riding to ‘chase the sun’ in 2014The date for this year’s ride is Saturday 21st June - the longest day. The concept, route and basic arrangements are the same as last year’s successful ride, although for 2014 a new category has been introduced to give the option of 'Relay' rides, aimed at pairs or small groups of riders splitting the distance and cycling in a tag-team to minimise rest-stops and maximise the chance of a sunset completion. Hopefully this will attract a range of new riders to the event, who can get a taste for the longest day ride without having to pedal for all 17 hours! Interest in riding next mid-summer's day has been high, with the number of riders currently signed-up to ride already exceeding the total of participants from last year, and so with six months still to go before the sunrise departure, Chase the Sun '14 already looks set to be the biggest and best adventure yet!

What is Chase the Sun? It is an annual cycle challenge, riding across the UK on the year’s longest day, departing at sunrise from the east coast and aiming to reach the west coast before sunset. It is a free event, open to all riders, inspired to tackle the endurance, navigational, and motivational elements involved in riding more than 200 miles and every minute of the summer solstice. In 2014 the ride will depart at 4.30am as the first rays of morning sun rise over Kent’s Isle of Sheppey, and participants will target a scheduled finish some 17 hours and 200 miles later at sunset on the seafront at Burnham-on-Sea. The organisers stress that this event is not a race, simply “a ride”. It is free to join, with no competitive or charitable agenda. The concept and endeavour of the event is in part a tribute to the art of Bristol-based artist Richard Long, himself a keen cyclist, and inspired by his works on experience of time and landscape. To find out more, or to sign up to participate in this year’s ride, refer to the website – www.chasethesun.org

avenue tennis club new Head coachHi, I am the new Head Tennis Coach at Avenue Tennis Club and I look forward to meeting local residents of all ages who are interested in ‘having a go’ at tennis. My name is Jonathan (‘Jonny’) Horn I am aged 29 and I have been involved in tennis coaching for 6 years. I hold the qualification of Senior Club Coach (level 4 of 5). Although born in Bristol I was, until moving to Burnham in February, previously head coach at several Glasgow tennis clubs and head of performance at a Virgin Active sports complex.

In 2013 I spent 3 months at The Global Tennis Academy in Mallorca working and learning under legendary tennis coach Jofre Porta (coach of Rafa Nadal and Carlos Moya). I do understand that learning tennis can be frustrating and perhaps a little difficult however my aim is to make my tuition sessions fun and informative so that anyone that takes up the game will benefit from the immense enjoyment it generates.

I have now set up a continuous group coaching programme at the Avenue (located just off the Berrow Road between Rectory Road and Stoddens Road) and the various sessions will suit all ages and abilities (whether new to the game or returning after perhaps a long absence). There is also a vibrant Junior programme. A new group Tennis Xpress programme is starting in May and this is geared to Adults new or returning to the game. If a group session is not what you want just call me (01278 782758) as I am give new members a FREE individual 30 minute induction. I look forward to meeting you.

thank You!The Somerset Wildlife Trust is extremely grateful for the support that was given towards the Plant Sale and Open Garden held at Rookery House, the Causeway, on 3rd May. The magnificent and record sum of over £3200 was raised and all will be used in Somerset Protecting Wildlife for the Future - the logo line of the Trust. Thanks go to everyone who was able to help either by providing plants, cakes and raffle prizes, or by assisting in the organisation for the event and on the day, and by coming to buy. Over 300 people attended and enjoyed the garden and refreshments in, on the day itself, good weather. Thanks also to Gill Isgar and Mark & Ricky Popham for the use of the field as the car park - this of course is absolutely essential for this event at this location. This was tabled as the major fundraising event for the Mendip Hills Area Group of the Somerset Wildlife Trust and this event has achieved that goal.

risotto recipeThe start of the British asparagus season is a moment of great celebration at BoS Food Fest HQ. We love it! It is such a short season though that we are always looking for new ways to enjoy this most English of treats.

Ingredients: 2 decent sized bits of chicken (approx. 2 breasts) – cold leftovers are perfect. Chop these up into 1” chunks; 250g of risotto (sometimes labelled carnaroli) rice; 8 stems of asparagus, trimmed into 1” sections (option to prepare tips at about 3” long to present like the

picture); shallots or one medium white onion – this needs to be very thinly diced ; 1 or 2 gloves of garlic (to your own taste) – crushed; 250ml of white wine; 1 to 1.5 litres of chicken stock (again this dish works particularly well if you have recently had a roast chicken and made stock form the carcass) ; 50g butter, olive oil, salt and pepper and some grated Parmesan to serve.

If starting with raw chicken, then stir fry this until cooked through and then set aside. Bring your stock up to a simmer, then melt the butter in the same pan as you used for the chicken and fry your shallots and garlic on a low heat so you don’t add any colour. Add the rice and stir well so all coated. Turn the heat up to medium and after two or three minutes stop stirring. Add the wine and cook until all the alcohol has been burned off, grab your ladle and add a ladle full of hot stock to the rice. Stir very gently.

Keep a close eye on it and keep repeating the process of adding a ladle and heating it until it has all been absorbed. When you think you are about two ladles from been done, heat about 0.5” inch of water in a wide pan, and cook your asparagus until tender. Do taste the risotto so it’s cooked to the texture you like it, add the chicken and asparagus sections (but not the tips) to the risotto and warm through. To serve, stir in a final knob of butter and a decent amount of grated Parmesan, season with salt and pepper. Serve in deep bowls with the asparagus tips on top.

You could be a recycling Winner - By nick caterRecycling Week later this month is a great excuse for everyone in Burnham-on-Sea to consider how to make the best use of their waste. This year there is even more of an incentive, as careful recycling of a small old electrical item could net you a nice £100 prize! Recycling Week is 16th – 23rd June, reminding us that a heavyweight refuse bin is a waste of money and resources, and a potent source of greenhouse gases when its contents are dumped into costly landfill. There are so many ways to recycle, from the food waste and many materials collected weekly at the kerbside, to home composting. But recycling and reuse do not stop there, given the possibilities of recycling while shopping, such as batteries at supermarkets, inhalers at chemists, glasses at opticians, and donating good condition items to charity shops or the Sedgemoor Furniture Store reuse group. For the widest range of recycling, check out the efficient systems of Somerset’s 16 recycling centres, including Highbridge and the five locations now open 8am - 4pm seven days a week, such as Bridgwater Saltlands.

During Recycling Week, Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) and waste firm Viridor, which runs Somerset’s recycling centres, are encouraging some extra effort. A free prize draw for £100 is being offered as an incentive for any adult taking in a broken or worn small electrical item to a Somerset recycling centre as they deposit other waste. The definition of small electrical – to use the technical term, small WEEE or Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment – includes anything handheld with a plug or batteries for power. That can range from a kettle, toaster or iron to a radio or CD player, from hairdryers to curling tongs and even an electric toothbrush or power drill.

Just fill in the form at the recycling centre – which also asks you to pledge to continue recycling and offers the option to sign up for SWP’s helpful Sorted e-zine – and £100 could be yours!

static Bike ride for charityOn Saturday 26th April, Somerset Rural Youth Project (SRYP), in partnership with 1610 Leisure, held a 1000km sponsored static bike ride challenge in five 1610 centres across Somerset. The event was planned and delivered by SRYP’s young people’s fundraising group, assisted by staff from SRYP and 1610. They won prizes for the most km cycled, including a month’s free gym membership and various 1610 merchandise kindly donated by the centres. Ross Scott, aged 20, won first prize by riding a staggering 100km throughout the day. In total across the five centres, 30 young people, volunteers and staff rode 1002.27km, raising approximately £260 which will directly benefit young people involved in SRYP’s various projects. There are plans for the newly formed relationship between SRYP and 1610 Leisure to lead to more partnership working and possibly more fundraising events in the future. To find out more about SRYP visit www.sryp.org.uk or about 1610 visit www.1610.org.uk.

Burnham-on-sea farmers’ market: sarah davies of ‘Wookey farm’We are lucky to have recently recruited Sarah as a trader at Burnham Market. She sells a delicious range of soft goat’s cheese and goat’s milk. Sarah and her partner Ian both grew up on farms and have a wealth of experience between them. They now have a small dairy goat farm situated in Wookey village. They milk a herd of about 50 British Toggenburg goats and sell the highly digestible milk as well as creamy soft cheeses that they make on the farm. The market for goat meat has been increasing steadily in recent years. Kid goat meat has a rich meaty flavour, is lower in cholesterol than beef, pork or lamb and is high in protein and iron. Sarah has recently been introducing goat meat into her range. She began by introducing goat sausages and tagines as tasters and found that customers, many of whom had not tried goat meat before, were very pleasantly surprised at the taste, and she is now selling an increasing amount of the meat. There is also a campsite on the farm and a warm welcome if you’d like to pay a visit, meet the goats and see them being milked.

road smart: new scheme to reduce road casualtiesIn just one year in Avon and Somerset, 452 people were killed or seriously injured on our roads. Around one third of these were young people aged 17 to 24. To help reduce this figure we have launched a free education course for drivers, and learner drivers, in the force area. Road Smart is available for all drivers but we

are especially keen to encourage young drivers to attend the session. The course has been specially created on behalf of Avon and Somerset Police. It aims to raise awareness of potential hazards on the roads and build on motorists’ existing driving knowledge and experience.

• 95% of all collisions are caused by human error • 1 in 5 new drivers will have a crash within their first six months of driving • Road crashes are the biggest single killer of young people in the UK.Some insurance companies will offer a discount to young drivers who have completed the

workshop. The course is a one-off interactive session and will be held at venues across the force area. It is based on the successful training package that is used for driver awareness courses nationally. Supt Ian Smith said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to benefit from a free course that could be a life-saving opportunity. The training will be delivered by the TTC group, a professional road safety education provider. The national course this is based upon is widely hailed as excellent and thought-provoking and really does influence driver behaviour.”

Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said: “I am delighted Avon and Somerset Police have designed a unique road safety package to further educate all road users, but particularly young drivers." Courses will take place for the next 11 months. Two versions of the session have been created, one for young drivers (aged 17 to 24) and one for other drivers. If you are, or know of, a young driver who would like to join this course, or you are aged 25 or over and interested in attending, go to www.roadsmart.org for further details.rset

cashback WebsitesA few months ago, my friend introduced me to cashback websites. I had heard of these before, but never really gave it much thought. He explained to me that I could earn cashback for buying items online.

Being fairly sceptical, I gave it a try by going to the cashback website and then searching for car insurance. A whole host of results came back, some promising up to £70 back, simply for taking car insurance through them.

I ended up getting £60 back as a cash payment around 6 weeks later, having bought car insurance at the same discounted price that I would have paid going direct.

If you would like to give it a try, use this link http://www.topcashback.co.uk/ref/Buzzarn

Just register for a new account and then search for any retailer that you might want to use. The cashback amount is displayed and you just click through to the retailer via the cashback site. Your purchase will be tracked and you can see the cashback amount within a few days and normally can get the money out within a few weeks by logging back into the site and choosing “Account”, then “Payments”

There are some very large cashback payments for companies like Sky TV and mobile phone companies, plus other retailers such as Tesco, Marks and Spencer, Debenhams, Argos and much more, offer cashback for every purchase you make, as long you go through the cashback website first.

Burnham and Highbridge BandBurnham and Highbridge Band continues its ever-popular season of Sunday Evening Concert in the Princess Hall, with another performance on Sunday 29th June at 7.45pm. Ken Henton, the band’s secretary said that “over the past four or five years the concerts have attracted better and better audiences, with some performances seeing very few empty seats. The concerts attract both a local following but also holiday makers, some of whom are themselves players. It is always gratifying when visitors come and make themselves known to us. We have

chatted with players and band enthusiasts from the far south-west to the far north-east.”The popularity of the concerts is down to the Musical Director, David Fisher’s programming of a

mix of band standards and newer, lighter music and the continuing musicianship of the players. He says: “If you have not heard the band recently, come along and enjoy an evening of lively music.”

Tickets can be purchased on the door and from Princess Box Office at £6, concessions (over 65 and under 17) £5.

It is a life-changing condition that not only causes pain and fatigue, but other symptoms include un-refreshing sleep, headaches, IBS, cognitive disturbances (such as word mix ups, memory impairments, clumsiness and dizziness), and sensitivity to weather changes, noise and environmental factors. Chronic fatigue syndrome/ME is a condition where you have long-term disabling tiredness (fatigue). Volunteers’ WeekVolunteers’ Week runs from the 1st to 7th June and is the annual celebration of the contribution made by millions of volunteers across the UK. Every year 20 million people volunteer in the UK. Between them they give 100 million hours each week and their contribution is worth £40 billion to the UK economy. Many services we take for granted depend heavily on volunteers, for example the

NHS, the judiciary (magistrates), the police (special constables), mountain rescue and cave rescue services. The Olympic and Paralympic Games wouldn’t have happened without the 70,000 Games Makers and 8,000 London Ambassadors.

Events are taking place throughout the country, and locally Volunteer Centre Mendip & Sedgemoor will have a display in Bridgwater to tell people who don’t already know, about the benefits of volunteering. We are also organising a special celebration to thank all the volunteers who helped during the recent flooding on the Levels and who continue to help with the recovery.

If you want to find a volunteering opportunity or if your community group needs help in recruiting volunteers, then Volunteer Centre Mendip & Sedgemoor can help. Just call us on 01749 346830 or email: [email protected]. We are no longer based in Bridgwater but will be popping up in the community, so look out for us near you soon. You can find information and resources for Volunteers’ Week and lots more on our website: www.mendipcommunitysupport.org.uk.

the Burnham Buffer stop memorialA group of local historians have been working towards installing a Buffer Stop in Burnham as a permanent memorial of our long-lost railway. As nothing currently exists in Burnham to show that a railway ever existed there, we believe that the buffers will be an appropriate reminder of Burnham's Railway Heritage. At the top of Pier Street, opposite the entrance to the Reed's Arms, is a small triangular pebbled area, and we have recently been granted planning permission to install a set of old railway buffers – close to where it was from 1930 until the line was taken up in the 1960s. Back in April 2011 an old buffer stop was lifted from its location at the former Royal Ordnance Factory Site at

Puriton and moved to a temporary storage area. We are very grateful to BAE Systems who donated the buffer stop, to Nick Bell of R K Bell Plant

for donating the use of a JCB, Dave Parsons who gave up his Saturday morning operating the JCB to remove the buffer stop, and Mike Lawrence of Huntspill who donated both the transport and a storage and work area for the buffer stop. Mike will also donate his time and vehicle to deliver the finished buffers to the installation site. A new wooden beam has been offered free. The paint has been donated and a group of local volunteers are about to sand and paint the buffers. We do however need to raise funds for the legal approvals and also the installation costs. The next few months are going to be critical to the project’s success. So if this project brings back happy memories of days gone by, please show your support to help our fundraising by making a donation in the collecting tins around Burnham, or by cheque made payable to ‘Burnham Buffer Stop Memorial’, or paid directly to the Buffer Memorial Account at HSBC Bank, Account Number: 11301578, Sort Code: 40-13-32. We cannot bring our railway back, but by making a donation, however small, you will be helping future visitors and generations to ask questions about this memorial. Thank you.

somerset rebels speedwaySpeedway riders are the modern-day gladiators of the sporting world, 4 riders per race going head to head on 500cc motorbikes over 4 laps of the shale-based oval track, the bikes accelerating from 0-60mph in just 3 seconds, faster than an F1 racing car, but have no gears and NO BRAKES!

The Somerset Rebels are one of a number of speedway clubs that operate in the UK from Plymouth in the south to Edinburgh in the north, their Oaktree Arena track being situated just off junction 22 on the M5, they race their home matches most Friday nights throughout the speedway season that operates from mid-March until the end of October.

Formed in just 2000, the Somerset Rebels currently operate in the sport’s Premier League, which is the 2nd tier of racing in the UK, their Oaktree Arena track, which is 300 metres in length, is widely acknowledged to be one of the best speedway tracks in the UK, a fact borne out by the fact that Sky Sports are annual visitors to the track in order to broadcast one of the Rebels home matches, and will, once again, be bringing their cameras to the Oaktree Arena on Tuesday 11th June.

A speedway meeting comprises 15 heats of pulsating action of what must be one of the most extreme spectator sports in the UK, but it is also one that appeals to fans of all ages, from 1-91!

Somerset meetings get underway at 7.30pm, but from when the gates open at 5.30pm until 7pm fans can enter the pits where you can watch the riders prepare their bikes, take photos and also have a chat to the riders – what other sport can you get ‘up close and personal’ with the main people. Kids can also apply to be meeting mascots or hold birthday parties in the Oaktree Clubhouse adjacent to the track. Looking for a team bonding night out or something different to treat your staff then have a look at the Rebels website to see our offers and discounts or just simply email us.

so why not give it a try, we know that you won’t be disappointed………

Volunteering- why it’s good for the soul!“Volunteering your time for any charity or organisation is good for the soul”, said Secret World fundraiser Debbie O’Keefe. The local wildlife rescue centre employs many people of all ages and ability on a voluntary basis, and yet they still need more! Volunteer Greg is one of many volunteers that help in so many areas of Secret World. Now a retired driving instructor, Greg helps with not just fundraising, but animal rescue, maintenance, and ferret racing during our open weekends. Other volunteers that help at Secret World help in reception, laundry and animal care . But the charity is urgently seeking anyone who enjoys meeting people to join the fundraising team to help with offsite collections. Secret World fundraiser Debbie O’Keefe said: “We have helped so many people gain confidence by getting back into the workplace, which has given them the start they need to get back into paid work. We are now seeking friendly outgoing people who enjoy talking about the work that we do here at Secret World, there is no sales background necessary, just the ability to talk to people.”As the busy season is already in full swing, with over 342 animal admissions in April alone, Secret World are appealing for help in fundraising. For more information on how you can join us and be part of our team, please contact [email protected] or download a volunteer application form from the website www.secretworld.org, or call 01278 783250.

comedy double BillStage 2 drama group will present their latest comedy performance from Friday 13th June - Saturday 14th June at Berrow Village Hall.

A comedy double bill will be presented including ‘Strictly Sex Factor On Ice’, by David Tristram:- A struggling amateur group take desperate measures to harness popular TV reality talent show trends in order to get anyone at all to turn up to their performances. The other dramatic entertainment on the bill will be ‘Streuth’, by Michael Green:- This is a fringe style comedy piece in the murder mystery genre. Let us just say that the awfulness of the murder is exceeded only by the gruesomeness of the acting....! Before and after the performance and during the interval, drinks will be available from the bar. During the interval a light supper will be served, and there will be a fun quiz as well as a raffle (results announced at the end).

Tickets (which include food) are £7.50 for adults and £5 for children at or below junior school age (11 years). Children under 5 are free as long as they do not occupy a seat.
