This tradition continues to this day with egg hunts, gifts and basket from the Easter bunny.

Spring is coming and we have set our clocks forward and survived the grogginess after losing an hour of sleep and the surprise of cooking dinner in daylight. The concept of DST was first suggested by Benjamin Franklin in 1784 as a way to save candles by getting people out of bed earlier. Apparently, he meant that only as a joke. But in 1895 George Hudson, an entomologist, again proposed DST as he wanted more daylight hours to study insects. From 1914 on in Canada, DST became a provincial matter and it was not until 1966 that it was standardized across Canada (though not all provinces or cities actually followed that guideline). Does this ritual make sense anymore? If we look at the scientific studies, it would appear that farmers do not like DST, that energy conservation does not benefit and although shopping slightly increases, in doing so, more gas is used to get to shopping areas. With the arrival of spring on March 20th, the Easter festival is not far behind. This includes the culmination of Lent, the celebration of the Holy Week , Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Our March Guest Speakers

Natalie Bubela and Harold Featherston

From the

Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare

Looking Ahead to our April General Meeting:

The guest speaker for April will be Laura Gilmour, owner of Wild Muskoka Botanicals.

Just in time for spring and information about what's edible growing in the Muskoka woods!

There has been a lot of news lately on the situation regarding the hospitals and our

healthcare in Muskoka. To try and make sense of all this, we have invited two of the

top people at Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare who are overseeing the situation for us

and hopefully will provide some insight and answer many of our questions.

The presentation will explain Stage 1 of the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care

capital planning process that MAHC is working on and will describe the work

accomplished to date and the anticipated next steps of the planning work.

There will, of course, be time for questions at the end of the presentation.

MEMBERSHIP

Our Club is starting its sixth year and continues to enjoy tremendous success. Our

membership is presently at its limit of 175. However, requests for membership will still be

received and names placed on our Waiting List. In the course of the year, it is likely

that space for new members will become available due to members’ changing

circumstances such as a move away from the area. When this happens, the ‘next in line’

on the Waiting list will be contacted. For further details, click on the Membership tab at

the top of the Home Page.

Please remember to wear your name badge at Probus events, especially at the monthly

meetings. This makes greeting other members easy. New members have a green dot on

their badge and Management Team members have a coloured star so they are easy to

identify.

receive a Sympathy card, as I would like to acknowledge this by sending a card on our

Club’s behalf. Many of you have let me know in the past, and I thank you for that.

Huntsville Lakes Probus Club makes an annual donation to Hospice Huntsville and the

Huntsville Hospital Auxiliary in memory of members’ loved one who passed during the

calendar year.
