The Tipperary G.A.A. Yearbook 2016is now available in the bookshops andusual outlets. Published annually since1970 it is an outstanding record of theachievements of club and county in allaspects of the G.A.A. Whereas themain focus of people’s interests may beon hurling and football, camogie andladies football, the book also tells thecomplete story of achievements inScór, handball, Bord na nÓg and otherareas of G.A.A. Activities.

It is a huge compendium of informationthat strives to be the complete referencework on the G.A.A. in the county. Forinstance the section, County Teams2015, by John Smith includes the line-out of every team that represented thecounty in all grades of hurling andfootball during 2015. There is a greatreference section for all the results inthe Scoreboard 2015 section by EdDonnelly.

One of the most read sections of thebook is, Friends We Lost, obituary no-tices of the many Gaels who passedaway during the past year. And theywere many. They include Tony Reddin,Jimmy Doyle, Tomás Ó Baróid, RayReidy, Dom Browne, Tom ‘Senator’Murphy and Jackie Griffin, to namejust a few.

The Yearbook always carries a numberof feature articles and Seamus Leahy isalways a regular in this field. Hedoesn’t disappoint this year with hisaccount of the 1916 All-Ireland, wonby a Boherlahan Selection in January1917.

A High Fashion Media Makeupworkshop was recently facilitated inTemplemore College by internation-ally renowned Makeup Artist ‘Cathe-rine Biggs’. Makeup Artistrystudents and Beauty Therapy stu-dents were shown how to create adramatic ‘high fashion’ makeup lookusing industry standard makeupbrands and professional techniques.The workshop took several hours andalso involved the students carryingout their own looks afterwards. Cath-erine explained what it is like towork in the industry of Makeup Art-istry in particular in the film industry.She is currently second in commandon ‘Vikings’ and has worked on thisproduction for the past three years.She has also worked on internationalmovies such as ‘The Great Gatsby’,‘Australia’, ‘Mad Max 4 – FuryRoad’, and television series ‘Homeand Away’, ‘All Saints’, ‘XPose’ toname but a few. This gave the stu-dents a great insight into the realworld of work.

Templemore College of Further Edu-cation is the leading provider of PLCcourses in Tipperary and acknowl-edges the need for programmes thatfocus on providing courses that meetthe needs of industry. The MakeupArtistry course at Templemore Col-lege is in its first year and so far isproving to be very popular. Studentswill achieve a QQI Award at Level 5in Makeup Artistry. This qualifies

students to work as Makeup Artistsor ‘MUA’s’. Course tutor NicolaWelford says that ‘this course hascome at the right time….makeup art-istry is growing quickly as an indus-try in this country andinternationally….peoples interest inmakeup and techniques is huge’. Stu-dents study basic and advancedmakeup techniques, high fashion me-dia makeup, bridal makeup, everydaymakeup, makeup for television formen and women, barbering, hennatattoos. The course also offers specialeffects makeup involving the produc-tion of bald caps, silicone prostheticsfor scars and wounds. The Period andTheatrical Makeup module focuseson makeup through the ages and in-cludes fantasy and character makeupfor television and theatre. In additionto these Waxing, Manicure and Pedi-cure are other skills that the studentslearn and ‘Postiche’ which involvesthe making of facial hair pieces stud-ying wig making techniques. It isdefinitely a very varied programmebut tailored to suit industries currentrequirements. Employment opportu-nities are very good for students whohave completed a course such as thisat Templemore College.

Music lovers in and around Borriso-leigh are in for a treat when JimmyCrowley comes to perform in Finn’sBar on Dec. 28th.

Jimmy Crowley has been a centralfigure in the Irish folk scene sincethe enthusiastic reception of his de-but album The Boys of Fairhill in1977. With his band Stokers Lodgetheir mission was to present thestreet ballads of Cork city compli-mented by the ornate folk songs ofthe rural hinterland of Cork and Ker-

ry in an exciting orchestration of uil-leann pipes, concertina, autoharp,harmonium, mandolin, bouzouki andguitar in their native accent. The sec-ond album, Camphouse Ballads hur-tled the band into the vortex of thefolk scene; they were now perform-ing at folk festivals and making tvappearances in Ireland, Britain andAmerica. Both albums were pro-duced by Micheál Ó Dómhnaill ofthe Bothy Band. Like Chris Twomeyof Stokers Lodge, Micheál was aseminal influence in Jimmy’s musi-cal education.

If you suffer from social phobia/anxiety,you are assuming that others will thinkin a negative way about you. Do youreally think that you can read the mindsof others!!! Do you really think that youcan foretell the future!!! Perhaps youhave a negative view of yourself.Perhaps you are a perfectionist. Perhapsyou have been shamed as a child bysomeone at home, among your friends orin school. Are you alwayscatastrophising? Aaron Beck, one of theleading theorists on negative thinkinguses this word as a way of explaininghow some people always have the worstpossible outlook on everything, blowingeverything out of proportion.

They might say something like this – ‘IfI am seen as being stupid (boring, dull,uninteresting, nervous, etc.) it will be acatastrophe. It will be the end of theworld. It will be disastrous’. When youwrite it down like this, hopefully youwill see how ridiculous such negativethinking is. It is totally divorced fromreality. Is it really true that you have tobe the centre of attention, the mostinteresting in a group, the one who has tospeak? Do you really believe that you areso interesting that everybody is lookingat you? Instead of focusing on yourselfand how you might be seen in a group,divert your attention from yourself andonto others. People prefer others to listento them. So practise being a goodlistener, rather than tormenting yourselfto take part.

I am convinced that all the foregoingcomes from how social phobics projecttheir own negative thoughts and theirown negative self-view onto others. Inother words, they imagine that othersshare their negativity, and have anegative opinion of them. They,therefore, have a strong sense of beingjudged, and the intensity of such feelingcan incapacitate a person. They have astrong sense of inferiority because theydo not feel that they are sociallydesirable or socially attractive (beingsocially attractive means that othersenjoy one’s company, and so on), andtend to indulge in continuous rumination.They carry out what has been called apost mortem review, in which theyanalyse in a negative way how they haveresponded to conversation, judgethemselves as having been uninteresting,and perhaps agonised at how otherslooked at them. They imagine that othershave seen the internal vulnerable child inthem that is in terror of rejection. Inother words, they have a very negativeself-appraisal of their socialperformance.

They have an equally negative view ofhow others appraise them. This toxicthinking only strengthens the sufferer’ssense of inadequacy, and reinforces the

fear of social situations. Unfortunately,those who suffer social anxietyconstantly require reassurance, andcreate frustration in others. Theirbehaviour frustrates their objective ofbeing accepted.Rumination is greatly increased in thosewho have a mixture of anxiety anddepression following interaction withstrangers. Those with major depressionare more vulnerable to anxiety. It seemsto be increased also by the nature ofwhat the sufferer says in such socialsituations. There seems to be lessrumination when conversation isconfined to small talk, but morerumination if the anxious persons makedisclosures about themselves. Thesufferers are, therefore, inclined toexamine what they have said, andwhether these have portrayed them asbeing socially desirable (i.e. as beingintelligent, witty, and so on).

I mentioned in my articles on depressionthat women are more likely to ruminatethan men, and thus are more prone toanxiety. Men tend to ruminate aboutsituations involving anger, and theyconsequently build up grudges, but notanxiety. Women on the other hand, aremore involved with relationships of alltypes. They are more relationshiporiented than men, and so there is morescope for rumination about socialinteraction and how they are faring. Theytend to be more aware of the quality oftheir involvement and interaction inrelationships. Anxious women questionthis quality in a negative way, and tendto analyse how they might be better incommunication and in being interesting.This leads them on a merry-go-round ofself-criticism.

Templemore St Patricks Day Paradewill achieve a unique distinction nextMarch when it celebrates its 40th An-niversary and continues as the oldestactive parade in County Tipperary.Since it was reactivated all those yearsago, the parade has developed into oneof the most successful and well attend-ed in the entire county and region.Large crowds flock to the town andwith numerous on street attractions, allage groups are well catered for. Cou-pled with the various groups and floatstaking part in the parade, a most enjoy-able family day is assured. And in re-cent years a more international aspecthas been added by our twin towns ofPrémilhat (FR) and Potenza Picena(IT) attendance, in the parade.To add to the festivities, the Paradecommittee have developed a festivalaround our patron saint’s day. TheBlessing of the Shamrock ceremonyon the night prior to our National Daylaunches a festival of music dance andculture which is enjoyed by local andvisitor alike.Needless to say much preparationtakes place to ensure the success of theparade and several meetings of thecommittee have already taken place.

Each and every aspect of the workingsof the event are revisited in an effort toimprove upon the success of the previ-ous year’s event. These meetings willcontinue over the coming months aswe plan ahead to celebrate an historicanniversary.

ThemeThe theme of this year’s parade is con-sidered most appropriate as we cele-brate the 100th Anniversary of the1916 Easter Rising. Therefore we areasking all participants to adopt boththe Dress and Events of the 1916 Ris-ing as their theme for floats and en-tries. Even those attending on the dayor events associated with our 40th Pa-rade are encouraged to “dress up” forthe occasion.
