SOTOGRANDE.- Valiente cabal-ga hacia la Triple Corona en el 43 Torneo Internacional Land Rover de Polo en Sotogrande. El equipo del argentino Adolfo Cambiaso, el mejor jugador del mundo, ya ha levantado las Co-pas de Bronce y Plata en San-ta María Polo Club y es el con-junto a batir en la Copa de Oro Bulgari. La trayectoria del equi-po estadounidense, patroneado por Bob Jornayvaz, es especta-cular y busca hacer historia en su primera temporada en So-togrande. Ellerston, Ayala Polo Team y Dos Lunas Espirito San-to son sus principales rivales para impedírselo.

Valiente ha finalizado y al-zado invicto los dos primeros trofeos. En la Copa de Bronce Isolas se impuso en la final por 11 a 7 a Ayala Polo Team. Mien-tras, en la Copa de Plata Silex, se deshizo con relativa comodi-dad de Ellerston, que defendía título, por 16 a 10 en las semifi-nales. En el partido decisivo se batió con el sorprendente Dos Lunas Espirito Santo, al que fi-nalmente tumbó por 13 a 10.

Cambiaso cuenta con dos escuderos de lujo -Santi Torres y Santi Laborde- para imponer su juego en las canchas de Los Pinos. El jugador argentino re-conoció su labor tras la victoria en la Copa de Plata contra Dos Lunas. “Estoy muy contento. El equipo Dos Lunas ha sido durí-

simo de vencer. Santi Laborde, atrás, ataja todo lo que le man-dan. Santi Torres, cuando está inspirado, es un jugador increí-ble. Sólo tiene 20 años y es de los jugadores con más futuro del polo no sólo americano sino mundial. Tengo equipo, orga-nización y caballos para conti-nuar. Me gustaría intentar, con todo lo que tengo, seguir ga-nando aquí en Sotogrande”, ma-nifestó Cambiaso.

El manager de Valiente, Ro-berto Zedda, por su parte, no ocultó su satisfacción por los resultados del equipo y apun-tó al objetivo de la Copa de Oro como último paso para la Tri-ple Corona en Sotogrande. “No nos podemos quejar. Estamos jugando espectacular en Soto-grande. La idea es llevarnos la Triple Corona, ya tenemos dos de las copas”, indicó Zedda.

Valiente mantiene la senda del triunfo en la Copa de Oro Bulgari tras vencer en el pri-mer partido por 13 a 9 a Royal Salute. El pasado jueves tuvo una nueva prueba de fuego con-tra uno de los aspirantes, Ayala Polo Team, al que volvió a ga-nar por 11 a 10. El último parti-do antes de las semifinales será frente a HB dentro de la zona AB del torneo.

Cambiaso quiere seguir ha-ciendo historia en el polo des-pués de completar un 2013 in-olvidable en su país, cuna de este deporte. El año pasado le-vantó por primera vez la Tri-ple Corona en Argentina con su equipo La Dolfina tras ganar los Abiertos de Tortugas, Hur-lingham y Palermo. En esta úl-tima plaza, considerada como la catedral del polo, alzó el que era su décimo título personal. El equipo que conquistó la final de Palermo estaba formado por Cambiaso, David Stirling, Pablo Mac Donough y Sebastián Mer-los. Juan Martín Nero, también integrante de La Dolfina en la temporada argentina del año pasado, no pudo disputar este encuentro por lesión.

Cambiaso quiere seguir ba-tiendo récords y no lo va a tener fácil en la recta final de este tor-neo, considerado como el mejor de la historia de Sotogrande.

Principales rivalesAyala Polo Team es otro de

los equipos a tener en cuenta en esta Copa de Oro. El conjun-to hispano-filipino, del patrón Íñigo Zobel, llega sin embargo al trofeo decisivo con un mal sabor de boca después de su in-esperada derrota en las semifi-nales de la Copa de Plata ante Dos Lunas por 16 a 15.

El equipo comandado por el uruguayo David Pelón Stirling cuenta con el favor del público en Santa María Polo Club, que

tiene muy en cuenta que su pa-dre fue el que puso a Sotogran-de y España en el mapa mun-dial del deporte del polo.

Ayala Polo Team comen-zó bien el Torneo Internacional Land Rover al alcanzar la final de la Copa de Bronce, en la que cayó ante Valiente. Ahora, tras el tropiezo ante Dos Lunas en la de Plata, intenta reponerse en la Copa Bulgari en la que ha tenido un buen estreno. Los de Stirling vencieron con claridad al siempre difícil King Power -que venía de ganar la Copa Subsidiaria Tío Pepe contra Las Monjitas- en el partido inaugu-ral. Ahora, tras el nuevo cho-que frente a Valiente, Ayala se tendrá que enfrentar a Lechu-zas Caracas en busca de uno de los puestos de semifinales de la Copa de Oro en la zona AB.

Pero si hay un equipo dis-puesto a poner fin al reinado de Valiente en Sotogrande ése es Ellerston. El equipo austra-liano llegaba este año a Santa María con la responsabilidad de defender los títulos de las Copas de Oro y Plata logrados en 2013. Pieres. La trayectoria de Ellers-ton en este torneo es engañosa, ya que no está teniendo todo el protagonismo que se mere-ce pese a haber perdido solo un partido de momento. El equipo australiano no disputó la Copa de Bronce y, en la de Plata, llegó con facilidad a semifinales. Sin embargo, en este partido sufrió una clara derrota contra Valien-te, lo que le ha dejado en un se-gundo plano. Una situación que están dispuestos a revertir.

El conjunto de los hermanos Pieres anda con paso firme en

la Copa de Oro Bulgari y lidera la zona CD con vistas a las se-mifinales. En el primer encuen-tro se deshizo con facilidad de La Indiana por 16-10; mientras que este pasado miércoles hizo lo propio en su segundo en-cuentro con Dos Lunas -finalis-ta de la Copa de Plata- por 16 a 11. El último encuentro lo juga-rá contra Las Monjitas antes de plantarse en las semifinales de alto handicap para defender la Copa de Oro.

La otra plaza para las semi-finales de la zona CD está muy

disputada. A priori, Dos Lunas Espirito Santo tiene opciones de alcanzarla pero el equipo es-pañol está siendo una incógnita en este torneo.

Dos Lunas empezó discreto la Copa de Bronce y fue apea-

do antes de las semifinales por Las Monjitas. El equipo forma-do por Luis Domecq, Pascual Sainz de Vicuña, Martín Itu-rraspe y Agustín García Gros-si se recompuso en la Copa de Plata y se plantó en semifina-les, donde protagonizó la gran sorpresa de lo que se lleva de torneo. Enfrente tenía a Ayala, que en los primeros chukkers logró una holgada ventaja. Sin embargo, Dos Lunas aprovechó un bajón de su rival y completó una impresionante remontada para vencer finalmente 16-15.

Una vez en la final, plantó cara a Valiente en todo el encuentro.

Ahora, en la Copa de Oro, Dos Lunas suma una victoria y una derrota. En otra gran re-montada tumbó a RH por 12-11 en el primer encuentro, mien-tras que cayó en el segundo con claridad contra Ellerston.

Dos Lunas se jugará la pla-za de semifinales de la zona CD contra Halcyon Gallery en el tercer encuentro. Ambos suman los mismos puntos, al igual que RH y La Indiana, también con opciones de pasar de fase.

SOTOGRANDE.- Valiente ri-des into the Triple Crown in the 43rd Land Rover Interna-tional Polo Tournament in So-togrande. The team of Argenti-ne Adolfo Cambiaso, the best player in the world, has alrea-dy taken the Bronze and Silver Cups at the Santa Maria Polo Club and is the team to beat in the Bulgari Gold Cup. The American team’s past record, led by Bob Jornayvaz, is spec-tacular and aims to make his-tory in their first season in So-togrande. Ellerston, Ayala Polo Team and Dos Lunas Espirito Santo are their main rivals to stop them.

Valiente finished undefea-ted and lifted the first two tro-phies. In the Bronze Isolas Cup Valiente defeated Ayala Polo team in the final by 11-7. Meanwhile, in the Silex Silver Cup, they shattered Ellerston’s attempts to defend their title with relative ease by 16-10 in the semi-finals. In the decisi-ve match, they beat the surpri-sing Dos Lunas Espirito Santo team, and went on to win by 13-10.

Laborde– to dictate play on the Los Pinos field. The Argentine player praised their work after the victory in the Silver Cup against Dos Lunas. “I am very happy. The Dos Lunas team has been very tough to beat. Santi Laborde, back, attacks everything sent to him. San-ti Torres, when inspired, is an incredible player. He is only 20 years old is not just the most promising player for American but also world polo. I have the team, the organisation and the horses to continue on. I would like to try, with everything. I have, to continue wining here in Sotogrande”, stated Cam-biaso.

Valiente’s manager, Rober-to Zedda, meanwhile, could ba-rely contain his delight for the team’s results and is now ai-ming for the Gold Cup as the last final step towards the Tri-ple Crown in Sotogrande. “We can’t complain. We are playing spectacularly in Sotogrande. The objective is to lift the Tri-ple Crown; we already have

Cambiaso wants to conti-nue making history in polo af-ter finishing an unforgettable 2013 in his country, the birth-place of this sport. Last year, he lifted the Triple Crown for the first time in Argentina with

his team La Dolfina after win-ning the Tortugas, Hurlingham and Palermo Open Champions-hips. The latter considered the ‘Cathedral of Polo’ and where he took his tenth personal ti-tle. The winning team in the Palermo final was formed of Cambiaso, David Stirling, Pa-blo Mac Donough and Sebas-

tián Merlos. Juan Martín Nero, also a member of La Dolfina in last year’s Argentine sea-son, could not take part in this game due to injury.

Cambiaso wants to conti-nue breaking records, but it will not be an easy task in the final stretch of this tourna-ment, considered the best in the history of Sotogrande.

Main rivalsAyala Polo Team is ano-

ther team to consider in this Gold Cup. The hispanio-fili-pino team, from patron Íñi-go Zobel, arrives at the decisi-ve trophy with a sour taste in their mouth after there unex-pected defeat in the semi-fi-nals of the Silver Cup against Dos Lunas by 16-15.

The team lead by the Uru-guayan David Pelón Stirling is hugely popular at the Santa Maria Polo Club, thanks to his father who put Sotogrande and Spain on the world polo spor-ting map.

Ayala Polo Team began the Land Rover International Tour-nament well by reaching the fi-nal in the Bronze Cup, in whi-ch they lost against Valiente. Now, after a stumble against Dos Lunas in the Silver Cup, they are attempting to recover in the Bulgari Cup in which they’ve got off to a great start. The Stirling team resoundin-gly beat the always-difficult King Power, who had just won the Subsidiary Tío Pepe Cup against Las Monjitas, in the opening match. Now, after the shock against Valiente, Ayala will face Lechuza Caracas for one of the semi-final places in the Gold Cup in the AB zone.

But if there is a team willing to put an end to Valiente’s reign in Sotogrande is Ellerston. The Australian team arrived in San-ta Maria this year with the aim of defending their 2013 Gold and Silver Titles. Ellerston is the only team of the Land Ro-ver Tournament that has in its ranks two players with handi-cap 10, the brothers Facundo and Gonzalo Pieres. Ellerston’s track record in this tournament is misleading, as its not recei-ving all the attention the team deserves despite having only lost one match so far. The Aus-tralian team did not dispute the Bronze Cup, and in the Sil-ver Cup, reached the semi-fi-nals with ease. However, in the match they suffered a clear de-feat against Valiente, which left

them in the background. A si-tuation there are ready to re-verse.

The team of the Pieres bro-thers are steadily progressing in the Bulgari Gold Cup and leading the CD zone with a view toward the semi-finals. In the first match they easi-ly got rid of La Indiana by 16-10; whilst last Wednesday they did the same thing in their se-cond match against Dos Lunas -finalist of the Silver Cup- by 16-11. Their last match will

be played against Las Monjitas before heading into the high handicap semi-finals to defend the Gold Cup.

The other spot in the Semi-finals of the CD zone is up for grabs. Dos Lunas Espirito Santo is in for a chance but the Spanish team are relatively unknown in this tournament.

Dos Lunas started the Bronze Cup inconspicuously and was eliminated before the semi-finals by Las Monjitas. The team formed of Luis Do-

mecq, Pascual Sainz de Vicuña, Martín Iturraspe and Agustín García Grossi pulled themsel-ves through in the Silver Cup and made it to the semi-fi-nals, where the biggest sur-prise in the tournament took place. In front was Ayala, and in the first chukker achie-ved a comfortable advantage. However, Dos Lunas suffered a setback against their rival but put on a stunning comeback to eventually win 16-15. Once in the final, they stood up to Va-

liente throughout the match.Now in the Gold Cup, Dos

Lunas has both a win and a loss. In another comeback, they lost to RH by 12-11 in the first match, whilst the second they lost against Ellerston.

Dos Lunas will fight for the semi-final of the CD zone against Halcyon Gallery in the third match. Both have the same points, just like RH and La Indiana who are also focus-sing on progressing to the next round.

l. v. / SOTOGRANDE.- The medium handicap category is the most open category in the Land Ro-ver International Polo Tourna-ment, and there’s no clear fa-vourite to take the Gold Trophy. As no one has been able to play in another final in the two pre-vious trophies in Sotogrande, up to six teams have chances of taking the title. In the Bronze Cup, Leones and FCT reached the final, and clinched the title, the first of which by 12-9. The Peruvian team, however, did not play in another final in the Silver Cup, in which they faced Equus and Seven Sevens, with a victory for the Germans against the Rus-sians by a narrow 10-9.

In the absence of a third day in the Gold Cup, five tea-

ms are undefeated with two victories in the bag and they are now looking towards the semi-finals. Equus, Seven Se-vens, Mahra Esperanza Silex and FCT are competing for the four places.

Leones, who arrive with a win and a loss, also have chan-ces of winning. They’ll need to

beat Los Dragones in the final match and wait for the results of the other matches.

Just like Valiente in the top category, so far in the low cate-gory there is also a clear domi-nating figure. Hunstman, who has already taken the Bronze and Silver Cups, is now aiming for the Triple Crown.

The formation, made up of Aristide Faggionato, Dillon Ba-con, Felipe Gómez and Iván Maldonado, won the the Bron-ze final against Silex by 7-6, and another victory in the Sil-ver Cup against Serdeñola by 12-9.

These three formations have started well in the Bulga-

ri Gold Cup with further vic-tories, and are aiming now for the semi-finals. The fourth pla-ce of this round will be played between the teams Kazak Sha-kib, Bayswater and Valdeparras Marqués de Torneros. Goal di-fference may prove to be deci-sive in deciding the semi-final clashes.

It is the most open category this year in Santa Maria. Huntsman tipped as clear

SOTOGRANDE.- La catego-ría de mediano handicap es la que está más abierta dentro del Torneo Land Rover, ya que no cuenta con un claro favori-to para adjudicarse la Copa de Oro. Hasta seis equipos cuen-tan con opciones, después de que ninguno haya podido repe-tir final en los dos trofeos ante-riores en Sotogrande.

En la Copa de Bronce llega-ron a la final Leones y FCT, lle-vándose el título el primero de ellos por 12 a 9. El equipo pe-

ruano, sin embargo, no pudo re-petir final en la Copa de Plata, en la que se enfrentaron Equus y Seven Sevens, con triunfo de los alemanes frente a los rusos por un ajustado 10 a 9.

A falta de la tercera jornada de la Copa de Oro, cinco equi-pos están invictos con dos vic-torias en su casillero y apun-tan a las semifinales. Se trata

de Equus, Seven Sevens, Ma-hra Esperanza, Silex y FCT; que compiten por las cuatro plazas. Leones, que llega con una victo-ria y una derrota, también tie-ne opciones. Tendrá que vencer en el último partido a Dragones y esperar los resultados de los otros encuentros.

Al igual que con Valiente en la máxima categoría, en el bajo

handicap también hay un domi-nador absoluto hasta la fecha. Se trata de Huntsman, que ya ha alzado las Copas de Bronce y Plata y busca la Triple Corona. La formación que integran Aris-tide Faggionato, Dillon Bacon, Felipe Gómez e Iván Maldonado ganó la final de Bronce ante Si-lex por 7 a 6; y repitió victoria en la de Plata contra Serdeñola

por 12 a 9. Estas tres formacio-nes han empezado bien la Copa de Oro con victorias y apuntan a las semifinales. La cuarta pla-za de esta ronda se la jugarán entre Kazak Shakib, Bayswater y Valdeparras Marqués de Tor-neros. La diferencia de goles puede ser decisiva para decidir los enfrentamientos de las se-mifinales.

L a Final de la Copa de Plata Si-lex del 43 Torneo Internacional Land Rover de Polo, uno de los premios más importantes del

circuito del polo mundial, atrajo a un numeroso público a las instalaciones del Santa María Polo Club en Sotogran-de. Como ya se comprobó en los días anteriores, la llegada de la alta com-petición supone también la visita a las canchas y zonas aledañas de algunos de los rostros más conocidos de la so-ciedad y la prensa rosa españolas.

Fue el caso de Cayetano Martínez de Irujo, que aprovechó el partido para acercarse al restaurante Palenque, de Sodexo Prestige, que ofrece entre sus delicias el aceite y productos Casa de Alba. Todo un lujo para los paladares más exigentes que disfrutan cada noche del servicio y la cocina de Palenque.

El Conde de Salvatierra, que lleva de manera personal la gestión y desarrollo de los productos Casa de Alba, no dudó en atender a los medios y detallar los artículos de la marca que ya están en el mercado; y de aquellos otros que po-drán disfrutare en el futuro.

Contento y relajado, comentó que ha estado visitando a su madre en San Se-bastián durante estas vacaciones; y que tiene en mente viajar a Berlín, donde su novia, la nadadora Melani Costa, está compitiendo por las medallas en los Eu-ropeos de Natación.

El ex marido de la Infanta Elena no solo se acercó a ver el gran partido de polo que se estaba disputando, sino que aprovechó para pasear por las instala-ciones mientras sus hijos disfrutaban con sus primos y amigos.

La gran final de la Copa de Plata Si-lex, que enfrentó al invicto equipo es-tadounidense Valiente, liderado por el número uno del polo, Adolfo Cambia-so, contra los españoles de Dos Lunas, Pascual Sainz de Vicuña y Luis Dome-cq, fue presenciada por personalidades del mundo social y de empresa como Patrick Hermes, Inés Domecq, Jose Ma-nuel Entrecanales, Juan March o Astrid Muñoz entre el numerosísimo público que acudió a las canchas del Santa Ma-ría Polo Club.

En el After Polo, el protagonismo fue para Bimba y Charlie, pareja profesio-nal y sentimental, que puso el ritmo a una de las noches más movidas del Tor-neo Internacional Land Rover.

Bimba Bosé y su actual pareja, Char-lie transmitieron su energía a todos lo que se acercaron a conocerlos y sa-ludarlos. La modelo y diseñadora se mostró muy amable en todo momen-to, dejándose fotografiar con los que allí habían acudido atraídos por su DJ Show. Bimba Bosé manifestó que se siente llena de energía para sacar ade-

lante su proyecto textil en compañía de su pareja y que, a pesar del delicado momento de salud que atraviesa, se en-cuentra sobrada de fuerzas para seguir adelante.

Blanco y azul eran los colores re-comendados para asistir a esta fies-ta privada, que contó con un divertido photocall con detalles para disfrazar-se. Durante la Grey Goose White Party, el artista Víctor Jerez pintó un lienzo

con el rostro de Bimba y detalles de la marca de vodka que ejercía de gran an-fitriona.

El artista algecireño, que lleva va-rios veranos amenizando las noches del Santa María pintando en directo y ante el público, contó que regaló el retrato a Bimba Bosé. “Me comentó que le en-cantaba, que era uno de los mejores re-tratos que le habían hecho en su vida, y quise regalárselo”, señaló el pintor.

Víctor Jerez manifestó estar muy sa-tisfecho con el trabajo que está reali-zando en Sotogrande. “Me gusta mucho interactuar con el público, que se acer-que y me pregunte. A alguna gente le parece increíble que en un par de horas o tres pueda terminar un cuadro”, acla-ró el artista, quien suele utilizar como motivo para la pintura los colores de la fiesta, o la presencia de algún protago-nista, como ocurrió con Bimba Bosé.

La aceptación por parte de Bimba Bosé del cuadro, y el hecho de que la modelo y dj lo haya comunicado en sus redes sociales ha supuesto una gran re-percusión para el trabajo de Víctor Je-rez. “Me ha traído una gran publicidad, y esto muy ilusionado con todo lo que me está pasando, la verdad”, declaró el artista, quien asegura que está reci-biendo muchos encargos gracias a su presencia en las fiestas del After Polo.

El broche al fin de semana lo puso el grupo jerezano A Dos Velas, que animó la noche del domingo en Grey Goose Af-ter Polo Sotogrande con una entrada de precio benéfico para el Centro de Hipo-terapia de Santa María Polo Club.

La agrupación jerezana formada por Cuco y Manolo Hernández Polo y José Romero Vázquez, deleitó al público con sus rumbas y baladas de amor con rit-mos flamencos. El trío atesora dos dis-

cos de oro y uno de platino y cuenta con tres álbumes en el mercado.

La agenda social de estos días la ha completado la inauguración de una ex-posición fotográfica de Astrid Muñoz. La modelo presenta dos colecciones en Sotogrande. La primera de ellas es ‘Gau-chos’, que recoge una serie de retratos de esta figura icónica del campo argen-tino, sobre los que la autora lleva traba-jando desde 2008, una estampa por la

que parece no haber pasado el tiempo y que ella ha resumido en un selección de 12 imágenes. Cada una de ellas recoge un momento clave de la vida de los gau-chos argentinos y su relación con los caballos y el medio natural. Desde una perspectiva más artística, la segunda de las colecciones acerca al espectador a la majestuosidad natural de la isla de Skye (Escocia), cuyas imágenes pertenecen a una exposición que ya hizo en París.

The Final of the Silex Silver Cup of the 43rd Land Rover Inter-national Polo Tournament, one of the most important awards

of the world polo circuit, attracted a large audience in the grounds of the Santa María Polo Club in Sotogrande. As seen in previous days, the arrival of the top-level competition also included a visit to the grounds and surrounding areas from the most well known faces of Spanish society and gossip magazi-nes. Cayetano Martinez de Irujo visi-ted the Palenque Restaurant, of Sodexo Prestige, which offers amongst its de-licacies, Casa de Alba Oil and Produce. Everything a luxury for the most discer-ning of palates that every night savour the Palenque service and cuisine. The Conde of Salvatierra, who personally leads the management and development of the Casa de Alba produce, did not he-sitate to address the media and elabo-rate on the brand’s produce currently available in the market, and those that may be enjoyed in the future.

Happy and relaxed, he stated that he had been visiting his mother in San Se-bastian during the holiday period, and that he wished to travel to Berlin where his girlfriend, the swimmer Melani Cos-ta, is competing for medals in the Euro-pean Swimming Championships.

Amongst the 6000 people in atten-dance, other visitors also attended, like Jaime de Marichalar with his children, Victoria and Felipe. The former hus-band of the Infanta Elena not only came to see the great polo match that was bring played, but also took the opportu-nity to walk among the grounds whilst his children played with their family and friends.

The Grand Final of the Silex Silver Cup, which pitted the undefeated Ame-rican Valiente team, led by Polo Number 1, Adolfo Cambiaso against Spaniards Dos Lunas, Pascual Sainz de Vicuña and Luis Domecq was also attended by a number of social and business persona-lities like Patrick Hermes, Inés Domecq, Jose Manuel Entrecanales, Juan Mar-ch and Astrid Muñoz amongst the large attending audience on the fields of the Santa María Polo Club.

For the After Polo entertainment, the main role went to Bimba and Charlie, a business and personal partnership, who set the pace for one of the most anima-ted nights of the Land Rover Internatio-nal Tournament.

Bimba Bosé and her boyfriend Char-lie, channelled their energy to all those who came to meet and greet them. The model and designer was very friendly throughout, allowing photos to be taken with those who had come for their DJ Show. Bimba Bosé said that she was excited about taking her textile project forward with her boyfriend and that, despite her delicate state of health, she was determined to move forwards.

White and Blue were the suggested

colours for the private party that featu-red an entertaining photo call with fan-cy-dress clothing on offer. During the Grey Goose White Party, the artist Vic-tor Jerez painted a canvas with Bimba’s face and aspects of the vodka brand that acted as a great host.

The algecireño artist, who has spent many summers livening up the nights of the Santa María Club by painting live and before an audience, explained and

gave a portrait to Bimba Bosé. “She told me that she loved it, that it was one of the best portraits that had been made for her in her life, and I wanted to give it to her” stated the painter.

Victor Jerez said he was very plea-sed with the work he was doing in So-togrande. “I love interacting with mem-bers of the public who come up and ask. Some people think it is amazing that in a couple of hours a painting can be

made”, said the artist, who often uses party colours or the presence of a ce-lebrity, like Bimba Bosé, as inspiration for his paintings.

with their rumbas and flamenco rhythm love ballads. The trio have amassed two gold records and one platinum, and

currently have three albums on sale.The social programme of these days

rounded off the inauguration of a pho-tographic exposition from Astrid Mu-ñoz. The model has two collections in Sotogrande. The first is “Gauchos’’, which includes a series of portraits of the iconic gaucho figure from the Ar-gentine countryside, which the artist has been working on since 2008, an image for which time has not passed

by and that has been epitomised in a selection of 12 images. Each one in-cludes a key moment in the life of the argentine gauchos and their relations-hips with horses and the natural envi-ronment. From a more artistic pers-pective, the second of the collections takes viewers to the natural majesty of the Isle of Skye (Scotland), whose ima-ges belong to an exhibition she did in Paris.

SOTOGRANDE.- La embar-cación ‘Estepona.com’ levan-tó el pasado fin de semana la XV Copa Sotogrande Rives de vela, puntuable para el Cam-peonato de Andalucía de Cru-ceros ORC. La prueba, organi-zada por el Real Club Marítimo de Sotogrande (RCMS), cosechó un rotundo éxito y situó a la urbanización sanroqueña como referente del deporte náutico a nivel regional.

La XV Copa Rives contó con la participación de 32 barcos, 12 de ellos ORC y el resto mo-notipos. La regata no arrancó con buen pie el pasado viernes 15 de agosto ya que la falta de viento y la densa niebla obligó

a suspender las pruebas pre-vistas. El sábado el levante so-pló con algo más de fuerza y los participantes pudieron zar-par y completar algunas man-gas. El plato fuerte llegó en la última jornada, la del domin-go 17, que se presentó con un viento bastante aceptable para efectuar las últimas pruebas de las distintas clases. En total se pudieron dar tres mangas para monotipos J80 y Tom28Max y para los cruceros ORC se dio la tradicional regata costera has-ta Gibraltar.

Andalucía de esta clase. En la general, el ganador fue el ‘Es-tepona.com’ del armador Es-tepona Web, S.L. y patroneado por Javier Rodríguez del Club de Regatas Costa del Sol. En segundo lugar quedó clasifica-do el barco ‘Amor Fati’ del ar-mador Rafael Ruiz Ramírez del C.M. Benalmádena y patrone-ado por él mismo; y en tercera posición el barco ‘Titicaca’ del armador y patrón Graham Cox del RCMS. El viento fue cons-tante durante el recorrido cos-tero y permitió que la prueba se desarrollara en un tiempo óptimo.

Respecto a los monotipos J80, el barco ‘Herbalife’ de los armadores Juan Luis Páez y Pe-pequin Orbaneja, del Real Club

Marítimo Sotogrande, consi-guió alzarse con la XV Copa So-togrande Rives, ya que realizó una regata formidable llegan-do a ganar en tres de las cuatro pruebas que se disputaron du-rante toda la regata. En segun-do lugar quedó el barco ‘Oxital’ de los armadores Carlos Lata-pia y Alejandro Díaz del Real Club Marítimo Santander; y en tercer lugar finalizó el barco ‘Intention’ del armador Bevelle Náutica del C.N. Bevelle.

En la clase Tom28Max el ‘Brabante’, de los armado-res Rafael Benjumea y Javier García Carranza, fue el gana-dor de esta edición de la re-gata en Sotogrande. En segun-do lugar acabó la embarcación ‘Pink Floid’ del armador Enri-

que Benjumea y, cerrando el po-dio, la embarcación ‘Trocadero’ del armador Guillermo Olaso.

El domingo por la noche, Trocadero Sotogrande organi-zó un cóctel, donde familiares y amigos pudieron disfrutar de una agradable velada de entre-ga de trofeos para las tres ca-tegorías. Esta regata, que año tras año organiza el RCMS, se ha convertido ya en un clásico dentro de la temporada vera-

niega. Ha sido comentario ge-neralizado la buena organiza-ción y la eficiencia del comité de regatas que ha dirigido este año la consecución de las dis-tintas pruebas.

El responsable de Comuni-cación del RCMS, Javier Molina, explicó a este periódico que la regata este año ha ido “bastante bien”. Molina destacó la ausen-cia de protestas entre los par-ticipantes. “La regata ha sido muy limpia. Llevo quince años con este tipo de pruebas y creo que ha sido la más ordenada. Y ello pese a la austeridad a la que nos hemos visto obligados en esta edición por la crisis”, manifestó Molina, que destacó la excelente labor del oficial de regata Juan Luis Cervera.

El responsable de Comuni-cación del RCMS se congratuló por el buen desarrollo del que era el evento del año para la en-tidad. Ahora, el RCMS se prepa-ra para participar en el mes de septiembre en la Regata Inter-clubs para cruceros que se de-sarrolla en la zona con pruebas en Algeciras, Estepona o Ceuta. Asimismo, también el próximo mes se disputa la Regata en So-litario y a Dos, entre Sotogran-de y Ceuta, para cruceros.

Molina insistió en que el objetivo del RCMS es romper con la estacionalidad con ac-tividades durante todo el año, que tendrán su continuidad en invierno con la Liga de Tom-28Max, una de las flotas pro-pias del RCMS junto a los J80.

SOTOGRANDE.- Last weekend, the vessel ‘Estepona.com’ lifted the XV Sotogrande Rives Sai-ling Cup, scoring points for the ORC Cruiser Andalusia Cham-pionships. The race, organised by the Sotogrande Royal Ma-ritime Club (RCMS), was a re-sounding success and set the San Roque region as a ben-chmark example for nautical sport at regional level.

32 ships participated in the XV Rives Cup, 12 of them ORCs and the rest monotypes. The re-gatta did not get off to a good start last Friday 15th August, as a lack of wind and dense fog forced the organisers to sus-pend the planned races. On Sa-

turday, a strong easterly wind blew in and participants were able to set sale and compete numerous circuits. The undo-ubtable highlight took place on the final day, Sunday 17th, when with a more than accep-table wind, the final races for the various classes took place. In total three circuits took pla-ce for the J80 and Tom28Max monotypes, and the ORC crui-sers competed in the traditio-nal coastal regatta towards Gi-braltar.

The regatta committee led by official Juan Luis Cervera firstly signalled the start for the ORC cruisers, with sco-res at stake for the Andalusia Championship for this class.

On Sunday night, Trocade-ro hosted a cocktail party, whe-re family and friends were able to enjoy a charming eve-ning awards ceremony for the three categories. This regatta, organised year after year by the RCMS, has already become a highlight of the summer sea-son. There has been widespread praise for the organisation and efficiency of the regatta com-mittee who have this year orga-nised the various races.

RCMS Head of Communica-tions, Javier Molina, told this

newspaper that this year’s re-gatta has been “pretty good”. Molina noted the absence of any protests amongst the par-ticipants. “The regatta has been very clean. I have spent fifteen years doing these races and I believe it has been the smoo-thest. This, despite the auste-rity with which we have been faced this year due to the eco-nomic crisis” stated Molina, who also highlighted the exce-

llent work of race official Juan Luis Cervera.

RCMS Head of Communi-cations was pleased with the smoothing running of the events and it was the event of the year for the organisation. The RCMS is now preparing for the Interclubs Cruiser Regatta to take place in the region in September, with races in Alge-ciras, Estepona and Ceuta, and similarly, next month in the Solo and Duo Cruiser Regattas between Sotogrande and Ceuta.

Molina insisted that the aim of the RCMS is to break the seasonal order with activi-ties throughout the year and that will continue into winter with the Tom28Max League, one of its own fleets together with the J80s.

SOTOGRANDE.- Si el Club Naútico Bevelle tuviera sede, que la tendrá en poco tiempo, y la visitáramos, podríamos ver todo el trabajo que se está rea-lizando para la celebración de la Copa de España de J80 Puer-to de Sotogrande. El CN Beve-lle, en colaboración con Puerto Sotogrande, la firma de Servi-cios Náuticos Bevelle Náutica y Varadero Sotogrande, se em-barcan, valga la expresión, en la organización de una compe-tición de vela, esta vez la J80, que tendrá lugar entre los días tres y seis de septiembre en el Puerto de Sotogrande.

Nacho Cifuentes, project manager de Gestión de Varade-ros del Sur, y responsable del club Naútico Bevelle, anda es-tos días liado con la logística y la preparación de un campeo-nato nacional en el que podrían participar entre 25 y 30 bar-cos. Tras la exitosa experiencia de la RC44, el pasado mes de junio, ahora toca afrontar una competición ligada a la vela re-creativa y ligera. “A pesar del poco tiempo que llevamos, con-seguimos la celebración de la RC44 y luego nos aprobaron el proyecto para la organización de la Copa de España de J80 este año, el Campeonato de J80 de España en 2015, y del mun-do en 2016. Estamos muy con-tentos y satisfechos”, comenta Nacho Cifuentes.

La tripulación de un J80 la componen entre cuatro y cinco personas. Su número final de-pende del peso global que su-men y que no debe sobrepasar los 338,60 kilos de peso. Es un barco que mide ocho metros de eslora y 2,49 de manga.

“Esta competición, a dife-rencia de la RC44, es mucho más asequible, puesto que el J80 es un barco en el que par-ticipan tripulaciones amateur, más acostumbradas a una vela de recreo. En el RC44 los presu-puestos son más elevados por-que los equipos y las tripula-ciones son más profesionales. En el campeonato que vamos a celebrar en septiembre, en ape-nas unas semanas, nos vamos a encontrar con grupos de ami-gos que forman un equipo y sa-len a navegar como forma de ocio o entretenimiento”, explica el project manager.

Los interesados en la J80 pueden encontrar toda la infor-mación acerca de la documen-tación y logística de la com-petición en la página web que se ha habilitado para la Copa de España de J80 en el Puerto de Sotogrande. Buena parte de los barcos que participarán en

el Campeonato de España per-tenecen a la flota local: la J80 Puerto Sotogrande, compues-ta actualmente por un total de 12 embarcaciones. Una vez se dispute la competición, la flota amarrada en el puerto depor-tivo volverá al IV Circuito Nh Resorts J80, que se iniciará el próximo mes de octubre.

Este circuito es lo que se co-noce como liga local, que se de-sarrolla durante todo el año, y que en el pasado mes de julio concluyó con Herbalife como ganador, por tercer año con-secutivo, dejando el segundo puesto para el NH Almenara, y el tercero para el PAS Team.

Herbalife es, sin duda, el barco a batir, pues llega a So-togrande habiendo logrado un tercer puesto en el podio de la Copa del Rey, y el primero en de su clase de la XV Copa Ri-ves. “Estamos contentos, y este tercer puesto en una regata -en referencia a la Copa del Rey- donde están prácticamente los mejores patrones y tripulacio-nes del mundo es mejor que bueno. Nuestro objetivo era me-jorar el resultado del año pasa-do y lo hemos conseguid. Bien es verdad que nos ilusionamos con la victoria al tenerla en las mandos durante dos días, pero la vela es así, no solo depen-des de ti y bueno, me quedo con este podio y el empujón que nos

da para las futuras citas”, de-claró el armador del barco, un satisfecho Pepequin Orbaneja tras lograr el tercer puesto.

Logística en tierraEl escenario en tierra estará

situado en la ribera del Marlin, donde está amarrada la flota

local, y donde se ha ubicado la que será la futura sede del Club Naútico Bevelle. La organiza-ción montará una carpa, junto a la oficina de la competición, donde se atenderá a los rega-tistas. Además, en esta misma zona, uno de los bares insta-lados allí será el encargado de

proporcionar a las tripulacio-nes la comida y bebida que ne-cesiten. En los próximos días se espera que empiecen a llegar los barcos procedentes de otros puntos del país, y será entonces cuando el puerto de Sotogrande se llene del ambiente propio de la competición.

El Club Naútico Bevelle vuelve a encargarse de la organización de una competición que tendrá, en

este mismo escenario, la celebración del Campeonato de España en 2015 y del mundo en 2016

SOTOGRANDE.- If the Bevelle Nautical Club had a head offi-ce, which it will soon have, and we visited it, we would be able to see all the work that is be-ing done to organise the J80 Spanish Cup in the Sotogrande Port. The Bevelle Nautical Club, in collaboration with Puerto So-togrande, the nautical services firm Bevelle Náutica and Vara-dero Sotogrande, embark, as it were, on organising a sailing competition; this time the J80 competition that will take place between the 3rd-6th September in the Sotogrande Port.

Nacho Cifuentes, pro-ject manager for the manage-ment of the southern slipways, and Bevelle Nautical club ma-nager, is busy these days with the logistics and preparation of a national championship in which between 25 and 30 boa-ts could participate. Following the successful experience of the RC44 last June, he now faces a competition for recreational and light sailing. “Despite the short time we had, we secured the RC44 competition and then they approved the plan for the organisation of the J80 Spa-nish Cup this year, the J80 Spa-nish Championships in 2015, and the World Championships in 2016. We are very happy and pleased”, said Nacho Cifuentes.

The crew of a J80 comprises of four to five people. Its final number depends on the overa-ll weight and that that doesn’t exceed 336.60 kgs. The ship is eight meters long and 2.49 me-ters wide.

“This competition, unlike the RC44, is much more acce-ssible since the J80 boat allo-ws amateur crews more accus-tomed to recreational sailing to participate. In the RC44 the budgets are higher because the teams and crews are more pro-fessional. The championship to take place in September, in just a few weeks, will see groups of friends who will form tea-ms and go sailing for entertain-ment and training” explains the project manager.

Those interested in the J80 can find all the information re-garding documentation and the logistics of the competition on the web that has been created for the Spanish J80 Cup.

Many of the boats participa-ting in the Spanish Champions-hip belong to the local fleet: the J80 Sotogrande Porto current-ly composes a total of 12 boats. Once the championship takes place, the fleet moored in the marina will return to the IV Nh Resorts J80 Circuit, which will

begin next October. This circuit is what is known as a local le-ague, which runs throughout the year, and that last July en-ded with Herbalife as winner for the third year in a row, lea-ving NH Almenara in second place, and third place for the PAS team. Herbalife is undoub-tedly the boat to beat, when it arrives in Sotogrande, having achieved third place on the po-dium in the King’s cup, held a few days ago in Palma de Ma-llorca. “We are happy, we must not lose perspective but this third place in a regatta whe-re practically the best skippers and crews are in, is better than good. Our aim was to impro-ve on last year’s result and we able to do so. It is true that we

were really hoping for a victory in hand for two days, but that’s sailing, it doesn’t just depend on you and I’ll stick with this placing and drive it gives us for future events’ said the boat owner, a pleased Pepequin Or-baneja after taking third place. The onshore site will be situa-

ted on the Banks of the Marlin, where the local fleet is moored, and where the future site of the Bevelle Nautical Club will be located. The organisation will construct a marquee, next to the competition office, where the sailors will be catered for. In addition, one of the bars set

up in the same area will be res-ponsible for providing food and drink for the crews. The parti-cipating vessels are expected to arrive from other parts of the country, and it will be then when the Sotogrande Port will fill with the competition’s frien-dly atmosphere.

l.v. / SOTOGRANDE.- Las encues-tas realizadas por los técnicos municipales en los campos de golf también desvelan una serie de circunstancias favorables, como que la inestabilidad de los países musulmanes de los últimos años ha desviado parte de sus clientes a entornos más seguros como el andaluz, y el sanroqueño en particular.

En cuanto a la mejora del negocio prevista para este año, es difícil dar un porcentaje, porque la realidad de estos es-tablecimientos es dispar. Así, los que se nutren principalmen-te de las cuotas de sus socios y abonados estiman que este in-cremento será mínimo, de en-tre el uno y el tres por ciento, pero otros clubes hablan inclu-so de una subida de hasta el 15 por ciento. Respecto al compor-tamiento de los clientes de los clubes, el número de salidas re-gistradas en 2013 se sitúa en

una media de 40.000, si bien se llega en algún caso a las 64.000. Aunque hay que tener en cuenta una realidad: mientras los so-cios pueden hacer unas 30 sali-das al año, los visitantes suelen hacer una. Eso sí, es habitual que estos últimos aprovechen su estancia en San Roque para jugar en varios campos.

del resto de Europa, si bien hay una importante presencia de estadounidenses. De los euro-peos, los británicos y escandi-navos se llevan la palma, sin olvidar la fuerte presencia de alemanes.

Además, según el estudio dado a conocer a principios de julio por la Consejería de Tu-rismo de la Junta de Andalu-cía, durante 2013 la comuni-

dad recibió 452.000 turistas que tenían como principal mo-tivación la práctica del golf, lo que supone un incremento del 5,4 por ciento respecto al año anterior. En base a esta cifra, la cantidad correspondiente a San Roque sería de unos 45.000 turistas. Este visitante se ca-racteriza, según el citado es-tudio, por una estancia media de 12,8 días, gastando más 86

euros al día. Este segmento re-percute en otros como la res-tauración y las compras. Es cu-rioso que el 66 por ciento de los turistas encuestados afirman que su única motivación para visitar Andalucía es la práctica del golf. Durante su estancia en la región recorren tres campos distintos de media, y dan una nota alta al destino turístico andaluz: un 8,8 sobre 10.

SOTOGRANDE.-El alcalde de San Roque, Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix, y la teniente de alcalde delegada de Turismo, Dolores Marchena, dieron a conocer una serie de datos que revelan que la práctica del golf en el muni-cipio generó en 2013 unos in-gresos cercanos a los 20 millo-nes de euros. Cifra que alcanzó los 500 millones de euros en toda la comunidad autónoma andaluza.

Como en San Roque se ubi-can nueve de los 108 campos de

golf andaluces, extrapolar las cifras regionales supondría un dato aún mayor, subiendo hasta los 41,5 millones de euros.

Marchena destacó que es-tos ingresos pueden quedarse cortos, ya que el negocio inmo-biliario y hostelero ligado al golf es también muy importan-te. “Algunos hoteles han seña-lado que más del 60 por ciento

de sus clientes eligen sus ins-talaciones porque vienen a San Roque a practicar el golf, a lo que habría que sumar lo que gastan estos turistas en res-taurantes y otros negocios, no sólo de San Roque sino también de los municipios vecinos”, de-claró la edil. Según manifestó, tanto ella como los técnicos de la delegación de Turismo son

conscientes de esta realidad, y por eso la información sobre los campos de golf es una pieza fundamental cada vez que acu-den a las distintas ferias turís-ticas internacionales.

Respecto a las nacionalida-des de los clientes de los clu-bes, la teniente de alcalde infor-mó que responden a un total de 27 países de todo el mundo, si

bien predominan los europeos, en especial los británicos.

Las encuestas realizadas hablan de que la crisis ha afec-tado también a este turismo, en especial en lo relativo al nego-cio inmobiliario. De hecho, al-gunos campos han tenido que rebajar los precios de los green fees, e incluso empezar a co-brarlos a sus socios.

“Some hotels have indicated that 60 per cent of their cliente-le chose their facilities becau-se they come to San Roque to

play golf, and on top of which we should also add what the-se tourists spend in restaurants and other businesses, not just in San Roque but also in neigh-bouring municipalities”, said.

The mayor and exper-ts from the Tourism office are very much aware of this and so the information about the

golf courses is a fundamental part of their strategy every time they visit different internatio-nal tourism trade fairs.

Regarding the nationalities of the clubs’ clients, the Depu-ty Mayor reported that a total of 27 countries from around the world are represented, with Eu-ropeans, and in particular the

Desde que comenzara el mes de agosto, han sido cuatro las competi-ciones que ya han tenido lugar en el complejo ubicado jun-to a Trocadero Sotogrande. La afluencia de jugadores sigue siendo muy buena, llegando, por ejemplo, a las 110 parejas inscritas en la primera edi-

ción del Torneo Sotogrande. Además, este trofeo contó con la asistencia, en la entrega de premios del ex tenista Manuel Santana. El palmarés de dicho torneo quedó de la siguien-te manera. En Masculino A el primer puesto fue para Ger-man Shaffer y Daniel Dios; en Femenino A, la pareja ganado-ra estuvo compuesta por So-nia Ros y María Martín Peña; en la categoría mixta, el pri-mer puesto lo alcanzaron Car-men Azcoitia y José Antonio Vela; en la modalidad de ale-vines triunfaron Herberto Gut

With the arrival of the sum-mer, the atmosphere and ran-king of the players is more no-ticeable than ever both by the competitions as well as the classes.

Plaza de los Naranjos. Puerto De-portivo Sotogrande. Ha caído el sol. De pronto, el silencio se hace entre el público. Empie-

za a sonar My way, de Frank Sinatra. Al piano, Pedro Monty, pianista, composi-tor y arreglista que, con este clásico de 1969 da comienzo al espectáculo El rei-no de las musas. Una performance don-de piano y pintura se dan la mano gra-cias a la presencia, en el mismo espacio, del artista José Manuel Gamero Gil, que es el encargado de dar vida a dos de sus obras al ritmo de la música interpretada por Pedro Monty.

Los responsables, y culpables, de esta bonita puesta en escena son Mo-sayko Arte Música y la Asociación Cul-tural Sotogrande. Carmen Jiménez y Adrian van Loon, portavoces de ambas entidades, respectivamente, han logra-do una vez más convertir la Plaza de los Naranjos en lugar para la cultura, la música y el arte.

En esta ocasión, música y pintura se unieron para satisfacer al público que se acercó hasta allí y que disfrutó oyen-do las diferentes interpretaciones del pianista; y presenciando, en directo, el proceso de creación de una obra de arte.

Clásicos como Bésame mucho, de Consuelito Velázquez, o Let it be, acom-pañaron al pintor en las diferentes eta-pas creativas por las que José Manuel Gamero Gil iba pasando hasta terminar cada una de sus obras.

El público, interesado en ver cómo se desarrollaba el espectáculo, no paró de hacer fotos y grabar vídeos para po-der enseñar a amigos y familiares lo que allí estaba sucediendo.

En las caras de Adrian van Loon y Carmen Jiménez se podía ver la satis-facción del trabajo bien hecho. En su intervención, Van Loon agradeció a la familia Hinves, que cedió el piano de cola, su colaboración; y destacó el valor de esta novedosa puesta en escena que será presentada en Alemania el próxi-mo otoño.

Quienes acudieron a la Plaza de los Naranjos, además de contemplar nume-rosas obras de arte repartidas por todo este espacio; también degustaron vinos y aperitivos que llegaron de la mano de Pinna Fidelis y Extra Natural. Todo un lujo, en una tarde preciosa.

La Plaza de los Naranjos se convirtió en el escenario ideal para el espectáculo El reino de las musas, un montaje en el que los asistentes pudieron contemplar el proceso de creación de un cuadro de manos del

natra starts playing. On the piano, Pedro Monty, pianist, composer and arranger, who, with this 1969 classic, started the ‘The Kingdom of the Muses’ show. A performance where piano and painting go hand in hand thanks to the artist José Manuel Gamero Gil, who is responsible for giving life to two of his works to the beat of the music played by Pedro Monty.

Those responsible for this mise-en-scene are Mosayko Art Music and the Sotogrande Cultural Association. Carmen Jiménez and Adrian van Loon, spokespersons of both companies res-pectively, have managed once again to turn the Plaza de los Naranjos of Soto-grande Marina into a place for culture, music and art.

On this occasion, music and pain-ting came together to please members of the public who attended, and they enjoyed listening to the different per-formances from the pianist; and wit-nessing, live, the process of creating a work of art.

Classics like Bésame mucho, from Consuelito Velázquez, and Let it be, ac-companied the painter at the different creative stages that José Manuel Ga-mero Gil was going through to finish each of his works.

Members of the public, interes-ted in seeing how the show unfolded, did not stop taking pictures and vi-deos to show family and friends what was taking place. Satisfaction for a job well done could be seen on the faces of Adrian van Loon and Carmen Jiménez. In his speech, Van Loon thanked the Hinves family, who gave their grand piano, for their collaboration; and hig-hlighted the value of this innovative mise-en-scene that will be on show in Germany this autumn.

Those who attended the Plaza de los Naranjos of Sotogrande Marina, in addition to providing numerous works of art scattered throughout the space: also tasted wines and appetizers made by Pinna Fidelis and Extra Natural. A real treat for this beautiful evening in Sotogrande.

Existe una tradición en La Línea que se remonta hasta donde alcanza la memoria. Dicen los vecinos de La Atunara que na-

ció con la propia barriada. Se trata de los volaores, ese pescado secado al sol que se vende cada verano en las calles de este rincón marinero.

La temporada empieza con la Fe-ria de La Línea, a mediados de julio, y dura alrededor de un mes. Una veinte-na de barcos pesqueros de La Atunara se echa al mar para capturar esta espe-cie, denominada así por los saltos que dan con sus aletas. La pesca se realiza de forma artesanal con redes a la deri-va. Cada embarcación suele coger entre 6.000 y 10.000 volaores. Una vez en tie-rra, llega el momento del secado. Prime-ro se les corta la cabeza y se les quitan las tripas. Una vez limpios se salan y se cuelgan al sol. Llega entonces una de las estampas más características de La Atunara, la de las calles y azoteas llenas de volaores colgados de los cordeles.

Francisco tiene uno de los caracte-rísticos puestos callejeros donde vende los volaores. Lleva unas cuantas tem-poradas dedicándose a esta tradición y en ésta ha capturado unos 6.000 ejem-plares. Francisco explica que el proceso de secado depende del viento. Así, si es poniente, el volaor tarda tres días para estar listo para el consumo. Si es levan-te, requiere el doble de tiempo para que esté curado.

Al principio de la temporada, cuan-do empiezan a verse los primeros vo-laores en la calle, el precio por unidad suele estar en 2,5 euros. Luego, según va avanzando agosto, el precio va redu-ciéndose hasta llegar al euro por volaor. “Los volaores llevan vendiéndose des-de que existe La Atunara. Se pesca arte-sanalmente y, si está bien salado, pue-de aguantar en la nevera todo el año al igual que la mojama”, explica Francisco.

A estas alturas de verano la pesca del volaor ya ha concluido y los vende-dores sacan a la calle sus últimas exis-tencias. Ahora es el turno de la tempo-rada de la melva en La Atunara.

Francisco afirma que los volaores re-quieren mucho trabajo y que apenas da para subsistir en verano. En su elabo-ración participan desde los tripulantes de los barcos que los capturan hasta los familiares de éstos que se dedican a la limpieza de los pescados.

Venta callejeraJuani lleva siete veranos dedicándo-

se al volaor. Su puesto está pegado a la playa de La Atunara, junto a los barcos que descansan en la arena. Su puesto es como el de todos los demás: una mesa donde mostrar los ejemplares tapados con una mosquitera, un carro donde guardar las existencias, una sombrilla para protegerse del sol y una silla para hacer más llevadera la espera de los clientes. “Esto requiere mucho traba-jo y deja muy poco dinero”, relata Juani mientras muestra sus manos llenas de cortes por las horas de limpieza de los pescados. “Hay días que acabamos a las seis de la mañana. No se hace otra cosa. Durante ese mes no hay tiempo para niños, ni para hacer de comer ni para nada”, añade.

El marido de Juani está desemplea-do y es un familiar suyo el que faena. Ella los limpia, seca y vende. “Los volao-res no se estropean”, convence Juani a un cliente de Málaga que acaba de com-prar 40 piezas. beza. Antonia este año no se ha dedi-cado al volaor, ya que tiene un familiar enfermo, pero esta tradición no tiene secretos para ella. “Es muy sacrificado y cada vez nos lo ponen más difícil. Yo siempre he destinado lo poco que he sa-cado cada verano al material escolar de los niños para empezar el colegio”, re-lata Antonia, que esboza una sonrisa al comprobar que a su amiga Juani le va bien el día. Ya quedan pocos volaores. Agosto toca a su fin. Dentro de poco los puestos de La Atunara recogerán hasta el año que viene.

There is a tradition in La Línea that dates back as far as living memory, say residents of La Atunara, which was created as

its own neighbourhood. We’re talking about volaores (or the flying fish); that sun-dried fish sold every summer on the streets of this seaside retreat.

The season begins with the Fair of La Línea, in mid-July, and lasts about a month. Around twenty fishing boa-ts from La Atunara head out to sea to catch this species, named after the fins they use to leap out of the water. The fish are caught by hand with drift nets. Each boat usually can hold around 6,000-10,000 volaores. Once ashore, they are then dried. Firstly, their heads and guts are removed. Secondly, they are salted and hung in the sun and then they are hung from streets and rooftops forming one of the most iconic images of La Atunara.

Francisco owns one of the iconic street stalls selling volaores. He has spent several seasons dedicated to this tradition and has captured over 6,000

fish. Francisco explains that the drying process depends on the wind. If there’s a ponent (westerly) wind, the fish will take three days to be ready for con-sumption. If there’s a levant (easterly) wind, the time needed is double.

At the beginning of the season, when the first volaroes begin to be seen on the streets, the price per unit is usually 2.5 euros. Then, as you go into august, the price decreases to around one euro per fish. “The volaores have been sold ever since La Atunara has been in existence. Fished by hand, and if well salted, can be stored in the fridge all year round just like mojama”, explained Francisco.

At this time of the summer, the fis-hing season has already finished and street vendors are putting out their last few items.

Francisco says that the fish are la-bour intensive, and that it’s just enough to live off during the summer. In their preparation, everyone from the crew-men of the ships to their families is in-volved in cleaning the fish.

Juani has spent seven summer sea-

sons devoted to the volaores. Her sta-ll is on the beach of La Atunara, next to the boats resting on the sand. Her stall is like all the others: a table where her fish are on display covered over with a mosquito net, a shopping trolley where she keeps her stock, an umbrella to pro-tect herself from the sun and a chair to make the wait for customers more bea-

rable. “This requires lots of work and leaves you with little money”, explains Juani whilst showing off her hands full of cuts from hours of cleaning fish. “There are days when we finish at six in the morning. We can’t do anything else. Throughout the month there is no time

for children, no time to eat, no time for anything”, she adds.

Juani’s husband is unemployed and she is the only one that works. She cleans, dries and sells the fish. “The fish don’t go off”, she tells a customer from Málaga who has just bought 40 of them. Another just came by left with around 20 or so in her bag. “At the end of the day, everything is sold, little by little”, Juani explains, whilst her friend Antonia, who keeps her company, nods in agreement. This year Antonia has not spent her time devoted to the flying fish as she has a family member who was taken ill, but this tradition has no secrets for her. “It is very demanding and every time is more difficult for us. I always have spent the little that I have earned each summer on school supplies for the children to start school”, says Antonia as she smiles and checks how her friend Juani is getting on. There are very few volaores left now. August is almost over. Soon the stalls in La Atunara will close until next year co-mes around.
