A senior citizen drove his brand newCorvette convertible out of the deal-ership.Taking off down the road, he pushedit to 80 kph, enjoying the wind blow-ing through what little hair he hadleft. "Amazing," he thought as heflew down the road, pushing the ped-al even more.Looking in his rear view mirror, hesaw a Garda car, blue lights flashingand siren blaring. He floored it to100 kph, then 110, then 120.Suddenly he thought, "What am Idoing? I'm too old for this!" and

pulled over to await the Garda's ar-rival.Pulling in behind him, the Garda gotout of his vehicle and walked up tothe Corvette. He looked at his watch, then said, "Sir, my shift ends in 30minutes. Today is Friday. If you cangive me a new reason for speeding--areason I've never before heard--I'll letyou go."The old gentleman paused then said:"Three years ago, my wife ran offwith a Garda. I thought you werebringing her back."

"Have a good day, Sir," replied theGarda.

On opening his new store, a man re-ceived a bouquet of flowers. He be-came dismayed on reading theenclosed card, that it expressed"Deepest Sympathy".While puzzling over the message, histelephone rang. It was the florist, apologizing for having sent thewrong card."Oh, it's alright." said the storekeep-er. "I'm a businessman and I under-stand how these things can happen.""But," added the florist, "I acciden-tally sent your card to a funeral par-ty.""Well, what did it say?" ask thestorekeeper."'Congratulations on your new loca-tion'." was the reply.

Dan was a single guy living at homewith his father and working in thefamily business. When he found out he was going toinherit a fortune when his sickly fa-ther died, he decided he needed tofind a wife with whom to share hisfortune. One evening, at an investment meet-ing, he spotted the most beautifulwoman he had ever seen. Her natural beauty took his breathaway."I may look like just an ordinaryguy," he said to her, "but in just a

few years, my father will die and Iwill inherit €200 million."Impressed, the woman asked for hisbusiness card and three days later, she became his stepmother.Women are so much better at finan-cial planning than men.

The teenager lost a contact lens whileplaying basketball in his driveway. After a fruitless search, he told hismother the lens was nowhere to befound.Undaunted, she went outside and in afew minutes, returned with the lensin her hand."How did you manage to find it,Mom?" the teenager asked."We weren't looking for the samething," she replied."You were looking for a small pieceof plastic. I was looking for €150."

In the middle of an argument a mansaid to his wife, "I don't know howyou can be so stupid and so beautifulall at the same time!"The wife responded calmly, "Allowme to explain...the good Lord mademe beautiful so you would be attract-ed to me; and he made me stupid so Iwould be attracted to you!"

How is it that one match can start a forest fire, but it takes awhole box of matches to start a campfire? Christy Whitehead

Your Debs Night is one of the eve-nings you will remember for the restof your life. There are many thingsyou can do that will make theevening an especially enjoyable one.Of course everyone's idea of fun isdifferent, so each of you will haveslightly different needs, but there aresome concerns and ideas that are rel-atively universal.

How much will it cost?

The cost of Debs Night can varygreatly but you don't have to spend afortune to have a good time if youplan ahead and make intelligentchoices. Just be sure that when youdecide to spend money on a particu-lar item the money spent is worth itto you. It is your money and yournight; choose wisely. The followingis a list of items that will probably bepart of your evening's expenses:

Ticket

This will vary from school to school. If your Debs ticket is expensive youand your date may want to considersplitting the cost of the tickets.

Evening Gown

The style of evening gowns variestremendously from year to year, andfrom school to school. Some yearseveryone will wear cocktail-lengthdresses, and other years long dresseswill be the rage. If you aren't surewhat you want, look in magazinesand shops. Give yourself a lot oftime to decide what type of dress youwant.

The safer way to get a dress for theevening would be by shoppingaround. There are many stores thatsell evening gowns. Some even spe-cialize in them. Try on every dressthat you think might work for you.Dresses usually look very differenton you than they do on the hanger. Ifyou don't try it on, you may elimi-nate a dress on the rack that looksgreat on you--so take your time.

The amount of money you spend willbe up to you. Be a smart shopper.Maybe even one of your friends willlet you borrow a dress! If that works, you will have saved a lot of moneyyou could spend on something elsefor your evening.Photographs

There will probably be a photogra-pher at the Debs ready to take posedcouple and group shots. These pic-ture packages can often cost a lot ofmoney, so get a price list from theorganisers at school before thatevening so that you will know howmuch money you will need to havefor this. Your parents and relativesmay want copies, so calculate thoseneeds into your picture order. Thesephotographs will probably be a keep-sake for years to come.

You may also consider taking infor-mal shots of yourself and friendsthroughout the evening with yourown camera. These photos may turnout to be your favourite remembranc-es from your Debs night.

Limousine

A limousine is an optional extra foryour Debs night. It can be great fun

With over 4000 schools around thecountry opening their doors nextmonth for the start of a new schoolyear, children and parents are beingreminded of dangers associatedwith the return to school and to takethe necessary precautions. MauriceBuckley, CEO, NSAI (National Stan-dards Authority of Ireland), saysthere are a number of safety issuesthat parents need to be aware of.“The start of a new school year canmake many parents nervous as theywill not be able to keep as close aneye on their children as they wereduring the holidays. As Ireland’s offi-cial standards body, NSAI aims toinspire consumer confidence and tohelp protect the public. The followingsafety tips will help ensure you andyour kids have a safe return toschool.”

1 Check the weight of school bags. The bag should not be more than 15percent of the child’s bodyweight. Abackpack with two straps that goover the shoulders can help distrib-ute this weight evenly. The bagshould be packed so that heavieritems are closer to the back of the

backpack, next to the body, and allcompartments are used. Unneces-sary items, such as text books onlyused on certain days should eitherbe left at home or in a school locker.

2. Check uniform length. Although itis always wise to choose a uniformsize that allows for a child’s growthduring the school year, uniforms thatare especially long can make chil-dren more susceptible to trippingand falling. Adjust the uniform sothat it does not drag on the groundand trip the child up.

3. Check the label on child’s carseats. The return to school willmean the return to the “school run”for many families. As well as makingsure school children are properlyseat belted, parents should makesure that car seats for younger chil-dren comply with the Europeanstandard requirement (UN-ECER44.04). The label attached to theseat must contain three essentialitems:• The letter ‘E’ followed by a num-ber. This number indicates the Euro-

pean approval authority whichgranted the child seat approval.• The words ISOFIX or Universal.• A weight capacity that does notexceed the weight of the child. Forexample 0-13kg is suitable for a newborn child.

Maurice Buckley, CEO, said“Whether making the regular ‘schoolrun’ or playing sport for the school

team, consumers are protected byNSAI standards that ensure safetyand reduce injuries. By exercisingcaution and a little common-sense,families can enjoy a safe schoolyear.”For more information on safety andaccident prevention, visitwww.nsai.ie.

for two or three couples to go to-gether in a limo. Just be sure thatyou want to do this and budget ac-cordingly. If you split the cost be-tween a group, it can be great fun.You probably won’t get one againuntil your wedding! So you may aswell enjoy it.

Hair / Nails / Make-Up

Often girls have one or all three ofthese items done professionally forDebs Night. It is strictly a matter ofpersonal taste, and up to you as towhich, if any of these, you wouldlike to have done for you. There areBeauty Salons that will do all three,

or you could schedule appoint-ments at different places for eachservice. Again, look in magazinesand on television to get an idea asto what is in style and what youlike. Talk to your friends to seewhat they are doing, and then de-cide what you want to do.

Drink and drugs.

There is no point in going to all thetrouble to look your best to ruin itall by getting sick all over your selfor your friends or falling down in adrunken stupor. Its not attractive, it’splain ugly! If you must drink, stayoff the shots, know your limits, pace

your self, drink water or a soft drinkevery few drinks. Drugs? Don’t evenbother. Apart from the health risks

you will enjoy yourself much betterwithout them.

Lorrha Lughnasa

During the twelfth and thirteenth cen-tury, the Anglo-Normans were verykeen to take over the west of Irelandbut to do this they had to cross theShannon river. Despite several at-tempts, not one was successful and asa result they were never able to settlein the west. The Anglo-Normanswere also in danger of being attackedfrom across the Shannon and so theybuilt a long line of castles and tower-houses along the eastern bank. AnAnglo-Norman family named DeCougan, constructed Redwood Castlearound 1210. It was originally twostories tall with the entrance on thesecond floor, accessible by a retract-able ladder. This was a security mea-sure widely used in those days. In1350, the castle was granted to theO'Kennedy family after it was vacat-ed by the De Cougans. TheO'Kennedy's added more floors to theCastle. The castle was then turnedover to their chief Bardic family, theMac Egans. Bardic families hadmany responsibilities, including thoseof advisors, administrators, lawyers, musicians, poets, physicians and am-bassadors. The Mac Egans of Red-wood, however, specialized in onesubject, the ancient Irish Brehon Lawand since they served several lords

and chieftains, and very few otherpeople practiced and studied BrehonLaw, they virtually had the monopo-ly. They founded a school of historyand law at Redwood which attractedsome of the foremost thinkers in thecountry, including Michael O'Cleary, who with a team of historians, com-piled the famous Annals of the FourMasters, which recorded Irish historyup to the early seventeenth century.

During the Cromwellian invasion ofIreland, the castle was taken over byCromwell's troops who burnt itdown, leaving only the 11 foot stonewalls and the spiral staircase stand-ing. For the next three hundredyears it remained a ruin until a farmerin the early 1900's cut a doorwaythrough the stone walls on theground level to house a horse. In1972, Michael Egan, a lawyer fromCastlebar, Co. Mayo, bought it, andout of his own pockets, restored thecastle to its former glory.

Redwood Castle is open to the publicuntil Sunday 29th August. There areguided tours around the Castle andbeing one of the main historical at-tractions of the Midlands, it is wellworth the visit.

TIPP QUALIFY FOR GAA HURL-ING CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINAL

Congratulations to the Tipperary se-nior hurling panel, the team manage-ment and backroom team on theirgreat victory over Galway in Sunday’stitantic, nail-biting cliffhanger inCroke Park. Great credit is due to bothteams for magnificent and courageousperformances that combined all that isbest in hurling from amazing skill tofierce determination to elementarymistakes to give us one of the mostthrilling contests of recent years. While it is hard not to feel sorry forGalway, too often Tipp have lost theseepic games so it is wonderful to havecome out on top by that solitary pointon a scoreline of 3-17 to 3-16. Thereis no time to rest on the laurels of thisvictory because worthy Munsterchampions, Waterford now await Tip-perary in the All Ireland semi-final onAugust 15th. Sunday’s win was thefirst time Tipp defeated Galway in anAll Ireland quarter final having losttheir two previous encounters at thisstage in 2000 and 2005. The characterand commitment of the Tipperaryplayers really shone through on Sun-day and the pride, honesty, workrateand passion of these players are be-yond reproach. We are fortunate tohave them representing our county.Well done to all concerned and welook forward to big support from Tip-perary at the semi-final.

North Tipperary Leader Partnership LtdBack to Education InitiativeProgramme (Community Strand)

Two Tipperary men are undertaking adrive of a lifetime through at least 8countries culminating in a handover ofvehicles and supplies to the belea-guered people of Gaza. This dauntingtask of over 5000 KM will take at least5 weeks, with the lads sleeping in thevan that they are driving. This humani-tarian journey was the brainchild of JoeGilmartin who was moved to action bythe recent attempts by sea to lift theIsraeli siege and supply much neededaid to Gaza. Speaking at the launch ofTipp2Gaza in the Hibernian Inn inNenagh on Friday night, local Man Joesaid ‘I always knew of the plight of thepeople of Gaza but the Israeli actionswith the recent flotilla, highlighted forme, that something had to be done’.

Joe set up a committee and started fundraising with the aim of driving a vanload of medical supplies to Gaza. Con-sequently Tipp2Gaza was born, whounder the auspices of Viva Palestina ,will participate in a 500 plus vehicleconvoy through Europe and the MiddleEast to bring much needed medicalsupplies and ambulances to Gaza. Therepresentative for Tipp2Gaza, Joe Gil-martin, said that this is a chance of thepeople of Tipperary to get actively in-volved by sending a medical van withsupplies directly to Gaza. Tipp2Gaza isnon-political and welcomes everyonewho genuinely has an interest in allevi-ating this intolerable situation in Gaza.

Tipp2Gaza is currently fund raising sothat the required vehicle and suppliescan be provided solely by donationsfrom County Tipperary and as this isdirect action, every cent raised goesstraight to Gaza. When the van arrivesin Gaza the keys will handed over torelevant authorities, as will the medicalequipment, educational supplies andthe wherewithal to rebuild a destroyedcommunity center, a school for or-phans and to construct a maternity fa-cility in Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza.

Joe has asked the people of Tipperaryto dig deep, following on the premier'scounties long tradition of humanitarianrelief work, and to support this venturewholeheartedly. Tipp2Gaza are not on-ly looking for monetary donations butpeople’s time to help with this noblecause.' Time is against us' cautionedJoe, 'as the convoy is leaving on the18th September from London' . Whenasked if the journey daunted him Joereplied that ‘well six weeks in a vanwith one other person will probably betough but sure the end result will beworth it’.

If you want to donate, please do on ourwebsite www.tipp2gaza.com or textPTW TIPP to 57800 to donate €2.50 toour ambulance to Gaza fund.If you want to contact tipp2gaza,please phone Joe at 0872055361 oremail [email protected]

• With cumulative European salesof Prius topping the 100,000 markin May 2008, the figure has dou-bled to 200,000 in just two years

• Over three generations, Priusachieves 26% CO2 emissions re-duction, 23% fall in fuel con-sumption and 30% increase inpower

• Hybrid Synergy Drive generatesrecord-low CO2 emissions, al-most no particulates (PM) andsignificantly lower NOX emis-sions than any conventional dieselpowertrain

• Full hybrid technology featureselectric driving mode with zeroCO2, NOX and PM emissions

• Proven reliability and outstandingvalue for money with low runningand maintenance costs

Finding increasing acceptance as amainstream model, the full hybridPrius celebrates the major milestone ofits first decade on the European marketwith a dramatic acceleration in salesperformance.

With cumulative European sales ofPrius topping the 100,000 mark in May2008, the figure has now doubled to200,000 in just two years. Global salesof Prius are expected to exceed 2 mil-lion units by the autumn of 2010.

Launched in Japan in 1997, the firstgeneration Prius became the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle available onthe European market in 2000.Launched in Ireland in 2001, there arenow over 2,200 Prius on Irish roads.

Voted Car of the Year by European,Japanese and American motoring jour-nalists, the Prius has won numeroushighly prestigious awards. Its globallyrecognised Hybrid Synergy Drive® isone of the most successful powertrainsin the history of the International En-gine of the Year awards, with a total of11 titles to date.

Prius has been consistently ahead of itstime in addressing environmental is-sues, leading the field in the pursuit ofimproved fuel efficiency and a reduc-tion in CO2, NOX and particulateemissions. The last decade has wit-nessed a fall in the fuel consumption ofits Hybrid Synergy Drive® powertrainof more than 23% and a reduction inCO2 emissions of almost 26% from120 g/km to just 89 g/km. Yet systempower has simultaneously increased by30%.

Three generations of Prius have notonly seen significant improvements tosuccessive evolutions of its HybridSynergy Drive® powertrain, but also amarked change in customer percep-tions of full hybrid technology.

First generation Prius owners werewon over by the car’s unique conceptand technological innovation. Secondgeneration owners are enthusiastic ear-ly adopters of niche technologies, re-maining passionate about the Priusproduct concept regardless of the opin-ions of others. Third generation cus-tomers, however, recognise the Prius asa true mainstream vehicle with on-roadperformance and dynamic abilitieswhich now bear comparison with anyD segment competitor.

Representing the ultimate synergy ofhigh technology and environmentally-conscientious forward thinking in pow-ertrain design, Toyota’s Hybrid Syner-gy Drive® equips the Prius with fullhybrid capability, operating in petroland electric modes alone, as well as acombination of both.

Through the incorporation of an elec-tric-only drive mode unique to full hy-brid technology, the Prius addressesnot only CO2 emissions, but also airquality. Even operating in normal drivemode, the Prius generates significantlylower NOX emissions than any compa-rable diesel engined vehicle. With ve-hicle range dictated by battery charge, the EV drive mode allows for urbandriving at speeds of up to 45 km/h, for

up to two kilometres, with minimalnoise and zero CO2, NOX and partic-ulate (PM) emissions.

In addition to its highly advanced, full hybrid powertrain, the third gen-eration Prius also introduces numer-ous high technology features to thesegment. They include a world-firstcombination of a solar powered ven-tilation system and remote controlledair conditioning, a head-up display, touch sensitive Touch Tracer steeringwheel-mounted switches and a pre-crash safety system.

You are out shopping minding yourown business or dining with friendsand suddenly for no reason your headstarts to spin, the sweat starts to pourfrom most parts of your body and youhave pains in your chest. Your havinga heart attack. Somehow you manageto get to the emergency room only tobe told you were in fact having a panicattack.

You wonder what caused such a terri-ble thing and will you have anymore?

According to the National Phobic's So-ciety one in three people will suffer apanic attack at some point in theirlives. They come out of the blue andanyone can have one.

Panic attacks are usually triggered by astressful event. A Bereavement, finan-cial worries, overworking, movinghouse and divorce can all raise ouranxiety levels to the point where ourbodies become over sensitive. Theycan occur when we become concernedfor our own health.

Although terrifying none of thesethoughts and feelings ever comes toanything. There is no evidence thatanyone has ever died from a panic at-tack, and no one has ever gone crazy. Most attacks last for between 5 andtwenty minutes, although they can beas brief as a few seconds.

The sensations you have are all be-cause you have suddenly had a largeamount of adrenalin released into yoursystem. Adrenalin is a way of prepar-ing your body to protect yourself.

So for example: Imagine being facedwith a large snarling dog just as youare about go into someone's house.Your senses send messages to the out-ermost surface of the brain about whatthey note has happened i.e. 'There's abig dog here and at anytime I can beattacked!' This information is com-bined with all our memory files tocompare notes and the memory comesup with a match 'we are in fact in somekind of trouble so this means danger!'So a panic attack can happen which isa way for our body to start to prepareto deal with this stress.

Such an event can leave a lastingmemory but over time we do kindof forget about the 'bad dogexperience' but a number of years laterwhilst minding our own business ourbrain thinks back to such an event, itcould be a certain smell, a voice, any-thing that was part of the bad experi-ence and lo and behold a panic attackoccurs.

We can be in school sitting our examsand a panic attack can happen, yet itmaybe our first attack, we can't think

why we are having these feelings now.But if you were to really think aboutthe situation, you will know why. Fearof not passing our exams, thinking ofour future and what it has in store forus. Letting those we love down. Allthese thoughts whirl round and aroundin our head and  in seconds we start topanic. Some of us handle the situation, others don't do so well.

So where do you go from here? Mostpeople go to their Doctor who willmonitor the frequency of these attacks. Some Doctors will prescribe medica-tion but getting to the root of the at-tacks usually work for the better that'swhere a Therapist can help.

Therapists  will help you realise theimpact that your thoughts have on yourbody and help you realise that you arein control of your body. You will beshown how to breath properly, how totalk to yourself and think positive byre-programming the brain (and no youdon't need an operation) When we talkto ourselves it's immediate and themore we use the same words over andover, the more our brain starts to be-lieve what we are saying. So by sayingon a regular basis 'Everyday I am get-ting better'  what we are doingis Reinforcing our brain to believe this.

So if we feel an attack happening andwe instantly say 'I know my heart isbeating fast, but it will eventually slowdown again.' I feel sweaty and dizzybut it is only because I have too muchadrenalin in my bloodstream just nowbut it will fade away'

Now that you know why you feel theway you do, you can make your ownself statements for you to say to your-self. They will have the effect of re-minding you about the real reason whyit is happening, then take away thatfeeling of fear, and help calm youdown.Eventually you will find that the sensa-tions you experience begin to matterless and less as the re-programmingstarts to take effect. It may not happenimmediately, but be assured that it willhappen and all because of a positivethought.

So remember you are not alone andyou are certainly not going crazy! There is help out there and it may taketime but it will most certainly be worththe time and effort you put in.

The first step is picking up the phoneand making that first appointment.

When Panic Attacks....Attack!By Tammy Spain

Q:What have the following all got incommon? The butcher’s shop, thepharmacy, the hairdressers, schools,Chinese takeaways and restaurants.

A: They are just a selection of theevery day venues where my childrenhave been offered lollipops.

Yes, it’s hard work being a responsi-ble parent when it comes to healthyeating. You can be Annabel Carmelpersonified in your organic kitchen. But once you step outside yourhummus-and-haricot-bean-house-hold, that’s where the trouble starts. Our children are under attack from aplethora of sweet treats and junkfood, coming at them from everyangle. What’s to be done?

Lollipops! Oh children - Lollipops!Dental statistics bear out the mas-sive increase in sugar consumptionamongst recent generations. A den-tist I spoke to says lollipops are ac-tually the worst possible sweet itemto hand a child; a solid lump of sug-ar on a stick, sitting in your child’smouth for an age, compared to say apiece of chocolate or ice cream. While some proponents of lollipop-giving might give you the nod be-forehand or seek your permission, others wave them gaily under yourchild’s nose while asking you, orelse hand them straight into theireager hands. Now try interveningand you become the most hated par-ent on the planet.

And of course the problems don’tbegin and end with the lollipop phe-nomenon. Childhood obesity levelsare also on the rise – over 300,000Irish children are currently deemedoverweight or obese. So choosinghealthy options when eating outwith children is becoming more im-portant. But frequently far fromeasy. All too often a restaurant bill-ing itself as family friendly doesn’textend much beyond high chairs, colouring pages and of course theubiquitous lollipop. After that youcan sadly expect the typical kids’menu of burgers, sausages, fish fin-gers etc with chips all round. Ofcourse if your child can’t yet read allis not lost. But let’s face it, itdoesn’t take a very advanced levelof skill to read the C-H-I-P word, and after that they’re off. Some

would argue that healthy eating athome means these are treats wheneating out. That’s fine, but if youwant fast food there’s more thanplenty of those outlets available.

Of course our parent’s generationwould hold different opinions ontreats i.e. you all had lollipops grow-ing up and turned out fine, so theyprobably think we are far too strin-gent. And it’s next to impossible toask Granny not to spoil the kids withtreats – she sees it as part of her jobspec! But ours is a much more afflu-ent society these days, with morepocket money, more parties, moreoutings. And most child centred at-tractions take full advantage of theircaptive mini- audiences. From thezoo to the cinema or play centre, they all display the family size bagsof sweets and other tempting treatsas prominently as they can manage. We parents may hold the purse-strings, but we also know the poten-cy of pester power. And it actuallybecomes harder to buy your ownchild a treat on an outing knowingthey are reeling them in from everyother possible source too.

It’s not that I’m a food fascist. Iknow a little girl who never gets anysweets or treats ever and that is sad. They are part of childhood itself. But treats by definition should beoccasional, be it a biscuit, somechocolate or whatever. And healthexperts advise that after a meal isthe best time, if treats are being giv-en. Ice cream can make a great des-sert. Some of the best childhoodmemories can even be based aroundice cream. But treats lose all theirmagic (and bargaining power!) ifthey are handed out and received atevery turn. And where does thatleave the joy and excitement of go-ing to a birthday party?

We’ll probably never succeed inlicking the lollipop practice, but ifour little ones could learn from usthat treats are just that, and grow upwith healthy teeth and normal sizeclothing? Well, that would be justsweet.

Aspiring gardeners might think they’vemissed their chance this year. However, there is always something to do in thegarden, and the best book to get you go-ing is The Irish Gardener’s Handbook. There are many good things about thisbook, but the top thing must be that it’sIrish. Our gardening books generallycome from Britain where growing con-ditions are different. The IrishGardener’s Handbook is the first com-prehensive book to cover growing fruit, vegetables, and herbs in Ireland.Another good thing about The IrishGardener’s Handbook is the way it islaid out – information on different plantsis presented very clearly. The book alsoshows when and how to sow and identi-fies what plants will be easy or difficultto grow, a great help to the beginninggardener. By flicking through, you canquickly find what vegetables you shouldbe starting now and when to plant fruitthis autumn. The ‘Things You MayNeed to Know’ section provides tips and

tri

cks that will get you started quickly andthe encouragement you need to keepgoing. This is probably the best bookthere is for the Irish gardener. The Irish Gardener’s Handbook is avail-able in paperback from Sheelagh na Gigbookshop. The Irish Gardener’s Handbook by Michael BrenockReview by Elizabeth OShea

Book Review

The considerable shift within theIrish construction industry towardsenergy efficient building design isbeing acknowledged by a newlylaunched awards scheme, details ofwhich were announced today.

Building professionals includingarchitects, engineers, builders anddevelopers, across County Tipperaryare being urged to submit entries tothe Isover Energy Efficiency Awards(EEA), which recognise new andrenovated buildings that have beenbuilt with a very low energy demand.

A €10,000 prize will be presented tothe overall winner of the Irish finalswho will go forward to representIreland at a European Awardsceremony in Madrid in May 2011.The winner will also be profiled inthe internationally-distributed Isover‘Best Of’ book.

According to Mr. Kieran Holohan ofISOVER Ireland: “The new awardsscheme will celebrate Ireland’s mostenergy efficient renovation and newconstruction projects, both in theresidential and non-residentialsectors.”

Mr. Holohan added: “The ISOVEREnergy Efficiency Awards reflecttwo environmental issues that are atthe very heart of our core objectives- protection of the environment inthe face of climate change, andenhancing the quality of and physical

comfort in the buildings where wework and live.”

He pointed out that much ofIreland’s existing building stockcontinues to consume a considerableamount of energy for heating withsignificant emissions of greenhousegases from the burning of fossilfuels.

“New building regulations coupledwith a change in consumer behaviourand attitudes has led to a significantincrease in the number of renovationand construction projects embracingenergy efficient design”, Mr.Holohan stated.

The adjudication panel includesleading Irish experts in the field ofgreen design and construction, namely Tomas O Leary, PassiveHouse Academy Ireland; Jeff Colley,Editor of Construct Ireland andwinner of the 2010 Green LeaderAward; Jay Stuart RIBA, SustainableDesign Consultant; and ZdenkaDebartoli, International MarketManager Building, ISOVER.

Projects entered in the competitionmust be fully completed byDecember 2010 and not more than 5years old.  Closing date for entriesOctober 8th 2010. The Irish awardsceremony will take place inDecember 2010.

(Continued from previous issue)Self-care, safety, healing andforgiveness, following leaving anabusive relationship.

As you accept yourself, the good and thebad, and stop the tendency to blame your-self and to compare yourself to others, you should also begin to nurture yourself.Your abusive partner has done the oppo-site, so you will be countering the damagedone by his/her abuse. Caring for yourselfand treating yourself with tenderness willhave a healing effect, and will help raiseyour self-esteem. When I was training tobe a counsellor, some of my colleaguesoften referred to how hard I was on my-self, and how judgemental I was of my-self. My experience has been thatalthough I have come to love myself, boththe good and the shadow side, it has beena long and painful process, and I still canbe hard on myself. Very often we needsomeone to tell us that we are harsh onourselves. It may have become normal forus. It is a heavy burden.I have mentioned earlier that people haveremained in abusive relationships be-cause they have failed to grieve their loss-es. Hence healing and growth can comethrough such grieving once the victim hasleft the relationship. This will probablyrequire therapy, because it means enter-ing a new world of pain, having alreadyleft one. But the reality is that survivorshave only a few choices. They can denytheir pain and keep running from it, theycan dwell in it and live a life of sadness,or they can enter and move through it.You may recall that I mentioned compli-cated grief in my articles on bereavement, and in my book on the loss of my child Icame to the conclusion that, as individu-als, my family members suffered fromcomplicated grief. It is more than likelythat the person who has left an abusiverelationship will have complicated grief. So let us look at how one moves through

complicated grief. Connie Fourré outlinesthe six steps in this:

1. Acknowledging the loss. It is so hardto admit that the relationship is over. Thisis made all the harder by the fact that theabuser may have persuaded the survivorto return to the relationship on severaloccasions. These false endings make itvery difficult to acknowledge the realending when it comes. The acknowledge-ment is made all the more difficult if theabusive partner then stalks or harasses thesurvivor. This awful experience showsthe survivors that the person they thoughtthey knew either never existed or hasdisappeared. It is also very difficult tosurvivors to understand the loss. Theywill have witnessed the behaviours of theabuser, but it is difficult to understandwhy abusers throw everything away(family and relationship) just to hang ontosuch behaviour
