At the right place, at the right moment, right spirit

On Friday, December 21 this reporter and Colton City ClerkEileen Gomez stopped by Food Connection on Valley Blvd. forlunch and right at the very moment we entered the restaurant, anelderly man, Howard Shaw, 76, who was sitting in the very firstbooth, started coughing and choking on his food. Gomez ran overto the table and helped him as best as possible given that he wasseated and it was impossible to do a full Heimlich maneuver, andwithin a few moments, Shaw was no longer choking and took afew sips of water. Before leaving the restaurant, Shaw, a lifelongColton resident (Colton High 1956) came over to our table to thankGomez once again and the two exchanged a warm hug. “I thankher very much,” Shaw said of Gomez’s intervention.

tomers became my friends.”Salazar added that many of his

customers opened up to himabout their lives and often soughthis advice.

“I’m going to miss seeing themand finding out about some of thedecisions they’ve made,” he said.

Raised in Colton, Salazar grad-uated from Colton High in 1960and shortly thereafter attendedbarber college. He started work-ing at was then called Charlie’sBarbershop, and location wise,on the corner of Mill and Ranchoin what is now the Stater Brosshopping center, has been theresince. In 1974 he bought thebusiness and in the 70s and 80she and his brother Al becamepartners for a while, thus thename, “Los Hairmanos”, a playon the words “hermanos” (broth-ers).

As a barber, Salazar has experi-enced the fashion and stylechanges throughout the decades, from flattops, to the Beatles stylehair during the 60s, the longer, feathery styles of the 70s and be-yond.

He also had many second and

third generation customers, butstates that the “old timers” are byfar his largest clientele.

And just who were some of thenotable Colton “royalty” that LosHairmanos served?

“I gave Ken Hubbs his last hair-cut,” Salazar said, recalling see-ing Colton’s beloved baseballicon come into the shop with apilots manual just days before hisairplane accident.

Past and current clients also in-clude Camilo Carreon (his wife’suncle), Max Lofy, (then Mayor)Councilman Fran Gonzalez,Jerry Rios, Jim Hayes, Council-man Isaac Suchil, Ernie Cisneros,Jerry Young, former Colton Po-lice Chief Jack Stratton, RayAbril Jr., Rick Sanders, whoplayed Minor League DodgerBaseball, Jack Lasby and severalof the 1954 Little League WorldSeries Champions, includingDanny Carrasco, Norm Houselyand others.

And in between cutting so muchhair, Salazar and his wife Lucywere also very involved parentswho supported their four daugh-ters in Carl Rimbaugh Girls Soft-ball by managing the concessions

stand.Third District Councilman

Frank Navarro was one ofSalazar’s clients and says hehopes to find a new barber soonwho will provide a comparablelevel of service to Salazar.

“He has great respect for hiscustomers and he cares aboutdoing the best job possible,”Navarro said. “We always en-joyed great conversation, he wasvery friendly, easy going andgood natured. I have a lot of re-spect for him.”

But even though he won’t becutting their hair anymore,Salazar leaves his faithful cus-tomers with a few tips on select-ing their new barber.

“Don’t say short or long,” hesays. “Just ask for a trim and gofrom there.”

Saying long or short may not re-sult in the desired outcome be-cause the customers and barbermay have a different opinion ofwhat is short or long.

“I always left it a little longerbecause I could make it shorter, but if it was too short couldn’tput it back,” he concluded. “I didthat with all my customers.

She wasn’t sure what she wasgoing to do with her time, butcertainly didn’t expect to bedoing what she does today.

“God had another plan for me,”she said.

Around that time, her sonRichard Gaona Jr., whom sherefers to as her prodigal son, wasat a place where he was turninghis life around for the better afterbattling his own demons, so tospeak. He told her he felt theneed to do something to helpothers.

And thus, Seeds of Hope wasborn, an organization that helps,in Gaona’s own words, “theworking poor”, families whohave homes and jobs but are stillvery poor and struggling for sur-vival. As someone who has alsoexperienced great need in thepast, she understands the strug-gle.

“We want to bring dignity backto the people,” Gaona said.

Today, Seeds of Hope providesa wide array of social servicesand information and referrals. If

someone is in need of food, do-mestic violence assistance, hous-ing information and other needs,Seeds of Hope does their best toprovide or help find the servicethey need.

And like many other organiza-tions, during the holidays theyalso provide turkeys and toys. This Thanksgiving they gave out100 turkeys and on Saturday,December 22, in partnershipwith Leno’s Rico Taco, theygave out toys to 350 childrenwho may not otherwise have hadany Christmas gifts.

The event drew strong commu-nity support including MayorSarah Zamora, Councilman IsaasSuchil, City Clerk Eileen Gomezand others who came out toenjoy the morning and help put asmile on children’s faces.

“Everyone who signed up got atoy,” Gaona said.

And as soon as the holidays areover the work won’t stop; theywill continue to work hard toserve those in need as best theycan.

Seeds of Hope, a non-profit 501

c 3 organization, is a family runoperation made up of Gaona andher husband of 41 years,Richard, their two sons Richardand Steve and daughter in lawAngelina, plus a host of volun-teers.

Every Friday after working agraveyard shift at his job, SteveGaona picks up donations forSeeds Of Hope’s Friday commu-nity food giveawys, and An-gelina, who serves as Gloria’sassitant, wears many differenthats, doing whatever needs to bedone.

As head of the organization,Gloria Gaona leads by example.

“I won’t ask anyone to do any-thing I’m not willing to do,”Gaona said about the level ofcommitment and service that sheadheres to. “I thank God I’m ableto do what I do. I love it.”

Seeds Of Hope is located at 582West Valley Blvd. Ste. 9 inColton. For more information onthe organization or to schedulean appointment, call (909) 856-0741.

To the Grinch who stole ourChristmas: We would like to haveour Grinch back, he has been inthe family for many years andspent every Christmas with us. Wecan't believe you would come andtake him right off the door step inthe middle of the night. It brokethe kids' hearts to hear he wasgone and they would like to havehim back.

I hope your heart that is three-sizes-too-small will start to growevery time you look at him andthat in time you will bring ourGrinch back to us.

If anyone finds that there is nowa new stand-up. 4-foot Grinch in aSanta costume that moves andplays music with plugs by his feet(cord will be missing) in your yardor house that doesn't belong to

you, please bring him back. Youcan drop him off in the yard orcontact the San Bernardino PoliceDepartment.

Please bring back my children'sChristmas cheer. It would mean alot to us, thanks.

KATHLEEN HARRISON San Bernardino

want to give the San BernardinoPolice Department men andwomen a hardy Merry Christmasand a safe new year. Starting withthe dispatchers, the communityservice officers, volunteers, re-serve officers and the sworn offi-cers. They need our continuedsupport with the unbelievable po-sition this city has put them into.

The dispatchers are the unsungheroes of the Police Department. No dispatchers, no officers wouldbe able to respond to crime. Ofcourse, the PD officers are in thefront line of calls that can go side-ways in an instant. What they get

for this is cut in pay and benefitsand the thinning of our officersthat are retiring and going to otherdepartments that have more stablepay and benefits. Even with theseincredible pressures on them theystill have professionalism beyondbelief. San Bernardino is now hav-ing a lot of calls for attempted sui-cides, robberies, burglaries, manwith a gun calls. These men andwomen risk their lives on thesekind of calls. I can't imagine whatit's like for them to go home aftera shift with all they see.

The city needs to get them back

their full pay and benefits as soonas possible and hire new officers.Even at full pay and benefits theyare underpaid.

As I sit at home warm, knowingthe men and women of SanBernardino Police Department areout in the cold protecting me andmy family and neighbors this hol-iday season, I want to give them ahardy thanks and "good job" forwhat you do for us!

Gratitude to police

s I watched the live Dec. 12 Ri-alto school board meeting, I wasshocked when Mrs. NancyO'Kelly explained that her swear-ing-in was not recorded and wouldnot be televised for the commu-nity.

I feel this showed total disrespectto her, her family, her supportersand the community who voted her

in.

I was able to make it to herswearing-in and saw the tremen-dous support she has and howhappy everyone was for her andher family. This special momentwill live forever in the memory ofher family, friends and supporterswho were able to attend the cere-mony.

Unfortunately, since it was notrecorded the public will never beable to request a copy of that boardmeeting nor will Mrs. O'Kelly beable to share that special moment

with her grandchildren.

I don't understand why the dis-trict would not record such an im-portant event for her and thecommunity. I feel it is unaccept-able and I am embarrassed thatthis was done to her.

Mrs. O'Kelly was elected toserve the community and shouldbe respected as an elected official.

Bring Grinch back

Like most of my neighbors, I putout a few minor Christmas thingsso the neighborhood kids canenjoy the season.

This past Wednesday, as I wentdownstairs to flip the switch onmy snow globe decoration, therewas no sound. Strange, I thought,as I opened the door. And what didI see? A nice bare spot of grasswhere my snow globe used to be.All of the little lawn screws neatlygone (except for one). At least youthieves left my extension cord. It's

kind of sad when at a time of giv-ing we still have those who find itacceptable to steal from others. But it's not like you knocked onmy door and said "give me food,"or "give me clothing," or "give mesomething I can give my child forChristmas." Nope. Instead yousteal a decoration.

Really? You know, if you hadknocked on my door and said "Idon't have anything for Christmasbut it would make my child happyif he/she could have a snow

globe," we would likely havestraight up given it to you. I gave itto my wife as a present on theChristmas before we were marriedand neither of us mind passing onjoy to others.

But to the Grinch who stoleChristmas decorations, I don'twish a lot of joy. Instead, for you,I wish a little shame.

Upper Deck signedDonovan to an exclusive contractin April 2011, making Upper Deckthe exclusive providers of his au-tographed trading cards, memora-bilia and game used equipment.Upper Deck would not reveal theterms of the Donovan contract, butsources said it is a seven-figuredeal.

In a video interview providedby Upper Deck with Donovan, he

said, "it is cool to be on a card, ona magazine cover, or in a videogame. It validates you. It's awe-some. Having an Upper Deck cardcirculating helps a lot with recog-nition. We collected cards as kids, mostly baseball cards." He toldthat his current favorite item tocollect are jersey's of otherplayer's. He said one reason hesigned with Upper Deck was to in-sure fans that they were getting au-thentically signed items. He notedthere are his forged autographs incirculation. "It's frustrating to see."

Upper Deck was selling an of-ficial limited edition 2011 MLSsoccer ball autographed by Dono-van with his MVP inscription for$439.99. An online survey of othercompanies listed his signed jerseyfor $670 and a signed 8x10 framedphoto for $119.99. There is a lim-ited edition large poster signed andin a display case for $1,448. Thehighest end Donovan item was lo-cated at sportsmemorabilia.comwho is selling a game-worn auto-graphed and inscribed uniform in-cluding cleats at $13,157.50. Theuniform was worn in a Los Ange-les Galaxy game against the NewYork Red Bulls and comes with aletter of authenticity and safetyhologram.

"Landon Donovan has nearlysingle-handedly reinvigorated thesport of soccer in the U.S.," said

Jason Masherah, Upper Deck vice-president of marketing. Informa-tion from the Premier Athlete andCelebrity site indicates that Dono-van receives anywhere from$10,000 to $50,000 per speakingappearance. He was honored byESPN in a ceremony held at Red-lands East Valley two years ago,but he did not graduate from there. He spent his senior year at the U.S.Soccer Development Academy inBradenton, Florida. He did playsome matches for REV his junioryear, enough to be named to theParade Magazine All-Americanteam, but most of that season heplayed on the U.S. National Under17 team.

He spent his freshman year atRedlands High and according tomost reports was the Citrus BeltLeague MVP at REV in his soph-omore year. Donovan told TopDrawer Soccer.com that he re-members as a high school fresh-man watching the seniors playing. He recalled the prep hierarchy, where the seniors taught theyoungsters. "I do miss that. I wishI could have gotten to the pointwhere I could have been a seniorand paved the way for the youngerguys. Those couple of years weresome of the best memories of mylife. The bus rides after school togo somewhere to play a game. Itwas just fun."

A life-changing voyage for Coltonman in his quest to help others

By R.A. Contreras

Imagine you are stuck on aslippery, cold, dark moun-tain. You have rocks barely

the size of marbles jutting out ofthe side to hold on to. One slip ofeither your fingers or toes and dis-aster will most probably be immi-nent.

Yet this is where Hector Guzmanwas exactly not too long ago. Andhe placed himself in this harrow-ing situation --- deliberately.

This past September and Octo-ber, Guzman, 20, of Colton, was aparticipant in the Outward Bound(OWB) program, an experientialeducational workshop that utilizesreal-life wilderness training andfocuses teaching participants lead-ership skills by testing their mettlein stressful, yet guided and con-trolled settings.

And fortunately for the SanBernardino Valley College sopho-more, the hanging-on-the-side-of-the-mountain scenario he foundhimself in was controlled: he didhave a rope harness and the benefitof instructors with him; that is notto say, however, that the experi-ence was any less nerve-racking.

“To tell you the truth, out of allthe situations I knew I was goingto face, the rock climbing wasgoing to be the most frightening,”he recalled.

How Guzman found himself inthe planned predicament wassomewhat of a surprising one. Lastyear during the “Occupy” move-ments that sprang up all over thecountry, Guzman, along with hismentor and SBVC Financial AidScholarship coordinator MaryValdemar, decided to start a busi-ness that would focus on helpingthose in the community. As theywere planning what was soon tobecome the Chicano IndigenousCommunity for Culturally Con-scious Advocacy and Action(ChiCCCAA) center, it hit uponValdemar the idea of Guzman ap-plying for the OWB program.

“I attended OWB when I was 17and [now] as an alumnus, I wasable to nominate someone to at-tend, Valdemar said. “It was myfirst experience away from homeand built a confidence that hasspurred my passion for organizingand advocacy. Hector is [actually]

the first student I’ve ever felt com-pelled to nominate. It’s a huge cul-ture shift to take someone fromour community and drop them offin the middle of the wilderness andit is an opportunity that few peopleof color have a chance to benefitfrom,” she reiterated.

Guzman says ever since he waslittle, it had been a lifelong dreamto live out in a wilderness-type set-ting. When he heard of the oppor-tunity from Valdemar, his attitudewas, “Let’s do this!” So began anarduous application processaround March in which he submit-ted mountains of paperwork whichincluded the requisite verifica-tions, disclaimers, and disclosures.

“Mary called me one day in Julyand told me I had been selected, and it was just a big relief,” hesaid. “I couldn’t wait to getstarted.”

Guzman, who was the only par-ticipant selected from California, set out in early September with agroup of 13 students and five in-structors in the Idaho outback thatincluded a river rafting course, for-est and ground expedition, safetytraining, and rock climbing.

Among many of the wonders hewitnessed and experienced werescaling Mount Washington in Ore-gon and whitewater rafting theSalmon River in Idaho. However,on the third day, the reality of thetest got to him. “We had to jumpoff a 20-foot cliff into the river andthat’s when the butterflies hit. Ihad to go back and forth in mymind as I looked down into theriver. I was fighting in my headthinking of the worst-case sce-nario. So I finally said to myself,‘stop thinking about it and do it.’It’s one of those things afterward, once you’re in the water, that youwant to do over and over,” he saidrelieved.

Weeks later into the 50-day ex-pedition, a critical moment camewhen Guzman found himselfstuck up on the side of the afore-mentioned mountain.

“One time I slipped while on Mt.Washington, and went down andfound myself hanging over thecliff. My heart was pounding andI didn’t want to look down. I knewthe only way to get through it wasto get my courage up. No one wasgoing to come and get me,” Guz-man recalled.

Earlier this month, Guzman washonored with a Volunteer ServiceAward from the White House.

“It is good to be appreciated, butit’s most important to continuehelping others,” he says.

He says that a common experi-ence early on in life taught himempathy in an unlikely way.

“When I was 8 years old,I was watching a wrestling pro-gram and one of the wrestlers wasin a scene where he saw a Mexicanfamily coming into the U.S.; hetold them, ‘Get out of our countryyou Mexican [deleted],’ so thatmade a powerful impact on me. Iknew that something wasn’t rightabout that and it was then I knewsomething had to be done.”

He believes in a philosophycalled “decolonization of themind” and says that being open-minded, empowering others andbecoming aware is a powerful wayto improve our communities ---something he feels that is sorelyneeded in light of recent nationaltragedies.

“Doors were opened for me andI want to open doors for others. Ig-norance and fear goes hand inhand because there is a misunder-standing among people. Thisbreeds hatred and many individu-als become isolated. I want peopleto be more open-minded and un-derstanding. We live in an indi-vidualistic society and that’s a bigpart of the problem,” he surmises.

Valdemar, for her part, sees a bright future for her studentand business partner.

“Hector has [now] had an expe-rience that proves what he is capa-ble of. He has a deeper and moreprofound confidence and the abil-ity to tap into something that fewyoung people possess nowadays:wisdom, purpose and integrity. Heis focused and driven to continuethe exhausting and thankless workof trying to make change in thiscommunity. I believe that he willinspire many others through hisleadership to follow the same path. His heart and compassion for ourcommunity will end up benefittinghundreds, maybe thousands of ouryouth and will help empower ageneration to make change.”

Vegans and vegetariansare less likely to developcertain cancers

New findings of a large-scale study at LomaLinda University suggest

that vegans, people who do not eatmeat, poultry, fish, dairy and eggs, are less likely than their non-veg-etarian counterparts to be diag-nosed with cancer, andspecifically receive more protec-tion against female-specific can-cers, such as breast, uterine, ovarian, and other genital cancers.

Findings of the Adventist HealthStudy – 2 (AHS-2) also suggestthat vegetarians who consumedairy and eggs receive more pro-tection from cancers of the gas-trointestinal tract, such as cancersof the colon, stomach, and pan-creas; while vegetarians who eatfish receive protection from can-cers of the respiratory and urinarysystem.

“These findings should give us abetter understanding of the rela-tionships between specific vege-tarian subtypes with specificcancers,” says Dr. Yessenia Tan-tamango-Bartley, a professor atLoma Linda University School ofPublic Health and postdoctoral fel-low with the AHS-2. She is leadauthor of the research, which waspublished in the November onlineissue of Cancer EpidemiologyBiomarkers Prevention.

The findings used prospectivedata, which involves followingsubjects over time, of 69,120 Sev-enth-day Adventists participatingin AHS-2.

All AHS-2 participants filled outa questionnaire that asked howoften they consumed more than200 foods. Participants were thenclassified into a dietary category, based on their responses: Vegans,or people who abstain from meat, poultry, fish, dairy and eggs;Lacto-ovo vegetarians, or people

who consume no meat, poultryand fish; and Pesco vegetarians, orpeople who consume no meat andpoultry.

“By doing this, we can studywhich specific diet has more orless protection from certain can-cers,” says Karen Jaceldo-Siegl,DrPH, head of the AHS-2 nutri-tion section.

Among the study’s findings:An association between vegetar-

ianism, particularly those peoplewho maintain a vegan diet, and allcancers, indicating mild but con-vincing protection from overallcancer risk.

Vegetarians had less gastroin-testinal cancers, including cancersof the colon, pancreas, liver, andstomach, especially among lacto-ovo vegetarians.

Vegan women experiencedfewer female-specific cancers;

Pesco vegetarians seemed tohave protection for cancers of therespiratory and urinary system.

“This study suggests that vege-tarian diets may decrease the inci-dence of all cancers,” says Dr.Gary Fraser, principal investigatorof AHS-2.

The AHS-2 began in 2002 as astudy among members of the Sev-enth-day Adventist Churchthroughout the United States andCanada. The study investigates therole of foods and nutrients, as wellas lifestyles and metabolic risk in-dicators, in causing cancer.

A unique feature of the study isthe participation of Seventh-dayAdventist subjects, a populationwith a wide variety of dietaryhabits, as well as a very low per-centage of alcohol consumption orcigarette smoking, non-dietaryfactors that may otherwise impactthe study.

Todd Jackson Jr. ,9, balances athletics and education

By Naomi Bonman

Most students have a hardtime balancing onesport and excelling in

school, but Todd Jackson Jr., is theopposite. Not only does this youngathlete balance one sport, but hebalances two sports while main-taining straight A’s in school.

“I’ve loved basketball since I waslittle,” Jackson Jr. said.

When he was three and a halfyears old, Jackson Jr. started play-ing basketball with the Redlands

YMCA. By the age of seven hewas able to dribble two balls atonce. Currently he plays basket-ball for a city league where every-one gets a fair chance of being inthe spotlight.

Just as any other kid, Jackson Jr.wanted to expand his sporting ex-perience. This past season he de-cided to play for the Junior MicroRedlands Terriers.

“I like running,” Jackson Jr. said.“And football has a lot of (activi-ties) where you get to run.”

This was not only Jackson Jr,’sfirst football season, but it was alsohis biggest season. He scored fourtouchdowns, became the best run-ning back in his age division andhe was named the All-Conferenceplayer.

As far as sports are concerned,Jackson Jr. plans on winning asuper bowl. His top athletes that helooks up to are Kobe Bryant (LosLakers), Allen Iverson (former76ers player), and Darren McFad-den (Oakland Raiders).

Todd Jackson Sr. commented onhis son’s accomplishments, “Ofcourse my wife and I are veryproud of our son. We always en-courage him to do good in schoolso that one day he will be able toget in a good college and hopefullyget a scholarship.”

Jackson Jr.’s plan as far as his ed-ucation is concerned is to play forUniversity of California Los An-geles (UCLA) and enroll in itsSchool of Medicine. Jackson Jr.wants to become a cardiologist.

“I want to save people’s lives,”he said. “I want to know how peo-ple’s hearts look.”

The San Bernardino SchoolPolice Officers Associa-tion surprised 160 Mon-

terey Elementary School studentsThursday with toys delivered bySaint Nicholas himself.

The toy distribution was madepossible through dues paid by the20-member union and a partner-ship with the Mattel Toy Store inSan Bernardino and AdrenalineCombat Sports.

The POA worked with Montereystaff to identify the neediest stu-dents. On Thursday, those stu-dents were wide-eyed as Santaarrived, not on a sled, but on aDistrict Police squad car, withlights and sirens.

“We could see that the studentswere surprised,” said Officer EricVetere, the union’s vice president.“For many of them, it may be theonly toy they will receive thisChristmas. That’s why it’s sogreat to give back to the children.”

Community celebrates local swearingin for Assemblymember Cheryl Brown

By Cynthia Mendoza

On Friday, December 21,the local community helda second swearing in for

new Assemblymember CherylBrown (47th Assembly District, formerly the 62nd) who was offi-cially sworn in, in Sacramento onMonday, December 3 at the StateCapitol.

Assemblymember Brown repre-sents the 47th Assembly District,

which includes San Bernardino,Rialto, Colton, Bloomington,Fontana, Muscoy, and Grand Ter-race. It is formerly the 62nd Dis-trict, which was vacated by WilmerAmina Carter who did not run forreelection due to term limits.

“In addition to the state cere-mony, which occurred last week, Ihave decided to hold a local swear-ing-in ceremony because so manypeople couldn’t go to Sacramentolast week,” Brown said about herdecision to hold a local swearing-

Sunset Funeral Care comes to Redlands

By Naomi Bonman

Funerals are not only a sadoccasion to plan, but theycan also tend to be quite ex-

pensive. This is why there are fu-neral homes, such as SunsetFuneral Care that want to help fam-ilies reduce the stress and financialburden of funeral arrangements.

“We wanted to make it less overwhelming and comfortable for fam-ilies,” Jennifer Wright, licensed fu-neral director and embalmer, said.

Antonio “Tony” Cuevas Jr., li-censed funeral director added, “Weare saving families a lot of money.”

Sunset Funeral Care was openedon November 17, 2012 by licensedfuneral director and embalmer Jen-nifer Wright and licensed funeraldirector Antonio “Tony” Cuevas Jr.Both Cuevas and Wright wanted tostart their own funeral home.Cuevas studied business while incollege and saw an interest in work-ing in the funeral industry, andfrom there he decided to combinethe two. Wright has always wantedto be a funeral director since shewas a little girl. Cuevas and Wrightlater became business partners andstarted Sunset Funeral Care.

“With the prices of funerals rais-

ing the timing was perfect,” Wrightsaid.

Sunset Funeral Services offers avariety of services to families athalf the cost than their competitorswithin the city and surroundingareas. They also include all-inclu-sive packages that consist of thecasket; professional services; em-balling or refrigeration; dressingand preparation; service programsor prayer cards; and a variety ofother services. There are also directburial and cremation services avail-able.

Since Wright and Cuevas are bothaware of the costs of funeral serv-ices and realize that there are fami-lies out there that need extrafinancial assistance, Sunset FuneralCare also provides several optionsfor financial assistance.

Other financial burdens is plan-ning funerals for veterans. Thereare times when families will comein to make funeral arrangements fortheir loved one that was a veteranand are under the impression thatthe Veterans Adminstration (VA)takes care of everything. However, the VA only takes care of arrange-ments if the death was service re-lated. Sunset Funeral Care offersdiscounts to veterans and theirspouses.

“They (veterans) do a lot of ourCountry, so we wanted to give backto them,” Cuevas said.

Sunset Funeral Care also offersin-home arrangements. For thosewho are unable to drive or make itout to the funeral home. People cancall and have a funeral directorcome and meet them at their house.

In the future Sunset Funeral Carehopes to open up their own ceme-tery and open up homes in Beau-

mont and Yucaipa. By them havingtheir own cemetery it will bring apeace of mind to the families by beable to have everything servicedthrough one company.

In addition to more locations,Wright and Cuevas want to con-tinue to build their community part-nerships. Currently they are part ofthe California Funeral DirectorsAssociation (CFDA), Rotary Clubof Redlands, Bonnes Meres, the

Unforgettables and the Orange BellFuneral Directors. Wright serves asa board member for the Unforget-tables and Orangebell Funeral Di-rectors.

For more information on SunsetFuneral Care please visitwww.sunsetfuneralcares.com orcall (909) 334-4017. They areavailable anytime to answer ques-tions and to assist those with theirfuneral needs.

In light of the horrific mas-sacre that took the lives ofover 20 innocent children in

Sandy Hook, Connecticut earlierthis month, the name of local or-ganization The Unforgettables, andtheir mission, providing burial fi-nancial assistance to families inneed who have lost children, res-onates more than ever in this localcommunity, even though it’s thou-sands of miles away.

“We want to express our condo-lences and sadness,” said The Un-forgettables founder and executiveDirector Tim Evans, adding that atthis time the organization will con-tinue to focus its efforts and re-sources in this area where therecontinues to be a great need.

Regarding Sandy Hook, Evanssaid that he was very moved byPresident Obama’s reading of thenames of the children, somethingThe Unforgettables has always

done in honoring the lives of thosethey bury and memorialize.

“It validates how important thenaming of the children is,” Evansaid of the President’s gesture.

That there would even be a needfor such a service as the The Un-forgettables provides is very said, but given that there is, they haveled the way in doing so first formany Inland Empire families butnow, the need has grown fartherand wider, with the organizationoften receiving requests for helpfor other areas.

They are also in a way pioneers inthis field, so much so that the TheUnforgettables was featured ineHow.com, a reference websitethat offers “how to” guidance andinformation on a wide variety oftopics. They are featured in an ar-ticle called Foundations To HelpPay For Children’s Funerals (directlink, good at time of publication:http://www.ehow.com/info_7905044_foundations-pay-childrens-fu-

nerals.html).What Evans finds noteworthy

about this inclusion is that whileother organizations listed are spe-cific to causes of death or circum-stances, The Unforgettables is oneof the only organizations that serveall needs, regardless of cause ofdeath.

“It shows how unique and specialwe are and that no one else in thecountry is doing what we do,” hesaid.

In 2012, The Unforgettables willhave served 260 families with fu-neral assistance and other basic re-ferral services such as tospecialized mortuaries or counsel-ing.

On Monday, December 31, 2012The Unforgettables will be holdingtheir 13th Annual Lights for LittleLives Memorial Walk, which be-gins at 3:30 p.m. at the Loma LindaRonald McDonald House, 11365Anderson Street, Loma Linda.
