we are grateful for our past and hopeful in our future
When I remember how Godcreated this world of ours, how he looked at it with nothing but loveand said, “It’s good. It’s very good.”When I recall how he entrusted uswith care for what he made—I am grateful for our pastand hopeful in our future.
When I remember stories Jesus toldthat painted in bold strokesthe hand and heart of God—the shepherd searching for the stray, the parent longing for the prodigal’s return, the teacher washing his students’ feet—I am grateful for our pastand hopeful in our future.
When I remember the Spirit gift he left uswho reminds us should we forget, who inspires us to the necessary good, who helps us find the risen Christ around us,who gives us seeds of peace to sow on earth, who teaches us the love expressed in deeds,I am grateful for our pastand hopeful in our future.
When I remember the generosity of God—the blessings of life and family and friends, the health of mind and body and soul, the love others first poured into me,the gifts of time and talent and treasure, and the chance to say ‘Thank You’ in kind,I am grateful for our pastand hopeful in our future.
—Michael E. Moynahan, S.J.
prayer of gratitude and hope
Did you ever imagine, before you became parents or grandparents, that you would do some of the things you are doing as parents or grandparents? On September 8th, I celebrated fifty-four years as a Jesuit. If someone had told me what I would be doing during those fifty-four years, I would have told them they were nuts! There are some things we just never imagine we will be doing.
I never imagined doing graduate studies. I thought I would be teaching in a High School most of my Jesuit life. I never thought I would work in a Novitiate with young men aspiring to become Jesuits. I thought the Jesuits could find better and more reliable role models. I never thought I would write three collections of prayer-poems or produce four collections of biblical dramas. I never imagined people would read them or use them. I never imagined myself teaching at a university in Berkeley, Santa Clara or Spokane. I never imagined directing study abroad programs in either England (Durham) or Italy (Florence), but I did. I never imagined being asked to become pastor of this parish or being involved in a Capital Campaign to build a new School and Parish Offices. I never imagined doing any of these things but those are some of the surprises and invitations I experienced as I lived out my call as a Jesuit.
So why did I do all of these things? Why did I give myself, I hope, generously, to them? Why did you do all of those things as parents or grandparents? Why have you given yourselves generously to them? I think the answer to all these questions comes from the title of a chapter in a book entitled The Busy Volunteer’s Guide to Fundraising. The title of the chapter is this: “Values, not wealth, determine a person’s willingness to give.” We each did all of these unimagined works ultimately because of our values. Let me mention three of those values.
The first value is mercy or compassion. Pope Francis declared this year a Jubilee Year of Mercy. If we are truly aware that everything in life is a gift—and our belly buttons remind us of this daily—then our hearts will be filled with gratitude. If we have been the constant beneficiaries of the mercy and compassion of others—parents, grandparents, teachers, ministers, friends—then those gifts of mercy and compassion have systematically nurtured our abilty to be merciful and compassionate. At St. Ignatius School, we strive to educate the mind, the heart and the hands of your children/grandchildren. Knowledge, compassion, and service are what those minds, hearts, and hands produce.
The second value is imperfection. As Canadian poet and songwriter Leonard Cohen says, in his song Anthem, “There’s a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.” We teach your children/grandchildren that we are all “works in progress.” We teach your children/grandchildren that we are imperfect and incomplete but that leaves room for God’s grace to work within us, our lives and our world. As St. Paul proclaims, in his letter to the Ephesians, “Glory be to him, whose power working in us can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine” (Eph. 3:20).
The third value is great desire. St. Ignatius believed that God gives every human being two gifts. The first gift is our good desires. And when those good desires have become great desires, God grants the gift of what we desire in faith. This is one of the expressions of the Magis. St. Ignatius wanted his companions to “Go, set the world on fire!” Firefighters need not worry. This was the fire of mercy, of compassion, of love and of service.
In the pages of this Annual Report, you will find the result of our common held values. Together, we are not only stronger, we are more merciful and compassionate. The pictures and numbers tell the story of love in action. They help us joyfully proclaim, “We are Grateful for Our Past and Hopeful in Our Future.”
Fr. Mike Moynahan, S.J.Pastor, St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish
Thank you! I really cannot say it enough, because it is due in great part to your spirit of generosity that we are able to advance the mission of St. Ignatius Parish School, to develop young men and women of faith, action, integrity, thought and health. And this Annual Report is our opportunity to show our gratitude for your contributions—your time, your talent and your treasure. The following pages cannot encapsulate all that you’ve allowed us to do, but we do hope to give you a glimpse of what your support delivers to our students.
Like so many, at the advent of a new year we set new goals. Among ours for the 2015-2016 School Year was improving our Jesuit Identity. The tenets of Jesuit faith are already prominent on our campus, but we wanted to build a closeness so that living the Magis becomes second nature for our community and living life for the Greater Glory of God is part of every action that we take.
So, with the help of Father Moynahan, our Jesuit Priests, Campus Minister Tony Cortese, and our teachers, we set about making each of those tenets—Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, Finding God in All Things, Cura Personalis, Men and Women for Others and Discernment—a focus in our academic calendar for a period of weeks.
In addition to the influence in our classrooms, we witnessed these tenets flourishing throughout our community. Hundreds of parents volunteered thousands of hours to benefit our students and our school, acting as the very best examples of men and women for others. The Jesuits visited with students frequently in the classrooms and worked closely with them in putting together our monthly family masses—building an ever-stronger connection between our school and parish communities, and our collective relationship with God.
Our 8th Graders completed our school’s first Arrupe Project—a year-long, capstone study in which all participants—students, teachers and the organizations they served benefited immeasurably and confirmed that at St. Ignatius our students are learning the service of justice as well as charity.
This Annual Report leaves us with a footprint of where we have been and a vision for where we are headed as we remain ever Grateful for our Past and Hopeful in our Future. Thank you, once again, for all that you do to support the community of St. Ignatius Parish School. God bless you.

athleticsExercise and athletics are central to a healthy lifestyle and the St. Ignatius experience. Every student from TK through 8th grade participates in P.E. and many of our Tigers are on athletic teams with the rest of the community cheering them on to impressive achievements:
• SI’s flag football teams gave a great showing with the Girls’ team claiming the PAL Championship and the Boys’ team taking the runner-up slot.
• Our Girls Competitive Volleyball Team clinched the PAL Volleyball Championship for an unprecedented third time in a row.
• For the first time in many years an SI Boys’ Competitive Volleyball Team took to the court.
• We shined our lights at numerous tournaments. The JV Girls Competitive Basketball team took 2nd place at the Presentation Tournament. And our Varsity Green and Gold Basketball teams faced off for the title at the St. LaSalle Classic Basketball Tournament. What tremendous sportsmanship!
• There was more Tiger pride at the PAL Golf Championship, where the team finished 2nd—the best finish since since golf became a sport at SI.
St. Ignatius is proud to field teams for boys and girls in 5th through 8th grades in flag football, volleyball, cross country, basketball, golf and track. And thanks to PAL Little Dribblers basketball, our 1st through 4th graders are also able to join in the fun!

acaDemic DecathlonOur perennial rock stars—the Academic Decathlon team and their truly devoted coaches—nurtured their minds and souls to triumph once again at the Diocese-level competition, setting a new record with this ninth consecutive win. The team of 7th and 8th graders went on to claim 3rd place at the statewide championship. No other school in the 27-year history of the event has achieved this unprecedented success.
There are ten events at the Academic Junior High Decathlon. Two are collaborative team efforts—a logic quiz with 20 rigorous thinking problems, and a super quiz. The remaining eight events test individual knowledge in a variety of subjects.Twenty-two schools took part in the diocesan event, which culminated in the exciting 50-question “Super Quiz,” where students test their knowledge in five subject areas: science, social studies, literature, fine art and religion.
8 ST. IGNATIuS PARISH SCHOOL
This year, we were thrilled to launch a year-long service project that will serve as the capstone to our 8th Graders’ education at St. Ignatius. under the nurturing guidance of Angela Olsen (8th Grade Teacher), Principal Patty Kochis, and Campus Minister, Tony Cortese, students took on the Arrupe Project. Named for Father Pedro Arrupe, S.J., former Superior General of the Jesuits, the project seeks to empower the students to become men and women for others through faith, service, and justice.
As a school our focus is naturally on the academics. “We always want our students to be the best they can be academically,” said Principal, Patty Kochis. “For some that is a 4.0, for others that might be a 2.3, and if that is their best, we are okay with that. But ultimately academics are not as important as the kind of students we graduate. Their character, compassion, service, empathy, understanding, and care for others are extremely important. We want every single student to realize that they can make a difference for the good in this world.”
For the Arrupe Project each student researched organizations that are committed to helping those in need and ending social injustice. After considerable reflection and conversation, the students each completed a four-page proposal in which they identified one
group that really spoke to them, detailed how they reached out to that organization to offer assistance, and outlined a fundraising plan that would allow the student to purchase and deliver items that the organization needed.
“We gave them a lot of time to prepare their proposals, because we really wanted them to dig deep, to take on this project as a mission and opportunity to help out a cause that is dear to their hearts. Tony (Cortese) and I knew that a positive attitude towards the work that they put in would ensure success and make this experience monumental and life altering,” Mrs. Olsen said.
“The goal of this project is never to force the students into acts of service and justice just so they can check off a box. ultimately, we hope the students participate in the Arrupe Project because they have a love burning in their hearts and they can’t help but do something about it,” Mr. Cortese added.
The students presented their plans to a panel that included Mrs. Olsen, Ms. Kochis and Mr. Cortese. Each student had to work to fundraise seed capital of $10, and upon approval of their plans the school matched those funds, giving each student a $20 startup budget. That money was then used by the students to kick off their
fundraising efforts, which ranged from selling hot chocolate and donuts on chilly mornings to selling handcrafted wooden crosses at the Arrupe Market held at school. With the help of Technology Instructor, Bob Christensen, the students designed and maintained budget documents to account for all of their fundraising expenses and income.
“It was quite impressive watching my son formulate and then implement a business plan of sorts. He did the entire project himself so he had complete ownership over it and I’ve never seen him prouder than when he was able to present the funds he raised to the River City Food Bank,” said Becky DelPiero, mother of Giovanni DelPiero. “It was a priceless service experience.”
Students did not receive a grade for this project and they were advised that it should never be considered a competition, but Mrs. Olsen noted that those guidelines were almost unnecessary as the students came into 8th grade prepared for this endeavor. “With support and encouragement from each other, these kids stepped outside of their comfort zones and really reflected on injustice. They learned so much about how they can make a difference,” she said. “This is truly what their entire journey at St. Ignatius has prepared them for.”
“The Arrupe Project was a great deal of work, however it exposed a lot of hidden talents within our 8th grade class,” added Giovanni DelPiero.
ultimately, the Class of 2016 took on 30 organizations, raised over $9,000, and delivered books, backpacks, school supplies, toiletries, canned foods, cooking supplies ,and many other items to the organizations they had at the forefront of their minds and deep in their hearts throughout the year.

Fr. Pedro arrupe, s.J. (1907-1991) was the 28th general superior of the Jesuit order during the tumultuous period following vatican ii. he continually prodded Jesuits and non-Jesuits alike to live their lives for others. Fr. arrupe was a man of great spiritual depth who was committed to justice.

uniting the heart anD minDIgnatian spirituality was brought to each of our classroom with the help of our Campus Minister, Tony Cortese. He guided the students as they planned their class Masses, lead prayer services and helped even our youngest students understand that God is in All Things. A beautiful tradition that Tony led this year was the Burning of the Palm. Students took part in a ceremony marking the beginning of Lent with a rite that produced the ashes that were put on the forehead of the faithful during Ash Wednesday. The ashes were produced by burning the palms which were blessed during the previous year’s celebration of Palm Sunday. The ceremony began with an opening prayer asking “God of tender mercy…to look on us with kindness as we prepare the ashes, which will mark the beginning of our Lenten journey…”
We are so blessed at St. Ignatius. We have fantastic teachers, engaged administrators, devoted priests, and of course our treasured students. But there is one part of our community that may be overlooked when the accolades are being sung—our remarkably generous parents! They model for our children exactly what it means to be Men and Women for Others.
In the 2015-2016 school year, our parents contributed thousands of volunteer hours, and there is no doubt that hundreds more hours were provided without being officially reported. From selling Scrip in the parking lot to coordinating major events like Amazing Grapes or the gala; from volunteering at a class party to hanging shelves in a classroom, these parents, at school every day, help create the true feeling of family that makes SI so special.
But we don’t just feel good about parent volunteerism. Our volunteers create tangible benefits for our children. It’s due in large part to the hard work of our school parents that St. Ignatius is able to offer programs like technology, art, Spanish and our lower- and upper-grade science classes as well as many other critical academic resources.
Education experts who have studied the effect parent involvement has on their children’s development, find that children grow more and their schools achieve more when parents are directly involved as volunteers. Proof of this is clear every day at St. Ignatius.
“The spirit of volunteerism at St. Ignatius Parish School is infectious,” says Darrell Parsons, father of Ella (2nd grade) and Kendall (Transitional Kindergarten). “All of us feed off each other’s exuberance for our children’s success and, by extension, St. Ignatius’ overall success. Basically, everybody here gets it, from the staff and clergy to the parents. We’re all putting our utmost effort into making St. Ignatius the most amazing spiritual and academic spiritual institution it can be. And the proof of that effort is evident on campus every single day.”
go Forth anD set the worlD on FireThe mission of the school’s Magis ministry is to do “the more” for the greater good of society and the Greater Glory of God. This year, 37 students from 4th through 8th grades committed to seek God in others as they organized more than 17 Christian service events that enriched the lives of people across the Sacramento region and beyond. Magis students knitted scarves for the homeless, visited with the elderly at Mercy McMahon Terrace and enjoyed lively games of Bunco, and adopted two Kindergarten classes from Leataata Floyd Elementary School—reading to the children and hosting Valentine’s Day and Harvest Fall parties for them.
