My wife says I never listen.......orsomething like that.

Did you hear about the banker whowas recently arrested for embezzling€100,000 to pay for his daughter'scollege education? As the policeman, who also had adaughter in college, was leading himaway in handcuffs, he said to thebanker, "I have just one question foryou. Where were you going to getthe rest of the money?"

Little Tony was so happy to see hisgrandmother that he ran up and gaveher a big hug. "I'm so happy to seeyou, granny. Now daddy will have todo that trick he's been promising todo!"His grandmother was curious. "Whattrick is that, sweetie?"The little guy grinned at her. "I hearddaddy tell mammy that he wouldclimb the walls if you came to visitus again!"

Marriage is like a deck of cards, youstart off with 2 hearts and a diamondand after a few years all you want isa club and a spade

Why did the potato cross the road?He saw a fork up ahead.

"It's no good, sir," said the hopelesspupil to his English teacher. "I try tolearn, but everything you say goes inboth ears and out the other.""Goes in both ears and out the oth-er?" asked the puzzled teacher. "Butyou only have two ears.""You see, sir? I'm no good at math, either."

A brunette, a redhead and a blondeget captured and are placed before afiring squad. They are about to be executed andthe brunette says "Look...Hurricane"and points to her left while she getsaway. The redhead girl says"Look...Tornado", points and getsaway. Finally the blonde tries to do thesame thing she says "FIRE"

Adam was walking around the Gar-den of Eden feeling very lonely, soGod asked Adam, "What is wrongwith you?"Adam said, "Lord, I don't have any-one to talk to."God said, "Then I will give you acompanion, and she will be called a'woman'. This person will cook foryou and wash your clothes, she willalways agree with every decision youmake. She will bear your childrenand never ask you to get up in themiddle of the night to take care of

them. She will not nag you, and willalways be the first to admit she waswrong when you've had a disagree-ment. She will never have a head-ache, and will freely give 'love' andcompassion whenever needed. Shewill never question your behaviouror the company you keep. She willsupport you and understand that youhave important decisions to makethroughout your life and don't havetime for nonsense..."Adam asked God, "What will thiswoman cost?"God said, "An arm and a leg..."Adam said, "What can I get for just arib?"

Facebook is like jail, you sit aroundand waste time, you write on wallsand you get poked by people youdon't know.

Two confirmed bachelors sat talking.Their conversation drifted from poli-tics to cooking."I got a cookbook once," said thefirst, "but I could never do anythingwith it.""Too much fancy cooking in it, eh?"asked the second."You said it. Every one of the recipesbegan the same way - Take a cleandish and...."

For their anniversary, a couple wentout for a romantic dinner. Their teen-age daughters said they would fix adessert and leave it waiting. When they got home, they saw thatthe dining room table was beautifullyset with china, crystal and candles, and there was a note that read: "Yourdessert is in the refrigerator. We arestaying with friends, so go ahead anddo something we wouldn't do!" "I suppose," the husband respondeddryly, "we could clean the house."

System 10 is a scientificbased Weight Loss pro-gramme designed to correctyour metabolism faults. Sys-tem 10 is rapidly becomingIreland’s most popularweight loss plan and has aproven track record nation-wide of people losing 1 stoneand up to 2 sizes in onemonth. A good metabolismis critical to proper weightloss. With a good metabo-lism you burn more fat everyhour, 24 hours a day. Noth-ing can beat that for amazingresults. Because System 10is a metabolism correctionprogramme, once you reachyour target weight you willkeep the weight off.

Based on extensive researchby Limerick Dietician, Lec-turer and Creator of System10 David Mcdonagh, this isthe only plan in the world toinclude the 3 essential keysto fixing your metabolismfor the best and fastest lossever. The 3 essential keysare caloric specific balancedfood plans of normal, nat-ural food, realistic exer-cise and correction ofmetabolism problems. The combination ofthese keys ensuresthat every pound youlose is pure fat (notwater or muscle likeon most plans). Anyplan that does nothave all 3 keys isnot a genuine weightloss plan. It is a fad

plan that will bring you verylimited weight loss results.Metabolism faults like slug-gish thyroid [35% of adults],constipation [40% of adults],high blood sugar [50% ofadults] and toxic liver [dueto medication, smoking etc],can limit or stop your weightloss no matter how muchdieting or exercise you do.We address all of the abovemetabolism faults.

Exercise, especially toning isinvaluable to weight loss be-cause it speeds up the proc-ess of fat burning, (for everypound of muscle you haveyou burn 60 calories a day)makes you feel better andmost important of all gets ridof inches that you cannotachieve through dietingalone. Lose weight withoutexercise and you end up asaggy mess! System 10Weight Loss is suitable formen and women and is avail-able in 3, 6 and 10 (lose upto 40 Ibs) Private weigh ins, constant tracking and moti-

vation included onall plans.

A few months ago, the TipperaryFriends of Animals opened uptheir first shop in Abbey Lane,Nenagh, at the back of the Hiber-nian Inn. People were extremelygenerous in supplying the shopwith clothes, furniture, books, music, pictures, shoes, linen andnik-naks. The quality is veryhigh and the prices are exception-ally reasonable, which is a bless-ing during this recession. Afterthe care free days of the CelticTiger, every cent has come to bevery precious and has to go veryfar. So if you are watching thepennies and looking for goodquality and good value, pay a vis-it to the Tipperary Friends of An-imals Shop in Abbey Lane andnot only will you be scooping upgreat bargains, you will be help-ing a very worthy cause. Theyare open from Wednesdays toSaturday.

With the recession hitting hard, people are very hard pressed tokeep and feed their own animalsand the Tipperary Friends of Ani-mals are being asked to take onfamily pets as well as still trying

to save all the abandoned animalsthat are being found. To achievethis, money has to be raised andvolunteers are constantly soughtto help with fundraising. All thatis asked is a couple of hours ayear, small sacrifice to help alle-viate the dreadful suffering ofanimals.

To this end, there is a sponsoreddog walk being held in Nenaghon 29th May, starting in BanbaSquare and around the DarkRoad, a distance of about threemiles. It is always a fun after-noon during which you meet likeminded people and a wonderfularray of dogs.

Anyone interested in doing theDog Walk, is asked to contactLinda on 086-8163707 for theirSponsored Dog Walk Card or canalso collect one in theSportsman’s Dream in KenyonStreet, Nenagh.

It was Mahatma Gandhi that said,“The greatness of a nation and itsmoral progress can be judged bythe way its animals are treated”.

Sitting very happily in thesinger/songwriter tradition that hasblossomed in recent Ireland, Paddyhas also enjoyed a popularitywhich seems to evade his contem-poraries.

Things have gone from good togreat recently for the former busk-er who supported U2 on their Ver-tigo tour and has had week longsold-out residencies at the Olym-pia in Dublin. America has startedto open its doors following a sen-sational performance on The LateShow with David Letterman.

He is currently working on the fol-low up to his last Meteor Awardwinning album Addicted to Com-pany (Part One). Paddy has a fan-tastic set planned mixing some of

A packed house witnessed a veryexciting final of Buddy’s Got Talentlast Friday night in Buddy’s Bar,Capparoe, which sawBorrisokane/Ballinderry band theBeard of Zeus crowned deservedoverall winners. It was a thrillingfinal which saw 8 top class actscompete for the top prizes. First onstage was Michelle O Dwyer fromNenagh who got the event off to ahigh quality start with a great per-formance, accompanying herself onguitar. She was followed by MichaelLambe from Lorrha, who sang oneof his own compositions and thenfinished with a great performance ofPiano Man, accompanying himselfon piano and harmonica.Next up was Greg Starr who gavehis usual classy performance, start-ing with a beautiful rendition of MrBojangles and finishing with a rous-ing Nessun Dorma. Bringing thefirst half to a close was Bridget Ma-her from Roscrea. Bridget gave alovely performance of Don’t ItMake My Brown Eyes Blue and arousing rendition of the jazz stand-ard Too Darn Hot.

The second half commenced withCian Morris who started with a songof his own, Supernatural Cover Girl, followed by a cover. He was in ex-cellent form and also well accompa-nied by Brian Richardson on guitar.Next up was Harmony, 4 younggirls from the Nenagh area, whogave us something unique with anacapella rendition of 2 current chartsongs. Their unique arrangementsand super harmonies were impres-sive.Next was the Beard Of Zeus whogave us White Winter Hymnal bythe Fleet Foxes, and their own veryunique take on the Beach Boys’Barbara Ann. Closing the competi-tion was Mikey Finn who onceagain gave an intimate and heartfeltperformance of his two songs, ac-companying himself on guitar.

The judges (Noel Ryan, VeronicaCrowley, Andrew Walsh) retired tomark their sheets, and the audiencefilled in their voting cards, and weall waited with anticipation. Thencame the moment, and the resultwas announced; in 3rd place and re-ceiving €200 cash was Harmony.Second place went to Cian Morris, who received €300, and the winnerswho received €1000 cash and re-cording time in Earth RecordingStudios, Nenagh, was The Beard OfZeus. It would have been difficultfor anyone to argue with the results,as any of the other acts could alsohave featured in the top 3, such wasthe standard. All 8 acts deserve greatcredit; they gave very professionaland entertaining performances andcan be proud of their achievement.

Certainly Harmony could have abright future, particularly if theystay together and vary their pro-gramme as they progress with theirmusic. Cian Morris is already wellknown in North Tipp and is easily asgood as anything we have seen onthe All Ireland Talent Show; let’shope he gets a break in the near fu-ture. The Beard of Zeus has to beone of the freshest and most enter-taining bands around this area, withtheir unique take on every song theydo. The simple mix of acoustic gui-tar, bass, and banjo works reallywell, but all 3 of them can sing andtheir harmonies are impressive. They also have the knack of choos-ing music that works for them andadding their own touch to it. We alllook forward to the launch night oftheir CD which hopefully they willmake as part of their prize.

On behalf of the judges, Noel Ryanpaid tribute to all the contestants, and thanked Joe Mulqueen for hav-ing the initiative to stage the compe-tition and give up and coming talentthis opportunity. It was a great suc-cess and best of luck to the winners, and all who took part.

Irish red ale, red ale, or Irish alegains its slightly reddish colourfrom the use of a small amountof roasted barley. The term redale or red beer is used by brewersin countries other than Ireland;however the name Irish Red istypically used when roasted ma-terial is used. In the UnitedStates, the name can describe adarker amber ale, and somebreweries may produce a “red”beer that is a lager with caramelcolouring.

Cuilan Loughnane is a native ofTemplemore who took up an in-terest in brewing while workingin Vancouver in Canada duringthe 90’s. Cuilan came back toIreland in 1997 and started a jobas a brewing assistant in Dwan’sbrewery in Thurles under Englishbrew master David Jones. WhenJones moved onto a brewery inSweden, Cuilan took up the run-ning of Dwan’s brewery. In2001 Cuilan and his wife Sallyset up the Shelta Beer Co. Ltdand obtained a lease from BillDwan for the brewery in Thurles.

Over the next 3 years they ran avery successful export businessand won many awards for theirbeers. In 2004 the Dwan busi-ness was sold and Cuilan movedto Messr’s Maguire’s in Dublincity centre where he ran thebrewing operation until 2009.An opportunity then arose to pur-chase the Kinsale brewery whichhad ceased operating. A suitablepremise’s was located in Tem-plemore, the brewing equipmentwas purchased and the arduous

task of moving a brewery andre-commissioning it was under-taken. Finally after 6 months thebrewery was ready to go and du-ly open in August 2009. Initiallycontract work was undertaken toget the brewery up and running. However, Cuilan’s ambition hasalways been to brew a beerwhich would be widely availablein the local area. Since the de-mise of Perry’s in Rathdowney in1966 there has been no local aleavailable throughout North Tip-perary. With this in mind theWhite Gypsy Brewery are nowlaunching “Ruby” Irish red alewith the focus very much onbrewing a good flavoursomebeer.

Ruby Irish Red Ale started life inDwan’s brewery in 1997 underthe name Rich Ruby. It was arecipe created by the then BrewMaster David Jones. In 1998 itwon a gold medal at the Stock-holm Beer and Whiskey festival. In 2000, the beer was enteredinto the International IndustryAwards held in London, and wona Bronze Medal. The recipe wasslightly tweaked to put a betterbalance on the final flavour andthe beer went on to win 3 goldand 2 bronze medals at beer festi-vals in the UK over the following3 years. Cuilan then beganworking for Messr’s Maguire’sin Dublin and the beer disap-peared off the market for the next5 years. But now finally it’s be-ing brewed again in Templemoreand available for the first timethroughout North Tipperary. Formore info. Phone 086 1724520

It is time to fight back againstthose that have betrayed the menand women who sacrificed them-selves for this nation in 1916We are here today to commemo-rate the heroes of 1916 and the warof independence and those thatgave their lives in the fight for in-dependence from British rule inIreland. This is the 95th Anniversa-ry of the Easter rising. 1916 sawthe coming together of nationalist’srepublican’s language activiststrade unionists and the women’smovement in the cause of Irishfreedom. Today we need to buildthe same alliances in the cause of aunited Ireland. There has neverbeen such a need for Republicanpolitics. The big questions of sov-ereignty of people’s rights of citi-zenship are more relevant todaythan they have been for manyyears.

Our political elite have time andtime again acted against the inter-ests of the Irish People. They haverefused to take the democraticwishes of the people when we saidno to the Nice and Lisbon treatieswhen at the insistence of their po-litical masters in Europe we werethreatened with Armageddon andforced to vote again. The electorateof Ireland have always had ahealthy distrust of the whole Euro-pean project and that is justified.European regulations are now hav-ing disastrous effects on peoplehere in North Tipperary whether itis those that face financial ruin be-cause of European Central Bank

policies on lending huge amountsof money into the Irish Economywhich drove the disastrous policiesthat led to the greed and corruptionto the benefit of the Elite who havenow parked their debts in N.A.MAor those that are being told theycant cut their own turf or those thatwill see their daily postal deliveriesdisappear. The ordinary Irish peo-ple and small businesses are beingforced to pick up the tab for theseelite Bankers Solicitors and Alphamale developers. The previous Government wavedthe white flag of surrender andhanded over sovereignty won bythe people we commemorate hereto the IMF/EU/ECB without a shotfired and our new Governmenthave meekly and happily takenover where FF and the Lowryitesleft off by taking their orders fromFrankfurt as opposed to the peoplethat elected them.

We have had three reports into ourbanking Armageddon and not oneperson languishes is jail despite theincredible suffering that they in-flicted on the innocent people ofIreland who are suffering becauseof their greedy actions. The samepeople run our banks the same bo-nuses are being paid and the samebanking policies will take place aslong as banks remain in privatehands. They need to be fully na-tionalised and run on behalf of thepeople and the guilty bankers needto be prosecuted with their illgotten gains stripped from them.Believe me if we allow FG/Labourto administer the pain that has been

set out for us in the IMF/ECB dealthis country will collapse financial-ly. We as a people need to start anEconomic war against those thatare misusing our taxes. We need toconsider withholding our mortgagepayments in solidarity of those thatare being squeezed by financialinstitutions we need to encouragetax avoidance ( something I wouldnever have considered encouragingbefore ) We need these things be-cause people are suffering unjustlyat the hands of Bank bullies andState bullies that are hounding peo-ple over debts with late nightphone calls and threatening letterswhile the people that caused theeconomic collapse of this countryget away scot free and the taxpay-ers are hounded into picking up thetab. The only thing that with con-centrate the minds of the Govern-ment is the people coming togetherand refusing to pay taxes while themoney is being handed over to theIMF/ECB to pay back the money-lenders of Europe. I would alsoencourage people to help out theprotesters in Corrib Mayo who aretrying to hold of the robbery of ourGas and Oil reserves which havethe potential to help the people ofthis country build Hospitals andSchools and much revenue for ourlocal councils. This is the frontlinefor the fight against economic trea-son inflicted on us by corrupt poli-ticians.

Next month we have the visit ofThe Queen of England to Cashelinvited by a council who used theunfortunate sickness of their Sinn

Fein Mayor to sneak through aninvitation to the representative of acountry who have inflicted terriblepain on their near neighbour. Itwould probably have been abovethe intelligence of the councillorsto actually research the reason tothe last visit of a British monarchto their town. Henry 11 came toCashel in 1172 to effectively layclaim to Ireland which actuallycaused so much hardship on theIrish people over the followingcenturies trying to rid ourselves oftheir interference. So downtroddenhave our political leaders becomethat we are willing to hand awayour dignity in pursuit of a few ex-tra euro in supposed extra touristrevenue. I feel that we would getfar more respect and dignity if wegrew as a nation a pair and actuallytook on the people that have inflict-ed so much pain on this proudcountry whether that be theIMF/ECB the Political elite, Shellor protesting against a monarchwho represents both the politicalelite and interfering neighbours. The time for the Irish people to riseup has come around again lets hon-our the men and women of 1916 bytaking on the political elite. Thankyou

We the Citizens, an independent nationalinitiative aimed at showing how Irelandcould benefit from citizens coming togeth-er in new forms of public decision-making,has been launched in Dublin. The objectiveis to help to renew democracy and to con-tribute towards the restoration of trust inpublic life, at this time of social and eco-nomic crisis in Ireland.

The Chairman of We the Citizens, FiachMc Conghail, who is Director of the Ab-bey Theatre, told the launch that a nationalcitizens’ assembly would be held in Juneto consider proposals on making the politi-cal institutions of the State better suited toserving citizens. The agenda of the assem-bly will be decided by seven citizen-ledevents around the country and by a nation-wide poll, conducted by an independentpolling company. 150 people, representinga cross-section of Irish society and whotook part in the poll, would be invited toparticipate at the assembly.

“All the political parties in the Oireachtashave made significant promises to lead andimplement political reform and what ‘Wethe Citizens’ will promise to do is two-fold,” said Mr Mac Conghail.

“We will maintain the pressure on our pol-iticians to change the way we are governedin this Republic. We will also show that abottom-up approach can support a betterand more productive citizen engagement increating public policy,” said Mr Mac Con-ghail. “Before the Dáil breaks for the sum-mer we will demonstrate to thegovernment and all the political parties thatthis is a proven way to reconnect Irish citi-zens to politics to the benefit of the countryas a whole.”

The Chairperson announced that the citi-zens’ events leading up to the national as-sembly would take place during May andJune in Kilkenny, Cork, Galway, Athlone,Letterkenny and Dublin. We the Citizenswould be organising the events but not set-ting the agenda for them. The discussionwould be highly-participatory and led bythe citizens themselves.

‘We the Citizens’ Executive Director, Car-oline Erskine, said that the initiative wastimely. “The depth of this crisis hasbrought with it a great opportunity to startafresh. To restructure. There is a mood forpublic mobilisation. People are ready toget involved in constructive, citizen-ledaction. To speak up for what’s important tothem, to speak up for Ireland,” she said. “We the Citizens plan to show some practi-cal and productive ways of doing that.”

The Professor of Politics in UCD, DavidFarrell, will lead a comprehensive academ-ic study of the process and the outcomes. His research colleagues are Dr Jane Suiterof UCC, Dr Eoin O’Malley of DCU andDr Elaine Byrne of TCD. There will alsobe a high-level international advisoryboard of academics with experience of bestpractice in relation to citizens’ assembliesin other countries.

Professor Farrell told the launch that citi-zens’ assemblies have been used success-fully in other countries. “They are a newand innovative way of allowing citizens tobe actively involved in taking importantdecisions that affect our daily lives. Citi-zens are given the opportunity to be in-formed, to consider and debate all side ofan argument: they are able then to take de-cisions on what are often quite complexissues,” he said.

“Citizens’ assemblies are a tried and testedmethod of giving citizens the opportunityto engage directly in important decisionsabout their own political system.”

“I have some personal experience of this, having participated as an expert witness toa number of them (in British Columbia,Ontario and the Netherlands), and I’m de-lighted that we have the opportunity todemonstrate how this method can alsowork here”, added Professor Farrell.

We the Citizens is being steered by aBoard of people who have distinguishedthemselves as Irish citizens across the pri-vate, public and NGO sectors and who aregiving their time and expertise, entirely probono.

We the Citizens is being organised in asso-ciation with the Irish Universities Associa-tion the representative body for the sevenIrish universities. IUA Chief Executive,Ned Costello, said that the Association wasglad to give its endorsement and supportfor the initiative. “This is an importantcontribution to national debate on the fu-ture of our political system and processes. The joint involvement of academia andsociety in that dialogue underlines the val-ue which the universities place on commu-nity engagement”, he said.

We the Citizens is funded by the AtlanticPhilanthropies.

Go placidly amid the noise andhaste,

And remember what peace theremay be in silence.

As far as possible without surrenderbe on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly & clearly;and listen to others,

even the dull & ignorant;they too have their story.

Avoid loud & aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,you may become vain & bitter;

for always there will be greater andlesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well asyour plans.

Keep interested in your own career,however humble;

it is a real possession in the chang-ing future of time.

Exercise caution in your businessaffairs;

for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what

virtue there is;many persons strive for high ideals;and everywhere life is full of hero-

ism.

Be yourself.Especially, do not feign affection.

Neither be cynical about love;

for in the face of all aridity & disen-chantment

it is perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of theyears,

gracefully surrendering the things ofyouth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shieldyou in sudden misfortune.

But do not distress yourself withimaginings.

Many fears are born of fatigue &loneliness.

Beyond wholesome discipline,be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,no less than the trees & the stars;

you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to

Programme Announced for ClancyBrothers Music and Arts Festival 2011

Features Paul Brady, Mundy and Paddy Casey

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are callingFrom glen to glen, and down the mountain side

The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying'tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.

But come you back when summer's in the mead-ow

Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow'tis I'll be there in sunshine or in shadow

Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.

And if you come, when all the flowers are dyingAnd I am dead, as dead I well may be

You'll come and find the place where I am lyingAnd kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.

And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above meAnd all my dreams will warm and sweeter beIf you'll not fail to tell me that you love me

I simply sleep in peace until you come to me.

Danny Boy

Songs

Cashel of the HillsMy native place of matches grace, what charmscan equal thine? Let greater men words sweeterpen to sing your praise than mine; Thy pasturesfair and gardens rare which florid fragrance fills,Thy shady nooks and laughing brooks-sweet

Cashel of the hills.

Slopes steep and green can here be seen, the workof nature’s hands; And fields as fair, I do declare,as e’er the breezes fanned; And placid floods andwaving woods and silver sparkling rills, And

pleasing dells and holy wells in Cashel of the hills.

And fair Newtown today looks down like a moth-er on its young; Defusing light and virtue brighther faithful ones among, Who in the past stood

firm and fast and bore their share of ills. And trueare still to Erin and will, in Cashel of the hills.

Here men were known to hold their own, thoserural homesteads grand; And likewise fight to win

their right to this long-plundered land; In LandLeague days they fanned the blaze described by

abler quills, They did not fail but faced the jail inCashel of the hills.

Here maids are fair beyond compare, and Irish, heart and hand; They can be seen to wear the

green-they’re lovers of their land; In Cornadoughsome years ago, their valour gave us thrills, Whenin that fight they conquered White in Cashel of the

hills.

Sunday 10th April was a beautifulSunny day. It was also the day thatthe County Tipperary Ryan YouthOrchestra travelled to Ballincollig toperform in concert with the CorkJunior Youth Orchestra under thedirection of Terry McCarthy. There were good performances byboth orchestras, the ever popularHungarian Dance no 5 getting awell deserved ‘Bravo’ as well as thedelightfully rousing RadetskyMarch and the very appropriatelytimed Hallelujah Chorus. A veryenthusiastic audience, mainly com-prised of parents and family mem-bers gave vent to their delight bytheir warm applause. It was theCork orchestra’s ‘End of Season’concert.

For Tipperary it was a repeat con-cert, the first leg of which took placein Tipperary last year. Because theCounty Tipperary Ryan Youth Or-chestra is based in Tipperary Town, not so far from the county border, itnaturally attracts young musiciansfrom the neighbouring counties whoattend weekly rehearsals held at St.Ailbe’s School in Tipperary Townunder the direction of Michael JohnRyan. At least two members of theCTRYO come from County Cork, namely Violinists HannahO’Sullivan, Mitchelstown andCoimhe Clancy, Kilbehenny. Ninemembers come from County Limer-ick including Aileen Dooley,Knocklong, Rachel Flynn, Galbally,Richie, Sinead and Aine O’Carroll,Kilteely, Charlotte O’Donoghue,Garryspillane, and Orla Ryan(Oola). The rest come from placesall over County Tipperary, DeirbhilaBrennan, Grainne and Ashling Cole,Martin Dillon, Aine Dargan, AoifeDonovan, Jake Flannery, JenniferFogarty, Eadaoin Heffernan, EvaJackson, Heather O’Dwyer, Brid

and Theresa O’Dwyer, James Ryan,Charles Shortt, Quentin Thompson,Orla Ryan, Brid Og Dwyer, LiamHennessy, Ciaran Healy and AlexRyan. In addition, there are alsobrass and percussion rehearsals heldfor large concerts. The final concertin the CTRYO calendar this seasonis on the 22nd May. in Tipperarywhen the orchestra will present avery entertaining programme ofclassical favourites at BallykisteenHotel and feature it’s String Quar-tets, Ensembles and soloists as wellas Ryan School of Music memberswho will also take part. The orches-tra has had a good productive sea-son, it’s players availing oftechnique development and perfor-mance afforded by concert rehears-als and participation. There hasbeen a focus on String Quartets dur-ing rehearsals which was greatlysupported by a masterclass conduct-ed by members of the International-ly renowned Terpsychordes StringQuartet from Geneva in Switzerlandrecently. And of course it must besaid that the members of Cello Sec-tion have benefited greatly from theexpert tuition of Hungarian CelloVirtuoso Peter Sebestyan. Plans arealready being made to take the or-chestra abroad in 2012 and this willno doubt stimulate the interest of allmembers. But more about this indue course. During the summerbreak a new programme with anIrish flair to it, suitable for perfor-mance abroad is being planned..

In the meantime members will trav-el to the U.L. Concert Hall in Lim-erick on Saturday 7th May whereCelebrated Rock Violinist AnnaPhoebe will be the featured soloistwith The University of LimerickOrchestra conducted by MichaelJohn Ryan.

Her new autobiography,How the Light Gets In, has rightlyreceived a lot of publicity becauseshe talks frankly about living withdepression. In her introduction, McEvoy ex-plains why she has written this bookand how she manages every day.The focus is very much on depres-sion, what it is, and how to cope, and seen through the life of MaryMcEvoy and her personal experi-ence. AEOS 2 Scheme Must be Improved on to Maintain Interest-IFA

IFA Rural Development Chair-man Tom Turley said the Agri-Environment Programme is indanger of disintegrating as a re-sult of the watered down AEOS2 scheme which the Minister forAgriculture Simon Coveney hasintroduced. “The Minister mustrestore the maximum payment of€5,000 for 10,000 farmers as thisis the only way to ensure that theAEOS 2 scheme has a meaning-ful impact.”

Mr. Turley said great progresshas been made over the past 15years through farmers participat-ing in environmental works ontheir farms which has had hugebenefit to the environment andthe rural economy. The watereddown AEOS 2 scheme is a se-vere blow to farmers who havebeen committed to the Agri-En-vironment Programme and thelikelihood now is that uptake willreduce.

The IFA Rural DevelopmentChairman said 10,000 farmerswho are finishing REPS 3 face avery uncertain future and manywill not see the new scheme as aviable option.

On the AEOS 1 scheme Mr. Tur-ley called for all payments duefor 2010 to be made immediate-ly. It is estimated that €8m isdue to about 8,600 farmers whogot into last year’s scheme.

In relation to the 400 farmerswhose plans were rejected, IFAis advising farmers to appeal.Already, 150 farmers who haveappealed to the Department ofAgriculture have succeeded ingetting into the scheme as theyhad Natura land on rented groundfor less than 5 years and did notrequire a sustainable manage-ment plan. IFA is advising farm-ers in similar situations to appealas this will ease the pressure forplaces on the AEOS 2 scheme.

I would now like to have a closer look atthe question of comorbidity i.e. wheredepression is accompanied by one ormore other complaints. Of course, co-morbidity makes a complicated com-plaint even more complex and difficultto understand. In other words there is awide variation in the severity of depres-sion that people present with. The firstthing that research shows is that comor-bidity increases the severity and lengthof depressive episodes. Up to as manyas 75% of people presenting with de-pression, also suffer from at least oneother complaint. Paul Gilbert in hiswonderful book, Depression. The Evo-lution of Powerlessness explains thatdepression, which is preceded by or ac-companies other disorders, is called sec-ondary depression. Primary depressionis not preceded by any other psychiatricor physical complaints.Comorbidity should be distinguishedfrom the masking or disguising of de-pression by physical problems such asjoint aches, headaches, indigestion, orperhaps workaholism or other excessivebehaviours such as non-stop shopping orthrill-seeking. Research shows that in the U.S. 84% ofpeople presenting with depression had atleast one other complaint. The mostcommon comorbid complaints are anxi-ety, panic, social phobia and posttrau-matic stress conditions. There is a veryclose relationship between anxiety anddepression. While they are distinct com-plaints they are very much interwoven, and are difficult to separate.Depression can also be comorbid withsubstance addiction. Depressed peoplewho are misusing substances becomeworn out, have high relapse, and oftenbecome homeless. People who abusesubstances are also far more likely thanthe general public to get depression. Some psychological complaints are alsocomorbid with depression. The Ameri-can psychiatrists Jon Grant and MarcPotenza, both experts in gambling ad-diction, point to a study that shows aconnection between gambling addictionand depression. As might be expected, there is also a close link between PostTraumatic Stress Disorder and depres-sion. This is very clear to me when Ilook back at how I and my family wereafter the death of my child. Our entirefamily suffered from Post TraumaticStress Disorder, and depression was allpervasive. The story of this trauma anddepression can be seen in our book,When a Child Dies. Footsteps of aGrieving Family. Of course, Post Trau-matic Stress Disorder is not confined tobereavement, but to all types of trauma. For example, rape evokes a high level ofPTSD and comorbid depression. PTSDis an anxiety disorder following a trau-matic event.

As mentioned above, physical diseasesare also important in the context of de-pression. Their symptoms sometimesmask depression. The psychologist,Christopher Dickens, warns that it iseasy to underestimate how powerful de-pression is in the context of physicaldiseases in contributing to the death of asufferer. This is a very soberingthought, and alerts us to the deadly dan-ger of severe depression. In recent years much research is beingdirected at this area, which has shownthat there are medical diseases that in-crease the risk of depression, and it isadvisable that both the disease and thedepression be treated during the rehabil-itation period. Such diseases include di-abetes, heart disease, and HIV/AIDS.Other diseases which may cause symp-toms of depression are epilepsy, thyroidproblems, multiple sclerosis, stroke, brain trauma Lyme disease (an inflam-matory disease caused by bacteria fromthe bite of a deer tick (common in theU.S.), syphilis and Parkinson’s disease,to name but a few.

The Los Angeles based psychologist,Prentiss Price, has written some inter-esting stuff on this dimension of depres-sion, and, for example, looks at researchshowing that diabetes doubles the riskof depression, and that the chance ofbecoming depressed increases as diabe-tes complications worsen. Interestingly, there is also some proof that depressioncan also lead to diabetes. There is evi-dence, too, for the same conclusion inrelation to heart disease, and it has beenargued that depression can lead to lowbone density.
