Now that Changeover has been and gone we begin our new Rotary year. I know I am very excited about the forthcoming year.

Members of the Board have met twice over the last week and will be bringing some exciting ideas to the Club for us to participate in this year. We will only be able to achieve this with all members participating as much as they possibly can. Our successes will be measured by the involvement of us all.

Last Rotary year we had 9 members of the Club submit applications to become Centurions. A fantastic effort. We will be using the same formula this year as we did last year. Each meeting you attend $2 of your meeting fee is allocated to Centurion. Prior to the end of the year you will be invited to 'top up' the amount

you have in 'kitty' to make the $100 and then all applications and renewals will be submitted to District.

Which brings me to attendance at our regular meetings and I quote from the booklet ABCs of Rotary:

"Although RI Bylaws require members to attend only 50% of all meetings, many clubs encourage more frequent attendance because the absence of any member deprives the club of the value of its diversified membership, the contributions of all members to ongoing club projects, and the personal fellowship of each member."

If you are not at a meeting, and it is quite understandable that sometimes it is not possible, you are missed by all other members. You also miss hearing about vital information relating to Club Projects and generally what is happing within the

Club and the wider Rotary world.

The Board’s thoughts are with a few of our members this week as they are dealing with health and family issues. Be assured your Family within the Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie are thinking of you and extend their hand of Rotary fellowship and friendship and wish you and your family a speedy recovery. Don't forget we are all here and willing to help out in any way we can. Please, don't forget we are all here for you. We are all busy with our lives, but a call will ensure support.

Please enjoy your week as we Light up Rotary

District Governor Brian Eddy was raised in the idyllic environment of Applecross of the 1950’s. He attended Applecross Primary School and completed his secondary education at Wesley College. His working career started as a clerk at the then Department of Native Welfare for a year before joining the family’s hardware business at Canning Bridge.

Whilst working full time Brian attended Perth Technical College followed by Western Australian Institute of Technology (now Curtin University) and obtained his Accountancy and Company Secretarial qualifications. After the hardware business was sold to Alco (the forerunner of today’s Bunnings) he acquired a Post Graduate Diploma in Education and commenced as a Senior Lecturer at Fremantle Technical College in the Business & Management Studies Dept.

Brian then commenced his own Accountancy Practice operating from premises in Willetton. The Practice specialises in business and tax advice to Small Medium Enterprises. In 2010 he commenced a Transition to Retirement programme which is now well under way. As he says, “after each trip there is less transition and more retirement”.

The family has always been very active in community activities. From Brian’s teenage days with the Anglican Youth Fellowship, early 20’s an inaugural member of Melville Apex and then the Rotary Club of Rossmoyne. As a young family in the Rossmoyne/Shelley area Brian and his wife Pam were always involved with Brownies; Cubs; Junior football and net ball; local tennis club etc. Their three children are now married adults and have produced seven grandchildren.

Brian’s time in Rotary started out as an Awardee in Western Australia’s inaugural RYLA seminar. He joined the Rotary Club of Rossmoyne in May 1982 and has held all positions within the Club, including President in 1993/94. He served on District 9470’s GSE Committee for a number of years and has been the National Treasurer of ROMAC since February 2009.

The Rossmoyne Club hosted the 2008 District Conference which was MC’d by Brian. His Club has been generous enough to award him a Paul Harris Fellowship with sapphire.

DG Brian succeeds PDG Erwin in 2014-15. He will be assisted across the District by his Assistant Governors (pictured below).

GARY C.K. HUANG RI PRESIDENT 2014-15

Elected for the 2014-15 term, Gary C.K. Huang is Rotary's first Chinese president. Growing up in Taiwan, Huang was encouraged by his father to get involved in activities and clubs -- and not simply focus on grades. Helping others, his father said, would help him become a better leader. The message stuck. In 1976, Huang joined the Rotary Club of Taipei. And despite the pressures of a successful career and growing family, Huang made time for his club: "I wanted to continue my work in Rotary no matter what." Combining family with humanitarian service is important to Huang, whose wife and three grown children are also Rotary members. "Why leave your family to do your Rotary work? You can do it together. Then doing good becomes a family event."

Gary C.K. Huang is an adviser for Wah Lee Industrial Corp. and Bank of Panhsin, and is director of Federal Corporation and Sunty Development Co. Ltd. He previously was president of Malayan Overseas Insurance Co. and chair of Taiwan Sogo Shinkong Security Co. Ltd.

A Rotarian since 1976, Huang has served RI as vice-president, director, Foundation trustee, International Assembly group discussion leader, regional session leader, task force member and coordinator, committee member and chair, and district governor. He also was chair of the 2014 International Assembly Committee; adviser for the Permanent Fund Committee for Taiwan, Macau, and Hong Kong; and PolioPlus advocacy adviser for Taiwan.

He has been instrumental in membership development throughout Asia. As a Rotary Foundation trustee, Huang set the goal of recruiting 100 new Major Donors in Taiwan to celebrate Rotary's centennial; the result was the addition of 106 Major Donors in 2005 and 103 in 2006, who contributed more than $2 million to the Foundation's Annual Fund.

Huang wrote about his experiences in business and Rotary in his book, "Finding Solutions, Not Excuses." He received the Civic Service Award of the Federation of Non-Profit Associations and the Outstanding Community Service Award from Taiwan's Ministry of the Interior. In 2001, when the Rotary International Convention was held in San Antonio, Texas, USA, he was named the city's honorary mayor.

Huang is a recipient of the Rotary International Service Above Self Award and Presidential Citation and The Rotary Foundation's Citation for Meritorious Service and Distinguished Service Award.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE - AUGUST 2014

In Rotary, we mark August as Membership and Extension Month. There is a good reason why we remind ourselves of the importance of membership early in every Rotary year: because the job of growing our membership is one that we can never begin too soon. It is also a job that we can never stop working on. In order to keep serving, Rotary always needs to be growing!

We have talked for many years about the importance of the family of Rotary. In this Rotary year, I want to make not just the family of Rotary, but our own Rotary families, a priority in our membership. After 37 years of following me in Rotary, my wife, Corinna, finally became a Rotarian last year. We attended the chartering of a new club in Taiwan together, and she said, "It's time for me to become a Rotarian too!" So she joined that club. And soon, so did a lot of other people. Now that club has 102 members, and it's the second-largest club in Taiwan.

Inviting our spouses into Rotary isn't just about getting our numbers up. It addresses the reality that Rotary still has far more men as members than it does women, and that is something we need to work on. When we bring more women into Rotary, our clubs become more appealing to prospective female members – and become more productive as well.

This year we are going to have something new in Rotary: a membership support team pin. This means that if you invite a new member into Rotary, you get a special pin to wear with your Rotary gearwheel. But we all know that the job of growing membership doesn't end when a new member joins. It ends only when a new member is enjoying being a Rotarian and never wants to leave! And making sure that our clubs are enjoyable places to be is a key part of growing membership.

People come into Rotary for all kinds of reasons, but they stay because Rotary is fun to be a part of. So I want to remind all of you to have fun in your clubs and your districts. Rotary is based on the idea that our service is more effective when we serve together with our friends. So let's enjoy our Rotary service, share it with others, and Light Up Rotary together!

IT’S TIME TO THINK ABOUT UPGRADING THE CAR Rotarian Tom Carroll posted the following on a discussion forum - while it mentions North America, it applies equally here in Australia and relates to why we need to think about changing “what we’ve always done” to attract new members.

For some time I've been thinking about the Rotary membership challenge in the United States and Canada, and what lies at the issue's core. I've come to the conclusion that it isn't that we don't ask guests to come to meetings, or even that members leave because they are not engaged. If this were true, then simply inviting people to meetings and engaging the membership would have solved our problems years ago. I'm constantly being asked, "What are you doing differently"? The answer? We're selling a car people want to buy, not the car we have always sold.

The Rotary "Car" most are offering today has several attributes and traditions. We meet weekly during the business day, usually requiring a 1.5 to 2 hour time commitment. We sing songs, typically written decades ago. We pledge our patriotism and we recite in unison our Four-Way test. We refer to our Rotary Foundations donations as to "My Paul Harris" making no mention of the Rotary Foundation, and we tend to sit with our close friends at the same table each week. I'm not saying these things are wrong or bad; I personally enjoy many of them. But I'd argue we're in the business of attracting and retaining members. If the Car we're selling isn't what the customer are buying, then it's time to take a hard look in the mirror and make some changes. So what are the attributes of this new Car, something I am calling "Rotary 2.0"?

• Fun and Fellowship. A wise and learned Rotarian said to me, "Make your meetings fun! If it were not fun, why would you go? And why would you bring a friend?" Rotary is an opportunity to relax, have fun, meet with your friends and if you're not watching too closely, you just might help your community . . . and the world. Club business should be conducted at board meetings, and general announcements should be made via other media. The Club meeting is the center of what Rotary is. "Where everyone knows your name . . ."

• How do I join? If it's a courtship with a long dating period, potential members will balk and find an easier path. Unless your club has a waiting list, perhaps it's time to take a look at the membership process. One week is a good goal.

• Networking. I realize many strongly disagree with me on this point, but I firmly believe most young professionals are seeking networking organizations; if that's not Rotary, then they will find another opportunity. The reality is that young people value talking with experienced business professionals, not as marketing prospects but as mentors. Sounds like Vocational Service to me. I believe Paul Harris formed the world's first business networking organization, and I think we should embrace rather than shun the concept.

• The Rotary Foundation. It's one of the best things about Rotary, and it is why people want to associate with us. Many clubs don't fully participate and instead, focus on their own foundation's fund raising. Without The Rotary Foundation, I think we're just another service club. That's not bad, it's just not optimal.

I don't think it's reasonable to expect most Rotary Clubs to move to this new model; the resulting change would cause many valuable members to leave. I think the best approach is to identify opportunities for Rotary 2.0 Clubs to be chartered in communities throughout the District, allowing the concept to grow membership while retaining our core.
