-nal weather forecasts and break-ing weather news on a daily,multi-hour basis. But before she delved into thecommunications field, Eggerspent most of her time involved inextracurricular activities both atGrand Terrace Junior High Schooland Colton High School. She re-members the fond memories shehad acting as the Yellowjacket’spep commissioner and organizingevents with close friends as mem-bers of the Associated StudentBody (ASB). “It was a very tight group of usfriends who were very involved inASB,” Egger explained. “We triedto make the experience as best aswe could for the students by or-ganizing the prom and otherthings.”In addition, Egger remembersthe influence of one of her teach-

ers, Mrs. Wescam who had atremendous impact on her growthas a person.“Mrs. Wesca was a big deal anda big inspiration,” she said. “Shehelped guide us and lead theschool with enthusiasm. We weregiven a lot of freedom as studentsand it allowed us to become inde-pendent.”Those experiences with leader-ship and independence have al-lowed for Egger to pursue herdreams of working alongsidesome of the best media profes-sionals. A few days ago, she filledin for fellow meteorologist FritzColeman during NBC4’s eveningnewscast. That evening, sheworked alongside Chuck Henryand Colleen Williams--two re-porters she followed growing up.And despite being under heavypressure due to the high intensityand demand in the newsroom,

Egger views every day at NBCUniversal as a “fresh start”.“I love that every day is a newday,” Egger said. “I get a freshstart on air and there is always aweather story. People here inSouthern California don’t realizethat there is so much weather totalk about, whether it’s talkingabout a storm or tracking a hurri-cane.”Egger will be making an appear-ance at the Inland Center Mall inSan Bernardino on WednesdaySeptember 24 from 5 a.m. to 11a.m. She will be giving out freebreakfast and coffee (or juice), aswell as interacting with residents. collaboration with the ColtonJoint Unified School District andBank of America during thechamber’s monthly workshop onTuesday September 16.According to Jeff Hayes’, “PayEquity and Discrimination; Gen-der Wage Gap” report released bythe Institute for Women’s PolicyResearch last year, women, on av-erage, earn less than men in virtu-ally every single occupation.Additionally, the gender wage gapis not projected to close until theyear 2058, meaning that most ofthe women working today will notsee equal pay during their work-ing lives. The organization believes thatthey can close the gender wagegap sooner than 2058 if they part-ner with local businesses to ad-dress accessibility issues. “For too many low income girls, poverty and lack of resources pre-vents their participation in con-structive extracurricular activitieswhere they can learn the leader-ship skills that ultimately impacttheir ability to prioritize educa-tion, obtain employment, accesshealth care, and afford decenthousing,” said Hawley. “In addi-tion, Girl Scouts recognizes thatjobs in America today are goingunfilled for lack of skilled work-ers and is taking the steps now toexpand the country's pool of to-morrow's qualified workers, edu-

cators, and innovators by expos-ing girls to opportunities thatbuild their leadership skills.”Hawley’s presentation gave in-sight on the “Step Up: Be a Voicein your Community” where GirlScouts participate in a two partevent. Local female elected offi-cials and female community lead-ers are collaborating todemonstrate to the young girls(ages 11-13) how they can be-come involved in their commu-nity.Some of the activities the girlsparticipate in are mock city coun-cil meetings, as well as visitinglaw enforcement agencies, andparticipating in mock employ-ment interviews. Local femaledignitaries who have supportedthe program are: Supervisor Jan-ice Rutherford, AssemblywomenCheryl Brown, Mayor SarahZamora, City Council MemberVirginia Marquez, City Clerk GigiHanna, City Clerk Eileen Gomez,School board members MargaretHill and Abigail Medina. The long term objective of theprogram is for participants tomake more informed decisions re-garding their education and careerchoices and begin to see them-selves in a leadership role (Just 1in 5 girls believe they have whatit takes to lead Roper Research,2012). The other component of the pro-gram consists of Girl Scout Alum-nae Association members

connecting with the girls to helpthem explore various careers, re-lated educational requirements, role modeling, and coaching op-portunities. In addition, Alumnaewill help the participants create aportfolio for their college applica-tions and resumes. So far the program has collabo-rated with Fiesta Village, the Ri-alto Fire Department, the SanBernardino Sheriff’s Department,BNSF Railway, Arrowhead Re-gional Medical Center, and theSan Bernardino Valley CollegeDistrict.Debbie Gradias, board chair ofthe Girl Scouts San GorgonioCouncil and Colton native said itis great that businesses in the cityare looking into partnering withher organization to best serve theyoung girls in the CJUSD.“Some of these students don’thave the mannerisms to sit and doa successful interview,” she said.“They need that baptism underfire. It’s great that businesses arecoming in to help. Who better toget it from? They’ll be getting thatdirect feedback.”

County review team attempts to limit suspiciousdeaths to elders

By Harvey M.Kahn

When an elder persondies suspiciously, mostsay it's almost always

written off as a natural cause. Many jurisdictions don't haveenough funding to perform autop-sies on 75-year-olds. In SanBernardino County most of thoseover the age-65 are given autop-sies. Prosecutors say even thougha pattern of elder abuse appears tohave obviously caused a death, itstill may not be enough to presscharges. That doesn't mean that thedeath won't get scrutinized by theSan Bernardino County ElderDeath Review Team.Since 2003, the multi-agency SanBernardino County Elder DeathReview Team (SBCEDRT) haslooked at nearly every death ofthose 65 and older. The SanBernardino County District Attor-ney relies on medical examinersand coroners to build cases, al-though their evidence is still notalways enough."Our presence means there aremore eyes watching those who tryto abuse the elderly," said MarleneLeyva, of the San BernardinoCounty Coroner's Office, whoserves as chair to the Elder DeathReview Team. Leyva said theelder death review team seeks to

get county agencies to communi-cate better with each other. Shefurther explained the Elder DeathReview Team does not investigate, but instead identifies probablehomicides from existing deathdata.Suspicious deaths occurring atnursing homes or assisted livingfacilities are hard to track sincesome victims are pronounced deadat a local hospital. "Wherever thatperson is pronounced dead is con-

sidered the official site," said ElderAbuse spokesperson Tristan Svare,of the San Bernardino County Dis-trict Attorney's Office. "We do nottrack to see if that person wastransported to a hospital from anursing home." Svare says a major cause of therise of suspicious deaths to the eld-erly is because those 65-over arethe fastest growing segment of thepopulation. "The services are notkeeping up with their needs."

Svare notes that members of thecounty review team are understrict rules of confidentiality. Hedid say that lack of proper trainingat community living facilities andof law enforcement contributes tosome unsolved elder deaths. Svarethinks added protection for whistleblowers and more cooperationfrom law enforcement is needed."You and I have a pretty goodidea of what caused a death. Gath-ering the evidence is another mat-ter," adds Svare, who calledsuspicious deaths at nursinghomes a systemic problem. Mean-while, Leyva said that confiden-tiality was once so strict that SanBernardino County agencies weredenied access to each other's files."Five years ago neither the reviewteam nor the coroner could get in-formation from adult protectiveservices. We can now."Leyva explained that all perti-

nent agencies of the team meetonce a month in a round table for-mat in closed session. She saidSBCDRT is trying to expand itsroster in an effort to serve as a cen-tral clearinghouse. Along with thecoroner, district attorney, adultprotective services and departmentof aging, the team includes city at-torney's, law enforcement andcounty health officials. "We wantto change with the times and comeup with prevention strategies to

slow elder abuse. We are all serv-ice provider's who want to domore for the community," statedLeyva. She echoed Svare's commentabout adhering to strict confiden-tiality. "We never release statis-tics," said Leyva. The SBCDRT isgoverned by the California StatePenal Code 11174.4 through11174.9. Those codes treat muchof the circumstances surroundingsuspicious deaths akin to lawyer-client or patient-physician privi-lege.The penal code appears to

strengthen confidentiality with un-derlying sections. However, it con-tains contradictions and lot's of"ifs" and "maybes." The penalcode states the completion of a re-view "may be" disclosed at the dis-cretion of a majority of the deathreview team. Leyva said that at thecounty level, there has never beenthe results of a suspicious elderdeath review released to themedia. With all the safeguards of confi-dentiality through the penal code, its last section states that Informa-tion gathered shall be used to de-velop education, prevention and ifnecessary prosecution strategies"that will lead to improved coordi-nation of services for families andthe elder population."

Words to Think About:Resolving Differences

By G. W. Abersold Ph.D.

For the past decade and ahalf Iraq has been in thenews. Mainly because of

the two wars fought with the USA.Evidence now reveals that wewanted their oil.The reason Washington used wasthe lie that Saddam Hussein hadWMD (Weapons of Mass Destruc-tion). Previously the oil industryhad been nationalized. After themilitary victory, that was changed. So that private oil companies-likeHalliburton-could own the oil.The 36 million people in Iraq arebasically Muslim. Sixty three per-cent are Shiites, thirty-four percentare Sunnis and three percent areChristians and Jews. Most of theChristians speak Aramaic, whichwas the language that Jesus spoke. There are almost 3 billion Chris-tians in the world today. There are2.09 billion Muslims. The latter isdivided into Sunnis and Shiites.Their schism dates back to the 7thcentury disagreement over succes-sion after the death of the ProphetMuhammad in 632 A.D.The Shiites followed theProphet’s family and the Sunnishonor Abu Bakr a close compan-

ion of the Prophet. That holds truetoday.Historians call Iraq “the cradle ofcivilization.” Bible scholars be-lieve the Garden of Eden was inthe southern part of the country.Abraham, the father of Judaism,Christianity and Muslim camefrom the land of Ur, also in Iraq.Nineveh, made famous by Jonahis in the north. The Bible speaksmuch of the Babylonians, the As-syrians and the Persians. All threedominated Iraq at one time or an-other. Israel was wiped out bythem in 722 and 582 BCE.Ten thousand years ago Iraq wascalled Mesopotamia; which lasteduntil 334 BCE when it was con-quered by Alexander the Great. The first dominate people of thearea were Sumerians. They goback before the Egyptians. Theybegan as a primitive people whowere primarily hunters and gather-ers.From them came the very begin-ning of civilization, including theHanging Gardens of Babylon-oneof the 7 wonders of the world. Many of history’s greatest devel-opments took place in the Sumer-ian dynasty. By the year 4000 BCEthe people had developed villagesand towns and the city of Ur in3500 BCE. The Sumerians weredominating until 2000 BCE.They had developed the firstwriting system, the first code oflaw (the Code of Hammurabi),farming techniques like crop rota-tion and had developed a system ofmathematics including the use ofthe “zero.”They also were the first ones touse a “wheel.” They also devel-

oped the hoe, the rake, the shovel.Trade was established with no-madic tribes. They also had a sys-tem of irrigation canals and dikes. They were the first to use copperand bronze; maps and calendars. They built carts, made pottery andwere the first people to develop awritten language.Literary experts describe the fa-mous Epic of Gilgamesh as, “acollection of folklore, stories andmyths which was the most famousliterary achievement to come outof Mesopotamia.”Many Egyptian, Greek and Jew-ish stories are based on it. For ex-ample the Epic and the Bible haveparallel stories: Adam and Eve,Noah, the flood, Tower of Babel,Jonah and Job.The Sumerians were also the firstpeople to establish schools, writingand an accounting system. Theybuilt a system of pyramids, whichthe Egyptians copied.Sumerian culture also establishedmonotheism rather than worship-ing many gods. They developedthe use of iron and were the first tohave iron weapons of warfare. One writer categorically says thatthe greatest contribution to comeout of Mesopotamia was, “the con-cept of time. They were the first toestablish 24 hours in a day, eachhour into 60 minutes and eachminute into 60 second.” The bitter fighting in Iraq todayis between the Shiites and the Sun-nis. They are both Muslim. Theyare similar to the attitudes betweenCatholics and Protestants, 100years ago. Hopefully their differ-ences will be resolved.Amen. Selah. So be it.

Three feet doesn’t seemlike much space, but forbicyclists, the 1 yard

buffer between drivers couldmean a life saving cushion. The California Department of

Motor Vehicles has long sug-gested drivers to pass at a safedistance and has recommendedthree feet. Well now, it's a California law.The Three Feet for Safety Act,

passed by the Legislature andsigned into law by Gov. JerryBrown, requires drivers to main-tain a distance of three feet -- 1yard -- when passing cyclists. Itwent into effect Tuesday. The new law reads: “A driver of

a motor vehicle shall not over-take or pass a bicycle proceedingin the same direction on a high-way at a distance of less thanthree feet between any part of themotor vehicle and any part of thebicycle or its operator.”The new law also states that if a

driver is unable to give a cyclistthree feet, due to traffic or roadconditions (including weatherand width of road), should slowdown "and may only pass whendoing so would not endanger thesafety of the operator of the bi-cycle."Drivers who break the law will

get a $35 ticket, and if they hit acyclist, the fine jumps to $225.But there are no fines for cy-

clists who get too close to cars. With that said, bicyclists are re-

sponsible for following safetyrules as well, meaning, makingsure they’re riding with trafficand not against it.So, is the new rule impossible

for drivers to follow?

Not really, just pay attention tothe road and drive with cautionas you should be. California joins 22 other states

requiring drivers to keep theirdistance from bikes, and like anynew rules, it is bound to causeconfusion and raise concerns. The California Bicycle Coali-

tion, CalBike - the group spear-heading “I Give 3” — anoutreach campaign aimed at edu-cating the public about the lawand why it’s so crucial for mo-torists to give at least threefeet distance when passing a bi-

cyclist -- offers an idea on howto gauge if a driver is three feetaway or spilling into that bicyclebuffer zone.“Motorists park their cars with

enough space so they can openthe passenger-side door —which is about three feet wide —without hitting another car orwall. That’s how much clearancethey should give a bicyclist whenpassing in the same lane. Or, mo-torists could just simply changelanes in most cases.”Other concerns including who’s

measuring; what if moving threefeet to the left to pass meansgoing into oncoming traffic;what if a cyclist veers into thebuffer zone; and will I really geta ticket, are also discussed on thegroups website, calbike.org. Locally in Redlands, the city is

asking for resident input for its2014 Bicycle Master Plan - aneffort to add more bike lanesthroughout the city and createroutes that will navigate throughbusiness areas, schools and thedowntown area. The plan is currently being up-

dated and those interested in pro-vided recommendations forroutes and bicycling improve-ments can visit the RedlandsBikeways Network availablethrough the city’s website. Pro-vided on the site is an interactivemap that shows the various rec-ommendations included in thecommunity plan. All public input will be consid-

ered in the revisions made to theplan and the map, which will beclosed for comments on Sept.25th.

Improve yourself, Rialto.

Returning home to Rialto aftergraduating from college and 22-plus years as a public school edu-cator, I am reminded of the IKEAcommercial (the one where par-ents virtually eliminate their son’sbedroom to make way for a newstate-of-the-art kitchen). I ask you, city of Rialto: What is it that youhave to offer?

Moments ago I watched ABC 7’scoverage of a new video made byClaremont designed to attracttourists. I ask: What would Rialtoinclude in its own video? Have our

city leaders gone to sleep whileneighboring cities work? VictoriaGardens, Ontario Mills, CentralPark, Pacific Electric Trail, Clare-mont Village, Claremont Colleges,Auto Speedway, Quakes Stadium... these attractions surround us!Trader Joe’s? A movie theater?Sprouts? Whole Foods? LA Fit-ness, Gold’s, Bally’s?

What is happening here in Ri-alto? What is family entertainmenthere in Rialto?

Are city planners on hiatus? Our“downtown” area (Riverside Av-enue) is hardly walk-able. Where

exactly does one ride a bike or runhere in the city? Have you drivenor walked the existing routes? They are few and perilous (ran-dom dogs, litter, uneven/brokenpavement). The number of vacant, overgrown lots is shameful. Weare rife with brown lawns, vacanthomes and retail centers.

It would seem that our leadersare encouraging residents to shop, dine and enjoy parks elsewhererather than bringing that revenuehome!

Councilman Gonzales MisleadsMany members of Citizens for

Colton First are angry and dis-mayed due to the actions and com-ments made by Mr. Gonzales atthe last Council Meeting. He madenumerous false, misleading and in-flammatory statements regardingCitizens for Colton First.

For example, he stated that a re-cent complaint filed with the cityby members of the public, wasdone on behalf of Citizens forColton First. This is simply nottrue! Let me be very clear on this:Citizens for Colton First had ab-solutely nothing to do with thecomplaint filed nor did most mem-bers of the group have any knowl-edge of such complaint until it wasreported in the local newspapers.

For Mr. Gonzales to say anythingotherwise is nothing but false andmisleading!

Mr. Gonzales went on and statedseveral other things that were notonly untrue, but inflammatory andpotentially slanderous. Of coursenone of these statements were true.

As a Council Member, Mr. Gon-zales has taken a pledge to obeyand follow rules as outlined in thecouncil policy manual, CouncilEthics and Norms. It is my opinionthat Mr. Gonzales has not beentruthful, has not shown respect andcivility to the citizens as requiredin the policy and appears to beconducting his own personalagenda while on the Dias, to name

just a few of the violations.

At the next council meeting, Iwill be asking the city council totake action against Mr. Gonzalesand hold him accountable for hisreprehensible actions. The citizensof this city deserve better!

I also call on Mr. Gonzales to re-tract his false and misleading state-ments and apologize to themembers of Citizens for ColtonFirst.

Corrupting Our PoliticsA recent Wall Street

Journal/NBC poll showed a re-markable 79% of Americans arefed up with our political system. With continued dispiriting newsabroad, dysfunction in Washingtonand a general stagnation of theeconomy, it’s no wonder theAmerican people have lost faith.

Particularly now, with CitizensUnited, our democratic processhas been overtaken by narrow cor-porate interests. It’s about powerand influence, not about voters and

constituents. Excessive campaignspending doesn’t just dirty our pol-itics and corrupt individual elec-tions, it also undermines our faithin the system.

In the past our democratic systemhas brought us back from thebrink, time and again, by respond-ing to the changing needs of peo-ple. It’s the lack of faith in thesystem that troubles me most.

We need to shift our attentionaway from day to day problems

and understand how the corruptinginfluence of money permeates allthe challenges we’re trying to ad-dress. Outcomes beneficial to allof us on everything from food anddrug regulation to global warmingare dependent on serious campaignfinance reform. Only when peoplefeel they are heard by our politicalsystem will their optimism return, and, I’d bet, be followed by betternews on many fronts.

The GOP has done nothing for America’s middle classAlmost every day, I read opinions submitted by Republicans, the tea

party or the religious right talkingabout the same things: anti-Obamathis or the government that, or con-traception is bad.

What the Democratic Party hasdone for the middle class is obvi-ous and well-documented: every-thing from Social Security,Medicare, civil rights, to the five-day work week and the minimumwage — just to name a few.

So, here are my two questions:

Can anyone name one singlething that the Republican Party hasdone to benefit the middle class?Second, can anyone name one pas-sage in the Bible where it says, specifically, that contraception isprohibited?

Hope to hear from those whothink that restricting a women’sright to any form of contraceptionis acceptable.

Young Advocates aim to curb underage drinkingin San Bernardino

By MJ Duncan

In a concerted, continued ef-fort to curb crime in SanBernardino, numerous organ-

izations have sprouted in order to

identify systemic issues that con-tribute to the city’s high crime rate. One such group is Young Advo-cates of San Bernardino, a groupof Cal State San Bernardino col-lege students whose goal is to pre-

vent alcohol and drug use amongyouth by advocating for policychange that will effect a healthierand safer city.On Wednesday, Sept. 10, mem-bers of Young Advocates wentdoor-to-door in a four-block areain San Bernardino famous for itsloud parties and high crime tospeak with residents and distributeinformation about the city’s SocialHost law. The area canvassed bythe group is just north of Baselinebetween North Sierra Way andNorth Sepulveda Avenue. Five ad-dresses in this area account for halfof the addresses identified on thecity’s “Top 10 Locations for LoudMusic/Party Calls for Service” list.“Underage drinking is a problemhere and we want to change that,”said Gabrielle Casasola, a memberof The Young Advocates of SanBernardino, a group working toprevent underage alcohol and druguse. She added that research indi-cates that house parties are the pri-mary source of alcohol for minorsand that’s what the city’s SocialHost law, which makes it illegal toprovide a venue for underagedrinking, is intended to curb.According to Casasola, manySan Bernardino residents are un-aware that the Social Host law ex-ists, adding that understanding therisks of underage drinking how thelaw works is vital to changing theway people think about underagedrinking.Anyone convicted of violatingthe city’s Social Host law faces upto six months in jail and a $1,000fine.“Underage drinking is a risky be-havior that can lead to tragic re-sults,” said Lt. Richard Lawheadof the San Bernardino Police De-

partment. “Adults need to under-stand that it’s not only against thelaw to provide alcohol to minors,it’s also illegal to provide the placefor them to drink.”Over the past two years SBPDhas responded to an average ofover 300 loud music/party callseach month. Those calls for serv-

ice are one indicator experts asso-ciate with underage drinking par-ties. According to data collectedby the San Bernardino CountyDUI Program Providers betweenJuly 2008 and June 2009, nearlythree-quarters of all DUI offendersin the county said they’d gottentheir alcohol at a private residence.

4400 Project brings history to life at Constitution Day in RedlandsBy Yazmin Alvarez

Dozens of youth markedtheir place in history lastweek by signing their

names to a few historic docu-ments, the Declaration of Inde-pendence and the U.S.Constitution.The memorable experience ofscribbling down their own “JohnHancock” onto the documents waspart of the 4400 Project’s 4th an-nual Constitution Day celebrationat Smiley Park in Redlands. The Colonial America-timedevent is an effort to make U.S. his-tory an exciting learning experi-ence for children and adults alike, said organizers. In helping bring history to life, members of the Mountain Fifesand Drums corps trotted through-out the park performing colonial-style music and dressed in garbrepresentative of the historic era, while others sat around in the Sonsof American Revolution Encamp-ment.This year’s theme, “We The Peo-ple; Citizens in a Republic,” of-fered youngsters the opportunityto participate in legislative actionsby writing their representative and

earning the right to vote -- for clas-sic cars on display around thepark, said organizers. The process included registeringto vote, filling out a sample ballot, learning about the candidates andstepping into an “official” votingbooth to cast their ballot. All who voted, received their “IVoted.” Along with historical reenact-ments, this year’s celebration alsofeatured a musical lineup with per-formances by the 1940’s stylethree-part harmony of the LindySisters with a special salute totroops, and an afternoon perform-ance from the Citrus Valley HighSchool Blackhawk Theater Com-pany.A special exhibit themed aroundthe time period was also show-cased at the Lincoln Shrine.Hundreds attend ConstitutionDay at Smiley Park each year andorganizers hope it becomes a sig-nature event in Redlands. To learn more about the 4400Project, visit 4400project.org.

Golf tournament, 5K run raises funds for Future Leadersprogram, celebrates life of fallen mentor

By Anthony Victoria

Just last month, the InlandEmpire Future Leaders(IEFL) program held its 30th

leadership conference in Idyllwild. They are quickly planning andraising funds for their 31st event. The non-profit organization heldits Fifth annual Golf Tournamentand the Crazy College Dash 5Krun on Friday September 12 at the

Jurupa Hills Country Club inRiverside. The organization which is widelyrecognized for its philanthropicwork in mentoring middle schooland high school freshmen studentswas founded in 1985 by Dr. TomRivera, Dean Emeritus at Cal StateSan Bernardino and communityorganizer. In the 30 years the pro-gram has operated, it has gradu-ated over 3,600 students. Many ofthe graduates have gone on to at-tend schools in the CSU and UCsystems, as well as several IvyLeague schools like Harvard andPrinceton. Redlands mayor and31st Congressional district candi-

date Pete Aguilar (D) is a graduateof the program.Over one-hundred and fifty peo-ple participated in both events, al-though the most popular event wasthe golf tournament. And although there were wasonly one team who took home the1st place trophy, in the eyes of Dr.Tom Rivera, all who contributedand participated were winners.“When we look at our success,99 % of the kids who participate inour program graduate from highschool,” he said. “Thank you allvery much for helping the programthroughout.”A strong emphasis was placed on

celebrating the life of Art Arzola,an educational counselor whoworked for Humboldt State Uni-versity. Arzola was one of the tenvictims who lost their life in theOrland bus crash on April 10. Inaddition to his job as a counselor,he was instrumental in helping fu-ture leaders as one of the pro-gram’s coordinators. Longtime friend and IEFLalumni Dante Rios said Arzola’scommitment to the program in-spired him to continue to mentor

the youth. He demonstrated aslideshow to the people in atten-dance and encouraged them to do-nate to the Art Arzola ScholarshipFoundation.“The camp was near and dear tohis heart,” he said. “This continuesto be important to all the delegates, the youth of the Inland Empire andthe Coachella Valley. In thoseshort five days that they go tocamp, they can make friendshipsthat could last them a lifetime.”

Art conference provides insight on efforts to strengthen art scene in Inland Empire

By Anthony Victoria

Artists and community or-ganizers from across SanBernardino County gath-

ered at the Victoria Gardens Cul-tural Center on SaturdaySeptember 13 for an all-day con-ference that included workshopsand motivational speeches. The Arts Connection of SanBernardino County, founded inJanuary of 2013, held the event forthe purpose of gathering artists, administrators, and advocates to-gether to share ideas and opinions, according to interim executive di-rector Julia Tilley.

“Our goal is to bring in fantasticspeakers and organize workshopsfor our artists could come in andlearn,” she said. “That’s ultimatelywhat we love to do. We wantartists to continue to learn andgrow to make their organizationsstronger.”The conference began with anopening introduction by Tilley andboard chair Kathryn Ervin, fol-lowed by keynote speeches fromSan Bernardino County Supervi-sor Janice Rutherford and Califor-nia Arts Council executive directorCraig Watson. Shortly after, sev-eral professionals conducted work-shops based on art administration,

performing arts, and visual arts. The afternoon portion of the con-ference featured three roundtablediscussions based on communityengagement, audience building, innovative fundraising, and theimpact of volunteers. Local youth organizers from SanBernardino Generation Now ledthe discussions on community en-gagement and audience buildingand explained to several profes-sionals in attendance about the im-portance of reaching out to thecommunity.“How do you reach out? How doyou get your point across to some-one,” said Jorge Heredia. The 23-year-old proceeded to askeveryone in attendance to confronta stranger and shake their hand. “Saying hello is a really simplething to do,” he said. “And it’spowerful. But the younger gener-ations have lost the ability to dothat in a sense.”Several of the professionals whoattended Generation Now’s work-shop provided input on variousways that organizations couldbuild an audience. Grace Kanessoof Rancho Cucamonga said Face-book is her way of providing infor-mation about her painting classesto the general population.“When I sat next to Mandy to lether know what I was doing, she al-ready knew about it,” she said.Kaiser High School art teacherKathleen Fox said she makesposters and places them through-out the school“How that can translate to thecommunity is by doing similarthings on public radio, speaking topeople at popular hangouts, those

are just my ideas.”The conference concluded withDaniel Foster’s insight on the im-portance of community building inthe non-profit sector. As the Exec-utive Director of the OceansideMuseum of Art for the past twoyears, Foster has instituted signif-icant strategic visioning, program-matic growth, and outreach intothe region, resulting in 30% mem-bership growth and 45% growth inthe museum’s annual operatingrevenues and budget. He was in-strumental in leading a 60-membertask force for two years that raisedabout $350,000 to design andlaunch the Arts Connection of San

Bernardino County. “Competition should not exist inthe non-profit world,” said Foster.“The recipe of the 21st Century iscollaboration. This is not some-thing that is special. It’s reallycommon sense. When that hap-pens, it can change everything.”Tilley remains optimistic. Shebelieves the conference is the cat-alyst to the growth of the InlandEmpire art scene.“We have struggled just likesome of the other non-profit or-ganizations, but we need to be ac-cessible,” she said. “It’s importantthat we provide help and encour-agement to our local artists.”

and be the best he can, and he did,”said Kaiser head coach Phil Ze-laya.The turnover did not lead to ascore, in fact Cajon got the ballback and marched 55 yards to setup a three-yard scoring run byJaylen Stocklin to tie the game 14-14 with 2:55 left in the third.Kaiser looked poised to take thelead with 5:30 left in the fourthafter a 17-play, 69-yard drive set
