RaindRops keep falling on my head… They keep falling. (and falling, and fall-ing…) Holy moly, Texas is wet! I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much rain in my life. While I’m happy the lakes are full and the countryside is green, I say enough already! I’m usually excited when I get to wear my fashionable rain boots, but I think they have made one too many appearances this year. This may be cause for buying a new pair –

diversity people! I do want to take a moment and share my thoughts and prayers with any of you who have suffered loss or catastrophe from this out-of-character rainy season. It is dangerous out there so please be safe and heed the warning of the local broadcasts.

School is out, folks. If your kids are like mine they’re already bored. Just keep on flipping through the pages of Local Life and you’ll find plenty of summertime activities to keep them, and you, occupied. We’ve also included a short note on kid’s & teen safety that you’ll want to check out. Your children are never too old to get a refresher on these important tips. Congratulations to all of you and may you go out and conquer this world successfully!

Let us not forget dear ol’ dad. Father’s Day is right around the cor-ner and us girls need to show those boys how much we love ‘em. I always find it hard to come up with the perfect gift for my husband. Guys are notorious for seeing something they want and just buying it. They make us really think. So, good luck, gals. What I do know, is that there are plenty of local places to visit that can help you come up with the right something-or-other that man in your life deserves. Speaking of local places, I’d like to take a moment to call out Old Town. While it’s been a little messy around there lately, know that all shops and restaurants are definitely still open for business. Please don’t let the small inconvenience of construction stop you from swinging by. The improvements are going to be great and these busi-nesses rely on your visits to get them through it. The only thing that’s changed is the parking. Same great location, same great service! Well, umbrella or not, you can bet that I’ll be out on the town this June! Happy summer!

Conversations To Have with Teens and Preteens

From summer fun to stranger danger. Yes, the latter is quite the bummer of a topic. As you’re planning your summer fun, it’s a good time to remember that new places introduce us to new people. Most of the time, that’s a great thing, but it’s also a good time to remind them to be smart about strangers.

From the time they are old enough to talk, we tell our children not to talk to strangers, not to go any-where with strangers and not to accept things from strangers. As they approach their teenage years, the conversation typically shifts on online safety, but the “stranger danger” conversations must con-tinue. Social media sites are the number one tool for predators to reach out to young teens, but the frightening reality is your teens may already be ac-quaintances with predators from school, at school events, or from typical teen hangouts. Teens, while much more savvy to the ploys of strangers, must be reminded that not all dangerous people fit the typi-cal “bad guy” profile.

In August of 2012, a 14-year-old girl was walking outside Ridgmar Mall by herself. It was raining and she was upset because her friends had left without her. A young man drove up next to her and offered her a ride. She declined, but he persisted, showing her his Army uniform to convince her that he was trustworthy. She eventually accepted the ride and became the victim of another child predator.

For Preteens & TeensBegin by discussing the difference between friends and acquaintances. Someone they see regularly at school events or hangouts is not necessarily a friend. Talk about stranger safety in an open, frank, but non-threatening way. Fear can make a kid less likely to tell you about a scary situation. More about stranger safety:

GET TO KNOW YOUR KID’S FRIENDS. Middle school children are especially vulnerable to

predators, so get involved at your child’s school to know who’s who.

MAKE SURE YOUR KID’S SOCIAL MEDIA PROFILES ARE PRIVATE and that the

location services are turned off. Advise your kid not to accept friend requests from anyone they don’t know face-to-face.

KEEP YOUR KID BUSY with extracurricular activities that he/she enjoys. Frequent teen

hangouts like malls, fast food places and parking lots are also favorite hangouts of bad strangers. If your kid says he/she is going to “hang out,” get the details and check in frequently.

EDUCATE YOUR KID about the fact that social media makes it possible for a stranger to know

and call them by their name. Kids should never go up to a car they don’t know.

LOOK INTO A GPS DEVICE for your kid. Many professionals recommend the Amber Alert GPS

system. The software can be added to a smart phone or can be a small device that your kid keeps in a pant or coat pocket.

IF YOU HAVE SUSPICIONS, COMB YOUR KID’S COMPUTER, cell phones, iPads or any

digital devices and their bedrooms looking for clues. If you have a hunch that something is going on that could put them in danger, your hunches are probably right.
