it quite salty so I’d advise care if this is a concern. Maggie

  • BYFORD DAYTIME WEIGHT WATCHERS Hi all It looks like winter has nearly finished, and although we desperately needed the rain it is so nice to have some warm sunny weather. The wild flowers are looking lovely and I do enjoy watching the birds in my back garden play ing in the grevillea bushes. • SPRING TIME TIPS - Column by Annette Sym You can certainly feel that spring is in the air with warm days and cool nights, thankfully the coldest part of the year is behind us. Before we know it, we will be heading to the beach on weekends and Christmas will be on our doorstep. With winter behind us it’s a great time to do a spring clean of our house and don’t forget the pantry and fridge. If your healthy eating plan went off track during the colder months you may also need to do a spring clean of your mindset and shift your focus onto slimming down for summer.

It’s time to face the music. Here are three things to do now:

    • Step on the scales and write down the number • Try on your favourite summer outfit from last year and see how it fits. Facing reality now before

summer hits is a great way to avoid having nothing that fits. • Write a food diary for a week and identify any problem foods and drinks.

Now that you have faced the reality of where you’re at, read my 8 tips to get you back to good health:

    1. Clean out your pantry and fridge. Discard all foods that are not helping you to be the healthy person you want to be.

    2. Plan ahead. Write a menu plan and use it to write your shopping list for the week. 3. Forget stodgy stews, choose grilled meat or fish. Light the barbeque for some lean cooking as

grilling over an open flame helps allow the fat to escape and is so much healthier. 4. Enjoy seasonal fruits. Lady William apples, strawberries, grapefruit, lemons, mandarins, melons,

blood or Seville oranges, as well as papaya, pawpaw and pineapples will be really sweet. 5. Include lots of seasonal vegetables and salads. Artichokes, Asian greens, asparagus, green beans,

beetroot, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, lettuce, mushrooms, peas, potatoes, silverbeet and spinach are all in season now.

    6. Include two fish meals each week. Fish is loaded with omega 3’s and low in fat; enjoy fresh fish with tasty sauces or marinate in some garlic and lemon before pan frying in a little low fat margarine.

    7. Schedule in some exercise. If exercise has gone by the wayside over winter, it’s time to start moving again.

    8. Check your water intake. If you have been a bit slack with your water intake over winter then now is the perfect time to get back to the routine of having eight glasses of water a day.

Don’t wait another day or another week. Starting now means you will be ready for summer, so spring into action NOW!

We look forward to your continued support in selling these raffle tickets books.

INSURANCE COVER FOR CLUB MEMBERS This was a big discussion at the Federation A.G.M. with clubs concerns that their members were not covered by the PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE POLICY. We do know that one club has taken their own Personal Accident Insurance Policy to cover their members which is very expensive. I have made inquiries with our Insurance Broker regarding what it would cost to take out a Personal Accident Insurance Cover for all club members. What was sent back to me was as follows only based on 300 people. $30,000/300 - $15.00 per person (club member) $50,000/$50 - $25.00 per person (club member) $75,000/$750 - $37.00 per person (club member) $100,000/$1000 - $50.00 per person (club member)

  • The Product Disclosure Statement which our Insurance Broker provided & states full details on the cover provided, did very clearly state once a member turned 70 years of age they were not covered. At our recent Federation committee meeting it was decided that if the clubs wish to take out their own Personal Accident Insurance Policy it was the way to go. It is far too complicated for the Federation to deal with this. I will give you details of our Insurance Broker and another Insurance Broker who clubs can contact if they wish to pursue this. Weight Watchers Federation's Insurance Broker JA Insurance Services Unit 2a 152 Balcatta 6914 Brett Wrightson Phone: 9240 5777 or mobile 0413 870 676 Another Insurance was given to me: LOCAL COMMUNITY INSURANCE SERVICES (Not for Profit Clubs) 1300 853 800 I believe they are in Adelaide. Check this one out on the Web site. Hopefully this will help all the clubs. I will say this again the PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE POLICY that clubs take out DO-NOT COVER CLUB MEMBERS. But it is essential for most clubs to take this policy out, because of where the clubs hold there club meetings they must have this cover. In particular all Councils or Shires require this policy. This policy only covers a new potential member who has not joined your club, visitors and guest speakers.

  • GREENWOOD WEIGHT WATCHERS Our club has been a little quiet for a few weeks as there are nine of our members on holiday. Their travels are taking them on some great journeys, Canada, England, Europe, Phuket and one in WA. We’ve had one of our cooking nights recently, a member for many years Jeanette Frasier kindly gave us demonstration making a batch of healthy Sausage Rolls ingredients for the filling I recall were, onions, eggs, oats, cashews, soy sauce and bread crumbs, wrapped in filo pastry. Lucky for Jeanette she had made some samples, as she had a problem with her processor. Full recipe at: https://www.sanitarium.com.au/Recipes/A-Z/Country-cottage-rolls Jeanette like our President Pauline is inspiring members with her weight loss as you can see in the photograph attached. “She’s looking great”. Keep it up Jeanette!! Spring is with us and usually lifts our spirits and boosts on to jump the weight watchers “Merry Go Round” let’s hope we can stay on for longer this year. Good Luck! Regards Susan Wetton

  • A family was walking in store when the father sees a robot. The tag says that the robot slaps anyone who lies. Intrigued, the man buys it and tests it at the dinner table.

“So son, where were you after school today?” the dad asks, the robot next to him.

“Oh, I was at the library studying for my test.” The robot slaps the son.

“Okay, okay, I was at a friend’s house watching something.” the son admits.

“What were you watching?” the father asks.

“Cartoons,” he says. The robot slaps the son’s face.

“Alright, I’m sorry, I was watching dirty movies” he confesses.

The father frowns at the son. “I’m disappointed in you. When I was your age, I never watched or even thought about watching that type of thing.” The robot slaps the father hard.

The mother, who was watching all this, laughed. “Well, he certainly is your son.” The robot then slaps the mother
