JEFFERSON COUNTY CASE 99-7625Kacey Ruegsegger, DOB/o32982 St. Anthony Hospital Central

On 042099, 10 Gaetano spoke with sgt. Gary Hutchcraft whorequested assistance with a mUlti-agency investigation regardingmultiple shootings at columbine High School in unincorporatedJefferson County.

IQ and Det. James Nelson went to St. Anthony Central Hospitalwhere two victims, Kacey Lynne Ruegsegger IDoa/032982), and MichaelJohnson (DOe/unkl were being treaced for gunshot wounds. Twoadditional victims, Makai Hall and a male with the surname Irelandwere later transported to the hospital"

After arriving at approximately IO gathered informationregarding victim Kacey Ruegsegger while Det, Nelson worked withMakai Hall and Lakewood Detective Quinn Wilhelm was with MichaelJohnson. Denver Detective Joel Humphries accompanied the fourthvictim, a male with the last name of Ireland, to the hospital. Heremained with him at St Anthony Central.

According to staff physician Dr. Drury, Ruegsegger sufferedwhat appeared to be a gunshot wound to the right shoulder, enteringthrough the front jU5t above the collar bone, travelling throughthe shoulder joint and exiting through the back of the shoulder. She had an addi t ional 'I through and through" inj ury to her righthand, entering near the base of her thumb and exiting through theback. In this wound was an object, later identified as a metalwasher. She also had bruising or a gunshot graze en her neck. Atthe time of IO's arrival, she had been taken for an angiogram.Denver Officer D, A. Awe #92~74 was present in the emergency rOomand had been given, by Dr. Drury, what appears to be a shotgun wad.Dr, Drury had removed it from the entrance wound in the girl'sshoulder, The wad was wrapped in a plastic hag/ and IO tookcontrolof it at approximacely 1322 hours, 10 placed it into another/labeled, bag and locked it in the trunk of C-155 1 which was parkedin the emergency vehicle pa.rking area o1J.tside the emergency roomdoor, ER nurse Jane Cole save IO and Det. Nelson clothing andpersonal belongings taken from victim Michael Johngon. Those itemswere already in two bags, and they were labeled and locked in thevehicle tr~nk by 10 Gaetano. Since Lakewood Det, Wilhelminterviewed Michael Johnson, he was subaeq~ently given the bagscontaining his property, After each time that XO Gaetano accessedthe trunk of C~15S, the keys were obtained from and returned toDec. Nelson,

When Ruegsegger had been returned to the emergenoy room atapproximately 1445 hours, she was conscious. 10 was able tocomplete a very basic interview with her, although she wasuncomfortable talking and had numerous friends and relatives inaccendance Ruegsegger had been given at least two doses ofmorphine and seemed to be in a great deal of pain. She advisedthat she had been in the school library reading a book when sheheard what she now believes were gunshots, but at the time she did

not know the cause of the noise but thought it came from thecafeteria. Ruegsegger estimated that there were 30-50 people inthe library, but she was not accompanied by anyone known to her.About five minutes after the noise, the librarian yelled ateveryone, telling them to get down, under tables and that someonehad a gun. Ruegsegger hid under a small table, pUlling a chair infront of herself. She heard the voices of the two gunmen. bothmale, talking, She recalls hearing one gunman talk to someone, saying something like MOh, a nigger, you're a dead black boyn. Amale student, who was next to Ruegsegger under a table, was shot.Ruegsegger screamed, and the gunman told her to stop her"bitching". She could only see the gunman's legs and thought hemay have been wearing black pants. She was unable to recall hisfootwear. The gunman leaned down and shot her from an estimateddistance of five or six feet, She still was only able to see thelegs of the shooter. she never saw the second gunman and could notdistinguish any accents or identifiable features, including race, from the voices. Ruegsegger used her hands to cover her ears, andthe injury to her right hand was believed to be sustained after shehad been shot in the shoulder. She was unclear as to whether shehad been shot a second time , in the hand.

Ruegsegger remained hldden under the table, continuing to hearr'bangs~11 at. least some of which she believes were bombs exploding. She does not know what made the gunmen leave the library. Afterthe gunmen left the room, the students who were able to do so ranfrom the room. Two people, including one possibly named Sarah, tried to help her get out. She was unable to move quickly and wastrampled by other victims in the rush to leave the area. Sheremembers being outside the school and in or near a police carbefore she was given medical treatment.

10 spoke with parents Darcey and Greg Ruegsegger at thehospital Darcey advised that an unidentitied man had phoned her,at her daughter's request, to advise her of the situation. Itappears as though this man was a neig~~or or bystander who was withthe girl in a nearby yard, Shortly after the first phone call, shewas contacted by medical personnel who advised that she was beingtransported to the hospital. Darcey and Greg Ruegsegger remainedwith their daughter until she was taken to surgery. Greg advised10 that his daughter told him she recalled the gun used to shoather as having two barrels.

IQ obtained a medical records release signed by DarceyRuegsegger.

10 Gaetano was allowed to accompany the surgical team, inclUding Drs. Wolf, Wong and Desai, into the operating room duringthe surgery. When the backboard was removed from under Ruegsegger, her clothing was access~ble. IO packaged and labeled it during theoperation, at approximately 1725 hours. Among the items were apair of Blues Sxpress jeans, size 3/4 L, with a brown belt still inthe loops; a white pa~r of Victoria's Secret panties, size small;and what appeared to be one sectlon of a white sleeveless t-shirt.The other section of the shirt had been retrieved by IO while thegirl was in the emergency room at approximately 1620 hours. , and she did notrecognize it as belonging to her daughter. No shoes, socks or brawere among the items under the girl. It is unknown whether the t~

shirt was actually from another victim and could have been used forpadding or bandaging.

During the surgery, Or. Wong took two Polaroid photos of theshoulder wound, one entrance and one exit, for to Gaetano. Dr.Wolf retrieved what appears to be a small metal washer from theinjury to the girlis right hand. It was placed into a plastic bagheld by 10 at approximately 1745 hours. After surgery, IO spokewith Dr. Wolf and learned that the wound to Ruegsegger'g right handmay have been due to shrapnel rather than a gunshot. The wound wascurved, in somewhat of a "ell shape and jagged. Some ofRuegsegger's hair was immeshed in the wound to her right hand. Theextent of the surgery was to stabilize and clean the girl'sinjuries. Dr. Desai's plan for surgery was to clean the shoulderarea and place pins inside with an external plate. Future surgerywould be needed to repair the shoulder. IO did not remain in theoperating room for the entire operation. !O left the hospital atapproximately 2023 hra

All items related to Ruegsegger were placed in the APD lab fordrying and for security. The items were left inside the lockeddrying room which is contained within the locked lab. On 042l99 f

the items were photographed by !O Gaetano and packaged by IO andfrom Tech. John Graham. The two Polaroid photos were loggedon the evidence sheets but were made part of the case file to begiven to the Jefferson County authorities. In looking at thephotos, it appears that the gunshot may have grazed her neck beforegoing through her shoulder.

On 042199, at approximately 1405 hours, IO Gaetano attemptedto re-interview Ruegsegger in the Progressive Care Unit of St.Anthony Hospital Central. She was able to answer only a fewquestiDns and frequently dozed off while speaking with IO. Sheadvised that she was sitting in a c~ir in the school libraryreading a magazine at about 11:15, She heard some "bangs" thatsounded like they were coming from the top of the stairs by thelibrary door. The people in the library (she estimates that therewere 30 or more) were calking about the noises and asking oneanother what it was, The bangs stopped for a time, and she heardmore noises that seemed to be coming from do~mstairs. Thelibrarian yelled at everyone to get down, saying ~hat a kLd had agun. The dQors to the library remained open. RueSsegger got offthe chair she was using and hid under a computer booth/table,pulling a chair in front of her. She estimates that she was hidingfar five or ten minutes before the gunmen came into the library andfired a shot. She was unable to see what was happening but thinkSthat someone had been shot at this time, One of the gunmen stoodin front of Ruegsegger and said something that Ruegsegger could notmake sense of. Sbe thought he commanded everyone with a white hatto get up so he could shoot them. The gunman shot an acquaintance

A couple of minutes later, she sawa female teacher come into the Library and state something to theeffect of "get down, he has a gun." Ruegsegger got up and movedto hide under the computer table. She got under the second cubbyarea of the computer table. There are two computer tables in theLibrary and she was on the south side of the table further to thesouth. She was sitting upright facing the front door area of theLibrary. She pulled one of the chairs in towards her to helpconceal herself. Ruegsegger ind~cated on the Library diagram herposition under the computer table.

A couple of minutes later, two gunmen came into theLibrary and immediately moved to the west side. She does notrecall what the ~~nmen looked like or what they were wearing. One of the gunman moved to the area between Ruegsegger and table#18. Ruesegger does not recall what direction this gunman movedfrom to get to table #18. He removed his trenchcoat and dropped'it on the floor north of table #18. When the he took off histrsnchcoat, he laid his weapon on top of table #18. Ruegseggerremembers the weapon to be a long gun, possibly a rifle orshotgun. gunman then stated, "fine, I'll just start shooting." Ruegseggerdid not know the location of the second gunman, when the firstgunman was removing his trenchcoat and making these white hatcomments.

The gunmen than began shooting within the west part ofthe Library. After hearing gunfire she heard one of the gunmennear the west side of table !lI9 state, "hey, man, I have a niggerover here." After that statement she heard more gunshots. Aboutthis time she could feel big explosions within the west part ofthe Library. She then saw one of the gunmen bend down and shoottowards a boy in the first cubby hole (behind her). She quicklylooked away and heard the gunshot. The gunman was approximatelyeight to ten feet away when she saw him. Ruesegger does notspecifically remerrber what the gunman looked like or how he wasdressed. She does believe the gun may have had two barrels.

Immediately after the gunshot behind her , Ruegseggerwas shot in her right shoulder. Ruesegger thought she got shotfrom behind, but her doctors told her the wounds came from thefront side, exiting the back of her shoulder. She remembersafter being shot her right arm floating up in the air and thencoming back down. Ruegsegger had her hands covering her ears atthe time she was shot. Ruegsegger thought that her right arm hadbeen shot off. She made a comment like "oh" and the gunman toldher to 'stop her bitching". She then put her head down andpretended to play dead. She does remember seeing a girl in thenext cubby hole to the west of her looking at her at the time.

After being shot everything that occurred in theLibrary became fuzzy. Ruegsegger was holding her arm andpretending to be dead. Bhe does remember hearing a oomment byone of the gunmen that they were "going to blow up this wholefucking Library." That statement was followed by more gunshotsand the sounds of bombs exploding. Ruegsegger could recall noather specific comments by the gunman Or their movement withinthe Library. She estimated it was approximately ten minutesafter she was shot that the Library got quiet. Ruegsegger doesnot remember hear~ng a fire alarm going off in the Library.

her. Scott and the girl that was in cubby hole next to her, helped her get up to her feet. Scott then held on to her andthey moved to the back door exit of the Library. As they movedto the back door, she remembers seeing kids in the offices thatadjoined the hall to the back door. She was not aware of howthose students got into the offices. As they continued to moveto the back door, she and Scott were getting run into by otherstudents t~ling to exit the Library. Ruegsegger remembersexiting the back door and running up a small hill to a policecar. Ruegsegger ran to the police car on her own and doesn'tknow what happened to Scott. Hiding behind the police car wereapproximately 20 students. She remembers seeing Dan Steepleton,Val Schnuur and Sara Houy behind the police car. So~,uur wassitting next to her and HOuy was holding a shirt to Ruegsegger'sshoulder. She also remembers seeing a heavyset body laying onthe ground in bad shape with other students trying to keep thatperson awake. She remembers seeing one police officer behind thecar pointing his gun at the school, hiding behind an open door ofthe vehicle. That officer kept saying to the students to stayrelaxed. She does remember hearing somebody say that there wassomebody on the roof.

Another police car drove down to the police car theywere hiding behind. Ruegsegger was loaded into that police carand shuttled behind a shed further up the hill. From there shewas again loaded into a police car to be shuttled to aneighborhood, where a triage area had been set up. Ruegseggergot into the police car behind the shed, but it could not startand they were moved to another police car. She was driven to thetriage area and was taken out of the police car. She laid downon the grass and was "pretty calm". A lady gave her water from ahose and then a nurse came to look at her inJuries. A man gaveher a phone and she was able to call her morn. She was placedinto an ambulance and during the drive to the hospital again wasable to call her mom. Ruegsegger was calm and not crying untilshe was at the hospital and saw her mom.

Ruegsegger's wounds were to her right shoulder.Ruegsegger had a cadaver bone placed in her arm to connectthe shoulder socket. Her Shoulder socket is intact thoughdoes still have some metal pieces lodged in her shoulder.doctors also removed a washer from her right thumb.

II Va-leanSchnurr told 10 she did not recall the exact words u$ed by thesuspect at that point, but knew they were requesting the studentsin the library to get out from underneath the tables. ValeenSchnurr stated based on what she was hearing at that point, sheknew the suspects had continued west further into the library, butshe could no longer see them.

Valeen Schnurr related after hearing the above commentdemanding the students come out from under the tables, she thenheard, "a couple of gunshots," va.l.een Schnurr again indicated thegunshots were coming from a westerly direction and appeared to beconsistent with the path of travel taken by the suspects as theyentered the libra~y. IO confirmed with Valeen Schnurr she wasdescribing gunshots inside the library, which appeared to beoccurring somewhere from the northwest area, Valeen Schnurr didrecall, after hearing those gunshots, one of the suspects stated,"Lock at his brains," Valeen Sch.,'1urr told IO at that point, shebelieved someone had been shoe. Valeen Schnurr next explained as she would hear one of theabove comments, it would then be followed by gunshots.AdditionallYI Valeen Schnurr would then hear laughter and varioustypes of yells which .she had previously described as a lIwoo hoal!sound. Valeen Schnurr staced there was one additional sound sheheard which was different from the ather sounds t while the suspectswere on the west side of the library. When asked to describe thatnoise, Valeen Schnurr stated following what she believed was agunshot, she then heard "book sounds or paper sounds. II When askedto elaborate, Valeen Schnurr stated it sounded as though, after thegunshot, she could hear llthe :rustling of papers, like booksfalling." valeen Schnurr speculated that one of the suspects hadpossibly shot some of the books on a shelf l thus, causing the abovedescribed noise.

Valeen Schnurr told 10 it was after hearing that sound that itbecame very obvious the suspects we~e now moving over to the eastside of the library. When asked to elaborate. When asked tofurthe4 describe that situation, Valeen Schnurr stated she neveractually saw the suspect in any detail, but saw movement to her1'left." just prior to being shot. Valeen Schnurr described seeingan image with her peripheral vision l which she now believes was thesuspect! as she was being shot. Valeen Schnurr explained it feltas though ahe had been shot from the left side, which again wasconsistent with the above described observation.

!n respect to her injuries, Valeen Schnurr described injuriesto her left arm, left chest/breast, continuing down into theabdominal area. valeen Schnurr seated she was later told shereceived powder burns to the left arm/shoulder area! againconsistent with her being shot from the left side. Valeen Schnurrwent on to state, according to the doctors who treated her, therewere anywhere between nine to fifteen gunsnot wounds. As IOcontinued that line of questioning, it appeared as thQugh some ofthe wounds described by Valeen Schnurx, particularly as itpertain~d to the left arm/shoulder area, were through and throughinjuries which then continued on into the chest and down into theabdominal area. According to Valeen Schnurr I she still hadprojec~iles lodged in her abdominal area. See Valeen Schnurrlsmedical reports for details.

On April 27, 1999, Investigator Eaton was assignedinvestigative lead control #1311. The source listed on the~nformation control sheet for this lead is Brian Crooks of theJefferson County Sheriff's Department. The narrative portion ofthe informacion control sheet has information that a caller to theJefferson County Sheriff's Department advised that a Columbine HighSchool student called into ROA radio at approximately 1030 hours onApril 21, 1999 and stated he had received a minor injury from abullet. The caller also advised that this student claimed that thethree males a rehended in Clement Park near the high schoolwere Supposedly this Columbine High Schoolstud ~ng w~t ike Rosen at KOA radio. InvestigatorEaton was assigned the task of contacting Mike Rosen at KOA radioin order to decermine if the Colu~bine High School student could beidentified and more information gleaned from him.

On this same date Investigator Eaton was able to contactpersonnel at KOA rad~o and asked to be put through to Mike Rosen sothat Investigator Eaton could follow up on this information.Investigacor Eaton was put through to Mike Rosen's voice mail.Mike Rosen's voice mail asked the cal1e~ to leave a telephonenumber and the information requested and advised that Mike Rosenwould call the person back as soon as possible but to be advisedthat any infor~~tion left on the recording could possibly be usedon the radio show at a later date. Investigator Eaton did not feelthat it was appropriate to be leaving that type of information onMike Rosen's voice mail when there was a chance it could be on theradio and compromise this investigation. Investigator eatontherefOre contacted the Arvada Police Oepartment's PressInformation Officer Susan Roesi and requested she actempt tocontact Mike Rosen or KOA radio personnel and obtain theintormat.ion.
