Solemnity of Mary

Page 2 LITURGY AND WORSHIP

Octave of Christmas

The Church celebrates the birth of Jesus for eight days with the Christmas Octave, which means that each day within the octave is celebra ng the birth of Jesus. One day is not sufficient to celebrate the magnitude of our Savior’s birth so the Church celebrates Christmas day for eight days. It’s as if each day within the octave is Christmas day! That’s a good reason not to take your Christmas decora ons down the day a er Christmas because the Christmas season is just ge ng started!

The eighth day of the octave is the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God and this wonderfully coincides with the start of the New Year on January 1st. It is appropriate that we begin this New Year with our eyes fixed on Mary and Her Son that we may keep them in our heart as the source of our joy, hope and strength through-out the New Year.

The dogma of Mary’s Divine Motherhood was proclaimed at the Council of Ephesus in 431 with the special tle of Theotokos which means Mother of God or birth giver of God.

This dogma was declared not only to clarify Mary’s role in salva on history but also to pronounce that Jesus Christ is true God and true man. In His person are united both a divine nature and a human nature. The divinity of Jesus existed from all eternity but his humanity became united to his divinity at the Incarna on. The Son of the Blessed Virgin Mary has two natures, human and divine but a Mother is not the mother of nature but of a person, thus she is truly called Mother of God as her Son is truly God and truly Man. The council of Ephesus proclaimed the holy virgin is the Mother of God since she begot according to the flesh the Word of God made flesh.

This decision was further explained by the Council of Chalcedon (451) which says with regard to Mary's divine motherhood:"...bego en from the Father before the ages as regards his godhead, and in the last days, the same, because of us and because of our salva on bego en from the Virgin Mary, the Theotokos, as regards his manhood; one and the same Christ, Son, Lord, only-bego en..."

As we celebrate these mysteries of our faith at the start of the New Year, Pope Paul VI reminds us that "This celebra on, assigned to January 1st” is meant to commemorate the part played by Mary in this mystery of salva on. It is meant also to exalt the singular dignity which this mystery brings to the 'holy Mother . . . through whom we were found worthy . . . to receive the Author of life.' It is likewise a fi ng occasion for renewed adora on of the newborn Prince of Peace, for listening once more to the glad dings of the angels, and for imploring from God, through the Queen of Peace, the supreme gi of peace.” May Mary , the Mother of God, teach us to keep Jesus always in our Hearts!

The Rose Bowl Game is a special one this year as it puts our Pastor against the Principal! Next to the Phillies, Penn State is one of Fr. Robert’s favorite teams as he is from Pennsylvania and has been following the team since the 1960’s. Our school principal graduated from the University of Southern California (USC), and she is a diehard fan. Good luck to both!

Go Ni any Lions! Go Trojans!

30 Hour Famine
