Principal’s Report Great news! Telstra Kids grant We are delighted to announce our success in applying for a $1,200 grant from Telstra. Telstra Kids knows the little things that can make a big difference to kids' lives, helping kids to play and learn.

Our Telstra Kids grant will be used for Robotic kits to support our Digital Learning and STEM program with robots and electronics. We will be purchasing 5 ‘Dash’ robots that can be controlled by apps on iPads to respond to voice, navigate objects, dance and sing.

We will also be purchasing a ‘Little Bits’ kit which is an invention toolbox that uses motors, wheels, lights, switches and buzzers to build creations from our students’ imaginations.

Huge thanks to Stewart Gardiner (Isabella 5/6A) from Telstra, for applying for the funding for us. We are very excited to share in the million dollars the Telstra Foundation provides each year to help kids across Australia to connect to their local communities.

Our teachers are very much looking forward to using these resources during the coming terms!

Grounds: Review of Traffic Management Policy The Staff and School Council are reviewing the school’s Traffic Management Plan and Policy. The purpose of the policy is to promote a safe teaching and learning environment for people who are operating within the school grounds.

While the Traffic Management Plan (TMP) is primarily designed to minimize the interaction between pedestrians and traffic flow, it is being reviewed to include consideration for access for staff to safely arrive and depart the school grounds in their cars.

Even while the review is underway we request that ONLY staff enter and depart the school grounds in their cars. In particular we ask that parents do NOT drive onto the school grounds.

It’s particularly hard when we have parents driving out of the driveway every morning when staff are arriving at school which they do from 7am onwards. It’s really dangerous and we want to prevent any accidents happening and keep everyone safe. Please be considerate and follow this request.

Congratulations Alyssa, Finalist in 2017 Higgins School Anzac Poetry Competition

Alyssa Borrirak (5/6J) has been announced as a finalist in the awards to be presented by Kelly O’Dwyer Federal member for Higgins. We look forward to hearing about Alyssia’s experience at the Awards Presentation and feel very proud of her writing and submitting her poem, which is included in this newsletter. Sustainability Certification On behalf of Glen Huntly Primary, Ms Kamila Kauze and I have received a congratulatory letter about GHPS’s progress with the ResourceSmart School Certification.

GHPS has successfully met all the newly added and extensive list of requirements for completing the Core and Biodiversity Modules to meet the “Discovery” Star level.

Becoming a 2 star school recognizes our school’s commitment to creating sustainable practices, infrastructure, integrated learning and taking action on climate change. Certification is valid for 4 years and this is our second round of validation.

National Walk to School Day Friday 19th May This is one way you can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more often. Remember, regular exercise, like walking with your child, not only helps

them (and you!) prevent chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes, it also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child how to behave safely around traffic.

House Rewards- Hume Once again, thank you to Mr John Tinetti and GPA for putting on the Term 1 House Rewards BBQ. This time it was the members of Hume House who were the recipients fortunate to receive a free sausage for their efforts in class. Good luck to the rest of the Houses this term who will be trying to win the next BBQ treat.

Respect for our School Uniform The uniform for GHPS looks absolutely fabulous on all students. When worn correctly, the colours are maroon, navy and white (polo shirt only). I ask that parents respectfully adhere to these 3 colours ONLY and do not send their children in other colours.

Primarily, there is a problem when other colours are interchanged, such as sending your child in black or grey leggings or any other colour which is not part of the school uniform. Please do not dress your child in other coloured long sleeved tops under the maroon or white. As an example, I have noted some students wearing pink and it does not make our uniform look cohesive and detracts from the smart look we value.

Please ensure that you adhere to our uniform code and only dress your child in the colours as stated. Parents have the added convenience of the uniform shop operational at school every Wednesday morning or completing the uniform order, which is available from the office.

Students not wearing the correct uniform colours are required to do so and I ask for all parents’ support in this matter. Please contact me if you require further advice or help with the uniform. Appreciation for our Volunteers: Give Happy, Live Happy I would like to acknowledge the wonderful work of all those who volunteer at GHPS. It is officially National Volunteer Week (NVW) from 8-14th May 2017 and this is a fitting time to recognise the valuable contribution made by all our school’s dedicated volunteers, who give up their time and use their expertise to provide our students with the very best learning and development opportunities through their generosity and enormous goodwill.

We join Australia is recognising the 28th National Volunteer Week and I know we have the most amazing volunteers here at GHPS.

Thank you to everyone who helps us in so many ways! We couldn’t do all we do for our students without you and we feel very lucky to have you. GHPS Staff always

recognises the wonderful help we have throughout the year with our annual thankyou morning tea in December.

Mother’s Day and Stall at GHPS Thank you to everyone who will support the Mothers’ Day Stall tomorrow Friday, 12th May and huge thanks to Donna Gardiner(Isabella 5/6A) and everyone on the wonderful GPA team who has worked to organise and source a great range of gifts and goodies. Thanks for setting up, baking or donating gifts for the stall and you can still sign up: http://signup.com/go/cQWRChR if you would like to help.

The stall will be on the West Site in the Art Room and I hope all the students enjoy this opportunity to personally select something nice to purchase and I know they really enjoy the time their class has at the stall.

To all our Mothers and Grandmothers in the school community, I wish you a wonderful day on Sunday and maybe a sleep- in!

School Council Report Term 2 already and after a couple of shortened weeks everything is back in full swing.

Due to the delayed timing of the Annual Reporting Meeting last term there was no School Council report from our March 27 meeting so firstly I would like to formally welcome our new School Council members Shan Jayaweera, Cassandra David-Shields and Emma Murnane. I would also like to thank departing Councillor Abhijit Gharde who tendered his resignation from council due to work commitments.

A summary of key items presented and discussed were;

School Council office bearers were nominated and endorsed being; President – Craig Matthews Vice President – Ross Donnan Treasurer – Nola Woo Secretary – Nicole Verginis

The Grade 5-6 camp to Lady Northcote from 22-24 March was an overwhelming success. I was reliably informed that this was “the best camp ever” by a number of the attendees. A big thank you to all staff who attend these camps and help make the children’s experience an enjoyable one.

Before and After Care run by Youth Leadership Victoria – the school is in the process of undertaking an exercise in ensuring that relevant policies of the program are in place for an ongoing happy and safe environment for the families utilising the service.

2017 fete planning is full steam ahead. The Finance Committee and School Council are being kept very well informed by the fete organising committee – thanks to Fiona Davey for attending our May meeting and providing a comprehensive update on planning progress. As always if there’s any way in which you or someone you know can contribute to the success of the fete please get in touch with a member of the fete team.

Car parking – this is an ongoing issue for the entire school community. As our roads get busier the temptation to “bend the rules” and park where parking should not occur is enticing. School Council would however like to remind everyone in the school community that the restrictions are in place for a very good reason – the safety of every member of our school community, especially the children. There are now a number of options being considered, together with a detailed Traffic Plan policy, to help eliminate the ability to bend those rules – more details to follow as we get closer to some final solutions.

With the successful roll out of the 40 new Chromebooks in Term 1 we now have an ICT ratio of 1 device per 2 students. For a school of our size/funding this is an excellent position. The school will be looking to retain and hopefully improve again on this from July onwards when some further new devices should be possible.

Capital Works 2017 –works currently scheduled to commence in Term 2 holidays and be completed by the

end of the Term 3 holidays. Due to funding constraints the decision was made to hold off on new carpeting for the area but hopefully by year end should be in a position to remedy this.

Term 3 social night – a number of ideas being considered so watch this space. Will be a very positive step forward having a pure social night activity for the school with focus being on fun and not fundraising.

If there is any issue any member of the school community would like to raise with School Council, please email [email protected] Craig Matthews School Council President

Student Council Hi everyone, my name is Yashvi. Today I’ll be telling you about what we discussed in our Student Councillors Meeting. We talked about Education Week, which is during week 6, and Grandparent Morning Tea which will be on Friday 26th May. We also created some invitations for our lovely Grandparents. Thank you. House Cross Country On Friday the 5th of May, Glen Huntly Primary School held their annual House Cross-Country event at Lords Reserve. Cross-Country is an individual endurance event, however it was great to see collective enthusiasm of all the competitors on the bright and sunny morning!

Congratulations to Batman who finished first overall, Igor accepted the winning trophy on House captain Uno’s behalf. The Spirit cup, which represents enthusiasm, sportsmanship and an overall positive attitude to sport, was awarded to Hume. Hume House captain Evelyn delightfully accepted the spirit cup to a roaring crowd. A second congratulations to the great individual performances on the day, you should feel very proud of yourself!

A BIG thank-you! to all the grade 3-6 teachers, for helping on the day, Mr. Jacobs, who helped organize the event, and the parents who came down to support their children and the school community.

ANZAC DAY I salute you, o soldier, as you went to the war, When I go past the poppies, my heart gets sore. You fought so bravely at the war front of Gallipolli Along with spirit of sacrifice, determination and a heart so friendly. As I remember you on 25th April, the Anzac Day My heart fills with pride, respect and full of gay. On this day I pray for your families and your beautiful soul. It’s because of you that we could achieve the freedom goal. Yashvi O 4K

“My meaning of Anzac Day.” This is my meaning of Anzac Day, I think of the soldiers every time, I will remind everybody about this special day, By creating this Anzac Day rhyme. Poppies and their seeds, The Mighty and the brave, They knew they would soon lay upon Something called death and a grave. They knew that they would lose their loved ones, Their kids, their parents, their wives, They had a feeling that inside the heart, They wouldn’t own two lives. They held their guns, breathing in, Ready for the war, The sight of guns shooting and smoke everywhere, Were the only things they saw. They started running, shooting their bullets, They were shooting each other’s hearts, The soldiers were shooting one by one, Just like the movement of darts. The horrible noise of people dying, Was the sound everybody had heard, Everybody could only hear the guns and the pain, Nobody had said a word. People crying and people sniffing, In front of their loved one’s grave, Listening to ‘The Last Post’ with poppies on their left, Their hearts as dark as a cave. All these soldiers were the bravest soldiers, We have ever met, So, let’s remember all soldiers and their brave hearts, By Saying “Lest We Forget.” Alyssa 5/6J
