New and noteworthyThis report presents the best performing free and paid apps globally for August 2013 in terms of app downloads and app revenues, and covers the three major app stores: the Apple App Store, Google Play, and the Amazon Appstore. We take an extensive look at the main highlights and movements in the app stores during August 2013, and identify top performing apps and publishers. In addition, this report provides an overview of the market sizes in terms of revenue for the Apple App Store and Google Play over the past six months, along with the relative market sizes in the top 10 countries. The report concludes with highlighting the newest fast growing high volume apps in the Apple App Store that have reached more than one million downloads in August 2013.

All data used in this report is directly extracted from Distimo AppIQ, which provides insights into the estimated download volumes and revenues of all apps in the major app stores on a daily basis.

Major Findings

Based on the revenue volumes for August 2013, Google Play’s share is at 35 percent, compared to 65 percent for the Apple App Store.

When looking at the combined revenue for the Apple App Store and Google Play, the United States is the most revenue-generating nation, followed by Japan and South Korea in August 2013.

Despicable Me: Minion Rush stayed on rank one for two consecutive months as the top most popular free app globally in the Apple App Store as well as in the Amazon Appstore.

The top adventure game Minecraft – Pocket Edition was the only paid app ranked in all three major app stores within the global top five during August 2013.

Globally, the most revenue generating app of August 2013 was Supercell’s Clash of Clans in the Apple App Store, while Candy Crush Saga by King.com continued to be the top grossing app on Google Play.

Disney was a top publisher for paid apps ranked within the top five of each major store during August 2013.

Similar to July 2013, Gameloft continued to be one of the global top publishers for free apps. In August 2013, Gameloft was in addition also successful with the paid apps of its Asphalt racing games series.

Besides the high popularity of games, the summer month of August also brought momentum to a few non-game apps like YouTube, Netflix, Google Maps & Google Translate, as well as major messaging apps.

During August 2013, Disney Infinity Action! reached over one million downloads within four days of being released in the Apple App Store.

The first point of interest in this report is the recent growth development of the Apple App Store and Google Play. For this ongoing analysis, we looked at the revenue generated by the top countries listed below1 over the past six months. The aggregated revenue of the Apple App Store showed a stable volume, whereas Google Play’s revenue grew by 61 percent when comparing the revenue at the end of March and August 2013. The combined revenue of both major stores grew by 17 percent over the past six months. Analyzing this positive growth on store level brings the following findings: In August 2013, the market share distribution was at 35 percent for Google Play, compared to 65 percent for the Apple App Store. This picture was different a half year ago: In March 2013, Google Play was only responsible for 25 percent, while Apple’s share was at 75 percent.

We conclude for August 2013: The Apple App Store is still leading in terms of total revenue. However, Google Play’s piece of the pie is consistently increasing month over month.

Country Sizes

Revenue distribution by country and platform in August 2013

As the total revenue from both the Apple App Store and Google Play is growing, a look at the country level gives deeper insights on the most revenue driving regions for each platform. This overview provides a more detailed perspective on the Apple App Store, as the revenue portion is also shown separately for iPhone and iPad.

In August 2013, the top 10 leading countries did not change from July 2013. All markets showed a positive growth contributing to the overall market growth in August 2013. The United States is still the big spender in the app market overall, followed by Japan and South Korea. For this month’s analysis we added China to the list. Please note that there is no paid content offered in China on Google Play. Therefore, the estimated revenue for China only relies on the iOS platforms iPhone and iPad. Despite this fact, China is still ranked fifth in August 2013.

The combined revenue from both iOS platforms iPhone and iPad was the largest in the United States, followed by Japan and the United Kingdom. For Google Play it was interesting to note that after the most dominating countries Japan, South Korea, and the United States, Germany had the fourth biggest revenue portion in August 2013.

Top Global AppsThe global big picture of the developments in the app stores shows a positive growth during August. If this holds true on app level, and which apps cause the most growth, will be analyzed in this section. We highlight the leading apps within the three categories: free, paid, and top grossing in the Apple App Store (for iPhone & iPad), Google Play, and the Amazon Appstore, based on data covering the full month of August on a globally aggregated level.

Top Free AppsAugust 2013 continued to be a good month for Gameloft’s Despicable Me: Minion Rush, which led the top free charts in the Apple App Store followed by Candy Crush Saga by King.com as in July 2013. Plants vs. Zombies™ 2 ranked a close third. The new PopCap title was featured in the New & Noteworthy category as well as in the Games category across many countries in the Apple App Store in August. Being featured paid off in terms of download volumes and resulted in this high chart position for August. Two classic apps, Google, Inc.’s YouTube and Google Maps completed the top five free chart, coming in at rank four and five, respectively. Along with the release of a new version of YouTube, another likely reason behind the increased download volumes was being featured in the Apple App Store during August in the What’s Hot, New & Noteworthy, and College Survival Guide categories, amongst others.

Globally Aggregated over August 2013Top 5 Free Apps in the Apple App Store

Facebook and WhatsApp Messenger were once again the most downloaded free apps in August on Google Play. Candy Crush Saga moved back up the charts to rank three, whereas the new entry of July Despicable Me: Minion Rush by Gameloft was only a short visitor in the global top free apps, dropping down to rank seven. The top five were completed by free popular messaging apps: LINE: Free Calls & Messages, which entered the top free app list on rank four, and the Facebook Messenger app remained at rank five. With Candy Crush as the only game, August 2013 was the month of free popular messaging apps on Google Play.

Globally Aggregated over August 2013Top 5 Free Apps in the Amazon Appstore

The free app charts of all stores show that also non-game apps have the potential to enter the top five. The Apple App Store showed an increased popularity for Google Maps, which might have been caused by more travelers during the summer. The same motivation could also be assumed behind the increased success of messaging apps on Google Play. The higher rank of YouTube in the Apple App Store, in line with vTube and Netflix on the Amazon Appstore suggest a higher popularity for video streaming on mobile devices during August 2013.

3. ★ Princess Hair Salon - girls games 6677g ltd

5. Netflix Netflix, Inc

An interesting trend emerged as well in the Amazon Appstore among the top free apps in August, where game apps were not the only apps present in the top five. In contrast to Google Play, Despicable Me: Minion Rush by Gameloft remained at rank one, while the following ranks showed some changes: Where’s my Mickey? Free reached rank number two and Princess Hair Salon was ranked on number three. Both of these game apps were newly released in August and achieved top positions. The non-game apps that moved up in ranks in August were the Kindle Tablet Edition of vTube- viewer & downloader for YouTube at rank number four and Netflix at rank five.

Top Paid AppsIn August, Minecraft – Pocket Edition reached the top of the global paid charts in the Apple App Store for the first time in the past six months. Following closely behind the new number one was the racing game, Asphalt 8: Airborne, which showed an impressive performance, given that the game was only released in August. Another new name in the iOS top five paid apps was Smart Alarm Clock: sleep cycles & noise recording, which showed an increased download volume of about 50 percent compared to July. Both Pimp Your Screen and Pou moved up one rank in the paid charts reaching rank four and five during August. Apart from the exceptional performance of Asphalt 8: Airborne, the movements in the top five paid charts were mainly caused by the conversion of long-time top performer WhatsApp into a free app in late July. This resulted in the app not being listed in the paid charts anymore, which left room for the others to move up in the rankings.

Mojang’s Minecraft - Pocket Edition moved up to rank two, pushing Titanium Backup PRO Key ★ root down a notch to rank three. Nova Launcher Prime and Poweramp Full Version Unlocker stayed on rank four and five in August. All these top five paid apps showed a positive growth in terms of paid downloads during August.

Globally Aggregated over August 2013Top 5 Paid Apps in the Amazon Appstore

Analyzing the top paid apps across all stores in August, clearly identifies Mojang as a top publisher. The top adventure game Minecraft – Pocket Edition showed continuously a strong cross-store presence in the top positions of the paid charts.

WhatsApp’s shift from a paid model to a free one caused ranking shifts in the Apple App Store and showed that it is not always due to increased performance that an app reaches a higher rank. In the Amazon Appstore, Kindle Tablet Editions of apps increased download volumes during August 2013. The global top 10 paid apps ranked four titles for the Kindle device. Looking at the global top 100 paid apps, about 25 percent of all apps were Kindle Tablet Editions.

3. Wreck-It Ralph (Kindle Tablet Edition) Disney

4. Where’s My Mickey? XL (Kindle Tablet Edition) Disney

5. Cut the Rope ZeptoLab

Similar to the Apple App Store, Minecraft – Pocket Edition continued to dominate the paid charts in the Amazon Appstore as it was once again the most downloaded paid app. The following ranks were conquered by the Kindle Tablet Editions of the big game hits: Plants vs. Zombies, Wreck-It-Ralph, and Where’s my Mickey? XL. While Plants vs. Zombies only climbed up one spot in the rankings, Wreck-It-Ralph was a big mover, and increased its paid downloads by more than six times compared to July 2013, reaching rank number three. In line with the free charts, the paid version, Where’s my Mickey? XL remained in the top five at rank number four, losing two ranks compared to July. The app at rank number five, Cut the Rope moved into the top five based on an increase in paid downloads by almost 50 percent after being featured on the Amazon Appstore at the end of July 2013.

Top Grossing AppsIn the Apple App Store, the long-standing battle between Candy Crush Saga and Clash of Clans continued. Clash of Clans conquered the top grossing charts again in August 2013, besting Candy Crush Saga, which had been holding on to rank one for the previous two months. The month of August brought more revenue for Clash of Clans, while Candy Crush Saga experienced a slight loss compared to July 2013, resulting in a switch in ranks for August. After the United States, Japan was the most revenue contributing country for Clash of Clans. The Japanese localization of the game (as discussed in our June report) might still be one of the reasons behind this success. Furthermore, the game was featured in the Japanese App Store in the What’s Hot category during August. This increase also shows that western developers can be successful in Asian markets. Supercell was in addition still successful with its other top title, Hay Day, which defended its rank number three position against Puzzle & Dragons at rank number four. The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-earth remained unchanged at rank number five.

On Google Play, Candy Crush Saga remained at rank number one, and パズル&ドラゴンズ(Puzzle & Dragons) was at rank number two as in July. With LINE Pokopang, a new player reached the top grossing charts at rank number three. The puzzle game was released in May 2013, but increased its revenue in August significantly compared to July. This move pushed 모두의마블 for Kakao and LINE: Free Calls & Messages down one spot to the fourth and fifth rank, respectively.

The top grossing apps across the Apple App Store and Google Play did not have much in common in the month of August. The only shared titles in both app stores were Candy Crush Saga and GungHo’s Puzzle & Dragons. While the dragon puzzle game is currently available in four countries: Japan, South Korea, the United States, and Canada, only the Japanese versions made it to the top positions in the global charts. There was an increase in revenue for the iOS version, which resulted in a reduced revenue gap between the two platforms in August.

Looking at the big picture, the top grossing apps were dominated by games in August 2013. On Google Play, the communication app LINE: Free Calls & Messages was the only non-game app listed among the top ranks.

Top Global PublishersAlong with the Top Global Apps, this section provides a more detailed view on the relation between the publishers behind these apps. We present the globally most successful publishers of August 2013 along with their best performing apps in the related categories, based on the number of free or paid downloads or total revenue in the Apple App Store (for iPhone & iPad), Google Play, and the Amazon Appstore.

Top Global Publishers - Free AppsWith two top free apps ranked number four and five in August 2013, Google, Inc. was the top publisher of free apps in the Apple App Store. Gameloft moved down to rank number two and Disney remained at rank number three, mostly due to the popularity of Where’s My Mickey? Free. Apple owned rank number four in August 2013, as Apple’s “house apps” were in total more popular than the ones by George CL, who was found on global rank number five.

Amazon’s top publishers were clearly successful with three main trends that were picked up by a lot of developers recently. 6677g ltd mainly features salon-like apps targeting girls as well as casual doctor games and continued to be the most successful publisher on Amazon with its 27 apps. In line with the Apple App Store and Google Play, Gameloft also remained at the top in the Amazon charts at rank number two. Casual doctor games and salon-like girl apps were also the main source of success for Tab Tale LTD at rank number three, and LiBii at rank number five. Starnet Technology Ltd (previously Alfa Production LLC) at rank number four proved to be successful with quiz and trivia games similar to “4 pics 1 …”, the third main trend in the Amazon Appstore.

Globally Aggregated over August 2013Top 5 Publishers - Free Apps in the Amazon Appstore

Facebook continued to be the leading publisher with its top free app. In addition to the success in the Apple App Store, Google, Inc. also gained popularity in Google Play, due in large part to Google Translate reaching rank number two. The following publishers did not improve notably in performance during August: LINE Corporation and Gameloft both moved down one notch in the rankings compared to July, due to the gain of Google Inc.. Rank number five showed a new name: WhatsApp Inc., which moved up to the top five ranking at the expense of King.com. The drop of King.com in the rankings was caused mainly due to fewer download volumes for Pet Rescue Saga.

During August 2013, Gameloft succeeded in all three app stores due to its free title Despicable Me. Free messaging apps brought high download volumes to Google Play’s publishers, in line with the trend identified for the top free apps. For the Amazon Appstore three main trends could be identified over the past few weeks from the top publishers of free apps. The trends focused on salon-like apps for girls, casual doctor games, as well as quiz and trivia games, all of which proved to be successful during August 2013. These trends were also visible in the other two stores, but could not win over the big players in the top chart positions.

Top Global Publishers - Paid AppsIn the Apple App Store, Disney held the number one position, with its best performing app in August 2013 Temple Run: Oz. Gameloft was not only successful in the free charts; Asphalt 8: Airborne, was the main driver in achieving rank number two in the paid charts. FIFA 13 contributed the most to an increased position for Electronic Arts at rank number three. With Plus Sports another new name reached the charts in August at rank number four, and Apple occupied rank number five mainly due to an increased demand for Pages.

The Amazon Appstore presented a different picture in August 2013. While Disney continued to be the top publisher for paid apps, Electronic Arts Inc. moved up to rank number two in front of Beansprites and Mojang. Due to the increased popularity of Cut the Rope, ZeptoLab entered the top five at the expense of Gameloft, which in addition, lost some volume on its title UNO (Kindle Tablet Edition).

There were hardly any changes among the top publishers for paid apps in the Google Play market. In August there were no new names, however a drop in paid download volumes mainly for “Where’s My Mickey?” moved Disney down from rank number one to rank number three, while Where’s My Water continued to be Disney’s best performing app in August. The drop caused Swift Key to take the number one ranking again in August 2013. All other publishers showed a stable performance.

While Minecraft – Pocket Edition was one of the top paid apps that all stores had in common, Mojang as a publisher was only found in the top five for the Amazon Appstore.

Top Global Publishers - Grossing AppsThe top grossing apps for top publishers in the Apple App Store did not show any changes for the top five in August. Five publishers continued to be successful with their main titles noted below. Over the complete month of August 2013 Clash of Clans generated the most revenue when comparing the main contributing apps of these top five publishers. The users from the United States contributed the most to the success of four of these publishers, while LINE was by far mostly profitable in Japan, supporting the high rank of the NAVER Japan Corporation.

GungHoOnlineEntertainment entered the top five grossing charts at rank number three at the expense of Mobage, which showed a slight decrease with its title MARVEL War of Heroes. COLOPL, Inc. and King.com switched rank places in August. On Google Play, a strong presence of Japanese and Korean developers was visible in the top charts, with King.com as the only exception in the global top five.

Millions of mobile apps are launched today. Standing out with a high volume in downloads in this competitive environment is an impressive achievement. In this section we highlight the iOS apps that reached this first big milestone the fastest, giving their developers a reason to celebrate. Our analysis shows how fast the one million milestone was reached and lists the main contributing countries in the table below.

The road to one million downloads

August 2013 in the Apple App StoreTop 10 new apps to achieve one million downloads globally

App Publisher Largest download volumes

1. Disney Infinity: Action! Disney 46% 6% 5%

2. Baby Care & Baby Hospital - Kids games George CL 37% 8% 6%

3. 植物大战僵尸2 PopCap 100%

4. 天天爱消除 Shenzhen Tencent Computer Systems 91% 3% 1%

5. Gold Diggers Gamistry 36% 8% 5%

6. Celebrity Doctor - Free games George CL 37% 9% 5%

8. Baby Home Adventure - Mommy’s Little Helper Kids Fun Club by TabTale 41% 6% 6%

9. Monster Doctor Office Ninjafish Studios 37% 8% 6%

10. The Impossible Line Chillingo Ltd 49% 25% 8%

Most of the apps listed here caught our attention as high new entries or big movers in the top chart positions during our weekly analysis: Top Noteworthy Apps. It is remarkable to see how fast these apps gained momentum in just a few days. Looking back just a few years ago, it took a top app like Facebook nine months to reach this first milestone. As the app store market grows more mature, newly released apps now have the ability to generate one million downloads faster than ever. The leading app in the race to reach one million downloads in August 2013 was Disney Infinity: Action!, which was also one of the highest newly ranked app during its release week. Disney reached the one million downloads milestone with this kids game app in around four days. An interesting player is 植物大战僵尸2 – the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2. The app reached its first one million downloads quickly, but soon after (due to rather mediocre reviews), the daily download volume dropped. The Impossible Line by Chillingo, reached the one million downloads milestone within the last 10 days of August.

In line with the result from the section of the most successful publishers, we can highlight the double achievements of George CL’s (publishing as 6677 g ltd on the Amazon Appstore). With both apps listed, George CL proved that the trend of casual doctor games and baby care apps was also on the rise within the Apple App Store. As mentioned before, this trend was visible, but not strong enough to overachieve the performance of existing top games. Both milestone achievements of Shenzhen Tencent Computer Systems Company Limited proved the popularity of “match four” type puzzle games.

Looking at the countries behind the downloads volumes of this top 10 selection, the United States generated (with over 44 percent) most of the total downloads, followed by China and the United Kingdom. It is interesting to see the high volume of downloads generated from China in this chart, as it shows that new apps on the Apple App Store were explored more quickly in China during August 2013 as compared to July 2013.

August 2013 continued with a positive revenue growth of the major app stores. With the Apple App Store still leading, we saw Google Play’s market share increasing. The major markets did not change, but it is notable that the gap between Asia and the United States is getting smaller.

Individual apps and publishers were analyzed, looking at the top free and paid download volumes and total revenue globally. The results showed that in the Apple App Store, Clash of Clans conquered the global top grossing charts again in the long-standing battle with Candy Crush Saga, while on Google Play, Candy Crush Saga was still the most revenue generating app globally.

The most revenue generating publishers were accordingly Supercell and King.com (Limited), followed by the LINE Corporation, Electronic Arts, and CJ E&M corp.. Disney and Gameloft gained the most downloads for paid apps. Most of the highlighted top publishers showed a strong cross-store performance during August 2013. In terms of newly released games there was a visible trend in all stores focusing on trivia and puzzle games next to salon like girl games and casual doctor game apps. Besides the high popularity of games, the summer month of August brought also momentum to a few non-game apps like YouTube, Netflix, Google Maps, and Google Translate as well as major messaging apps.

Analyzing the road to one million downloads in the Apple App Store showed that the United States, China, and the United Kingdom were the nations that explored newly released apps mostly in August 2013.

For the coming months it will keep interesting to follow the further development of the market volumes on app store level, as well as on country level as western developers are gaining ground in Asian markets.

Distimo AppIQ allows users to:• Track and compare app downloads and competitor app downloads: Analyze an app’s market share and compare

download figures versus a competitor’s in one chart. The chart shows the daily downloads and can also be aggregated per week or month. Events such as price changes, featured listings and version updates are also included, and allow the user to analyze the influence of each event on downloads.

• Analyze competing app revenues including those from in-app purchases: View daily revenues from competing apps side-by-side with your own app and get extensive insight into the revenue generation of different business models, revenue per country, and platform.

• Identify the most popular and upcoming new apps: The Leaderboard provides the daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly rankings of all apps, and can be viewed by app store, country, category, device, and free/paid/gross. All of the major app stores are supported, and for iOS and Google Play and the Amazon Appstore, the daily volumes per individual app are also provided. AppIQ users see the daily downloads and revenue from in-app purchases and one-off fees. Developers can also use the Leaderboard to see how many downloads are needed to achieve a certain ranking on any given day.
