Evaluation Question 4.

Who would be the audience for your media

product?

My media product genre is social realism.Social realism is the genre that tries to

capture life as it really is and expresses real life problems for example, drug abuse and substance abuse, relationships and so forth.

What genre does my film belong to?

My film’s genre is social realism, this is because in the intro it is going on about real life situations for example a relationship break up. This is very important to social realism because it is expressing everyday problems with its audience.

Why is my film genre social realism?

My target audience for my media product is young adults. I chose this age group as my target audience because I feel they can relate to the themes and issues that occur in the film.

I found out when doing my target audience research that it was all people doing further education and who are much older and they have seen some successful social realism films such as ‘This is England’.

My Target Audience

Viewing media products online has become extremely popular over the years as technology has advanced and this has made it a lot easier for viewers to watch movies.

Streaming companies, such as, Netflix, LoveFilm and catch up TV such as BBC iPlayer and iTV player etc. They advertise themselves in all forms of media such as TV, radio and internet and many more forms of advertisement.

This form of advertisement is very popular with the younger viewers as it gives them the comfort of being able to watch it anywhere. Because of this it could give them a barrier to embrace the art of social realism films and won’t understand what they are trying to convey.

Netflix and LoveFilm advertise themselves as distributors of mainstream films but however still feature films such as fish tank and kes.

Online

Television plays a very important role in the distribution and exhibition of any media product and therefore affects the audience.

BBC 2 is an ‘alternative entertainment and information channel’. This channel aims for the older generation who are more interested in expanding their knowledge and cultivating different views from around the world. BBC 2 has shown in the past social realism films but also they show a mixture of mainstream films which suggests that the channel is trying to get a range of audiences.

Television

BBC 4 bands itself as “intelligent, mixed – genre content for the 21st century.” featuring a wide range of programmes including drama, documentaries, music, international film, original programmes, comedy and current affairs. This is an alternative to programmes on the mainstream TV channels.

BBC 4 is required by its licence to broadcast at least 100 hours of new arts and music programmes. 110 hours of new factual programmes and to premiere 20 international films per year.

BBC 4’s target audience is the more sophisticated and is educated on media terminology and who appreciate the arts. BBC 4 would be very ideal audience for my media product.

Television

Social Realism is a frequent genre of many of the BBC radio stations.

They understand that it is a ‘Kitchen Sink’ genre and that its audience are educated in more sophisticated media content and would then be an ideal audience for my product.

BBC Radio 3 Night waves dedicates to the voice to the arts, culture and media, where they are also interested in discussing world topics too – a common interest with social realism products.

Radio

Film magazines such as Empire or Total Film, mostly advertise mainstream films and are available for pickup in the mainstream cinemas or in newsagents.

The more sophisticated and often criticised as being harsh and “snobbish” magazine, Sight and Sound is available through subscription, which means that its audience is dedicated to film as they pay a monthly fee to have these magazines delivered to them and is only understandable to an educated audience. Sight and Sound is a much more appropriate audience since their audience is likely to understand my product far better than any other printed magazines.

Print – Magazines

In my primary research I found out that the age groups are ranged between older people and young adults. A pattern was emerged that the social realism films such as This is England and Kidulthood was chosen to be the most popular.

Both these films has relationship issues related sometime during the film which could attract these age groups to my media product.
