From the Campus Principal Jane Kuok

Dear Parents and Tenby Community,

The end of term has finally arrived! This week we celebrated Christmas with the community and it was the first time that we have seen the majority of students dressed in theme. It was also the first time that there was an overwhelming show of support from parents for a festival assembly - we ran out of chairs! It was very heart warming to see our Vision of “A United World At Peace – Through Education” coming through. Thank you so much for being part of our community. You will see pictures of the Assembly at the end of my message.

Looking forward into next year and the new term, there are a few changes to take note of.

Movement of the SurauThe Surau will be relocated to two places – Block D, Level 2 (for students) and the front of the Administration Block next to the Bookshop (for visitors). This is to facilitate a larger Meeting Room. The Medical Room will be moved to where the current Surau is.

Movement of School Office for Sekolah TenbyFrom January, the Sekolah Tenby Office will be located with the TIS Secondary Office in Block C on the First Floor.

Revision of School Day TimingsThe length of the School day will remain unchanged, however, the lesson times, break and lunch times have been revised to allow for more focused opportunities to develop the pastoral side of school life. The changes will allow for better use of integrated assemblies, lunch times, house meetings and designated quality tutor times for secondary students. The break and lunch timings for each section of the school will be as follows:

Please note that the TIS Secondary, there will not be a registration period as lessons will start immediately at 07:45hrs where students will be registered within their first lesson. More details later in the TIS Secondary section of the Newsletter.

We encourage all students to have their breakfast before they arrive to school as break time will only allow time for a quick snack.

Provisional TIS timetables showing specialist lessons will be uploaded to the ENGAGE Parent Portal before the start of term and all children will get a copy of their timetable for their Student Planner when they return in January.

Farewell to Cohort 12The A Level Cohort 12 students celebrated their graduation last week with a Prom that was organised by Cohort 13. It was a lovely event that showcased their memories of their learning journey with the School. It was such a pleasure to witness their successes and we wish them all the best in the future. We hope that they will keep in touch with the school and share updates of their achievements with us.

May we take this opportunity to thank students, parents and staff for their continued support of the School. Merry Christmas to those who will celebrate and Happy New Year to all!

We look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday 3rd January, 2017. Happy holidays!

Standard 6 Prom Night 2016 On 25th November 2016, the Standard 6 students had their long-awaited

Prom Night which was held to end their primary school journey. The

theme of the night was ‘Hawaiian Luau’. The night began with the MC’s,

Clarene and Harith inviting a group of boys to bring in their homemade

volcano into the auditorium. After that, Miss Jane Kuok, Mr Choong and

Cik Zainap were invited to erupt the volcano to mark the official opening.

Next, a group of talented girls performed a graceful traditional Hawaiian

dance which was then followed by an inspirational speech by Jasmine,

the student representative.

While listening to an amazing piano piece, ‘Fur Elise’ performed by Joel,

the guests enjoyed the scrumptious meal. It was then followed by a

harmonic performance by “The Dreamers”, who showed off their

powerful voices and musical talents. After that, the “Old Men Grooving”

presented an entertaining and splendid dance which drew everyone’s

attention.

Later on, Mr Teoh and Miss Ha hosted an extremely fun game of LIMBO.

The students were challenged to go under a stick which was placed on

three different levels. “The Faders” later entertained the crowd with a

breath-taking and stunning performance which consisted of two

beautiful singers and two exquisite dancers. “The Pop Group” also

performed an awesome dance which blew the crowd away.

During the Prize Giving Ceremony, the top scorers in the UPSR exam

were awarded with gifts. Congratulations to Zhi Qing and Harith for

being crowned the Prom Prince and Prom Princess this year as well as the

Limbo team for scoring the first place in the Post-UPSR activities.

Sekolah Tenby’s School Trip To Penang Escape Park On the 19th of November 2016, the Standard 6, Form 2, Form 3 and Form 4 students from Sekolah Tenby went on a trip to Escape Adventure Park in Penang. The students gathered at the foyer at 6:15. Before we left, the students were divided into two groups to enter the bus.

We departed on our journey at 6:30 in the morning. After about 2 hours, we arrived at the Penang Bridge and we were amazed by the beautiful view of the sea.

We reached at the Escape Park at around 9:45 in the morning. The students were excited as there was many activities to do at the park. We then proceeded to the party room and ate breakfast while we were briefed about the rules, regulations and safety procedures applied there.

After our breakfast, we, students then separated into different groups with our friends and made our way to the different activities, rides and attractions. The concept of the park is to have fun in the outdoors, surrounded by nature so there were rides like Atan’s Leap which is similar to a bungee jump and the Gecko Tower where we had to climb up a tower using the holes and protrusions built on the tower wall. Other activities available were the Monkey Business, Flying Kite and the Flying Lemur which is Asia’s longest zip line ride according to Escape Park’s website.

Left to Right: Gecko Tower, Monkey Business, Atan’s Leap

We had a break at one in the afternoon for lunch but most students quickly ate and went back out to play. The day flew by so quickly and soon we had to gather back at the party

room at 4:15 in the afternoon to head back to school.

Most of us went home with smiles on our faces knowing that we had fun today. On the journey back to school, there were accidents on the road which caused a massive traffic jam thus causing us to arrive back late at school. However, that did not dampen our spirits as it had been an eventful day.

In conclusion, this trip has been a fun experience for both the students and the teachers. We hope that we can visit Escape Adventure Park again in the future.

Sekolah Tenby’s End-of-Year Awards Assembly

Sekolah Tenby Ipoh held its final assembly for the year on Monday, November 28th in the school auditorium. As has been tradition, this end-of-year assembly celebrates the overall achievements of Sekolah Tenby students, not just in academia but also in sports and other extra-curricular activities undertaken throughout the year. The assembly was attended by both the primary and secondary sections of Sekolah Tenby, teachers and parents/guardians.

Certificates were given out to top-scoring students in the core subjects of Bahasa Melayu, English, Mathematics and Science (or Sejarah/History for the fourth formers who have Science elective classes instead of a common one). In a number of classes, there was a handful of particularly high-performing students who swept two or three of the subject awards. Standard 2’s Nesha Gan, however, took the cake, winning top spot in all four subjects for her year group!

Merit certificates were also handed out to students who had represented the school in sports events and excelled in them this year. Among those recognized were footballers, squash players and chess players, from both the primary and secondary schools. Miscellaneous certificates went to those who had participated in the Model United Nations (MUN) conference, the Maths Olympiad and the school’s own (Safe Steps) Road Safety Campaign. Standard 6 school prefects also received appreciation certificates for having completed their duration of service for the primary school.

Certificate giving was interspersed with artistic performances from our wide pool of very talented students. Standard 4E – made up of Aidan, Lok Hin, Elakkiyan, Gurrleen, Hawena, Healesya, Ve Ze, Khuhan, Zhen Xi, Jie Han, Mia Jassina, Lit Ean, Tharneswaran, Zi Xin, Zareen Hannah and Tvisha Darshini – performed choral speaking under the tutelage of Ms Preethy. Standard 1 students – Ahmad Arris Naufal, Alfred Six, Soo Hoe Yin, Mamtej Kaur and Keanna Sebastian – played two nursery rhymes on the hand bells under the guidance of Encik Aizat. Form 2 students, Kyriea Idris and Adam Daniell sang a popular song, accompanied by Muhd Alif

Daniel on the guitar. Finally, Cheong Zhe Mien from Form 4 Arts performed solo on the piano, playing a contemporary piece of music.

The assembly concluded with students and teachers being recognized for not having missed a single day of school or work the entire year. Teachers receiving the loudest and most-deserved cheers were senior staff members – Mr Chong PH, Mr Lee SM, Mr Chin SW, Cik Maznah, Cik Zainap and Mdm Pang YY – who proved with 100% attendance, just how much they love their jobs!

As a final note, Sekolah Tenby Ipoh would like to acknowledge the hard work and effort put in by students, teachers and supporting staff members throughout this academic year. Thank you all and Happy Holidays!

News from Tenby Early Years Centre Ipoh

Christmas Assembly, 28th November 2016

We had a joyful assembly in our school hall with performances by students with Christmas songs and dance. The students, staff and parents all came dressed in Christmas colours to celebrate this event. The overwhelming support by the parents is commendable. In this season of giving and sharing, our children made some of the kids from Soroptimist International Ipoh wish come true. These are the under privileged children who are deprived of the things needed in life. The appearance of ‘Santa Claus’ made the occasion merrier. The assembly ended with the presentation of gifts for the under privileaged children contributed by our students.

Book Exchange Corner Dear Parents/Guardians,

The Primary Student Council would like to set up a Book Exchange Corner to encourage the love for reading.

Children will be able to take out a book to read during break times or bring it home. All we ask is that books taken out to be returned to the shelves when they have finished reading so that other children can have the opportunity to enjoy the book as well.

This is how you can help us. We are looking for pre-loved books or comics that are age-appropriate for Primary children.

If you have any books or comics suitable for us, please drop them at the Primary Office. Thank you very much for your help.

NEWS FROM TENBY INTERNATIONAL SECONDARY JANUARY TIMETABLE

From January, the timetable for the International Secondary School will move to an 8 period day. This change will provide us with greater flexibility on the timetable and will also allow us to provide a greater level of tutorial support to all students via both dedicated tutorial times with both individual and group mentoring, guidance and counselling, and a structured pastoral programme. We will also have a dedicated assembly period that will allow us to explore pastoral issues at both a year group and whole school level.

Some minor changes to staff and student allocations will be introduced at the start of January, and after the results of the Mock examinations (Years 10 – 13). Any change will be the result of careful consideration and will be deemed to be in the best interests of the students.

New timetables will be available through the Engage Parent Portal before the start of term.

The new timings will be as follows:

Period 1 07:45hrs

Period 2 08:30hrs

Period 3 09:15hrs

Break 10:00hrs

Period 4 10:20hrs

Period 5 11:05hrs

Period 6 11:50hrs

Lunch 12:35hrs Home Time/CCAs on a Friday is 12:30hrs

Period 7 13:30hrs

Period 8 14:15hrs

Home Time/CCAs 15:00hrs

Please note that 07:45hrs is the start of the first lesson of the day. Students are registered at the start of this period. All students in the International Secondary School are therefore expected to be in school no later than 07:40hrs and must be in their classroom ready to start at 07:45hrs. Students will be marked late if they arrive after 07:50hrs which will be considered an unauthorised absence. Late arrivals, as with absence, needs to be accompanied by a note from parents/guardians. This could be via the Student Planner. Students in the Sixth Form who do not have a lesson Period 1 are expected to register with the Secondary School office at 07:45hrs, failure to do so will result in an absence being recorded but more importantly poses a risk in the case of a building evacuation.

Additionally, it is important that all students eat breakfast prior to coming to school. The morning break will be 20 minutes, sufficient time for the stretching of legs and consuming of light snacks, but not sufficient for a large breakfast. Lunch will be longer. This will allow students to have plenty of time to eat lunch and also participate in a variety of lunch time CCAs and House Activities. Breakfast is an important meal of the day as it provides students with the energy required to concentrate and learn more effectively during the first few periods prior to the morning break.

Your support with this significant change is appreciated

MOCK EXAMINATIONS

Mock Examinations for Years 10 to 13 are scheduled from the 3rd to 12th January. The timetables and examination topics have been given to students, are posted on the Edmodo site, have been emailed to all parents and are available on the Parent Portal.

3. Students in Years 11 to 13 will be provided with a supervised study space whenever they are not in an examination. They are expected to bring to school material for independent study. Students, in the study rooms, will be permitted to listen, independently, to music on their smart phones, iPods or lap tops. (Headphones must be worn). Students may bring these at their own risk. Any use of phones, ipods or lap tops to access inappropriate sites, social media, emails, text messages or use the phone application, will result in confiscation for the remainder of the day.

f) Having unauthorised material in the examination is breaking the rules, even if you do not intend to use it. If you have any unauthorised material you may be penalised or disqualified.

g) You must not talk to, attempt to communicate with or disturb other candidates once you have entered the examination room.

Page 24: TENBY SCHOOLS IPOH - tenby.edu.my · dance which was then followed by an inspirational speech by Jasmine, ... longest zip line ride according to Escape Park’s website. Left to Right:

h) You must follow the instructions of the invigilator. i) If you are in any doubt speak to the invigilator. j) You must leave the question paper, your answer book or answer paper, rough work and

any other (used or unused) materials in the examination room.

10. Students will not be permitted to leave the examination room before the designated time of the examination is up. Students are expected to manage their time effectively and must ensure that they read the question paper carefully and proof read their answers thoroughly.

Good Luck

Model United Nations (MUN) CCA NEWS

Last weekend saw our most recent venture to Kuala Lumpur to attend the Model United Nations (MUN) conference at Taylor’s College. From Friday to Sunday our delegates gave it their very best effort to represent their chosen countries in the various different councils. In particular, it was great to see so many of our youngest secondary school pupils take part in MUN for the first time and amongst students much older than themselves.

This convinced me that this important extra-curricular activity has a bright future in Tenby Ipoh and that the pupils will gain in confidence and ability at this early introduction to a MUN conference.

Well done to our Year 10 student Tan Sean-Ferng who walked away with the accolade of best delegate for his work within the International Press Gallery. Special recognition should also be given

to Natalie Chan and Isaac David from Year 11 who prepared our pupils so thoroughly for the conference and lead them so admirably during the entire event.

Hopefully in the fast approaching new calendar year, we will see the Model United Nations CCA grow from strength-to-strength and continue to break new grounds here at the school. A last thank you to Ms Mangales and Mr Sandran for helping to make our weekend away from Ipoh such an enjoyable success.

News from…… TENBY SCHOOLS IPOH INTERACT CLUB

Dateline: 29th December 2016

On 24th November 2016, seven members of the Tenby Ipoh Interact Club journeyed to Negeri Sembilan to be a part of this year’s District Interact Conference (DIC). With a total of 395 Interactors and 42 Interact Clubs participating from all over Malaysia, the seven of us stayed for 4 days & 3 nights in PLKN Kem Seri Perkasa Mantin. Upon arrival, the boys and girls settled into their separate dorms before meeting at the main hall. We were separated into 4 different groups named: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie & Delta. We began with an ice-breaking session where we had to create a powerful chant that can be cheered by the rest of the group. After dinner, the evening consisted of talks by guest speakers; Past Assistant Governor Sesuratnam led an informative talk about the roles and goals of Interactors, followed by Rotaract Neela Murasu who introduced and encouraged Interactors to join Rotaract after secondary studies. The last speaker of the night, District Governor Nominee Dr. Baskaran, gave Interactors an insight into the history of Rotary. Did you know the United Nations was founded by Rotarians? The first night ended with our very own President Praenaay Bhardwaj leading a sing-along to Michael Jackson’s “We Are The World”. Awaking at 5.30 am seemed daunting at first but after the half hour long Zumba exercise, it was enough to wake all the groggy Interactors. Friday saw the much-awaited arrival of Yang Amat Mulia Tunku Ali Redhauddin Muhriz and his brother to deliver their key note addresses. This was followed by the memorable Dato Dr. Siva Ananthan; although quite the comedian, he gave an inspirational speech to motivate Interactors to start fulfilling their goals together as a club. The afternoon was spent in the sweltering heat of Negeri Sembilan, as the Interactors went jungle trekking for 3 hours. After dinner, we welcomed guest speaker Joyce Lai, who showed the audience her journey to success named “Journey Joyce” and how to survive in the professional world. Saturday marked the third day of DIC 2016. Surprisingly, birthday songs were present throughout the day as 26th November was the birthday of Past President Kunasantar and 3 other Interactors. After another morning session of Zumba, Mr. Raja Singham of Brickfields Asia College shared with us the ups and downs of his path to success. Puan Kartina Binti Hasim of Tenaga Nasional Berhad also shared some thought provoking information about renewable energy, efficiency and conservation through a colourful presentation. Next was Mr. Paul Jambunathan, a clinical psychologist and lecturer, who informed us about mental health awareness and maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Dr. Mohamed Yunus engaged all the Interactors in group activities, while citing the significance of logical thinking. Lastly, the lively and unforgettable Past Assistant Governor Gerard Lazarus who is also a criminal lawyer, gave an interactive talk about Internet scamming, making wise decisions and maturing mentalities. The evening consisted of a talent show, where each group performed dances, songs and plays. By nightfall, the dancefloor was open and Interactors danced the night away until it ended with a spectacular of show of fireworks. On the final day we heard from two speakers: Mr. Rajandran Pekchan who spoke about preparing for jobs in the future and Past District Governor Kirenjit Kaur who shared with us her passion towards Polio awareness and eradicating the disease permanently. After lunch, it was time to depart PLKN Mantin; a flurry of photos with other Interact Clubs and after promises to keep in touch in the future, we left with lifelong memories and sound advice from all the speakers.

Christmas Charity Convoy for the Orang Asli

Sixth Formers support Tenby Schools Charity Drive

Tenby Schools Ipoh has channeled this season’s food donations to three Orang Asli villages on the Simpang Pulai-Cameron Highlands road; Kampong Perghom, Kampung Sinju and Kampung Pawong. The first batch of supplies has been sent to Kampung Perghom through the kind help of Mr Alex Chuah who visits these villages on a regular basis. We wish to thank all our parents and students who have responded so generously to this call to help the Orang Asli as part of our Christmas Charity Convoy.

A Season of Sad Farewells

Sixth Formers bid farewell to Cohort 12

Graduation Night Cohort 12 at the Legendary Club,Ipoh

It was a momentous occasion, lit up by blinking golden lights, a dazzling chandelier and festive balloons. The guests as well as the atmosphere that night lived up to the “Classic” theme as they came in dapper suits and elegant dresses. The members of Cohort 12 seemed nervous but also excited to be finally moving on to a new chapter in their lives. Their teachers who sat in the audience swelled with pride as they watched their students who had once been the centre of their lives say “thank you” and “goodbye” one final time.

It must have been a bittersweet feeling for them as they watched the video of photo collages of their memorable times together as “Tenbyians”, as a cohort and as friends. Many heartwarming and encouraging words were shared with the graduands by Ms. Jane Kuok, our Campus Principal and Mr Richard Davidson, our Head of International Secondary.

Ms. Kuok cited research findings by “TIME” magazine on the strengths and weaknesses of the millennials, an age bracket that includes Cohort 12. She praised them for being internet and IT- savvy but reminded them that the world values people who are not stuck to their electronic devices; the world needs people who are open and warm towards others. “Getting a high salary is not your birthright. Within a few weeks in the working world, you will realize that the world does not owe you a living,” she rightly pointed out, citing the advice given by Bill Gates.

Mr Richard Davidson among other points of advice cited his self-adapted version of the poem “Take Time”. In the hustle and bustle of the coming years, he asked the graduands to take time for the things that really matter in life: “Take time to laugh It is the music of the soul; Take time to play It is the secret of youth; Take time to think It is the path to wisdom; Take time to read It is the way to knowledge.”

It was also a night when the true fraternal spirit of the Sixth Form was supremely in evidence. All the elaborate preparations from the booking of the venue, its decorations, the collection of tickets, revenue, the music and the flow of mementos were expertly managed by the Cohort 13 students led by Emily Wong, the incoming President of the Sixth Form Council. Also worthy of high praise were the Cohort 14 students who helped boost the number of attendees. “Cohort 14 were the livewires behind the entertainment menu for the evening. They truly livened up the event with their superb dances and songs,” commented Tang Chi Hoe, outgoing Vice President of the Sixth Form Council. ”Thank you, mates, for your spirit and camaraderie.” Among the highlights of the evening were the Excellence Awards.
