N Y S Legislature has a bill in the Senate (S.3947) and in the Assembly (A. 2694) promoting Physician Assisted Suicide.
Our State Senator Peter Harckham has co-sponsored this bill. We will have a letter
addressed to Senator Harckham for parishioners to sign on the
January 4th / 5th weekend. We want him to know there are many reasons NOT to pass this bill and want him to consider the safety and well-being of his constituents. There will be tables set up for you to read and sign the letter. We will deliver them to his district office. Please pray for the
vulnerable and/or disabled. We do not know if the bill will be voted on in January but we want
our voices heard.
Catholic Guidance for End-of-Life Decision Making (Part 5) – Hospice Care:
A service promoting compassionate care for the dying by providing physical, spiritual and
emotional resources for terminally-ill patients and their families. Hospice services may be provided
in a home setting or in an institutional setting. The mission of hospice is to celebrate life in the
face of death by offering medical, emotional, and spiritual support to the dying patient and their
loved one. Hospice care includes palliative care. Palliative care: Focuses on providing patients with relief from pain, suffering, symptoms and
stress of serious illness. It is sometimes referred to as “comfort care” provided by a team of
professionals. “Right-to-die”: A social movement that, contrary
to Church teaching, promotes the right of an individual to take his/her own life or receive
assistance to end his/her life prematurely. The Church teaches that we are stewards, not owners, of the life God has entrusted to us; it is not ours to
dispose of. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2280). The leading “right-to-die” advocacy organization are now called “Compassion &
Choices” and “Death with Dignity”. Nine States and the District of Columbia have enacted laws
allowing “physician-assisted-suicide” (PAS) and euthanasia. Oregon has had such a law for 25
years. Oregon also has the highest suicide rate in the US at 33% of deaths are due to suicide.

Feast of the Holy Family
Feast of the Holy Family, Roman Catholic religious festival falling on the first Sunday after Christmas. Although major feast days dedicated to each member of the Holy
Family—Jesus, Mary, and Joseph—also exist, the Feast of the Holy Family commemorates their life together, and the celebration focuses on religious family life. Because of the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt, a feast for the Holy Family has been observed by the Copts from early times. In Western Christianity, however, a cult of veneration for the Holy Family as a group, rather than as individuals, did not
arise until the 17th century and was not officially recognized until the feast day was formally instituted in 1921 under
Pope Benedict XV. Originally celebrated on the Sunday after Epiphany (January
6), the Feast of the Holy Family was moved to the Sunday after Christmas in 1969, bringing it within the Christmas
season.
