President Esther Roadnight OAM

What a week and that was without any races!! I'm sitting outside listening to our resident frogs croaking happily having a quiet Chai Latte enjoying this glorious spring weather. Then reality struck - it's Thursday. Time to do my column for the Bulletin.

We had a great meeting Monday night with four guests who are interested in Rotary. These people approached me. It demonstrates to me that if we are out and about in the community people notice, think about what we are doing and want to find out more. Rose, Anupam, Jo and Philip it was lovely having you

join us for the meeting. We do hope to see you at more of our meetings.

During the meeting I talked about club visioning. This exercise has been undertaken by a number of clubs whose members have found it most beneficial. I will be getting more information from District so club members are more informed about the process before we, as a club, make a final decision.

Sunday 14 September saw a couple of Rotarians take part in the propagation morning at KBULG. The Boulder Cup being later that day saw numbers less than normal. I took photos of the plants we propagated

in April. It is amazing to see how much they have grown.

Our Vocational visit to the Courthouse is fast approaching. Monday 20 October we will meet at the courthouse at the entrance that was the old post office entry. We need to arrive at 4.15 for a 4.30 start. The tour will take around 1 hour. We will then enjoy pizza and a drink. Boulder and Hannans clubs have been invited to join us.

The following night Tuesday 21 October we will be going along to the boulder meeting to hear our visitors from the School of St Jude's.

There will be 2 guests. If you would like to host one or both visitors please let me know. Members were surprised to learn that only $720 funds a teacher for a year. The night will be a partners night and interested members of our community are also invited to come along. Cherie will publish more details in the bulletin.

President John Chatterton was a guest at the meeting. The Rotary Club of Boulder are planning a car rally and

issued the challenge to members to participate and maybe just maybe snatch the winners trophy.

Enjoy the rest of your week as you Light up Rotary.

From President Esther ...

Busy, busy, busy .. the best way to describe our last meeting!

As President Esther mentioned in her column, it was great to have four guests at our meeting, all interested in Rotary and we’ve received nomination forms from Jo and Anupam (see the next page).

District Directories were handed out to all Directors and all other members were informed that the directory can be accessed online at the District website. at http://rotary9465.org.au/

President Esther distributed Foundation money boxes for everyone to collect their loose change (or notes!). We look forward to getting many full boxes back in the future.

“Humanity in Motion - Down Under” books were presented to members Stephen Harper, Anne Skinner and Charmaine Maisey.

A reminder that we meet for a joint meeting on Tuesday 21 October to welcome Felix and Sarah from The School of St Jude. Partners are welcome to come along and the meeting will be open to the public. Read more about Felix further into the Bulletin.

Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie

The Club has received nomination forms from two people interested in Rotary. If any members have any objection to either nomination, please contact President Esther directly by Wednesday 1 October.

Jo Russell

My name is Jo Russell, married to John - resident in Kalgoorlie for 40 odd years. I have three children, two adults and one aged 10. The eldest and youngest both have autism.

I was formerly a registered nurse, but have now handed my registration in as it did not fit in well with our family dynamics. I’m currently not employed anywhere, although I’m looking to change that.

I was brought up with an ethic of community service, had a father who is a life member of two Apex clubs, so it’s been on my mind to join Rotary for some years now.

I look forward to joining Kalgoorlie Rotary, and becoming involved with community projects, as I am aware of the amazing things that Rotary does to support the community, and the many facets it covers.

My interests are reading, piano, keeping fit and mixing with plenty of people and being social. I find people very interesting,

and am always interested in a person’s story and what makes them who they are.

I like and celebrate difference and diversity, and am very conscious of social justice, as people come from all ways of life, and each person has their own history and make up, all of which should be celebrated.

That’s a bit about us, and now back over to you :D :D :D

Anupam Dua

"Hello, my name is 'Anupam Dua'. I was born and brought up in the beautiful country - India.

I completed my Bachelors degree in engineering in India and then I worked for a few years in India. I had successfully completed my Post Graduate qualifications in Project Management and Organisational Change from the Australian Universities.

I along with my husband have been staying in Kalgoorlie since last two years. Currently, I work full-time, as a Business Excellence Facilitator for a manufacturing company here in Kalgoorlie.

I enjoy living in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. I always strive to contribute towards my local community".

Our little green babies have grown since they were planted back in April!

Felix Mollel has been working at St Jude’s since 2005, first as a bus driver and later as a visitor coordinator. He is from the Maasai tribe, who are semi-nomadic people from across Northern Tanzania and Kenya. He and his younger brother Obed grew up together in a traditional Maasai cluster of huts known as a “boma,” helping the extended family tend to their cattle herd. His mother lived in a different boma with her second husband and their four children.

Felix attended a government-run primary school where one teacher supervised up to 150 students in a class. After that, he had to compete with tens of thousands of other Tanzanian students to secure a place in secondary school. He, along with 240 students in his class, missed out with only one student passing the entrance exam. His family then decided to send him to a school that charged a fee. It was a major strain on the family’s finances so his father purchased a camera which Felix used after school to take photos for money. With no time for study, lack of class resources and under qualified teachers, Felix was struggling at school and felt that it was all too much for him. He decided to drop out of school and become a driver in Arusha so that he could financially contribute to his young brother’s education.

By that time, Felix had heard about The School of St Jude and decided he wanted to work there. He applied several times, despite no positions being available at that time. He refused to give up and continued to try to make ends meet, earning a living by selling ground nuts, sugar cane, second hand clothing and chips. Finally, in 2005 his luck turned around and he got a job at St Jude’s, driving the small red bus to transport the primary students to and from school.

In 2006 Felix married Nemburis and their first daughter, Emily, was born a year later. The second child, Abigail, was born in 2011. Starting a family of his own made Felix even more determined to develop his work skills. He knew that driving a bus would get him around Arusha, but learning English and computer skills could get him around the world! He dreamed of meeting people from different places, learning new skills and ensuring a secure future for his family. For three years, he practiced English with the students on the bus and with the international volunteers.

One day he prepared a speech and spent a week memorising it. He later approached the Director of International Relations Kim Saville for a job opportunity. Kim was impressed with his determination and encouraged him to keep practicing English and learning basic computer skills. Felix drew on knowledge from his Maasai upbringing, remembering that challenging situations offer a good opportunity to prove your strength.

In 2009, Felix’s hard work paid off and he was promoted to the role of Visitor Coordinator at St Jude’s. In this role he shows visitors from all over the world around the school which offers free education to over 1,650 of the poorest children from Arusha, Tanzania. Felix’s skills have developed - from speaking fluent English, understanding Aussie slang and sarcasm, to being a computer wiz, he has achieved so much.

Felix travelled to Australia on behalf of The School of St Jude in October 2013 and he recently presented at the International Rotary Convention in June 2014. He has experience speaking to a wide range of audiences from Rotary Clubs, schools, corporate groups and media.

Felix is an inspiration to his family, colleagues and all who he comes into contact with.

Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER

FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Quote of the Week

The entire world is attempting to climb

from the bottomless pit of

international rancor and strife … our

only hope is the very thin thread of

international cooperation.
