Club Bulletin - Issue 20 Monday 16 December 2013 Well here we are at the last meeting for the Club for 2013. This message from myself will be relatively short this week as, like most of us, there is too much to do and not enough hours in the day at this time of the year. Monday night we will hold our last meeting which will be Christmas themed. The night is a family night so bring along the family. Don't forget to let Peter know how many are coming along. Bring along a non-gender specific gift to the value of around $10 for each person who will be coming along with you. We don't want tears because someone missed out on a pressie! We will be raffling off the two hams that were left over from the Lighting of the Christmas tree. First meeting for 2014. The first meeting for 2014 will take place on 13 January. Please let Peter know if you will not be back in Kalgoorlie on that date so your apology is recorded. Australia Day planning is well in hand for the Great Aussie Breakfast on 26 January. A list will be sent around Monday night so we can establish how many members will be available on the day. The board briefly discussed attendance at Community events at the Board meeting this week. As a club we have a great turn out of members to assist at events. However, we are finding that members are putting their names on the list and then, for whatever reason, are unable to attend on the day and not letting anyone know. This can create issues if we don't end up with enough members to help for the activity. Potentially this can be embarrassing. If you have indicated you are able to come along and find on the day you can't make it for any reason please let the person in charge of the event know. We will endeavour to have a club member be the point of contact so you know who to call. That way we can ensure we have enough people to cover what is required for each event. Monday night can you please bring along and items that you have to assist the Belmont BEC to help rebuild the TCF ESVU Ormoc, Philippines www.tcformoc.com “Ormoc City in Leyte Province was among the hardest areas hit by Typhoon Yolanda, along with Dulag, Tolasa, and Tacloban City, leaving over 10,000 who have died in the region. What is Family of Rotary?

Family of Rotary can be many different things.

It can be members ringing a member who was not at the meeting to check if they are okay.

It can be recognising achievements of members for a number of reasons, promotion at work, new job, new business. The list is endless.

It can be the club sending flowers or a small gift to acknowledge an event, birth of a child, significant birthday or anniversary. Flowers are sent if a member loses a parent or partner. It could be the winning of an award.

Club members who are undergoing surgery are often sent flowers to let the member know they are being thought of.

I guess, really, Family of Rotary is acknowledging that we are a family of Rotarians and we care for each other like family members do and as such we acknowledge achievements, significant events, and sad events.

The Family of Rotary is not just about Rotarians and their families it also includes our wider Alumni from Youth Exchange, RYLA, in fact any of the Rotary programs that we invite members of the wider community to participate in. It can also include Members of Rotary from other Clubs.

Family of Rotary is about caring for Rotarians and members of Rotary's extended family (spouses, children, parents).

Family of Rotary is about developing and encouraging members to be involved in the wider service of Rotary.

Portfolio Update:

Youth There’s been a few things happening on the “Youth” front in recent times.

Unfortunately Duné DuPlessis’ application to the National Youth Science Forum was not successful, but it was great to get her application. We wish Duné all the best in 2014 as she moves into Year 12 and completes her formal studies.

On 25 November we attended Goldfields Camp School in the company of thirteen delightful Youth Exchange Students from District 9455. It was a meeting with a difference with the Exchange students hosting the meeting and it was a great night!

The club received one nomination for RYLA has from Rebekah Moyle. Rebekah’s nomination has been approved by the Board. RYLA will be held from 17 to 24 January 2014 at the Serpentine Camping Centre in Jarrahdale.

Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) Program is for 18-28 year olds. We’re sure Rebekah will have great time at RYLA and we’re looking forward to hearing her report in the new year!

RYLA Program at a Glance

Receiving the gift of sight in Nicaragua Walking through the hall of a small clinic in Managua, Nicaragua, I met Stanley.

Stanley had cataracts and had lost all hope of keeping his eyesight. He was slowly slipping into a life of dependency on others. But physicians at the clinic were able to perform a simple procedure on Stanley, and today, he can see.

I visited the clinic in July 2011. People from all over Nicaragua travel to receive free eye-care for medical issues like cataracts, minor eye injuries, and complications from diabetes which are easily treatable in the United States. But because of their poverty and lack of access to medical care, people in Nicaragua lose their eyesight to these treatable issues.

Before Rotary began helping the clinic, it didn’t have the supplies needed to perform necessary surgeries. The physicians made do with what they had and were able to help only a handful of patients a day.

Several years ago, Dr. Jonathan Walker from Fort Wayne, Indiana, was introduced to the clinic. He saw the potential for sustainability and a real willingness on the part of the physicians to help people and teach new physicians. He reached out to Rotarians in District 6540 and over the past few years, he and the organization have raised enough money to provide the clinic with diagnostic equipment, surgical tools, sterilization machines, teaching tools and more. Today, the clinic sees over 600 patients a day.

I heard many stories like Stanley’s about how things used to be and how they had to cope with what they had. One doctor told us this story: a man came in with something in his eye. The doctor’s only choice was to slash it open and ask the patient to lean forward so she could smack him on the back of the head in order to dislodge it. That was the extent of their technology.

Now they can screen, diagnose, treat and perform surgeries at the facility. With the new equipment, they are able to train new doctors and send them into remote villages, reaching people who would have never received the care they need.

My Rotary moment occurred that afternoon in the clinic administrator’s office. I am so proud to be a Rotarian. I am forever changed because of the people of Nicaragua who give so much to each other every day.
