SRI TENBY PRIMARY

Message from Head of Sri Tenby Schools

By S.H. Cheah

We are into the 8th week since the opening of the

school term. We had two breaks that were very close

and we are now heading full steam ahead into the

second part of the school term. I am sure there will be

much learning as the teachers cover the curriculum as

scheduled in the lessons plans.

Parenting can be a tough and thankless job at this time.

Often we say that we need to be aware of everything

that is going on in our children’s lives. However

sometimes our lack of awareness can be costly to our

children. To be “aware” parents and maintain harmony

within the family, we need to have a proper set of

family rules or expectations that are based on family

values. For example if we expect our children to

maintain good results at school, we need to have

preventative rules such as completing daily homework,

Best Class for the Month February 2017.

Congratulations to the students who have made their

class to best for the month. Keep it up.

limits on screen time, balance of sporting and social

activities with study time. For our part. we need to

maintain communication with teachers to monitor

progress and concerns rather than wait till the end of

the term. If we set rules and create a structure that

assists children along the way, it maximises their

chances to success. As parents, it allows us to be

involved so we can be aware of problems early and

resolve them before they become overwhelming.

Thus I look forward to working in tandem with parents

and teachers for the best of all the children under our

care.

Winners of the Tanglung Competition.

The three winners are Harinee Pillai a/o Thinakaran

(Tahun 4) Sofea Ain Nanne (Tahun 3) and Shawn Tan

(Tahun 2). All of them received RM20 book vouchers.

We would like to thank the Tenby Student Council for

sponsoring the competition.

Choral Speaking

The Form 2 students paid tribute to all the STSS

teachers in an interesting and unconventional manner

– through choral speaking! They praised, teased,

picked out funny and commendable characteristics of

teachers and presented all these in voices full of

expression, coupled with meaningful gestures and

‘special effects’.

They had the school entertained. There was laughter

and fun for everyone – performers and audience alike.

As for the teachers – all are definitely so proud that

they are appreciated and that the students have so

much talent in putting together such a cool act!

SCIENCE CLUB

Why is the sky blue? How is the rainbow formed?

All the questions are answered at the SCIENCE CLUB!

It is a new club and members have made interesting

discoveries on how science impacts everyday life- from

food, energy, medicine, transportation to leisure

activities!

One of the main objectives of the Science Club is to

cultivate the students’ interest in science. Through the

activities of the Science Club students learn about

different fields of Science. They use the Scientific

Method to design and carry out experiments. The

method helps to minimise experimental errors and bias,

and increase accuracy of results.

Activities are varied but focus is on research work.

Students can choose topics from Biology, Chemistry or

Physics for their field research, and work is done within

a given time frame. The students research their topics

from the internet, books, magazines or interview

sessions. Following that students discuss and decide

on the best method to present their findings.

There are other activities that are fun and others that

open a world of wonder through science.

Members are from both STSS and TISS

MSSPP UNITY FOOTBALL

Our students took part in the MSSPP Unity Football

Competition, held at the University Sains Malaysia, on

18th February. Although it was on a Saturday, many

students turned up to support our teams. It was a

‘knock out system’. We fielded an Under 15 and an

Under 18 team.

It was good experience for the students as the

competition was open to all secondary schools from

Penang state. The teams did not win medals but they

were richer for the experience and good

sportsmanship!

MSSPP BADMINTON TOURNAMENT

STSS students also participated in the MSSPP

Badminton Tournament. It was based on a ‘knock out’

system. Students took part in the Under 15 and Under

18 categories (singles). Our representative, Lee Ming

Jian who was in the Under 15 category managed to

get through to the first two rounds before he conceded

defeat to a more experienced opponent, who was also

the second seed in the tournament.

Ming Jian’s won the hearts of the supporters for his

fighting spirit in trying to retrieve shots.

It has been a very busy few weeks, with our children

taking part in MSSPP competitions for the first time.

Well done to Tommy, Marcus and Lashania from year

Football team also have been breaking records as the

ad an amazing 11-1 victory over Straits International

and the Player of the match was Robin for his excellent

skills and team work.

As part of international mindedness and Community

we look forward to building on these connections over

the coming years.

We are now all preparing for an exciting Book Week

Japanese School Visit

Year 2 & 3 had a fantastic day out on Monday when

they visited Penang Japanese School. The children

made new friends, played traditional Japanese games

before ending the morning with a song both in

Japanese and English. They were fantastic hosts and

our children were excellent representatives for our

school.

We look forward to next year when we shall be inviting

Penang Japanese School to spend a day at TIPS.

Our children are currently writing Thank You letters to

their new friends.

Upon arrival the children were greeted by the

friendly Principal.

Great to see our year 10—13 students engaging in

conversation about their futures at the university fair

held at Tenby on Tuesday this week. Students had the

opportunity to research the visiting universities and

prepare questions during their tutor time prior to the

fair—maximising their time to find out about courses,

subjects and career pathways on offer. We next fair we

host is in conjunction with the British Council in March.

More details to follow.

As always, it is a busy half term in the lead up to the

exam season so do ensure you consult the school

calendar to make sure you don’t miss out on the

various events and face-to-face communication

opportunities coming up. Year 9 will be making their

option choices, morning parent forums, reports are due

out and parents evenings for year 7—10 are all

scheduled over the next few weeks.

KEY STAGE 5

University Offers

As the mock exam season descends upon our Year

12’s and 13’s we are also reminded of the exciting

futures that await our Year 13’s. I was thrilled to hear

the news that Chee Chin has received an offer to read

Engineering at Monash University, Australia. Also

congratulations to Elise who has received offers to

read Computer Science from two UK Russell Group

universities; Warwick and Birmingham and two further

offers from The University of Reading and Teeside.

In assembly just recently I shared with students the

importance and how to keep safe online, in conjunction

with the www.saferinternetday.org.uk campaign. Take

a look at the website to help promote safety online with

your child.

Hope to see you on Saturday at our “Clean Up the

Beach” event down at Tanjong Bungah. Well done to

the Student Leadership Council for organising and

rallying up such a positive interest!

Thank you for your continued support.

KEY STAGE 3

By Miss Carolyn

Penang being the Island of celebrations has now seen

the end of Chinese New Year, Thaipusam and

Valentine’s Day. Celebration is an important part of

Tenby in celebrating the continued successes of the

students. Three of the Year 9 students recently

represented Tenby and recently competed in the

MSSPP Swimming Championship. The Under 13

basketball team played against Uplands and amazed

everyone with their score of 45-4 win. However, it must

be remembered that it is often the small successes on

a daily basis which lead to the larger successes:

Setting ourselves goals and measuring our

achievement against our personal best definitely leads

us on the path to success.

Netball PSAC League U16 Tenby vs Straits International (16th

January 2017) Tenby had scored 31 points against Straits’ score of 4. Although we achieved victory, it was good game with a friendly rival, and it gave us a good opportunity to pinpoint on areas where we can further improve our game. Go Tenby Tigers! #tenbytigersroar #comebackstronger.

Netball PSAC League U16 Tenby vs POWISS (25th

January 2017) POWIIS won 15 points and Tenby right around the corner with 13 points- 2 points short! The match, just like any other was one to remember and one to learn from! Playing against POWIIS Panthers not only opened our eyes to new tactics, it had also prepared our U16 team physically and mentally for the upcoming South East Asia Netball Tournament that will be held in Singapore, March of 2017.#tenbytigersroar #comebackstronger.

PSAC Athletics Secondary Meet @ USM (3rd

February 2017) Tigers on the Fast Track! Tigers hit the history books once again with a victorious debut for the PSAC Athletics Track meet. A big shout out to all 18 warriors of TISS and STSS who braved their way competing against ferocious and more experienced opponents for the U15 and U18 boys and girls category. We are proud of our performance. Sometimes it's not about the winning, it's the spirit of sportsman and willingness to go against the odds. Tenby Tigers certainly proved that today! Do check complete results on the PE notice boards. Thank you PE team for the arrangements and support!#tenbytigersroar #comebackstronger.

What a splendid way to kick start the Basketball U13PSAC Basketball League yesterday. Tenby hosted the match and went head on with the mighty Lions of Uplands.
