I am hoping to have someone from the Kalgoorlie Ex-Servicemen’s Memorial Club come along and talk with us for a short time about Remembrance Day. It is going to be a busy few weeks for the club. Tuesday 12 November Rotary Club of Boulder have invited us to join them at their meeting to hear Captain Peter Hammarsedt who is from Norway and is captain of one of the Sea Shepherd vessels which is heading to Antarctica. This should be a very interesting evening. Monday 18 November will see Anne Skinner telling us all about her experience as a Rotary observer on an Interplast team. Monday 25 November Norm De Grussa will be in Kalgoorlie with Exchange students from District 9450. Last year Kalgoorlie hosted a joint meeting at which the students gave a presentation to us all. It was a fun night. The plan this year is for the students to invite the clubs to come to the Camp School on Monday 25 November. The students would run the joint meeting. Norm would arrange a tour of the Camp School so we can include in our club program as a Vocational meeting. On the 27 it is planned for the Club to have a fundraising activity at the Lighting of the Christmas tree. Peter will have more information for us at the meeting this week. Edward has asked if Club members could assist with the novelty holes at the Rydges Charity Golf Day on Friday 29 November. Friday 6 December is our Social night to enjoy the Repertory Club's Christmas Show. Always a great night out. On the 8 December the club has been asked to assist with the cooking for the Paddington Christmas Tree. Peter will have more information and details at the meeting on Monday night. The 16 December will be our last meeting for 2013. That night it is planned to invite supporters of the club along so we can say thank you for their support throughout the year. We will then have a three week break before heading off at a hopefully more subdued pace into 2014. Our first activity for the year will be the Great Aussie breakfast on 26 January. This is a joint activity with all three clubs cooking breakfast for over 1000 attendees at the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder's Australia Day Celebrations. Peter will have more details for us at the meeting. Club Bulletin - Issue 15 Monday 11 November 2013

Monday being Remembrance Day we pause to reflect on how different our lives would be today if the brave men and women of our armed services hadn't put their lives on the line to protect our democracy. I am hoping to have someone from the Kalgoorlie Ex-Servicemen’s Memorial Club come along and talk with us for a short time about Remembrance Day.

On the night we will be presenting cheques to Kathleen Day Playgroup and Kalgoorlie-Boulder PCYC. These two organisations are recipients of funds raised in the Battle of the Brains Quiz Night.

It is a big night for Gloria Moyle as we will be inducting her into the Club. Gloria has been regularly attending meetings since our Information night in late August.

This is a joint activity with all three clubs cooking breakfast for over 1000 attendees at the City of Kalgoor l ie-Bou lder ' s Aus t ra l ia Day Celebrations. Peter will have more details for us at the meeting.

Enjoy the rest of your week while you Engage Rotary, Change Lives.

A short history of The Rotary Foundation

In 1917, RI President Arch C. Klumph proposed that an endowment be set up “for the purpose of doing good in the world.” In 1928, when the endowment fund had grown to more than US$5,000, it was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International.

Five Trustees, including Klumph, were appointed to “hold, invest, manage, and administer all of its property . . . as a single trust, for the furtherance of the purposes of RI.” Two years later, the Foundation made its first grant of $500 to the International Society for Crippled Children. The organization, created by Rotarian Edgar F. “Daddy” Allen, later grew into the Easter Seals.

The Great Depression and World War II both impeded the Foundation’s growth, but the need for lasting world peace generated great postwar interest in its development. After Rotary’s founder, Paul P. Harris, died in 1947, contributions began pouring into Rotary International, and the Paul Harris Memorial Fund was created to build the Foundation.

That year, the first Foundation program – the forerunner of Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships – was established. In 1965-66, three new programs were launched: Group Study Exchange, Awards for Technical Training, and Grants for Activities in Keeping with the Objective of The Rotary Foundation, which was later called Matching Grants.

The Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grants program was launched in 1978, and Rotary Volunteers was created as a part of that program in 1980. PolioPlus was announced in 1984-85, and the next year brought Rotary Grants for University Teachers. The first peace forums were held in 1987-88, leading to the Foundation's peace and conflict studies programs.

Throughout this time, support of the Foundation grew tremendously. Since the first donation of $26.50 in 1917, it has received contributions totaling more than $1 billion. More than $70 million was donated in 2003-04 alone. To date, more than one million individuals have been recognized as Paul Harris Fellows – people who have given US$1,000 to the Annual Programs Fund or have had that amount contributed in their name.

Such strong support, along with Rotarian involvement worldwide, ensures a secure future for The Rotary Foundation as it continues its vital work for international understanding and world peace.

Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie

Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie members once again turned out to help Kalgoorlie Boulder Urban Landcare Group (KBULG).

Members showed up on Sunday 3 November to help Kim and her KBULG team with propagating program at Karlkurla Park.

The park has many species of native flora and the KBULG team works hard to ensure that the various species will be around for a long time to come.

Since August, we've sent a team of Interplast volunteers to Samoa, we've delivered an Emergency Management of Severe Burns training activity in Nepal and we've had a team of seven volunteers undertake an activity in Baguio City in the Philippines.

We've also facilitated two separate training attachments for local medical professionals from Indonesia and Bangladesh to receive further training in Australia.

Your donation will ensure more of this hard work continues. Here are some other recent Interplast achievements.
