A donkey had an IQ of 186. He hadno friends at all though. Becauseeven in the animal kingdom, nobodylikes a smart-ass.
Three men were hiking through a for-est when they came upon a large, rag-ing violent river. Needing to get onthe other side, the first man prayed,"Lord, please give me the strength tocross the river."Poof! Lord gave him big arms andstrong legs and he was able to swim
across in about 2 hours, having al-most drowned twice. After witnessing that, the second manprayed, "Lord, please give mestrength and the tools to cross the riv-er."Poof! Lord gave him a rowboat andstrong arms and strong legs and hewas able to row across in about anhour after almost capsizing once.Seeing what happened to the first twomen, the third man prayed, "Lord, please give me the strength, the toolsand the intelligence to cross this riv-er."
Poof! He was turned into a woman. She checked the map, hiked one hun-dred yards up stream and walkedacross the bridge.
The newly wed wife said to her hus-band when he returned from work: "Ihave great news for you. Pretty soonwe're going to be three in this houseinstead of two."The husband started glowing withhappiness and kissing his wife said:"Oh darling, I'm the happiest man inthe world."Then she said: "I'm glad that you feelthis way because tomorrow morningmy mother moves in with us."
Teacher: Cindy, why are you doingyour math multiplication on thefloor?Cindy: You told me to do it withoutusing tables!
A man and his wife were makingtheir first doctor visit prior to thebirth of their first child. After every-thing checked out, the doctor took asmall
stamp and stamped the wife's stom-ach with indelible ink.The couple was curious about whatthe stamp was for, so when they gothome, he dug out his magnifyingglass to try to see what it was. In verytiny letters, the stamp said, "Whenyou can read this without a needing amagnifying glass, come back and seeme."
When a man's best friend is his dog, that dog has a problem.
A woman had two female parrotswho were always yelling, "We'reeasy, wanna have a little fun?" Oneday, she was talking to her Priestabout this. He said he had two maleparrots and all they did was pray. Hethought perhaps they would be agood influence on the two females. So they put the four parrots together. So, the females yelled at the maleparrots, "We're easy, wanna have alittle fun?" One male parrot said tothe other, "You can stop praying, ourprayers have been answered!"
The greatest pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do.

Ryan Hogan (Carrig) and GeorgeHarding (Lorrha) created history bywinning the first ever Munster juve-nile title for Gurteen badminton Clubin UL Limerick recently. In what wasgoing to be a great day for the Club,Ryan teamed up with Alexandra Troy(Broadford BC)in mixed doubles tolift gold again and a second Munstertitle. In the singles George and Ryanbattled through a field of 18 players, and after some very close matches
both emerged as finalists. After 5hours of badminton George and Ryanfaced each other in the final match. As neither player wanted to concededefeat this proved to be the bestmatch of the competition with bothplayers showing great skill and ener-gy. Once again Ryan emerged victo-rious on a 21-19 score line andcomplete the treble with his 3rd titleon the day. Well done to both boys.

The Nenagh Special Needs ActivityFund was set up to part fund the week-ly activities attended by many childrenwith special needs from in and aroundNenagh. The activities include horse-riding at McDonnell’s Riding School,Ballintoher, swimming at the NenaghSwimming Pool and Jump n Gyms.Once a month there is a blessing in St.Mary’s of the Rosary for children andadults with disabilities, we say someprayers and sing some songs, this isfrom 12:30-12:50 and all are welcome, also once a month there is a story read-ing and colouring activity in the li-brary from 12:30-1:00 all are welcomehere also. Please contact Joan aboutdates for theses events. Children withdisabilities have the opportunity toparticipate in these activities with thehelp of many volunteers and groupssuch as Riding for the disabled, transi-tion year students from the schools intown, Enable Ireland and independentvolunteers.
Groups from Suaimhneas (SpecialClass for Autism), Aoibhneas (SpecialClass for Autism) and children withEnable Ireland come to these activi-ties. It is an invaluable service whichallows parents or staff to bring the pu-pils to activities which will have nu-merous benefits for them. Manychildren are learning new skills suchas horse-riding and how to swim, ac-tivities that may not have been other-wise possible. It is also possible forchildren to go to Jumping Gyms after
swimming for a social skills and playsession. A beneficial aspect of thesesessions is the fact that they are privatesessions run only for these groups andwith people who have knowledge ofspecial needs. The horse-riding is or-ganised by Riding for the disabled andthe pool is private for our session also. This allows the children to learn attheir own pace and have fun at thesame time in a safe environment. Many of the children that attend theactivity sessions have had huge suc-cess in overcoming fears and gainingindependence in areas such asswimming/dressing/showering etc, they also gain a lot of sensory feed-back from the activities as well as hav-ing opportunities to socialise withother children and groups. There arecurrently about 20 children using theservice however with more fundraisingetc we would hope to build on thesenumbers.
Money which we fundraise or is do-nated goes towards fees for horse-rid-ing, pool rental fees, specialisedequipment for the pool(floatation de-vices, physio equipment and occupa-tional therapy equipment.) and fees forJump N Gyms. This service is an in-valuable service which caters for aspectrum of special needs and a hugecatchment area. If you would like fur-ther information on how to become avolunteer or on fundraising or dona-tions please contact Joan Dunne on086-8604687

The standard at heat 3 of the Tavern’sGot Talent (Ballinderry, Nenagh) roseto an even higher level, if that waspossible, on Friday night last when alarge audience was treated once againto an exceptional nights entertain-ment. 5 superb acts gave the judgesmajor headaches, as only 3 could ad-vance to the semi-finals. Luckily therewill be a wild card night for the 2 run-ners up to have another go.
First on was Darragh McKenna, thenew Lord Mayor of Borrisokane! Dar-ragh performed “Love Me” and “TheDance”. The judges were impressedby Darragh’s presentation and thefeeling and emotion he put into hissongs. Next was Liz Mitchell fromRoscrea. Liz gave an excellent per-formance of Cyndi Lauper’s “TrueColours” and her “rock-chic” versionof “Black Velvet”. Once again thejudges praised her “excellent andtuneful” voice, and her confident andassured presentation.
Following that, all the way from Clon-mel, we had Owen Barrett. Owenmesmerized the audience with a flaw-less rendition of a Luke Kelly ballad, and his own original interpretation ofStand By Me. He also accompaniedhimself admirably on guitar. Judgeswere totally won over by the LukeKelly ballad, describing it as“stunning” and “moving”.
Back to the ladies for act number four, with Linda Bryan from Littleton.Again a most original voice, whichshe used to great effect for her songs. Her version of Faith Hill’s “ThereYou’ll Be” was truly beautiful, as washer second song, SarahMacLauchlan’s “Arms Of An Angel”.She reached the high notes with“clarity and ease” according to one of
the judges, Louise Heavin, who ad-mitted that she herself was trying toreach the notes with her!
Final act of the night was local manAlan Dunne. The judges admittedthey were truly “blown away” byAlan’s performance, which was full oforiginality, personality and showman-ship. His stunning guitar playing com-plemented his excellent vocal in hisfirst song, a rarely heard (at least inThe Tavern!) number by The Weez-ers. Following that, Alan donned histuxedo for a most entertaining andoriginal interpretation of Cry Me ARiver, recently covered by MichaelBuble. The judges likened this to a“theatrical performance” and praisedthe obvious work and thought that hadgone into it. There was choreography, drama and even a few James Bondmoves thrown in for good measure!
After the audience had a little time tobreathe and the adjudicators had ar-rived at a result, we were entertainedwith an interval act by Zoe and Melis-sa from The Dance Factory in Mullin-gar, who happened to be attending theshow. They gave us one of their owndances to a recent chart hit, and wentdown a treat!
Winner of the audience vote was AlanDunne, and qualifying for the semi-finals with Alan were Owen Barrettand Linda Bryan. They join last weekswinners Acts Of Piracy (Nenagh(, Pe-ter Walls, (Limerick), and ShaneO’Dwyer (Ballinderry).
There are just 2 heats left; heat 4 thisFriday the 26th March and an extraheat due to a high number of entries,on Thursday 1st April. If you want totake part you can still enter by calling067-22195 or 086-2656257.

How does it work again? Oh yes, youbegin with a subconscious dream, itthen moves into the consciousness(light bulb! time) and we suddenlyrealise a great idea. What happensthen? We imagine the idea, then imag-ine no one else will think it’s a goodidea. Or worse: they will laugh at, be-grudge or reject the idea. So we keepit to ourselves and it never sees thelight of day.
Now imagine how many excellent ide-as are locked up inside people’s heads, never to see the light of day, never tobe shared and realised. It begins tosound very sad. In a Global Entrepre-neurship Survey, 38 per cent of Irishpeople cited fear of failure as a keyreason for not starting a business. Thiscompares with 28 per cent in the US.They are not as afraid to try.
Ireland is known to have a strong en-trepreneurial culture. An article in theIrish Times recently stated that 9 percent of the adult population are estab-lished entrepreneurs. This compareswith 8.3 per cent in the US, 6 per centin the UK and just 2.8 per cent inFrance. But these positive figures re-late to the fact that Ireland is afraid offailure. We do not tolerate a businessgoing down the tubes as easily as theUS would. They view “failure” as alesson to be learned. We seem to viewfailure as… well… failure! We gener-ally give up and never try again.
It’s also a fact of life that unemploy-ment is rife in Ireland today, but sur-prisingly enough, there is no bettertime to start a new business than dur-ing a recession. Yes, that’s what I said. You may ask why? Well just a coupleof benefits are:
cheaper than ever
for money
fessionals looking for work
and use of Social Media
work
potential clients are takingthe time to look at theirneeds and look around fornew services
So what is the answer?
Aha, there is no definitive answer. However, what is necessary is for us,the dreamers, to become thinkers andultimately, doers. The first step in thisprocess is to truly believe in your idea.Once you believe, you then possessthe inner resources to turn this idea
into a business venture. You can succumb to the gloom anddoom or look for the positives and seeopportunities during recession times.
So, where do you begin?
A possible starting point is to use yourpersonal network to gauge interest orpossible success. The next step is tonetwork with other entrepreneurs andsee what they are doing right andwrong.
Then contact your local EnterpriseBoard to utilise their expertise and re-sources. Possibly attend an entrepre-neurial or “Start your own Business”course.
Lesson?
Take your business one step at a time.
Stop listening to the be-grudgers. Getout and get networking and surroundyourself with other entrepreneurs. Sit-ting in the pub on a Friday night lis-tening to unemployed PAYE workerswill not give you the boost you needto imagine your idea as a businessventure. If you are unemployed andhave a great idea, go and seek the sup-port you so rightly deserve to help turnyour dream into a thriving business.
Steve Jobs of Apple says “To turn re-ally interesting ideas and fledglingtechnologies into a company that cancontinue to innovate for years, it re-quires a lot of disciplines.” Note thelast word – it is a clear reminder to usthat we cannot do it all by ourselves. We need to build a team of experts, oroutsource the jobs (no pun intended)that we are less good at, and maintainthe momentum for the things we arereally good at.
Bill Watterson (American author)said: “… it's worth recognizing thatthere is no such thing as an overnightsuccess. …The truth is, most of us dis-cover where we are headed when wearrive. At that time, we turn aroundand say, yes, this is obviously where Iwas going all along. It's a good idea totry to enjoy the scenery on the detours, because you'll probably take a few.”
And enjoy the ride!

Four Wheel Drive is probably themost talked about and lauded Euro-pean bluegrass group of this pastdecade that has achieved great popu-larity without diluting or jazzing uptoo much this intriguing subgenre onthe big Americana music tree.
The earliest roots of the Four WheelDrive story can be found in the late80's when the Dutch mandolin playerPaul Van Vlodrop was asked to gath-er a group of musicians to play back-ground music for an Americantheatre play. Since then the grouphas stayed together in different line-ups featuring some of the finest Eu-ropean bluegrass musicians.
In 2000 their first album No doubtabout it was released on ContinentalRecords (now Rounder Europe) .This CD got things really going forthe band. Bluegrass Unlimited, themost popular American bluegrassmagazine, published a highlight re-view and a full length article on thisgroup, something very rare for a Eu-ropean band. The cd can be down-loaded from I tunes.
In 2002 4WD won Best EuropeanBluegrass Band Award at the EWOB(European World of Bluegrass) andwere sent to the States to representEurope at the world famous Worldof Bluegrass Festival, where theyreceived standing ovations at thefanfair . They also performed at TheStation Inn in Nashville, the Ameri-can mecca of bluegrass music butalso at The Cobblestone, one of theoldest and prestigious folk venues inDublin.
On top of that they won the Audi-ence Popularity Award at the annualEwob festival in Voorthuizen in2006 as well as in 2007 and last butnot least they received the 'GramParsons Award' presented by theDCMA (Dutch Country Music Asso-ciation) for best acoustic band of theyear no less than 7 times.
Their repertoire is a keen mixture ofhardcore bluegrass, country flavoredsongs and mostly self written catchy
instrumentals.
They do nothesitate tothrow in ana'cappella-song once ina while either! The versatility of this group of wellseasoned traditional musicians with astunning instrumental and vocaltechnique allows them to make across-over from American oldtimeand bluegrass styles to the Europeanfolk tradition. In doing so they seemto please folk oriented audiences allover Europe.
In the last couple of years they wereconsidered a revelation at prestigiousfestivals like the Omagh Appalachi-an & Bluegrassmusic Festival inNorthern Ireland as well as at theSkagen Folkfestival in Denmark andthe Bluegrass & Celtic Music Festi-val in Namur (B)
Four Wheel Drive prefers to play forjust one microphone which adds anice entertaining effect to their stageshow.
A couple of years ago Four WheelDrive met with female singer Jolan-da Peters from Holland while work-ing together on a musical theatreshow called 'Somewhere Between'.Things immediately clicked andJolanda was asked to sing theTownes Van Zandt song 'If I neededYou' on the new 4 Wheel Drive CDAnother Town. It quickly becameone of the band's most requestedsongs and the rest is... history.Jolanda is an outstanding singer witha remarkable soulful voice well ca-pable of moving people.

King Henry V of England is credited with having invented what some considerthe first true passport, notwithstanding the earlier examples cited, as a meansof helping his subjects prove who they were in foreign lands.
ueen Elizabeth doesn’t carry a passport when she travels abroad because theyare issued under her name. This puts her one-up on the Pope who is issued‘Passport No1’ by the Vatican.

Abuse of children
Children who witness abuse may haveproblems in school; have poorconcentration, poor academicperformance, difficulty mixing withothers, and a lot of absenteeism. Boyswho witness domestic abuse are morelikely to batter their partners as adultsthan boys raised in nonviolent homes.Children reared in an abusiveenvironment suffer from guilt and takeresponsibility for the abuse, they areconstantly anxious, and they feel guiltyfor loving the abusive parent. Theysuffer fear of abandonment, canbecome withdrawn, blame themselves, and combine contradictory behaviourssuch as being needy and clinging aswell as being rebellious and angry.
So why do people maltreat children? Why do they abuse their trust, andcause such psychological (andphysical) damage to the mostvulnerable in society. It is a difficultquestion to answer, but an importantone to understand. It must beemphasised that adults have aresponsibility to care for children undertheir care, and they cannot be excusedfor not doing so. But there areexplanations as to why child abusehappens. Here are some of them. Theabusers may be victims of abusethemselves, and see it as normal. Theymay have some mental andpsychological disorders, and beincapable of exercising healthy care ofchildren. Parents can only give whatthey have. They cannot give what theyhave not, but like Naomei Will theyhave the responsibility to make aneffort.
Abusers may also be experiencingsevere stress, for example, frompoverty, divorce, sickness, disability, lack of parenting skills, addiction todrugs, and inability to cope. They maybe full of anger, and have a great needto control.
Researchers sum up four primaryreasons as to why people harm theirchildren. These are transmission ofviolence through generations i.e. the
child victims learn that abuse is normal;that is what they have seen, and that ishow they have been formed. In a senseit can be looked at as a matter of howpeople communicate. If a child learns anegative form of communication bywhich it was normal to insult, berate, condemn, and put down; then thatchild, when they become adults, may belikely to use this form of negativecommunication when dealing with theirown families.
Other reasons are social stress, socialisolation, low community involvement, and family structure. Understandingthese means that measures can bebrought into action to prevent abuse. When the cycle of abuse is broken in afamily, then it is unlikely that it willpass on to the next generation.
Parents have a duty and a responsibilityto protect and properly form theirchildren. This responsibility involvesprotecting them from an abusiveenvironment. Not only that, it alsoinvolves the creation of a positive, nurturing environment that sows theseeds of self-confidence and a strongidentity in their children. In order to dothis parents must begin with respect(abuse is the very opposite of respect). You need to be a ‘good enough’ parent.Parenting is not only instinctive; thereis also much to learn. This can be donethrough parenting groups, or by readinggood books. But respect must be thehallmark of such groups or books. Ifparents give their children respect, love, attention, empathy, honesty, and allowthem appropriate independence, thenthe children will embody these traits asadults.
