The year that was ...
Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie
This year has been a very busy year with many varied activities taking place. I didn't appreciate just how busy until I started putting together the report for tonight and for this week's Bulletin.
CLUB SERVICE
We have had a number of great Guest Speakers this year that informed and educated club members.
John Wibberley, Regional manager and breakfast Announcer at ABC Radio Goldfields.
Niall Boyle, Editor Kalgoorlie Miner.
Norman Baker, Acting CEO GEDC.
Helen Ducey, Engagement and Transition Manager, Goldfields Education Region.
Graham Thomson, Diggers and Dealers.
Chelsea Gillam, GSE Team member to Brazil.
Roger McDonald, Champion Life Coaching Australia.
Kim O'Reilly, CEO KBULG.
The Rotary Club of Cunderdin again this year coordinated sales of Christmas Cakes and Puddings. Club members purchased some for business gifts and for personal use. Members also ordered additional cakes and puddings and together with the club made a significant donation of cakes and puddings to Goldfields Foodbank.
A group of members and partners attended a night at the Goldfields Repertory Club Christmas Show. Gloria and Stephen were stars on the night and were brave enough to go on stage.
Within the club some fundraising for Club activities was done through Melbourne and Kalgoorlie Cup Sweeps and our own 'Lotto'.
VOCATIONAL
Some very interesting Vocational visits were made throughout the year.
The Goldfields Camp School in conjunction with the visit of the District 9455 Youth Exchange Students.
The Kalgoorlie Boulder Racecourse Museum. A venue I personally had never visited nor even thought about visiting. What a fascinating Museum.
We visited and toured the new St John Ambulance facility
Then in June Officer in Charge of the Kalgoorlie Police Station (and member) Danny Vincent have a a guided tour of the Kalgoorlie Police Station.
Thank you to Vocational Director Lloyd Morley.

Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie
Each year the three Rotary Clubs band together to cook the Great Aussie Breakfast on Australia Day. This means that we need to source Bain Maries each year. For a number of years we had discussed, at debriefings, applying to Council for funding to purchase Bain Maires. This year I noticed a promotion for Funding from FAHCSIA.
The Board agreed we should apply on half of the three clubs.
Subsequently, an application was submitted and was successful for 4 Bain Maries. Between ordering and despatch of the order the four three tray Bain Maries the three tray Bain maries were out of stock so we were offered 4 tray Bain Maries for the same price. I hesitated for a nano second before accepting the offer. The Bain Maries were used for Australia Day this year and were hired by the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder for the Multicultural Festival. The Bain maries are stored in the Club's Sea Container and are available for hire.
Talking of Australia Day the three Clubs have been sourcing the foodstuffs and relevant other items for Australia Day for over 10 years now. Since we started the partnership with the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder we have been getting a donation of $1500 from Council and getting gold coin donations for breakfasts. This year I approached the City and from next year the Clubs will be given $2000 under the MOU with Council. This will be reviewed every three years.
Whilst at lunch at Rydges one day Edward came over and we discussed Money Spinners. The conversation went from there to Edward researching Money Spinners online. A huge thank you to members and their businesses for supporting the purchase of the Money Spinner. Originally the Money Spinner was in the foyer of Rydges, however the noise was going to guarantee either nervous breakdowns or resignations of staff. SO Edward held discussions with the owner of McDonalds who agreed the Money Spinner could be placed in the Brookman Street store. This has generated a steady income stream throughout the year.
I am sure there is more, but I just can't recall them at the moment.
Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie
Thank you to Community Service Directors Peter Sweeney and more recently Gloria Moyle
YOUTH
Pila Molinar was our Youth Exchange student at the start of the year. Her arrival was delayed due to visa issues. Pilar and her family opted to terminate her exchange early for a number of reasons. A shame as Pilar didn't then get the opportunity to experience Christmas in Australia, nor Australia Day.
The Club sponsored Rebekah Moyle to attend RYLA in January. Rebekah came and spoke to the Club on her return to Kalgoorlie to tell us about her experience.
For the second year the D9455 Youth Exchange students visited Kalgoorlie-Boulder as part of their South West Tour. They stayed at the Camp School and members of the Club
went along to have dinner with them. Boulder and Hannans were invited to come along as well.
Thank you to Youth Director Edward Brennan
INTERNATIONAL
A joint meeting was held at Rydges to raise some funds for the World's Greatest meal for a cure for Polio. Apart from raising money for a great cause it was an opportunity for all the clubs to get together socially.
Michael Young and Esther attended Rotary Convention in Lisbon. On their return they gave an overview of Rotary Convention in Lisbon.
In March it was the turn of the Kalgoorlie Club to host the GSE from Denmark from 24-29 March. What a delightful group of young people. Thank you to Anne for all her work in putting the Social program together for them. By all accounts the team members all enjoyed their Vocational Days. Again the Clubs were all invited to the Joint meeting to meet the team members.
All the Club in Kalgoorlie-boulder have actively supported Interplast over the years. In fact, the monies raised over a number of years and banked in the joint account and enabled the clubs to fund and Interplast team in 2013. This year a team of motor bike riders rode through South East Asia visiting Interplast teams and filming their work. They arrived back in Australia through Perth and stopped overnight in Kalgoorlie. The night they arrived in Kalgoorlie-Boulder was very busy as the GSE Team was here as well. The Miles for Smiles team joined us for a fish and chip night. All clubs were invited to join us. On behalf of the three clubs I presented the team with a cheque for $1500 for Interplast.
A few short weeks later the Psychs on Bikes team arrived in
Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie
town. This was rushed and we were not able to plan as well as we would have liked. I was away so thank you to Cherie for representing the Club. It was, by all accounts a very cold night, but everyone attending braved the cold in the alfresco area at Rydges to hear from the speakers. Special mention to the members of Mates 4 Mates Goldfields who attended on the night and then rode to Widgiemooltha with the team. All clubs were invited to join us on the night. Hopefully ,next year we will be able to arrange a bigger and better event to raise awareness of Mental health issues.
The Club also funded two Shelterboxes throughout the year.
The Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie together with a number of other clubs throughout the District assisted to fund The Friends Cafe in Ethiopia through a Rotary Global Grant Project.
Thank you to International Director Anne Skinner
MEMBERSHIP
It is very pleasing to note that the Club has inducted 6 new members this year and accepted the transfer of another member. A great effort by Club members.
Georgia Underwood Sponsored by Lloyd Morley
Lin MacQueen-Henderson sponsored by Cherie Wallace
Gloria Moyle sponsored by Sue Morley
Stephen Harper Sponsored by Lloyd Morley
Danny Vincent sponsored by Esther Roadnight
Charmanie Maisey sponsored by Ken Maisey
Ken Maisey transferred from Rotary Club of Mudgee
A fantastic effort that has been recognised by RI PP Ron D Burton with a Certificate in Recognition of Small Club Membership Growth for increasing our Club membership to 15 or more in 2013-14.
Members who have left the club are:
Michael Young who found juggling the pressures of work were getting too much. The Board decided to offer Michael an Honorary membership so he maintains his connection with the club.
Lee van Rensburg who moved to Perth with her family for her husbands work.
Edward Brennan who was transferred to Gladstone in Queensland, in May, as General Manager of the Rydges Property in that City. Edward has since transferred to the Rotary Club of Gladstone.
Lloyd Morley left us in June and will ultimately end up in Kununurra, and hopefully join the Rotary Club of Kununurra.
So even though we lost 4 members to the Club one has stayed with Rotary and joined another Rotary Club. Another is going to join Rotary when they settle in their new home. So they are not lost to Rotary altogether. As an honorary member Michael maintains his strong link with Rotary.
Two Information nights were held in August and March. These nights enabled Club members to invite community members who were interested in Rotary to come to a meeting to find out more about what the Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie does and the wider world of Rotary International.
Thank you to Membership Director Cherie Wallace.

FOUNDATION
Foundation money boxes were made available for all club members for their loose change or to put on the counter in their place of work
At the beginning of the year I suggested to the Board that we put to the club that all members consider becoming a Centurion. All members were enthusiastic. Each member paid an additional $2 per week when they attended meetings that was credited to their name for Centurion. At the end of May applications for 9 members have been sent to District for members to become Centurions.
There are many other jobs within the Club that members assist with throughout the year and in closing I would like to thank all members for their dedication and work throughout the year. Without your input we couldn't have had the successful year that we have had this year. Members have acted as Sergeant, Attendance Officer, assisted by setting up for the meeting and packing away afterwards. Thank you.
Our intrepid Bulletin Editor, Cherie. What can i say an amazing job putting the Bulletin together each week. Even with technology issues Cherie managed to get the bulletin out to keep us all informed. Thank you Cherie.
My final thanks are to the staff at the Tower Hotel. Aaron for looking after us each week thank you. Margaret each time I met with you to talk about anything we were planning you could not help enough. Thank you all.
