The job of producing the newsletter has changed dramatically since 2004, when Doug did most of the work in a “cut and paste” format. Back then, a large part of the copy consisted of producing finishing race results, which we now find exclusively in on- line sources. Back then, the copy ma- chine was indispensable! Kent Wiley, the club Historian kept copies of all the newsletters, for those who might want to research the style of that era. He told me that his return to St. Louis was part of a five year plan that was to culminate in the sale of his family’s business and the retirement of his parents. Most of us remember the recession that racked the economy of our country in 2008. That recession adversely affected the five year plan, turning it into a ten year period before Doug could get himself, his wife Danielle and daugh- ter Delaney back to Sarasota. From 1998-2001, Doug owned a small music shop from which he sold CDs here and on-line. In 2001, he took a position as Marketing & Licensing Director for BPI Collectibles, a small company that produced sports memorabilia for over 50 Division I Universities. He now operates Navigate Bookkeeping, a small firm which provides bookkeeping services for small businesses. the word that she needed to step away from her role as Newsletter Editor for the Manasota Track Club newsletter, a pioneer from days gone by stepped up to accept the assignment.  Doug Fish edited and produced the newsletter from 2002 to 2004, at which time he left Sara-sota to return to St. Louis, MO. to take a role in his family’s business. The job of producing the newsletter has changed dramatically since 2004, when Doug did most of the work in a “cut and paste” format. February is by far one of my favorite months here in Florida. The humid-ity has died down, the mornings hold a slight chill, and the evening sunsets are spectacularly pink. But as I con-templated a trip to Richmond to visit my sister, and possibly see a little snow, I realized February is also the busiest race month of the year. Every weekend brings a new venue and a different dis-tance, from halves, to ultras, to 5Ks and 10Ks, there’s always a race to be found.

I kicked off February with the Mu-sic half. Even with fewer bands it is still a beautiful course, and who wouldn’t want to run their Saturday morning long route with a thousand of your clos-est friends and lots of cheering specta-tors. After a quick week to recover, the Ultra at Oscar Scherer turned out to be a little painful and a lot slower, but I found some great company (thanks for the encouragement, Rick) and managed to finish. Dave, as usual, had a great spread and the BEST volunteer force of any race. Thank you all so much! This was the first year for a new racing series race, the Superhero 5k, so we caught a break from the longer distances in mid-February, with a quick out and back at Benderson. Unfortunately, mother nature decided to remind us that we lived in Florida still, and the temperatures were a bit high, especially for those in full super-hero uniforms. But post-race party and awards were terrific. It was a touching reminder of why we do what we do to see all of the names of the kids in foster care written on the ground as you

made your way to the finish line. This was a great race for an even greater cause. The last weekend will bring us Gasparilla, always a running party with great friends and a spectacular expo.

Once again this year Derrick and I, and a contingent of MTC members, at-tended the Bradenton Runners Club annual banquet. They are ushering in a new guard with a new President and Vice-President. We would like to wish Mark Berte and Lori Dunlap all the best in their new roles. We have many members who belong to both clubs and want to show support for all run-ners in our community. Thank you to all our BRC friends for a terrific time!

March is a little less busy, especial-ly with the cancellation of Life in the Son. Unfortunately, they ran into some permitting issues that could not be re-

solved adequately to ensure the safety of our runners. Please see the website for the updated racing series. Thanks to my wonderful neighbors for securing us entries, I have the privilege of running the Skyway 10K this year. I’ve been told this is something to just experience, and not to worry about time. I plan to enjoy it as a run, not a race.

Wishing everyone happy running and continued good health!!

Mtc BanquetI asked Doug when he

first became involved in running, and his response was “in after practice runs” when he was a ten year old on  a soccer team coached by his father. His participa-tion in soccer continued through high school in Bellville, Ill., a suburb of St. Louis.  He said he didn’t enter his first road race un-til after college, when he ran to impress an athletic girlfriend. The race was a 10k, which he managed to finish, although he had no idea what 10k meant at that time!

Doug went on to be-

come a dedicated run-ner and triathlete, having completed three half-iron-man triathlons to date.  Doug describes himself as a “middle of the pack run-ner”. Doug is now looking forward to encouraging his seven year old daugh-ter into developing an ac-tive lifestyle.

Welcome back to the Manasota Track Club, Doug Fish, and may your tenure on the Board be rewarding to you and your family, and to the Manaso-ta Track Club membership, sponsors, and affiliated charitable organizations.
