Dear Parents, Thank you to all the parents who have been attending the PTCs that have been taking place on Campus. These are perfect opportunities to sit down and discuss your child’s progress with the class teacher and how they can continue to keep moving forward in their studies. For those parents who were unable to make one of these sessions you can still email or arrange to see a particular teacher by making an appointment with the relevant school secretary. Sixth Form Taster Day Last week our Year 11 students took part in a two day programme that started to equip them for life in the Sixth Form at Tenby. Students were able to listen and have discussions about subject and university choices, and meet our current senior prefect team to talk about life in the Sixth Form. Engage Over the past few weeks we have been experiencing some issues with our Engage system which has resulted in random messages being sent to parents. I do apologise for this and our Engage team are working to find a solution with the system designers. Surveys A final reminder to all parents who wish to take part in the school survey. We are delighted our students are able to explore Malaysia putting what they have learnt into practice in the real world. Next week I am away on Year 9 camp so my next message to parents will not be until the last Thursday of this term.

THE TENBY CHRISTMAS BAZAAR 2017

We had joyous Wednesday this week. Tenby-ians are simply a great team and together, we

made the Tenby Christmas Bazaar 2017 a memorable event.

All of us from the TIS SEP Parent’s Association, thank all of you from the bottom of our

hearts, for all the support given, and keep supporting us.

Special thanks to team of maintenance staff, who helped us behind the scenes; the school

cleaners who did an amazing job keeping the EPC spotless throughout the day; and the

security guards who kept the traffic flowing smoothly, whilst maintaining security around the

school.

Thank you, to the heads of Tenby Schools, for having faith in us and for allowing us to host

this 2nd Tenby Christmas Bazaar.

Water fountain:

We are really excited to have our state of

the art water fountain in the primary

servery! Children must have their own

water bottles in school to use with it and

refill as for hygiene reasons we do not want

little mouths touching the water nozzles.

Our prefects have worked hard to create

information posters detailing how to use the

new system which are on the trough itself

so please have a look when you are next in

school. Thank you for your support in this

matter.

Play time:

Due to a broken window I have banned

hard balls for the rest of this term. The

children will still have small balls, bean bags

and other play equipment to play with. I will

also introduce softer bigger balls for the

children and monitor accidents in due

course. Please talk to your children about

responsibility and making the right choices. Rules are only there to keep us safe.

Sharing challenges:

Ms Lily and I watched a wonderful Year 4 lesson where the children were writing

personifications using the Year 2 IPC challenges as stimuli. It was a lovely opportunity

for the children to see other children’s work and for us to celebrate the learning that is

going on in school and at home. I wonder how we will be using other challenges in

classrooms—watch this space!

Eco badges:

So far we have made nearly 1000 Ringgit for

charity. The Eco team have been selling the badges

that they designed and will decide where the

money goes and plan the whole transaction. We are

teaching children that they can make a difference if

they are passionate enough about something. We

also have supported the children through this

process and they are learning

about perseverance and

dedication.

Ban the plastic!

The primary canteen operator

was presented with a letter highlighting the plastic

issue that the world is now experiencing. The Eco warriors decided on banning the

plastic straw and replacing it with a paper one.

They also made a PowerPoint with some

powerful images and realised that if all primary

children used a plastic straw everyday in one

term of 60 school days—the total amount of

straws being thrown away is over 2000.

Together we can make a difference.

Every week we plan an assembly on something relevant. This week the plan was ‘adaptability’ and

this links to our

IPC personal

goals. A time to think

about how adaptable are we all in our

everyday lives.

Inter-house Physics Challenge 2017 On Wednesday, 8th November, 48 students from Year 9/10 (TIS) and Form 4 (SST) participated in the first Physics Challenge. The challenge is organised by Y13 Physics students (Andrew, Amir, Zheng Shen, Zheng Yi, Kiran). It was a wonderful opportunity and experience for our students to compete within our school environment. The competition tested the students’ aptitude on theory and practical that were beyond that of normal curriculum. This gave students the

opportunity to think, communicate and deduce ideas based on Physics. The most interesting part was the practical challenges that allowed students to apply their knowledge in engineering challenges.

The winner for this challenge will be announced on our school final assembly on Thursday 30th November.

I believe this is my first time leading an event and it

was nothing but thrilling yet challenging. The team

of organisers did a great job and everyone supported

each other. I'm happy with the turnout as we got

12 teams (when we expected 10) and the

competitiveness of the teams was heartening as that

let us know the teams were enjoying themselves too.

I liked the challenges that we picked, they involved a

range materials and skills, and each had a different

objective in mind. We did well to make the challenge

as fair as possible too. Or course there are always plenty of room for improvement.

I hope current KS4 Physics students will carry on the torch and make this challenge

an annual event for Tenby. I'd like to end by saying congratulations to all the teams

for pushing themselves to the limit to come

up with really creative and innovative designs

and we were thoroughly impressed. I'd also

like to thank everyone who participated and

helped make the challenge possible.

The physics challenge to put it short, was very fun! It was an enjoyable experience which was very interactive; something that we don't really get to do often. There was a really competitive atmosphere as all the different groups fought to earn points.

I really loved the spaghetti bridge challenge as it was fun to plan and build as it was to destroy with weights. I was actually quite surprised of how much those fragile sticks could actually hold. I do wish however we were given more time and each group had a glue gun. Though those two made the challenge even harder so we had to adapt. For the marble run experiment where we are only using paper and two metres of tape was interesting as so many of the groups had different takes on how to build it. There was even a group that build a ramp which lead to a dish which spun for quite some time. The last and final challenge

which our group deemed impossible with the materials provided was the egg drop test. A 15-20 metre drop to which an egg would certainly explode it's guts out, with the only thing stopping it being a metre of tape and 13 straws. Unfortunately I can't say no eggs were harmed during this challenge because all the eggs landed with a spectacular marble of egg yolk and white scattered everywhere.

Anyway that's my interpretation of what happened during the physics challenge, I wish all participants good luck. May the best team win. Nicolas Ho, 9B

Taster day last week was a mind-opening experience.

Lessons, timetable and overall schedule were incredibly planned

and organized.

I chose mainly science subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Physics,

Maths, Further maths, and English literature. Personally, I found it

the most helpful when all three science classes I've been in,

involved some practicals; which is a vital part in A levels that we

don't really experience during IGCSEs. That did gave me a clearer image of the assessment structure in A

levels. On the other hand, both math classes I've taken were introductions to the actual syllabus, which is a test

for interest in ourselves.

I do like the fact that options evening was held some time before taster day, which allows us to reconsider

about our subject choices. However, most of us were surprised when we received our subject timetable for

taster day, as we could merely recall the subjects we've chosen a few weeks back, plus our minds have

definitely changed especially after options evening. Thus the sudden changes in individual timetables to try out

the new subjects, instead of continuing with the subjects we were more comfortable with.

Of course, every course (IBDP/A levels...etc) has its own advantages, but to choose the "best" course is to

choose the one that is most beneficial and "best" for you. In these two days, despite still not having a 100%

clear image of my subject choices, I can promise that a vague idea has been built up steadily; and also that A

level is my choice, and so is Tenby.

Message from Mr Moss, Head of Year 11 It was great to see the Year 11s looking smart and mature

in their business office attire last week. As a group, they

looked very much at home! There were expectant faces

aplenty as they walked to the A Level ‘taster’ lessons they

had chosen to experience. Every student was given the

opportunity to select 6 A Level subjects for lessons to help

them to both further develop their understanding of each

subject and also refine their potential choices post-IGCSE.

The taster days were specifically tailored to each student’s

preferences, based upon feedback from the survey

conducted by Ms Lloyd, the school’s Careers Guidance

Counsellor.

Students were challenged to solve problems, explore

solutions, identify key issues and express and justify their

views across the range of subjects offered for Tenby Sixth

Form. A Levels allow students to more fully develop their

understanding, skills and knowledge for each subject

chosen. They provide the opportunity to explore concepts

and issues beyond that possible at IGCSE, in an

environment which at Tenby means students are

effectively guided and supported individually throughout

their A Level courses.

In addition to taster lessons, the days also incorporated time in the Sixth Form Common Room with current

Sixth Form students and an entertaining session playing a variety of sports for house points! I’m sure that the

Year 11 students have gained invaluable insight into not only studying A Levels, but also the experience of

being an A Level student here at Tenby.

Sex Education Talk On 14.11.2017, a team of officers from the Federation of Reproductive Health Association Malaysia came to give a talk to our Standard 4 to Form 4 students with the aim of bringing an awareness about their sexual and reproductive health. Students learned about the changes in their body as they grow.

Some primary school students were shy and uneasy when the speaker, Pn Rabiah, first introduced the changes in the body with the aid of diagrams. However, the speaker was quick to put the students at ease with her light-hearted talk and humour. Students participated actively and learned about the differences between sex and gender, a little on the equality and stereotyping of genders.

For secondary, the speaker focused her discussion on rights, respect and

responsibility. Students were exposed to a holistic perspective, involving the physical, emotional, social, and ethical aspects of sexuality. The talk also inculcated values and built competencies in students so that they can become individuals and citizens of good character that will contribute to their communities. We hope that this exposure will help to build the foundation for respectful, responsible and caring relationships through fostering positive attitudes towards self and others.

Primary Tenby Great Challenges 2017 On Tuesday 07.11.2017, Primary SST kids were involved in the Great Challenges Day which was held at school basketball court and classroom from 7.50am. until 2.20pm. The challenges started with a series of fun and enjoyable physical activities. After break session was filled with exciting activities such as solving puzzle, scavenger hunt and blindfold search. They were all conducted by the SST Primary teachers and assisted by the Form 3 students. Students worked collaboratively to accomplish the tasks given to them. It was really a fun-filled and excited day for all the teachers and students.

Secondary Tenby Great Challenges 2017 On Thursday 09.11.2017, SST secondary students had their annual Great Challenges Day. Students experienced physical, mind and teamwork challenges while completing the tasks given. Three main objectives of the challenges are: to encourage creativities through fun activities; to provide participation opportunities to compete between the houses; and to encourage students to work as a team. The physical challenges is the first session in the morning. Students enjoyed playing Bola Tampi, Score Goal, Poison Ball and Football in Pair which build their leadership skills, communication skills, and strategizing skills in order to finish the task and win the games. The excitement of the day ended with a series of fun and creative mind challenges which include general knowledge quiz, Pantun creation and many more. The Form 4 students have been great helpers during the challenges day. They were highly committed in making sure the events run smoothly and successfully. This has also provided them an experience in event management and leadership responsibilities.

Mandarin Workshop On 28.10.2017, 20 teachers from all other Tenby campuses participated in the Mandarin

Workshop organised in Tenby SEP. The aims of the workshop is to promote and enhance the

sharing of teaching experiences and resources between Tenby Schools Mandarin teachers.

Senior teacher Mdm Lee Bee Kian from SMK Bandar Sri Damansara had a meaningful

sharing session on PT3 and SPM examinations format and marking. Her rich experiences in

teaching and learning Mandarin really benefits all the teachers who have attended the

workshop. Ms. Yeoh Yee Ling (TIS Penang) and Ms.Lao Siong Siong (TIS Miri) demonstrated

a few effective teaching strategies in class. Through the hands-on activities, teachers had

meaningful forum sharing good ideas in teaching design, methods and pedagogy. Mdm Tan

Thue Lin (SST SEP) then shared about HSK & YCT syllabus and exam format, followed by

presentation by Mdm Lee Fun Nee (SST Miri) who talked about the usage of ICT in the

teaching of Mandarin.

This workshop has successfully promoted the collaboration and sharing of teaching resources

amongst all Mandarin teachers from Tenby schools in Malaysia for better and standardised

education quality.
