“We would like to let you knowthat we have been fully cooperat-ing with the sheriff’s departmentand that the victim mentioned inthe press release is not a student inour district,” the district said in thestatement posted on their Facebookpage. “Mr. Drake has been on ad-ministrative leave, pending the out-come of the criminalinvestigation.”

Some Colton residents, many ofwhom were former students ofDrake, expressed their shock andfrustration over the incident. AlexBeltran explained that it is hard toimagine Drake would commit sucha crime.

“It's too early to make judgementand it's hard to believe because hewould be the last person you wouldthink to do something like that,”she said. “I had a substitute teacherin elementary school that turnedout to be a child molester. Thesigns were there, he asked us to callhim ‘Mr. Honeybear’ instead of hisreal name. He wanted to be ourfriend and played baseball with usmost of the day instead of follow-

ing the teacher's lesson plan.”

Nevertheless, Beltran said she isreserving full judgement on theissue until a full investigation onDrake’s alleged crime is com-pleted.

“We have to wait for law enforce-ment to investigate because theseclaims should be taken seriously,”she said. “So far, no one has any-thing to say; besides, they don'twant to assume anything.”

Cecilia Rasso, 18, said she andmany friends are in awe becausethey regarded him as a man withgood morals.

“A lot of my past classmates, whowere in his class for yearbook andEnglish thought of him highly,” shesaid. “He seems like a really goodguy. I don’t think we should judgehim, but if he did such an act, weneed to leave it in the hands of thelaw and provide justice for the vic-tim. If it’s true that he did it, it justmakes me wonder who can we re-ally trust?”

she said. “Many of us will haveto rely on MediCal and Medicare, which only provides so much.”

The 65-year-old said she is veryproud of her background and her-itage, and criticizes the manner inwhich the RSBCIHI is conduct-ing their health affairs.

“They give us attitude when weask for help,” said Copetillo. “It’slike they’re hiding something.Who are they to judge and decidewho is Indian. I mean, who dothey think they are?”

Desiree Williams of Highlandsaid the organization is goingback on its mission statement, which according to the RSBCIHIwebsite, is “to share the values

and traditions, strengthen thebody, promote peace of mind, andempower dreams to all those whocome through our doors.”

“Look at what they’re doing toother Indians,” Williams said.“They’re going back on theirword.”

Williams, who depended on theclinic’s dental, optometry, phar-macy, and radiology services, be-lieves the issue of not providingservices to indirect descendants isone of politics.

“I don’t understand why they arebiased on bloodline,” she said. “Ithink them taking us and othersoff of their care is a front. Thereis something else going on. Theyhave enough money to provide

care for all Indians.”

Williams and her relatives pos-sess documentation from the BIAthat state they are descendants ofa great uncle who was registeredon the 1928 California Roll of In-dians.

“To the clinics, it all comesdown the fact that my great unclewas on the roll--not my grandfa-ther. You tell me: How does thatmake me and my relatives anyless Native American?” intonedWilliams.

Besides the Mt. Vernon Avenuelocation in Grand Terrace, RSB-CIHI currently serves clients with10 clinics in the greater SanBernardino-Riverside Countyareas.

“To the clinics, it all comes downthe fact that my great uncle was onthe roll--not my grandfather. Youtell me: How does that make meand my relatives any less NativeAmerican?”

Every vote counts:On February 2, 2016 the City ofSan Bernardino held a runoff elec-tion to determine who would rep-resent the residents of the Sixthand Seventh Wards. With an unof-ficial count (on February 12 theRegistrar of Voters will make thecount official) of votes cast withthe exception of approximately350 votes yet to count (not all inthese two races), I estimate that ofthe possible 8,499 votes in theSixth Ward, only a little over 12%voted. In the Seventh Ward with10,647 possible voters only 15%voted. While in the Sixth Ward thewinner is clear, in the SeventhWards a few votes may determinethe outcome of the election. Everyvote counts especially in localelections. 2016 is an importantyear with a Presidential election, but locally, you, the voter, can de-termine who represents you in thestate assembly, on the city council,on the school board and on thewater district. They say journalists arenot supposed to be af-fected by the stories

they cover. Yet, in my mind, Ifind myself revisiting the tragiccase of Mitesh Patel. In speak-ing to many of the residents inSan Bernardino, his murder onJan. 29 has left many feelingthat there is no hope.

Mayor Carey Davis and SanBernardino Police Chief JarrodBurguan have both made prom-ises to implement interventionprograms to reduce violence.Nevertheless we continue tohear stories of people losingtheir lives over senseless cru-elty.

The terrorist attack at the In-land Regional Center on Dec. 2magnified the city’s plight. Totheir credit the San BernardinoPolice Department, with heroicaction, quelled the threat. De-spite the substantial loss thatcame with the tragic deaths of14 people, many more liveswere perhaps saved by theirdiligent efforts.

Nevertheless, I believe there isa lack of concerned interestwhen it comes to the everydayissue of gun violence in the city.I don’t think the issue has struck

the same nerve among the city’sleadership.

Many of the leaders spoke lastDecember about the need for usto come together and supporteach other during bleak times. In front of news cameras andbright lights, they made the community feel as if there wasperhaps a silver lining to thisdisaster.

“This tragedy will not paralyzeor terrorize us from coming to-gether,” Mayor Davis said a dayafter the attack.

Yet two months removed fromthe shooting, it seems the lead-ership has forgotten about theongoing tragedy in our city--onethat has affected hundreds ofunderserved and underprivi-leged families for over a decade.

The robbery that took MiteshPatel’s life two weeks ago was adetriment to those who lovedhim. To hear his patrons tell it,this man’s simple acts of kind-ness provided these same vul-nerable residents with thesupport and resources theyneeded to feel cherished. Assomeone who didn’t know him,it pains me that such a goodbusiness owner and citizen losthis life over several hundreddollars.

And in the face of all this, ourmayor and councilmembersseem to fail to show the samecompassion they demonstratedduring the month of December.

Patel’s tragedy and the re-sponse from residents was agreater reflection of the con-cerns of the city. The fact cityleaders didn’t address this smallpocket of the community showstheir lack of true compassion. It’s one thing to go in front of anational audience and speak ofresiliency, but it's another feat tospeak to constituents and takeactions to address their worries.

There are many residents whoare looking to be a part of thesolution--to fixing SanBernardino’s woe. But the lead-ership has to meet these peoplein the middle by demonstratingthe same concern and samecompassion in the days afterDec. 2.

San Bernardino City AttorneyGary Saenz said, “The city mustfavor its workforce to continuefunctioning as a city.”

Does our city attorney not realizeour current workforce is the city’sfuture retirees? Are the promisesbeing made to the current work-force going to be broken after theyretire such as the city has donewith the current retirees?

How does our city attorney pro-pose that the city keep and main-tain a loyal and dedicatedworkforce when the active em-ployees are standing by andwatching the city break the prom-ises it had made to past city em-ployees?

What guarantees do the currentcity employees have that SanBernardino won’t take away theirearned pensions when they retire

in the future? I know several for-mer city employees who have ac-cepted employment with othermunicipal agencies for that exactreason.

Mr. Saenz, our retirees deservethe same treatment as our currentemployees and no employee groupshould be favored over another.

Joe Leon,San Bernardino

Retired city workers deserve benefits, too

The San Bernardino shooting onDec. 2, 2015 was a terrible catas-trophe to many people; not onlythe victims and their families, butfor all who live in this area.I watched as many people gavetheir support and dug deep intotheir own pockets to give theirmoney to help those who lost theirloved ones. One was even givenan automobile.

That said, we now see some ofthe victims’ families turn aroundand filing suit! I ask myself, against whom? What amount of

money can ever buy back theirloved ones’ lives? Who is toblame? Surely, not the city or thecounty, or even the state. The firstresponders did a marvelous job inpossibly saving other lives.

I am certain those who have sowillingly and sacrificially donatedtoward these particular familiesmust be now asking themselves ifthey should have been so gener-ous. I know that’s what I would bedoing.

What a sad state of affairs we

have become when all we thinkabout is suing. I am of the oldergeneration, and back in my day,we never sued people, especiallywhen there really is no one (alive)at fault, as in this terrible situation.

The ones who should be sued (ifone must sue) are dead. They’rethe ones to blame. Not any ofthose who remain alive and havecome forward to help all thesefamilies.

Barbara Campbell,Bloomington

We’ve often heard, roughlyaround this time every four years, how the pending election “is one

for the record books.” This time, however, it could actually provetrue for Latinos and minorities inCalifornia.

In 2012, the Pew Research Cen-ter found that nationally, Hispan-ics make up nearly half of theelectorate, among those numbers37 percent are millennials, themost influential voting bloc, and anumber that could swing the bal-ance of the election, regardless ofthe candidate, into power.

The unfortunate reality is theywon’t even show up in November. With so many issues at stake, likethe Defense of Marriage Act, De-ferred Action for Childhood Ar-rivals, comprehensiveimmigration reform, the future ofhealth care for all, this group of

young people could rotate the di-rection of the country. Republicansare hoping they stay at home andDemocrats are praying they getengaged in the election.

According to the PRC, manymillennials aren’t too engaged tobegin with, but this specific groupis involved even less. Why? Forthe same reason generations be-fore have fallen out; lack of cam-paign targeting, lack of attractiveengagement and voter apathy.

Regardless of the message anycandidate or party puts out, thisgroup should coalesce and make astand. If for nothing else, becausetheir future depends on it.

Re: Council adopts Climate Action Planin hopes of reducing greenhouse gas emission

Alongside the local moves thathave been made to reduce green-house gas emissions, PresidentObama can and should makesweeping moves to implementgreen funding for the country inhis final yearly budget. This bigpicture will come back to deter-mine what kind of funding CityCouncils will have in the future.

The Inland Empire is highlyaware of the fact that it is one ofthe smoggiest regions in the coun-try. As the February 9th release ofthe President’s 2017 budget ap-proaches, there are climate changegoals and demands that should we

should be aware of and proactiveabout. Considering the InlandEmpire’s perspective as an areathat can actually see the changethat needs to happen, we need tobe in the forefront of demandingthe resources to make thosechanges from the government.

Speaking towards green budgetfunding goals that specificallyspeak towards the reality of theInland Empire, we need the Pres-ident to focus on parks and elec-tric cars. In order for thepracticality and accessibility ofelectric cars to grow, we needmore funding for the EV Every-

where program. Also, consideringthe beautiful parks nearby, theSanhedrin Wilderness needs in-creased funding from the ForestService and Big Morongo CanyonPreserve and Area of Critical En-vironmental Concern needs in-creased funding from The Bureauof Land Management.

The goals for the President’sgreen funding from the 2017budget needs to be ambitious, both as it concerns the Inland Em-pire and our whole country.

Words to Think About: Sights and Sounds While Traveling

By G. W. Abersold Ph.D.

Iam a compulsive-obsessivepersonality when it comes tomusic.

Wherever and whenever I hearany kind of music, I must listen toit. Live or recorded, it makes littledifference. The trumpet was my first instru-ment at the age of 10. High schoolband was followed by playing in aswing band and symphony.Through the years I learned to playthe baritone horn, trombone andbase fiddle. My choral conductingwas learned in college along withvoice training. It is therefore, natural that when

traveling I would have a penchanttoward music. Music is indigenousto every country and there is a

plethora of music-for listening anddancing pleasure-in the UnitedStates. I’ve listened to Dixieland inNew Orleans, country/western inTexas, blue grass in Kentucky, opera in New York, polka in theMidwest and gospel music in theSouth. I’ve enjoyed it all and par-ticipated in most of it.The strange sounds of Orientalmusic pleased my ear in Japan andChina. The Aborigines in Australiahave a most unique sound as do theMaori in New Zealand. I’ve lis-tened to concerts in both countries.I particularly enjoyed the greatestSalvation Army band I’ve everheard in Sydney, Australia. What can be said about the musicof Europe? I’ve listened to the royalband outside of the castle in Lon-don and beautiful Irish lyrics inDublin. The Scotch are unparal-leled with their bagpipes. Ofcourse, in Wales the music is irre-sistible. They have voices like TomJones and everyone sounds likeRichard Burton put to music. The only things I remember aboutFrance is Paris, sauces and land-scape. But Spain? It is somethingelse. Flamenco music, classical gui-tars and the “Macarena” fromSeville, where the song originated.I’ve danced to it in Seville, Cancunand Cuba.Morocco, Tunisia and the other

Arab countries have the samesound-to me. It all reminds me of acall to prayer or belly dancers. Thesound of Israeli music still lingerswith me. The various types of Jew-ish music are thrilling. I’ve alsodanced to the “Hava Nagila” andother folk songs.Seeing my wife, Stella, dancingwith Greek dancers on stage wasexciting. Their music pulsates withrhythm and energy. The same goesfor the music of Hungary and theCzech Republic. In both countriesit was the gypsy music that capti-vated me. Believe it or not, onegroup even played Dixieland.I’ve listened to polkas in Poland, watched ballet in Russia, was mes-merized by the waltzes of Strauss inVienna and could not stop yellingduring the ump-pah music of Ger-many.When you add large steins of beerplus pretzels with a German band,it is impossible to remain quiet. One reason I like cruises so muchis because of the variety of musicthey have. Usually there are four orfive bands playing different types ofmusic.I love band music. John PhillipSousa’s marches always thrill me.In fact, I always sing along when-ever the Star Spangled Banner isplayed.Do you like Hawaiian music? I

do. I particularly liked Don Ho and“watching” the hula. Years ago I lis-tened to the composer of “Beyondthe Reef” and have played and sungit ever since with genuine pleasure. There is no place like Milan, Italyfor opera. In fact, there is no placelike Italy for spaghetti while listen-ing to wandering musicians playingItalian love songs.Since I am of Swiss descent, I’mpartial to yodeling and the hugealpine horn. I’ll never forget listen-ing to a yodeling men’s choir oneSunday morning as they rehearsed.I have a distant cousin who sings inone such choir. The sounds are deepand mellow. They were singing inthe square of a small village high upin the mountains.Whenever I’m depressed, anxiousor just plain out-of-sorts, I listen toLatin music. All of us in SouthernCalifornia are devotees of mariachimusic. Do you know it started inGuadalajara, Mexico? My favoriteplace to listen to it is at GaribaldiPlaza in Mexico City. All night longdozens of groups serenade strollers, families and lovers. By the way, theMexican Farers Market is right be-side it.The reggae music of Jamaicacan’t be beat-especially on thedrums. The Caribbean Islands, withtheir Latin beat always excite me. Itcan be heard several miles off

shore. Puerto Rico pulsates withrum and rhumba.A few years ago while serving aschaplain aboard the S.S. Hope inCartagena, Colombia, I played in aband in the evening. The wildest ofColombian music is called“cumbia”. When someone yells“cumbia” I still come alert. You’ve never lived until you’veheard the “samba” in Brazil. Orwatched Brazilians dance it. Bodymovement is automatic when itstarts. The same goes for “salsa.”The most exotic music-to me- isthe “tango.” Argentina is its homeand it is played and danced all overthe country. In fact, it is havingresurgence in the U.S.My favorite of all Latin music isplayed and sung in Cuba. Music iseven more national than baseball.Everyone plays, sings and dances. As mentioned above, I’ve dance to“Macarena” there, listened to theswinging beat that sounds just likeit came from Africa. How do Iknow? I’ve listened to the music ofthe “Masai” natives in Zimbabweand Botswana. Finally, my very favorite type ofmusic for toe tapping and listeningpleasure is good, old-fashionedGlen Miller’s swing music. Please, whenever you travel, listen to themusic.Amen. Selah. So be it.

The Story of Black History Month

Black History Month, orNational African Amer-ican History Month, is

an annual celebration ofachievements by black Ameri-cans and a time for recognizingthe central role of African Amer-icans in U.S. history. The eventgrew out of “Negro History

Week,” the brainchild of notedhistorian Carter G. Woodson andother prominent African Ameri-cans. Since 1976, every U.S.president has officially desig-nated the month of February asBlack History Month. Othercountries around the world, in-cluding Canada and the United

Kingdom, also devote a monthto celebrating black history. The story of Black HistoryMonth begins in 1915, half acentury after the ThirteenthAmendment abolished slavery inthe United States. That Septem-ber, the Harvard-trained histo-rian Carter G. Woodson and the

prominent minister Jesse E.Moorland founded the Associa-tion for the Study of Negro Lifeand History (ASNLH), an organ-ization dedicated to researchingand promoting achievements byblack Americans and other peo-ples of African descent. Knowntoday as the Association for the

Study of African American Lifeand History (ASALH), thegroup sponsored a nationalNegro History week in 1926,choosing the second week ofFebruary to coincide with thebirthdays of Abraham Lincolnand Frederick Douglass. Theevent inspired schools and com-munities nationwide to organizelocal celebrations, establish his-tory clubs and host perform-ances and lectures. In the decades the followed, mayors of cities across the coun-try began issuing yearly procla-mations recognizing NegroHistory Week. By the late 1960s,thanks in part to the Civil RightsMovement and a growingawareness of black identity,Negro History Week hadevolved into Black HistoryMonth on many college cam-puses. President Gerald R. Fordofficially recognized Black His-tory Month in 1976, callingupon the public to “seize the op-portunity to honor the too-oftenneglected accomplishments ofblack Americans in every area ofendeavor throughout our his-tory.”Since then, every Americanpresident has designated Febru-ary as Black History Month andendorsed a specific theme. The2013 theme, At the Crossroadsof Freedom and Equality: TheEmancipation Proclamation andthe March on Washington, marks the 150th and 50th an-niversaries of two pivotal eventsin African-American history.

Alexander Mattison signs with D-1 Boise State;hopes others from San Bernardino follow

By Harvey M. Kahn

Alexander Mattison hasjoined just a handful ofSan Bernardino High

School football players in thepast 40 years that have earned ascholarship to play at a Division-1 college. Mattison made it offi-cial on Feb. 4 when he signed onnational letter of intent day withBoise State. The 6-2, 200 poundMattison is expected to get play-ing time immediately this fall inBoise, however Mattison real-izes the university already has anestablished running back in Je-remy McNichols, considered aprofessional prospect. "If I doeverything the right way it canbe mine by my sophomore year,"said Mattison. In his three years on the SanBernardino High School varsityfootball team, Mattison brokeone hundred years worth ofrushing records. His footballcoach called him a "once in alifetime player" who was a two-time All-CIF first team selec-tion. "I've been coaching 25years and have not seen anyonelike him," said SBHS coach JeffImbriani. "He's a advancedplacement student who speaksfluent Spanish and would prac-tice eight days a week if hecould."There was the chance that Mat-tison would enroll at the morehigh-profile Cajon High Schoolfootball program just before hisfreshman year. He had playedyouth football with many ofCajon's players beginning as six-year-olds on the North SanBernardino Cowboys. "I wastempted to transfer but decidedthat I could be successful nomatter where I was. I do thinkabout Cajon but I'm glad Istayed. You have to be true. AtSan Bernardino, I've met thepeople who will be my closestfriends for the rest of my life." The Boise State coaching staffis calling the 17-year-old Matti-son one of the most intriguingprospects in its incoming class

of 28 recruits. Its media relationsdepartment said they liked himso much they were going to re-cruit him as a safety. But whenone of their running backs com-mitted to Missouri, Mattisontook Boise State's only open spotleft for a running back. In astatement released by BoiseState running back coach LeeMarks, he said: "Alexander wassomeone I wanted from day one.I could see how dynamic he isand how great a kid he is. It waseasy to build that relationship."Back at SBHS, Imbriani saidhe will have to change his entireoffensive strategy due to the lossof Mattison. "We'll have almosteveryone back but we'll have to

start throwing more short passeswithout Alex." Mattison's three-year record breaking totals atSBHS reads: 4,166 rushingyards with 53 touchdowns andanother 953 receiving yards witheight touchdowns. Imbriani said Mattison isamong the top-10 academicallyat Cardinal City. He says alongwith being a school goodwillambassador, Mattison also wonthis season's San AndreasLeague, 195-pound dualwrestling championship to helpSBHS to the league title. Matti-son was also a CIF qualifier inthe 100 meters and the hurdles.Imbriani hinted that he hadenough confidence in Mattison

that he could use him as a mem-ber of his pit crew on his stockcar auto racing team. Imbrianihas competed at the OrangeShow Speedway since 2002.Mattison did say he was readyfor new goals and a new chapterin his life, however those goalsconsist of a college degree and aprofessional football career. In a recent meeting with formerSan Diego Charger's Mark Seay,Mattison was told by the 1985SBHS graduate that he could bethe next great player to comefrom their alma mater. Seayplayed in the NFL from 1994-1998. His colleague and SBHSalumnus J.T. Thomas played inthe NFL during that same time.

It gets scarce after that. SheltonDiggs played a few injuryplagued NFL seasons in the 70's.Bobby Howard played 12 years.Joe Womack played one seasonin 1962 with Pittsburgh andErnie Pinckert played in the1930's."Sure my goal is to play profes-sionally. I want to show thatguys from San Bernardino canmake it," said Mattison. "Yousee it all the time. Great athletesjust hanging around campus. Itry to get them to play but I'monly one guy. It's sad to see. Ihope I can open the eyes of oth-ers."

Aguilar AnnouncesBook Program for

San BernardinoCounty Schools and

Agencies

By Anthony Victoria

There are no reported casesof the Zika virus--the in-fection transmitted by

mosquito bites--throughout the re-gion, according to the SanBernardino County Department of

Public Health. Nonetheless, healthprofessionals are taking precau-tions to inform the communityabout its effects.“Even though no immediatethreat to county residents exists, Iwould like to remind residents toprotect themselves and family

members from mosquito bites, es-pecially if traveling to Zika-af-fected countries.” said CountyHealth Officer Dr. MaxwellOhikhuare.According to the Center for Dis-ease Control (CDC), 35 stateshave dealt with Zika cases. Those

who have contracted the diseasedid so due to their travel to af-fected regions across the globe. The countries and territories thathave reported active transmissionare located in the Caribbean, Cen-tral American, and South America. The Pan American Health Organ-ization (PAHO) issued a warningto Brazilian residents in May 2015regarding the first confirmed Zikavirus infection. The outbreak ofthe virus in Brazil led to reports ofGuillain-Barré syndrome andpregnant women giving birth tobabies with birth defects and poorpregnancy outcomes. The Zika virus is transmitted topeople by the Aedes aegypti andAedes albopictus mosquitoes--thesame mosquitoes that can transmitdengue and chikungunya viruses.Despite not being native to Cali-fornia, these type of mosquitoes--which causes sudden fever andacute pains in the joints--the longlegged flies have been identified in12 California counties. According to a statement pro-vided by the San BernardinoCounty Department of PublicHealth’s Division of Environmen-tal Health Services, the majority ofpeople infected with Zika virus donot develop symptoms. Whilehealth professionals say there is nospecific treatment for the Zika

virus, the County Department ofHealth said the best methods totreat it are supportive care, rest, fluids and fever relief. “If symptoms do develop, theyare usually mild and include fever, joint pain, rash and eye redness,”the statement reads. “If you havereturned from an affected countryand have these symptoms withintwo weeks, or any other symptomsfollowing your return; please con-tact your medical provider and tellthe doctor where you have trav-eled.”Colton resident Andres PalaciosSr. attributes the rise of the diseaseto the lack of sanitation and mal-nutrition in the affected countries, and expressed the importance ofensuring one’s health through theintake of natural foods.“Without proper sanitation andgood medical care, these peoplewill grow up weak and have fail-ing immune systems overtime. Alot of the viruses and illnesses area result of the poor diets we havein [the Americas],” he said. “It’simportant that people find ways totake care of their bodies. We alsoneed to find doctors that will pin-point solutions.”For questions or concerns, con-tact the County of San BernardinoDepartment of Public Health at(800) 442-2283.
