Shaunavon aRtS Coun-Cil announCES Final PERFoRManCE The final performance of the 2013/2014 concert series will be by Gordie MacKeeman and his Rhythm Boys Tuesday April 22nd at 7:30 at the Plaza Theatre. Hailing from Prince Edward Is-land, the award-winning Gordie MacKeeman and his Rhythm Boys serve up old-time roots
music with an energy level that practically yanks you out of your seat by the collar. With a slight bend of his knee, Gordie MacK-eeman launches into a song. Guided by the sharp cuts of his fiddle, his famous crazy legs shake and twist with a laughing regard for physics. The whole time, his Rhythm Boys deliver a surefooted roots instrumenta-tion to accompany the spectacle.

The Rhythm Boys were given the Galaxie Supernova Award at the 2012 Ottawa Folk Fes-tival for outstanding live per-formance. Tom Power, host of Deep Roots on CBC, recently called the Rhythm Boys his “Best Discovery Band” at the 2012 East Coast Music Awards. If ever someone was deserving of the nickname “Crazy Legs”, it just might be Gordie MacKee-man. His thrilling dance style mixed with great bluegrass vocals, Peter Cann’s blister-ing guitar solos, and the lively multi-instrumental talents of Thomas Webb and Mark Ged-des, and Gordie MacKeeman and his Rhythm Boys are a complete entertainment pack-age. Be sure to check them out for yourself at www.gordie-mackeeman.com In concert they offer up rock-abilly-inspired rhythms and of course, MacKeeman’s perfectly executed fiddle work. There’s upbeat reels and weighted laments. It’s roots music that sets its goals much higher than simple reproductions of the past. MacKeeman oversees the alchemistic mixture of stringed acrobatics like a modern day Bob Wills. For this final concert the Arts Council is excited to be team-ing up with the local restaurant The Harvest Eatery to enhance the concert going experience. The Harvest Eatery will be on location at the Plaza Theatre
that night to offer for sale be-fore the show and at intermis-sion tasty h’orderves as well as beer and wine. “It’s going to make a great night out even better” said Arts Council Pres-ident Terry Shields. Tickets are $25 for adults, $7 for teens and $3 for children and are available in advance at the Grand Coteau Centre or at the door.

Hollywood stars speak out about it, politicians argue about it and books on the subject are best-sellers: global warming is a hot topic today. But just a few decades ago, some scientists were predicting another ice age. “I think every single scientist... we’ve spoken to for the past year has been forecasting a cooling trend, maybe even an ice age. And you’re saying quite the opposite,” CBC’s Barbara Frum tells W.S. Broecker of Columbia University. He predicts the planet is actually going to warm up soon thanks to all the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
• The Oxford English Dictionary defines the green-house effect as “the trapping of the sun’s warmth in a planet’s lower atmosphere, due to the greater transparency of the atmosphere to visible radiation from the sun than to infrared radiation emitted from the planet’s surface.” It defines global warm-ing as “the gradual increase in the overall tempera-ture of the Earth’s atmosphere due to the green-house effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, CFCs, and other pollutants.”• Oxford defines greenhouse gas as “a gas, such as carbon dioxide, that contributes to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radia-tion.”• W.S. Broecker, interviewed in this clip, was a leader among the pro-ponents of global warming theory in the 1970s, according to the 1999 book Greenhouse: The 200-Year Story of Global Warming by Gale E. Christianson.• The idea that carbon dioxide affects global temperature was not new in the 1970s. Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius devised a mathematical model in 1896 that demonstrated how cutting the level of carbon dioxide in the air by half could lead to another ice age. Conversely, increasing carbon dioxide would heat things up. But Arrhenius wasn’t too concerned about this at the time -- based on the car-bon dioxide emissions of the 19th century, he figured it would take 3,000 years before the Earth warmed significantly.

A young punker gets on the cross-town bus. He’s got spiked, multi-colored hair that’s green, purple and orange. His clothes are a tattered mix of rags, his legs are bare and he’s without shoes. His face and ears are riddled with pierced jewelry and his earrings are big bright feathers. He sits down in the only vacant seat, directly across from an old man who just glares at him for about ten miles. Finally the punk gets self conscious and spits at the old man: “What ‘er you starin’ at you old fart, didn’t you ever do anything wild when you were young?!” Without missing a beat the old man replies: “Yeah. Back when I was in the Navy I got real drunk in Singapore and screwed a parrot. I thought maybe you were my son.”

Two guys in a bar, One says “Did your hear the news - Mike is dead!”“Wooo, what the hell happened to him?” “Well he was on his way over to my house the other day and when he arrived outside the house he didn’t brake properly and boom - He hit the pavement and the car flips up and he crashed through the sunroof - Went flying through the air and smashed through my upstairs bedroom window.” “What a horrible way to die!” “No no, he survived that, that didn’t kill him at all. So, he’s landed in my upstairs bedroom and he’s all covered in broken glass on the floor. Then, he spots the big old antique wardrobe we have in the room and reaches up for the handle to try to pull himself up. He’s just dragging himself up when bang, this massive wardrobe comes crashing down on top of him, crushing him and breaking most of his bones.” “What a way to go, that’s terrible!” “No no, that didn’t kill him he survived that. He managed to get the wardrobe off him and crawls out onto the landing, he tries to pull himself up on the banister but under his weight, the banister breaks and he goes falling down on to the first floor. In mid air, all the broken banister poles spin and fall on him, pinning him to the floor, sticking right through him.” “Now that is the most unfortunate way to go!” “No no, that didn’t kill him, he even survived that. So he’s on the downstairs landing, just be-side the kitchen. He crawls in to the kitchen, tries to pull himself up on the cooker, but reached for a big pot of boiling hot water, whoosh, the whole thing came down on him and burned most of his skin off him.” “Man, what a way to go!” “No no, he survived that, he survived that ! He’s lying on the ground, covered in boiling water and he spots the phone and tries to pull himself up, to call for help, but instead he grabs the light
switch and pulls the whole thing off the wall and the water and electricity didn’t mix and so he got electrocuted, wallop, 10,000 volts shot through him.”
“Now that is one awful way to go!” “No no, he survived that, he ...” “Hold on now, just how the hell did he die?” “I shot him!” “You shot him? What the hell did you shoot
him for?” “He was wrecking my f***ing house.”

A sweet little boy surprised his grandmother one
morning and brought her a cup of coffee. He made it himself and was so proud. He anxiously waited to hear the verdict on the quality of the coffee. The grandmother had never in her life had such a bad cup of coffee, and as she forced
down the last sip she noticed three of those little green army guys in
the bottom of the cup.She asked, “Honey, why would
three little green army guys be in the bottom of my cup?” Her grand-son replied, “You know grandma,
it’s like on TV, ‘The best part of waking up is soldiers in your cup.’”
