Who would be the audience for your media product?

CLASSIFICATION

I have decided to rate my film an 18. Looking at the BBFC, their first issue that makes a film a 18 is ‘very strong violence’. My film will contain scenes of very strong violence due to the whole plot being based around my characters experimentation on humans for pleasure. My title sequence contains scenes of strong violence with the use of blood, weapons and dead bodies however we see no violence occurring. This lets the audience know that there will be more graphic scenes of violence in the film. The other issues they talk about follow this theme of blood, gore and violence which again confirms my choice to make my film an 18 rating.

In my initial research into target audience I created a profile of my

ideal audience member.

I have kept in line to this as I would still say

that all the information I wrote applies to my film.

PROFILE OF TARGET AUDIENCE

As part of my initial research I also conducted a questionnaire which I sent out to students in

my school. I found that not many people replied to my email, however out of the ones

that I received back, the majority of them contained action/thriller as the main theme.

The responses with action/thriller genres were all male around the age of 17/18. There

seemed to be a pattern forming, where thriller films would be mixed with si-fi fantasy/action films. With The Dark Knight appearing twice

as the favourite films and many actors appearing in the franchise (Christian Bale and

Heath Ledger) and other franchises alike.

Christian Bale was listed as a favourite actor, who portrayed Patrick Bateman in American Psycho, the film my title sequence is heavily

based on. Many of the other actors listed have also starred in psychological thrillers such as Kevin Spacey, who starred in Seven, Woody

Harrelson and Orlando Bloom.

The thriller and drama genre seemed to be the most favourable genre so this confirmed my

choice to make my film a thriller.

QUESTIONNAIRES

POSITIVE AUDIENCE RESPONSES TO FINISHED

TITLE SEQUENCE

"it's cool! damn right i'd watch it it's like the north east version of

American Psycho.

The soundtrack and lighting were great,

your shots were sound and it's edited really

nicely"

"ahh that was mint!!! really like the bleak, grey tone of it all, it felt really cold and the music accentuated that. a

bit dark plus no Shia Labeouf. tut tut. BUT

OVERALL IT'S 1,000,000/10 SO YEAH"

" I was really into it. I really loved the connotations of the colour white; it usually represents something pure or innocent, which

alongside the guy getting dressed for a normal day, brushing his teeth etc, contrasted with the bodies being found. The cinematography

looked professional, especially during the point where he opens the cupboard and the body falls out, leaving only the upper part of her visible. We clearly see him step around it, showing that this guy is obviously unphased by the bodies and the murders he may have

committed. The minimalistic style of the opening scene presents to me as the audience numerous enigmas, as to why he is so unphased by the bodies and how he manages to get away with them being in his

house when he seemingly has a normal life? It definitely engages me as a fan of the thriller/mystery genre, and I would have loved to have

watched on."

" It's very good, I genuinely want to see more of it, looks great well edited and the 😁

camera work is really effective - I like the way the angles kind of

give the impression Kieran's character is a bit insane despite

the fact he looks so calm and collected. The music works well

too I also like that it's 👌

starring Shia LaBeouf hahaha"

I simply asked a handful of people my age to watch my final piece and tell me what they liked or disliked about it and whether or not they

would watch on it if was to be made into a full length film.

These responses were exactly the type of responses I was hoping for as they all addressed the particular things I included in order to

attract my audience.

The fact one person picked out that it was like a ‘north east version of American Psycho’ pleased me due to the fact that most of my

research and planning was based around that film.

After receiving these responses I now feel confident that my research into existing title sequences, along with storyboarding and location scouting was very useful in making the final product as I feel the

location provided the right atmosphere and lighting for my sinister yet formal character.

NEGATIVE AUDIENCE RESPONSES TO FINISHED TITLE

SEQUENCE

“The small font of the credits throughout

bugged me slightly”

“I did not like the use of tiny font for the credits as they are difficult to read.”

The only actual negative responses that I received were these. The small font of the credits was picked up on by two audience members, which leads me to think that I should have enlarged them a bit more so that they would be easy to read and stand out more clearly and boldly. However, my reason for having such small credits was to portray a more professional and subtle theme, which mirrored the disguise and discreetness of my character in open society.
