Miss Beatrice, The church organist, was in her eighties and had never beenmarried. She was admired for her sweetness andkindness to all.One afternoon the priest came to callon her and she showed him into herquaint sitting room. She invited him tohave a seat while she prepared tea.As he sat facing her old Hammondorgan, the young priest noticed a cuteglass bowl sitting on top of it.The bowl was filled with water, and inthe water floated, of all things, acondom!

When she returned with tea and scones, they began to chat. The priest tried to stifle his curiosityabout the bowl of water and its strangefloater, but soon it got the better of himand he could no longer resist.'Miss Beatrice', he said,'I wonder if you would tell me aboutthis?'Pointing to the bowl.'Oh, yes,' she replied, 'Isn't itwonderful?I was walking through the park a fewmonths ago and I found this littlepackage on the ground. The directions

said to place it on the organ, keep itwet and that it would prevent thespread of disease. Do you know Ihaven't had the flu all winter.'

When my three-year-old son openedthe birthday gift from his grandmother,he discovered a water pistol. Hesquealed with delight and headed forthe nearest sink.I was not so pleased. I turned to mamand said, "I'm surprised at you. Don'tyou remember how we used to driveyou crazy with water guns?"Mam smiled and then replied, "OHYES! I do remember."

There was once a wife so jealous thatwhen her husband came home onenight and she couldn't find hairs on hisjackets she yelled at him, "Great, sonow you're cheating on me with a baldwoman!"The next night, when she didn't smellany perfume, she yelled again bysaying, "She's not only bald, but she'stoo cheap to buy any perfume!"

This little jewellers in Nenagh istruly a treasure trove for all brides, itis bursting at seams with silver, gold, pearls, diamonds everything youcould imagine a girl could want todazzle on and around their specialday, if you cannot find exactly whatyou desire what seems like anendless supply of books and suppliercatalogue are produced to findexactly what you’re after, or ofcourse you can alwaysget Tadgh Og to create you your ownbespoke piece!

Tadgh O Flynn’s is looking forwardto celebrating 50 years in businessnext year; It was established byTadgh Sr. a watchmaker, he and hiswife Nora are true experts and alwayson hand to give youthe benefit of their knowledge. TadghOg trained in the Kilkenny DesignCentre in the discipline ofgoldsmithing and after gainingexperience in Ireland and abroad heentered the family business in2005, even though as he says ”I’dbeen doing repairs science I was 16 Iwas just always interested in it”.

What draws most brides to Tadgh OFlynn’s is ‘Tadgh’s Wedding RingProcess’. Tadgh is nowspecialising in creating tailor madewedding bands. Most brides are filledwith dread at the thought of beingseparated from their rings for any

length of time, so the thought of 3 to4 weeks apart to make a ring fitting itperfectly is torture. In Tadgh OFlynn’s he takes your engagementring for only the time it takes to carveout a wax impression of the weddingring usually around a half hour, during which time you and yourhubby to be can choose from theirhuge selection of gents weddingbands, look at bridesmaids/groomsmen/parents, jewellery orgifts. After the wax is made to yourapproval, Tadgh Og then works fromthe wax and doesn’t need to keepyour ring for any length of time.

Tadgh Og explains that perhaps whyhe is so passionate about weddingring is that he is just after celebratinghis own wedding in April “Iunderstand that this is a very specialtime in peoples’ lives, and that theserings I’m creating are for their lifetime after. I also know the expenseinvolved in organising a wedding andaim to give the very best price Ipossibly can without compromisingon quality”, true value for money.

Visiting this little gem in Nenagh is adefinite for not only every bride but awonderful experience for anyonewith an interest in jewellery, all ofthe O’ Flynn family are waiting togreet you and make it a memorableexperience.

In a move to clarify its role and location,St Sheelan’s College, Templemore willin future be known as “TemplemoreCollege of Further Education”.

Principal Dr. Noel Colleran outlined therationale behind the rebranding movewhen he explained that the aim is tobuild on the stellar reputation of St.Sheelan’s College but seek to present thecollege in a more contemporary way.By building the geographical locationinto the identity of the college it is hopedto be more clearly identified with thelocal community.

The Board of Management, that formallyratified this new title at it’s Maymeeting, is confident that this newapproach will raise the appeal of thecollege among prospective students whoseek to gain for themselves a higherorbit of opportunity.

The newly branded Templemore Collegeof Further Education has been one of thegood news stories of the county over thepast decade and the success of thecollege has had significant benefits forthe town of Templemore. Many arestaying in accommodation in the town.In addition, having so many adults travel

into the town every day creates a lot ofadditional revenue for local businesses.Rebranding to include the name of thetown will foster a greater pride ofaffiliation with the local community.

HypnoSolutions opened earlier thisyear in Templemore. The Clinic is runby myself, Miriam DunneAdv.Dip Hypnosis. I have many years’experience with Hypnosis having usedit to have 3 wonderfulbirthing experiences and to then study itand begin a career in Hypnosis therapy.

Many people have misconceptionsabout Hypnosis mainly because theyhave seen stage shows, however,Hypnosis is not mind control it onlyworks on people who want it to work.Hypnosis is a wonderful relaxingtherapy that can afford change in thesub-conscious mind. There are no sideeffects and therefore it is suitable foreveryone. There are no tricks to theprocess either, you are absolutely awareof everything I say during hypnosis asyou are in a heightened state ofawareness. The effectiveness of theprocess is up to you, i.e. if you have thepositive mental attitude that youwill accept my suggestions you willachieve change. Simple as that, it reallyis. With hypnosis we encourage desiredchanges and enhance mental andphysical wellbeing. If you do not acceptthesuggestions you will have no change.

At HypnoSolutions I encourage desiredchanges and enhance mental andphysical wellbeing. Safe and effectivehypnotherapy techniques are used forWeight Loss, Quit Smoking, Hypno-Birthing, Pain

Management, Insomnia, StressManagement, Habit Breaking (teethgrinding) and Phobias (fear of flying, spiders etc), to mention but a few.Sessions are tailor made to each clientso that change is immediate and lasting. After your initial session you willreceive a CD for positive relaxation, foruse at home, to re-enforce thesuggestions you receive at the clinic.

So how does Hypnosis affect change inthe subconscious mind and create newpatterns of behaviour? Simply theHypnotherapist is aiming to help theclient perceive things in a different andmore helpful way - a reframe, intherapy jargon. Phobias and PanicAttacks are a good example. Whensomebody has a phobia, theirsubconscious mind has labelled anobject or situation as life-threatening. In Hypno-Therapy wereframe that object or situation in amore realistic way, as something that isinherently safe, or at least non-threatening.

To learn more about how I can help youimprove your overall health andwellbeing please feel free to contact meand make an appointment for your freeconsultation and positive relaxationsession. Then you can make up yourown mind on this wonderful therapy. Itwill be just the beginning of theintegrated approach to health andwellness provided at HypnoSolutions,Templemore ph. 086 838

An independent group of homeowners that decided to bandtogether and unite in a concertedeffort to protect all homes againstrepossession has launched anationwide campaign to establishgroups in every county in Irelandincluding Tipperary

The group, calling itself the Anti-Eviction Taskforce (AET) hasgrown in numbers at a tremendouspace. A high profile case inLimerick which has gainedinternational attention hashighlighted the issue. Father of five,Seamus Sherlock, who famouslychained himself outside ESBheadquarters in protest at theirtreatment of people who had falleninto arrears and subsequently set upthe organisation 'life after Debt' toassist others struggling with debt, received an eviction notice someweeks ago. He sent out a call forhelp and was inundated with offersof assistance from people willing toassist him and his children whohave barricaded themselves intotheir farm. Packages of food, livingessentials and even portacabins forvolunteers to sleep in have beendonated. A 24 hour security watchhas been set up on the farm toprevent the eviction.

On their website the AET state thatthey "will turn out in numbers tooffer a physical presence to homesunder immediate threat and willhave legal observers at eachattempted eviction to document, record, offer advice and act uponany issues that are considereddubious or illegal".

The AET work together with thePeople for Economic Freedom whoalso take direct action and campaignagainst evictions stating that theyare unconstitutional. They recentlyassisted an 80 year old woman inBlanchardstown arriving just afterthe Sheriff had left and a locksmithhad changed the locks.

Both groups update their activitieson Facebook and publish theircampaigns on YouTube

CounsellingBy Jim O’Shea

Depression(Continued from last issue)

Yet, I suppose depression has notplayed a big part in my life, althoughmy therapist once told me that I hada low level of ongoing anxiety in thecontext of my job as a schoolPrincipal. That did not surprise me,and I was glad to hear the words ‘lowlevel’! I’m not sure if this translatedinto a low level of chronic depression.I think it did, and an American clinicalpsychologist Joseph Carver is correctwhen he argues that ongoing stress islikely to lead to depression.Sometimes, in my own case I couldnot put my finger on why I felt a lowlevel of depression or anxiety. Butwhen I look back I realise that Ioverworked, carrying some remnantof grief within me, and gradually overthe years a sense of fatigue and lowenergy set in. But I worked hard hadpleasurable hobbies but eventually ranout of steam! Perhaps, I was merelyacting in accordance with Westernculture seeing depression as aweakness, and using what someresearchers have described asdescribed as greater willpower andgreater personal effort. I ran what Ithink was a very good school, wasindefatigable from morning to night, and managed 612 students, 44teachers, and other ancillary workerswith a good measure of efficiency, and greatly pleased most of theparents of the students.

But, I was always worried about everyconceivable aspect of the school, andabout how people viewed the school(and by implication myself).Sometimes I felt burdened. The factthat I could not escape (because ofDepartmental regulations), nor wouldI admit to wanting to escape, meantthat I stayed with the job for 12 years, and eventually had to retire in poorhealth. Nevertheless, I am proud tohave been entrusted with such andimportant responsibility, and to havemet so many great people during thecourse of my tenure there.

I had an angiogram in 2004, and thedoctor remarked on the amount ofadrenalin surrounding my heart. Ineffect I had one of the hidden physicalsymptoms of anxiety. At the sametime, most Principals will admit thatit is a difficult job, and many end upworn out by it. Of course, I spentsome of my time training as acounsellor at that stage, and thistraining is an emotionally difficultexperience. I suppose the combinationof this training and my job was toomuch for me.

To make matters worse I had takenthat job within two years of myyoungest child being killed in a roadaccident in 1990. That tragedy resultedin major depression for me. The bookthat I wrote with the help of my family(when a Child Dies. Footsteps of aGrieving Family) outlines some of thatdepression as a constant state ofunease, no peace, fear and terror, andliving in a different internal world. The absence of depression to me isbeing integrated in the ‘normal’ world. For a short time I only had a tentativeconnection with this world. When Iwas teaching I could hear my voice asif it were at a distance. There was nodesire to live; no enthusiasm forgetting up in the morning. The joy wasgone from my life. I would havepreferred to be dead than to carry thisempty feeling throughout the day. Iwas exhausted, dejected, gloomy, unhappy, and shrouded in pessimism.I could not shake off this overhangingcloud that blighted my life.Outwardly, however, I smiled andworked, and carried this pain with meinto my new job in 1992.

Ultimately that feeling left, and I amimmensely happy in my work as acounsellor and as a writer. Writing isalmost therapeutic to me. What alovely way to enter this later stage ofmy life. The lesson is that we canemerge from the most awful traumasand depression, take up the reins ofour lives and carry on.
